SRS kinda like PETA, just different topic.

They're a reddit community.
They were responsible for contacting Stephano's sponsors when that screencap from Bling's stream went viral.
They also went after Destiny when the "dick post incident" blew up.
They like to contact sponsors directly en masse for maximum effect. They are somewhat of a "real life" downvote brigade.
|
So let me get this straight.
You are worried because some group at Reddit called "Shit Reddit Says" is causing damage to "our" community?
Seriously. Stop creating drama for no reason. Nothing is getting hurt, GSL is still up and running, Mvp is still stomping nerds, bnet is working fine and HoTS beta is under way.
|
Wow, that thread is full of idiots.

Personally I feel this is more of a character issue than a threat to Starcraft. Destiny's actions and antics don't really reflect on the overall community imo. Every sport has controversial icons, being that Starcraft is a video game which anyone can get into there are just a few more of them than the norm.
I'd say you have to look (or be involved in the community) to find the drama in this scene. There are far more professional, well composed, and skilled players, than there are conversations about pedophilia or racism.
|
I don't get it. What significance does this sub-reddit hold?! Why does this matter?
Destiny was making a very fine distinction. Frankly, though, it doesn't matter as far as EG is concerned.
|
This is really just the next attack in what will become a long string of incidents.
It's still worth noting though. These people are loose cannons.
|
Lets be real, this is not an issue and the topic creator is making something out of nothing
|
If the sc2 scene didnt have people like destiny, I and many others probably would not be involved in it. Have you folks forgotten this is the god damn internet? You wouldnt even get this offended over something in real life. Quit the QQ.

How are they even allowed to still cause that much trouble?

Well it's more they are the reason Stephano even got suspended since they made a thread to get everyone to complain to the EG sponsors lol.

Reddit is a little schizophrenic right now with the VA thing and I guess SRS feels empowered/has attracted even more morons because of it. I doubt Destiny'll lose any sleep over these dweebos though. The other way around.. I hope they do.
His points were actually good however, probably not allow this to draw attention away from that.

You don't know anything about SRS, apparently. They will do whatever they can to ruin the life of anyone who does something they disagree with. A sponsor isn't going to care who sent them an email, they are going to care about the fact that they got the email in the first place. If SRS email bombs sponsors shitting on players, casters or anyone else, it can have real, negative consequences.
What I don't get is why reddit still allow SRS to operate there. SRS is essentially a hate group under the guise of being a legitimate feminist group. They are basically responsible for every incident where reddit has come under negative publicity, warranted or (most often) not. I understand the whole "freedom of the internet" thing, but morally speaking, SRS is worse than the people who's lives they ruin. They should be removed from reddit. They are quite literally the biggest bunch of trolls and shitbags on reddit in my opinion.
|
they don't do anything good, it's just hate mongering under the guise of political correctness, which is basically condoned discrimination. someone should make r/shitshitredditsays and go after every single member. they are some of the worst people on the internet.

There is a whole family of associated "meta" subreddits related to SRS. Just check the sidebar on SRS if you are interested.

No one tried to justify statutory rape. If you think someone did, you have inferring more from the quote than is actually there. Destiny made a reference to it not being pedophilia, which given your response you'd agree with.
Also, the internet should recognize that not every countries has the same laws regarding sex with minors.

According to the image, it looks like France, age of consent if 15, but looks like neighboring countries has a younger age (guessing Germany is 14 and Spain is 13)...

