I was wondering today if I will change my multiplayer race when HOTS comes out. It's a new game so it will be a new opportunity to start with another race and now that the game is developed, we know better the play style of each race.
So there the poll! Thank You! Discuss in this thread about your decision!
For me, I am considering switching from Protoss to Zerg because i want to learn my macro better and i don't really like the warp mechanic for macroing...!

I'll continue as Random, just because an unstable metagame is all that more fun to try out builds in. Random gets the best openings out of all four choices, just because when HOTS opens, no-one will have any clue as to what is still good, and Random just profits off of that.
First time I've ever sincerely thought of dropping protoss since I was little playing starcraft before broodwar... I have faith in blizzard that they will make it all work out. It just seems to me that the protoss are losing such cool units (despite not being used often) and gaining such lackluster ones. Zerg was pretty interesting to me in the first place and their new units seem pretty sweet. Terran I can't ever play because they hurt my feelings too bad at the start of wings of liberty =)
Flying buildings, transforming mechs. Big cannons, and flamethrowers. Now they showed me a shredder and promist "Big F-ing Mech" come on. Terran FTW! (I will be probably denoted after all T nerfs, I'm in too hight league for my skill anyway ;-) )
I'm willing to try to stick with Protoss a bit more, but I definitely regret it, I should have picked Terran from the beginning. Maybe it would be time to switch for HotS, as Terran gets more cool stuff as usual while Protoss gets to copy Terran's new stuff and block mineral patches.
Protoss going to terran, I was really put off by bio TvP and how map specific mech TvZ was with the new units it looks like mech will be much more viable if it turns out to be true I'll most certainly switch to terran.
Was actually thinking about it. Not due to balance reasons (I'm too shit for that to matter) but because I'm not too happy about the new Protoss units. SotG convinced me of the Oracle's worth (<3 Artosis), but the other I am still not convinced. Zerg and Terran are both getting AWESOME new stuff as far as I'm concerned. Right now they both seem to be getting great tools for map control, which even if I can't utilise well, is very cool. We'll see, but for now I think I'm gonna switch. HotS has got me very excited.
I play Terran right now, and I play Zerg in BW. I am a big fan of lurker play, so if the swarm host lives up to my hopes in its usefullness, Ill probably switch back to Z.
Though, warhound is going to make TvP pretty awesome. No more bio for me, heheh.
I'm thinking I may switch to terran from zerg for HotS, based on what I saw, terran looks like they'll be able to mech fairly well with different types of mech in HotS, I love mech in WoL, but just tanks and hellions gets kinda bleh.

It's not only the new units to take into consideration. It's a game and changing race changes the way you play completly. I know i won't ever be a Pro so for me changing race after 1000 games is a way to refresh the game too in a way. And if i don't like it after 100 games i can always go back to P!
I will stay protoss, and I wont even make any of the new units unless they change the old ones. The new protoss units seem slow to get, very expensive, and (for now) look like they are only useful in a long macro game. I, however, never play a long macro game as protoss, and I will stick to my 1 and 2 gateway timings and all ins that I have relatively good success with.
That said, anyone trying to tech to the new units too quickly, or playing greedy and assume that I want to make the new units, prepare to die to a 4 gate or 7 gate blink all in. GG.
Some may say it is too early to have any opinions on how this will effect casual and professional play, but I am going to say that I do not like this expansion whatsoever at the moment for either aspect from a protoss point of view.
I actually dont see a reason to REMOVE units that were not used by "competitive" players. I am a casual player. The highest league ive ever been was low masters. When I log on to my other account in Silver league, I want to do a 2 or 3 base mass carrier attack, and now I cant. I dont want to copy terran or zerg units. There is a reason I dont play those 2 races is because I dont like them. I'll just say that there is no harm in keeping the mnothership and the carrier in the game for the people that want to use them. Obv they arent worried about them being OP.
I will stay as Terran, I'm a lazy f**k to learn anything other than Terran, also HOTS might provide Terran with decent mech play vs Protoss so, yeah...
Can't really decide ^^. Right now I prefer Zerg but my favorite race is still Terran, i just don't enjoy TvP, but in HOTS that will probably change if i can go mech :D.
Gonna have to try it out, I'll probably play random for while before i choose. Pretty sure I'm not gonna play Protoss anyway.. Don't really like them now, and i suck at PvP. Besides, their new units seem kinda lame compared to the awesome new Z/T units.
