The subject of this thread is not a license to roll out your inaccurate, misinformed, poorly conceived, tired, and downright offensive theories about race relations. |
At worst,
using the words nigger and faggot imply that you are racist and homophobic. They're historically derogatory terms used to dehumanize Blacks and Homosexuals, and are often associated with acts of discrimination and violence.
At best,
using the words nigger and faggot indicates you have not respect and general insensitivity towards history and other social groups. Even when co-opting the words for 'humorous' or 'ironic' purposes, it reflects a misguided sense of entitlement and privilege, because no one that has been subject to real discrimination would use these words so cavalierly. Also, it's betrays a certain level of immaturity and hypocrisy, because these same people rarely have the audacity to use these words in the presence of Blacks and Homosexuals -- situations where there would be actual social consequences and retaliation.
TLDR? At worst, using the words nigger and faggot make Orb look like a racist. At best, it makes him look like a spoiled brat and a coward.
Neither of these perceptions are good.

Woah bro, you must venture onto the internet very often. yea. calling someone a "dumb nigger" is about as common a word as "Dude" on the internet...lol *uses a knife to decapitate a serbian soldier* BUT I SAW IT ON THE INTERNET LIKE A HUNDRED TIMES god i love when people play this game. just go to all of the extremes here because you know your argument is futile. also, THIS WAS ALSO ON THE INTERNET. maybe if beheading people happened everyday in the USA, then it would be pretty normal. but here is what is normal: calling someone on the internet a nigger. it happens every-single-day, probably every single minute. it's called not being a moron. i'm awaiting your eagre response. How do you think you discredited his point at all lol? Pretty much all you did was say "Not true" to what he said. Here's where you're wrong.. You think that just because it's used all the time it's okay. Well guess what, it's not. ESPECIALLY not for a community figure.

Wow, TL, Really? This is the big issue?
Fuckin pathetic.

First of all let me state the use use of F****** and N**** are hurtful words where its sole purpose was to demean and destroy a group of people. I don't give two fucks if you give me an argument about Oh well, are you Black? OH! This is just internet trash talk. Nah.. Nah.
Secondly! Orb, you are representing now a team that has amazing sponsors and an unbelievable organisation behind it. Your words now directly reflect EG and their sponsors. And shit! Don't keep somebody around who may turn off potential sponsors and brands due to one dickhead. I don't care if it is done on stream or only on ladder or only at LAN parties, if word gets around that you are a bigot or an internet trash talking bigot then MANY companies and brands would not touch that with a ten foot poll.
Lastly! I agree with the outcry because hell, look at the FGC. They had a serious asshole step up and completely paint a negative picture of their community whether they liked it or not. What did they do about it? Fuck all. They sounded and looked like apathetic, whiney and DUMB kids in my opinion. Don't let the SC2 community, EVER, be represented by somebody who does not represent us at all in the slightest.
Do I think that he should be shunned from professional casting? Meh, not my call. But do I think that anybody who wants to be put in the spotlight, yet conducts themselves in a way that hurts our community image should be allowed to continue representing us? Nope!
Thanks xD :D Please open a history book, or learn some latin. Please please before you go on making such stupid unfounded statements.

Exactly XD
A word that I often like to say is Twatbastard, when I say this I am not actually saying that this person was born of parents not married to each other and that they are reminiscent of female genitalia, I do agree that he should be punished by his organisation(EG I guess? XD) but I don't think that he should be burnt at the stake like other people do.

just be honest and show a little contrition ffs it's not hard
Well, shouldn't it be a big deal? Shouldn't we, as a community, stop accepting the use of words like nigger and faggot? The only reason people are able to get away with this kind of behavior is because we just accept it.

Yes, let's call it "unnecessary drama", cover our eyes and ears and pretend that this community doesn't need to adress this subject. That will probably fix it. TL, I am disappoint.
Im not defending his behaviour, I am denigrating the reaction people are having with their excessive treatment and calls for his loss of a job. I think he should be given the opportunity to fix his ways and not do this kind of thing moving forward.
Thats it.
We should be able to discuss the issue of racism hence why the thread is open but we shouldn't call for orb's head.

