SKT1 revealed they went through some changes in team on the 17th. Three players mentioned retired, and Doctor.K took on the position as the Protoss playing coach for the team.
SKT1 has a coach for every race, and since Doctor.K is respected by the players for they team, they decided to make him a playing coach.

Yeah, the thread name scared the living holy bejesus out of me Though in retrospect if a big big name had retired nobody would have started a thread with a title like this
How does Doctor.K become protoss coach? He freaking sucks. The only thing is he's been around a long time, but I'm sure Bisu would make a better coach, right?

Coaches are supposed to suck. They're usually the oldest on the team. Bisu would make a better coach, but he would have less practice time. Coaches don't need practice time because they're usually not that good. Iris is the exception. And I think so is whoever the coach of STX is. Nvm, it's soo now, not hwasin.

Why make Bisu a player coach? I'm sure that would mean less practice time for him. Teams usually dont like to do that to their main players.
edit: oh, avidkeystamper kind of said that already.

The only problem is... who the fuck is Doctor.K? I'm pretty sure someone like oov or boxer would make a better P coach even though they don't play toss; a great thinker is a great thinker and a poor player will breed poor players.
wasn't doctor.k part of the old 2v2 team? i guess if the players respect him he must be pretty smart, might just not have the skill to back up the knowledge
I LOVED Anomia. I saw no reason for MuJuK to retire and RainBOw is more concerned with looking attractive than anything else, so he can go fuck himself.

hmmm what wtf a bad player doesnt mean he will be a bad coach look at mumyung his coaching did help skt zergs a lot
also im pretty sure doctor.k was skt captain for quite a while?
there's more to being a playing coach than just being good at starcraft. coaches need to have a solid personality that others can look up to and must command respect within the team so that others will listen. i know i would much rather listen to a player who isn't super skilled, but charismatic and and compelling, instead of a kid who may be good at the game, but doesn't know shit about leading others. at midas' prime, i'm sure most of the skt1 team had a losing record against him; doesn't mean midas would have made a good playing coach.
Rainbow.. you were before my time; I never knew you though now that you're gone I wish I had gotten to know you better. AnomiA, you...... wait, did you ever do anything?

Don't think doctor.k was ever captain... could be wrong (somehow) Is mumyung really the coach? And anyway, being the coach of SKT zerg is like being the coach of USA soccer... your team probably wont win and if it does, 99% chance it's a fluke.

Is it possible for Korean progamers to NOT respect their elders? Really weird that a player coach is based on seniority over anything else. And this seems to be the case for other teams too. You never hear of a young progamer who doesn't really cut it as a player due to APM or bad mechanics something. And turn coach because he has awesome strategic and tactical insights.

Doctor.K (aka Bul_T) wasn't actually that bad a player. He was on T1's 2v2 team in the 08 SPL season, which wasn't a bad 2v2 team. 6-2 on Hannibal, 2-2 on Hunters. He also tended to do well in his two appearances in the MST recently, only to get wrecked in Ro32 of the MSL. Really, any player who can make the T1 A-Squad isn't a bad choice as a coach. It's not like eSTRO where they have extra slots on the A-Squad kicking around.

This is probably a really intelligent reply to my post that I'm too drunk to respond to. I still think oov would serve as a more than adequate P coach (at least for pvt which i guess is the least important of the matchups with today's z dominance)

If you didn't listen to Midas he'd give you an uppercut. New KTF coach here folks.
A lot of the behind the scene SKT1 vids will show how sociable Doctor.K is. He's basically the guy that gets the group together and bring out their team spirit. I just find it ironic because he's possibly the nerdiest looking progamer out there.
what the fuck, I blame fucking ACE and not taking Rainbow last season, what the fuck really , fucking ClouD? Have you even watched the game on Jim Raynors Memory ? Jeez... I wanted to watch Rainbow again so badly...
lol omg well.. good bye rainwbow one of the aweosme old tosses.. with sick reaver micro and ..well mostly shuttle drops micro haha. damn what is he gona do?!?!
and anomia.. well that sucks. his replays rocked lol.
mujuk wtf already? i only started seeing u like last year or something.
and doctor.K.. wtf u too? well ok go be a coach haha.
Also, Dametri, don't bash Doctor.K. He may not be that good, but he's been the team captain for such a long time, and he has a lot of respect in the SKT house. Realize that being the coach is not just about supporting your best players like Bisu and Best, but also about helping to teach and train the lower-down members, like the ones that are coming up from the B-team to fill these open spots in the roster.
To use a different example, you don't need to have been an Olympic medalist to be able to coach a country's team well. Sometimes, having the medals under your belt might be intimidating to someone fresh on the roster who's not that good. And saying that Oov would be a better coach than Doctor.K for protoss? That's like saying that Michael Phelps could coach an olympic diving team. Just because Oov knows the matchup doesn't mean he knows how to TEACH the matchup from the protoss side.

More like Garry Kasparov coaching on an opening he doesn't play. Your point's taken though.

Mujuk... I only remember him for being there and one game vs Shine on Monty Hall where he gets a big macro lead and blows it by being stubborn. Anomia - similar case. Both of them were support for their team, like most of progamers who just sit there being decent/good practice partners but never achieve anything. Rainbow's case is different as he was core player for years and is senior to everyone except boxer and oov. Eh, its sad to see him go, how sweet would it be if he got one more pogamer prime time in his life. Especially using reavers and harass/technical style... Guess it wont happen, time to find some new promising players or turn to other vets we didn't like as much before.