If Protoss however turn out to be fun in HOTS I'll play Random

And the option i would choose ! Switching from terran to Mech ^.^
I dont think your map vetoes have any effect on what matchups you get. I believe it finds a player then choses the map based on both players vetoes.
OT: I'm a protoss player and I'll either be sticking with protoss for HoTS or switching to random.
if terran gets nothing ( like all the cool units removed because of whines) im switching races, i have nothing to look forward to with terran, same old thor in a new skin , a hellion transformation? okay i guess, and a shredder that is removed and every game that i win is blamed on balance issues..
Staying terran but zerg going to be unbeatable with blinding cloud+fungal growth plus LOL burrow-move banelings. Only way blinding cloud will be balance will be if they remove banelings and bring back lurkers...am I right?
Looks like the fair weather players are leaving in droves... Nice, more ZvZ for me to crush them in. Anyone who thinks marine splitting is hard hasn't played ZvZ Baneling wars.

No, you're wrong.
How can you complain about things that aren't even in public beta yet. By the time it hits public beta, the cloud might not silence. Cloud might reduce range by 3, instead of a flat 'set to 1' modifier.
There is so much stuff that could change or not go through.
I'm already switching from P (Which i have played exclusively since BW) to T for season 4, I really tried to make the Toss work but I give up, and after seeing the HOTS changes I'm glad I chose to switch when I did. I've been practicing Terran for a week against friends in customs and my W/L is almost what it was after a year of Protoss, I'm hitting the ladder soon I think. And I'm looking forward to getting cool new units in HOTS as my new race rather then gimmicky useless stuff as my old race.

How come there are so many more Z/P players reading and voting in the poll than T's?
TL didn't use to be so Z biased in bw, why did such a large portion go Zerg in HotS ? IdrA ? Fruitdealer? Nestea? Reasons unrelated to pros? Like to play the underdog race?
I think I'll stay T for HOTS. Mech will be finally viable again, as we wont have to rely on gimmicky siege tanks that stand no chance vs current tier 3.
Even though I'm slightly worried about the Replicator (I really hope it gets removed) I am sticking with Protoss for sure. I've been playing them since BW and will not be stopping now especially since Blizzard seems to know we are lacking.
Way too early to say for sure, seeing there's been very little opportunity to see how the new units will work out. Although, I'm not really thrilled about the proposed Protoss changes and Zerg is starting to look pretty sexy...
I normally play both Terran and Zerg, but now I'm solidifying myself to Terran only. The new aoe unit looks like it will make the game more enjoyable for me as a Terran and I like the direction mech is headed.
If everything were to stay as it has been introduced to us so far, I'm not sure which race I would pick (T or Z) but I would definitely be dropping P. The new units are a bandaid solution to a real problem with the race, and I can't see myself playing it if there aren't some real significant changes made to the set up.
At the moment, I'm leaning towards Z because the viper is a boss, and because I have a general dislike of terran Bio. If mech becomes MUCH more usable in HoTS, then I'll certainly consider it. Also, Blizz needs to do something about the snipe ability.
But... It's been tempting to switch over to Zerg for a good while now, just for the sake of fun... I feel like playing zerg greedily, but its more like the thought of playing Zerg which draws my attention more than actually playing it. Once I play it, it doesn't feel that fun... And Terran feels... dull... idk. I don't wanna give up on Terran though!
Sticking with Protoss as a main although I play random a lot nowadays, I don't think I would consider changing until I've tested out the new units first.
Played Protoss in SC1...never really gave BW a chance as I was caught up in EQ at the time. Played Protoss most of WoL - dabbled with random for a while and still do random in team games and have fun playing zerg, but need to work on my mechanics big time.
Based on new units, I'm seriously considering a switch to zerg with HoTS. I just don't see the late game flexibility for tech switches with protoss that are going to be there in HoTS with Terran and Zerg - and I just can't bring myself to play Terran.
Protoss in beta, Zerg in Retail and Zerg feels awesome to win with, yet Protoss has nice army feel and cool units I feel like... How ever since they showed the Viper and Swarm Host, I think I will stay Zerg
Too early to tell really. Regardless, Terran is too awesome thematically, so I'll probably stick with them. Especially if Shredders somehow make it to live.