My god, nigger is used everywhere from rap songs to the local minimart. Take it easy. Orb fucked up for not apologizing straight away, but give the kid a break, he panicked and reacted badly.
Honestly, this community is so dramatic over every single thing. Jessica tweets something? omg 100 posts 20 page thread is needed. Do you guys have nothing better to discuss than attacking people relentlessly? What is destroying orb's reputation going to do for esports? Nothing at all.
Holy shit. What is the word nigger being normalized going to do for esports? It's not about nigger being normalized, that has nothing to do with anything, what are you talking about? The dude said derogatory stuff in ladder games, therefore his reputation should be destroyed? I don't understand that at all. IdrA BMs people, Destiny says much worse stuff, who are all of you perfect kids that have never said anything derogatory? He was not representing EG at the time of these insults via stream or anything. Ladder games. Yes, he should have apologized immediately, and maybe that will be the deciding factor in his punishment, but this reaction is so standard on TL now. Explode over the slightest bit of drama.
You literally just wrote this: "We're not normalizing it! We're just saying that it was a normal mistake that anyone could make! Lots of people say it all the time! Thats why he shouldn't get in trouble"

We should not accept this kind of language in our community. We shouldn't accept it anywhere. Doesn't matter what happens to this one dude in particular but it's important to speak up.
To everybody who thinks "it's just the internet nbd lolz:"
Grow the hell up.
Look at the locations of everyone pushing this line.
Social communism seems to be the way America rolls. That's cute for you, but you need to understand that your perspective is very much a national one that has arisen after decades of propaganda from cultural marxists. Calling someone a nigger is no different to calling someone a fag, just don't do it on the company's time. Which this isn't.

Not surprising since the only times I watch him stream, he just rages on the game, or the opposing player.

The etymological connection to niger is totally irrelevant.

I posted earlier in this thread, as someone who thinks it's perfectly reasonable and in fact is the responsible thing to do, that we should as a community tell Orb and others that using racist or homophobic language (whether you're actually racist or homophobic yourself or not) is completely unnacceptable behaviour.
I do think though, that calls for his job at this stage are a little extreme from those not directly representing or involved with EG. There is an arguement that he may not have realised the seriousness of the language given the context of the Internet as a whole and whilst I don't think that should excuse his behaviour, I do think it's sufficient to say "hey, don't do it again", so long as we are still sending the message of not tollerating that behaviour.
The lying is another thing for EG too ofc.

Not surprising at all, Orb always bm'ed everybody in bw, and still does in sc2. I'm happy people are realizing this now.
|
This is ridiculous and I hope that any team that supports him will remove him immediately and he will be permanently banned from competing in any professional tournaments.
|
I'm black personally and It doesn't offend me too much; but if this community is expected to grow , language like this has a high chance of offending other black people which is bad for growth.
|
I fail to realize what the problem is....He got mad, he raged. People do that all the time in every fucking business. Why does the sc2 community get so upset by things like this? If a football player punched another one in the fucking face on a televised game they are banned from a few matches and are required to give a public apology. This was a CASTER with a small fan base raging on a random ladder game.....Problem might be that he lied about it, but that's STILL not even closely enough to fucking fire him. Sure punish him somehow, I don't know how, but don't fire the poor guy

Remember what happened to Kramer when he said the N-word?
What do you think would happen to Anderson Cooper if he dropped the n-bomb on his personal twitter, denied it, did it a few more times and then apologized? I doubt he'd still be at CNN for much longer.
Saying it's his 'personal stream' is no excuse when he is recognized as the mouth of a major company. It shows a complete lack of regard or recognition of his position. He should know what he represents, even in his 'off-time', and make better choices. There's a million and a half ways to rage at someone that aren't racist.
And just LOL to anyone who says "It's the internet get over it." I really can't wait for these types of arguments to go away.

You don't know what a "Marxist" is. Nor do you know what "social communism" is (I don't either for that matter).
I am, in fact, a Marxist; not that you understand what that is and not that it has anything at all to do with this topic.