I've been playing Zerg/Random since broodwar and I don't see myself changing that unless they make some drastic changes to the style and feel of zerg. Which I don't see happening.
If the units that are proposed go live, I'll definitely switch to Terran from Protoss. I have been contemplating the switch for awhile, but my TvT is really bad.
With the start of the new season I'm going to be tanking my rating (hopefully bringing it back up eventually) and playing random from now until they release HotS, probably play random through s1 of HoTS and maybe pick a race.
I'll probably try out both zerg and terran since those are the two races I play. Protoss playstyle has never interested me, and I don't see anything in the future that would change my mind. Even if there was a huge domination of protoss I just can't see myself playing that race.
Protoss switching to random; unfortunately it's not a poll option.
I'm sick of worrying about game balance and the metagame revolutions and nerfs/buffs that play havoc with anyone who wants to stick with a single race.
I will be disappointed though if the tempest truly does counter EVERYTHING in the air. Cus that means no more terran air =/ Maybe it won't counter the BC tho cus of yamato. Really I don't see why they don't just buff phoenixes, which already are anti light units. I feel the role is too similar... there's a fast light anti-air-light unit called Phoenix, then a capital ship that has AoE anti-light air too but also a strong ground attack?
I love the excitement for the new expansion, but to me it's all too soon to say anything. My first thought has always been to stick with my main race though (protoss).

The tempest will never counter vikings simply because of range and kiting.
If all current announced units will stay the I will continue to play zerg, but if they remove viper and do not add anything cool then I may switch to terran. Shredders ftw!
Too used to playing Terran to change in 1v1 ladder. Already switched to Random for (the rare) team games. Of course, if the mechanics change enough to make my current Terran familiarity irrelevant I'll switch to Random in 1v1 as well. It's a lot more fun, although rank/skill will suffer.
Staying Protoss, though I can't say I am too happy with the new units. My opinion might change after seeing some higher level players use them, but the Blizzard presentation didn't exactly wow me.
If I did switch it would be to Zerg. When I (rarely) offrace I play as Zerg, not Terran so that is where I have the second most experience. Plus their new units look awesome.
Too late for me to change now. I've sunk myself into a nice rut with Zerg. Also, the new units seem pretty decent.
I made some half-assed attempes to switch from Protoss to Zerg in bw, but once I get used to a race, theres a lot of inertia and I hate going through the long learning process where I'm playing way below my main race level.
I will withhold my judgement, i just hope the protoss will get some more needed units thoughout the beta stages. Otherwsie i might switch to terran to avoid PvP
I don't know. I'm Protoss since BW and WoL, but WoL I was rather underwhelmed with the ball of death and lack of multiprong harassment, but I was holding out for the expansions and old loyalty to Auir. HotS protoss units I find disappointing and I'm considering switching for the first time. However, I'll wait and see.
I think my dislike for collosi would be better served by trying to kill them rather than handicapping myself by never making them.
If things go as bad for Aiur as I think they might in HOTS, this Brotoss is heading out of the Koprulu sector. Time to lay down my psi-blades and to head into the Void.
Protoss stay Protoss, but will definetly play random for a couple of weeks from release just to see new abilities and well you know a lil bit of race switch
I suspect that this poll is more than anything related to "balance" among the 3 races, given this new expansion is suposed to "buff" or "focus" more on Zerg and Protoss than on Terrans, this might have some importance for thoses looking for wins or those newer players, but im one of those players that just happen to like the game, i like RTS, and even since BW i have played Terran as my main (oh god i sucked so much, still do but not anywhere near as before :D ), and even if they where the "underdogs" on SC2 (wich isn't the case) i would still play as Terran, not because they are the most complete race, not because they have the most killing unit composition, or whatever, i would still play them just because i like playing Terran.
I chose zerg because it was the weakest Since so many new units are in, the game is basically reset, so whichever is the underdog race, that will be mine!
I've been a Protoss for about 10 years, always liked their concept, lore and how thy play. I do enjoy some other matchups like BW TvX, BW ZvT and for now SC2 TvT and ZvT
I consider to switch to Protoss all the time, but I cannot since I seem to have zerg blood.
It's strange. In WC3 I mostly played Orc and offraced a bit with Undead. I never made a switch even though I considered Undead the funnier and even better race (despite that Orc>UD imba whining of many players.)
In SC1 I played zerg because I liked them in the campaign. Since them I think like a zerg and feel like a zerg.
Protoss probably switching to Random. I don't have time to commit to top level play, so I'll just mess around with all races in a slightly lower league. Plus then I may discover that I am actually better with another race as opposed to Protoss. (picked toss back when the game first came out because my macro sucked and warpgates helped me compensate for that)
I might go to Zerg, I've been offracing as Z quite a lot for the last few months and it has been fun. I'll probably not decide till nearer the time though.
I might switch to zerg from protoss. I really like the idea of constantly spreading creep and constantly injecting and making drones n such. Been thinking about switching for a while now, but I might wait until HoTS before I do it
I play Protoss, but if everything will be like today announced then I will most certainly switch to zerg. Zerg feels just better designed with hots than protoss
Terran: 24% are considering changing races Zerg: 8% are considering changing races Protoss: 19% are considering changing races
It's also interesting that the number of responses from a particular race seems to correlate to the percentage that are planning to stay as their own race. I wonder if this is a coincidence or if the races where more people are considering switching are also the ones with more people who are planning to "wait and see"? I guess that would make sense.
I'm currently zerg but I always feel like I want to play protoss. I may use HOTS to change since gameplay will be so different but I've been debating changing to toss just for season 4 to see how it goes (since seasons are so short).
My comp has died so i can't play at all and i that will be the case with HotS i guess so when i can buy a comp that can run sc2 i will buy it, but until than i don't see the way to buy HotS.
Played Toss in BW as a kid, which was my main reason for staying as Toss in SC2. (Although playing Random in Team League and non-ladder games) Not sure if I'll stay for HotS though. I don't wanna play Terran in 1v1, I'm not joining the dark side. Might switch to Zerg, I'll wait until the Beta to decide.
I will start as random I think. First of all, I will not rage over perceived imbalances, but rather enjoy them! Secondly, I will have extended knowledge of all three races when/if I choose one. Last but maybe most importantly, I'll be able to start every balance discussion with "I play random, and as I see it..." and nobody can call me biased or accuse me of racism. Hohoho!
On October 29 2011 00:24 InFi.asc wrote: each race should have it's own poll.
like this the percentages are meaningless
You need to condition on which race they play and then the poll is exactly what you want. For example, want to know % of Protoss staying Protoss? (Staying Protoss)/(Staying Protoss+Protoss to Zerg+Protoss to Terran)
nice poll! Let me compile the statistics for you. Feel free to add them to the OP.
WoL race ratio: Z: 41+-1.8% T: 27+-1.4% P: 32+-1.6%
Zergs: switching to Z: 92+-1.3% switching to T: 4.7+-0.9% switching to P: 3.2+-0.8%
Protoss: switching to Z: 11.8+-1.7% switching to T: 7.7+-1.4% switching to P: 80+-2.2%
Terran: switching to Z: 18.4+-2.3% switching to T: 76+-2.6% switching to P: 5.1+-1.2%
the errors are purely statistical. Of course there is HUGE bias from which people come to this thread, and how people tend to go for the most scandalous options in polls, so interpret with caution. TL is maybe not known for its cautious interpretations, so we will see how that goes.
I think the only really significant result is that people have a tendency to switch to zerg for HotS, which is maybe not that unexpected as it is the zerg expansion.
The percentages here are of course overestimated. For sure nowhere near 18% of the terrans will switch in reality (and NO, the fact that you (yes YOU wannabe statistician!) and all your terran friends will switch does not change that fact). It is from this impossible to say what the real percentage will be, as we have no control over how large the bias is. Blizzard will be able to tell us a few weeks into HotS.
edit: added bitter remarks about future misinterpretations.
would be a good moment to switch to terran, seeing how they are imba in WoL... However with PvX Canonrushes being completly broken and Protoss unable to ever getting outpositioned/caught out of positon due to massrecall in HotS... P>>>>>>>>>>{T,Z}
I'm gonna start laddering seriously as random once HotS is out, since I kinda started playing random late in WoL. At this point, I'm favoring Protoss and Zerg, but the new Terran units (dem shredder drops) might change that.
Poll thread. No one cares what anyone else posts, so it becomes fluffy. Theres way too many people on TL to have any sort of unified opinion. Some people will change, some wont but theres no real conclusions to be drawn.