Yes, because law is the basis for all morality. A 14 year old is not an adult, and if you are trying to find a way to make having sex with a 14 year old as a an adult any less creepy and wrong, I really want nothing to do with you.
|
And Destiny was trying to mount a legitimate defense, but the downvote brigade swept in and censored it. Not saying I agree with his point, of course, but we should be able to discuss the issue in a mature way without degrading into a poltically motivated poop flinging fest.
|
I don't get why people use reddit to do anything other than troll and post horrible pictures, it seems to all intensive purposes to be just a horrible place filled with trolls and children, why do pro players even bother having accounts there??
|
This is so dumb. The Stephano incident was utterly retarded. This is just as stupid.
The SC community was bad enough with the moronic witch hunts when they were internal. Now we have assholes who know nothing about this community watch dogging our players for no reason other than so they can feel good about themselves as they fall asleep?
This is terrible. This game is played by young nerdy dudes with a competitive thirst. They're going to say stupid things and do stupid things. We can tell them to mature without contacting fucking sponsors and harassing people.
Actually, why the fuck are they going after Destiny? They're either really bored or are planning a crusade.
|
Wow - some people need to get a life. It seems like they feel inadequate about their own lives and they try to create a false sense of success by ruining others'. I'm not condoning any of the actions taken by SRS or their victims - but seriously. This whole he said/she said thing needs to stay in middle school.
|
Wait, so these people actually think stephano is a legit pedophile?
they have to be the stupidist retards of all time...
stephano was clearly joking, whether it was a funny or poor joke is irrelevant, he still wasnt being serious. look at all these meme's they're spending their time making.
If these are the same people who like to contact sponsors and create drama to get players in trouble then they are cancer
|
Seriously guys, just quit this bullshit. Why make such a fuss about what people say, my god are you all a bunch of children? This reminds me of high school Why are people trying to make look people bad? Props for Destiny, at least he says what he wants and thinks and doesn't give a shit about those pety little twats who are trying to stirr up trouble.
|
What is Reddit and why do people care what goes on there? Like really...
|
I agree this group is a problem, and will be a player again in SC2. What we need is sponsors that understand the scene is full of people under the guise of anonymity, and will act accordingly. But that seems like a pretty tough task.
|
On October 16 2012 15:32 Apack wrote: I don't get why you don't get angry at a guy in the community trying to justify statutory rape, but instead get angry at people pointing out that its kinda fucked up.
statutory rape noun U.S. Law . sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of consent, which age varies in different states.
fun fact: this age limit varies not only in US states, but in country to country too. for example, in sweden it is 15yo. odds are pretty good that when destiny said "14 year old" he meant "person just about old enough to be of consentual age" and fun fact: if both you and your partner is of consentual age, then it cannot possibly be statutory rape. it can be normal rape, but that would require 1 person to disagree with the act, which we assume is not the case since nothing of the sort was mentioned.
so in short, noone is trying to justify statutory rape. get your facts straight.
whether intercourse with someone barely of consentual age is pedophilia however... well, its not.
from wikipedia: Pedophilia This article is about the sexual interest in prepubescent children. For the sexual act, see Child sexual abuse. For the primary sexual interest in 11–14 year old pubescents, see Hebephilia. For mid-to-late adolescents (15–19), see Ephebophilia.
I would say 14 years old is a long way away from prepubescent.
quick note: no I am not sexually attracted to people younger than legal age. I am 20.

Morality is an individual pursuit. Your morals are different than mine.
My point was that you saying statutory rape, which is based on law, not morals, has different criteria depending on country.

The vast ignorance and antipathy that so many TL members showcase regarding Reddit is much more annoying than any drama SRS or other trolls could cause.

Can someone please take the time to explain the situation so that people who don't understand the whole situation (like me) can form an unbiased opinion? All I'm seeing here is "Fuck you SRS, fuck this shit, fuck off."
|
There's a lot of people posting saying that this is just hatemongering, but the bigger picture is that SRS is the embodiment of what we all hate about the reddit and screddit community. They are witch-hunters in the purest form, and they represent a huge negative influence on the community.
|
If these SRS people continue to exist, our players will have a difficult time earning a living of streaming if they are not careful enough to run the risk of saying something controversial. This is hard to avoid for some people, especially destiny who stands up hard for his opinions. Other people are not so different. It is not uncommon for us to say/do something questionable.
The least we can do as a SC2 Community is to find a way so these SRS people will shut up. 1. Contact the SRS people themselves and tell them to give players/streamers a break and not make a big deal of anything by emailing the sponsors. We ask them to stop and tell them anyone can make a mistake. There is no point in trying to ruin someone's career.
2. If they do not agree and continue to prey on our players, we should take a more stronger action by using our mob power to get back at them. We find IT experts among us to trace their IP addresses, emails, personal and we harass them. Basically internet vigilante justice. This will might them stop. This sounds very extreme, but its still an option.

This thread is pointless, along with the arguments going on in it.
Though, I'd like to help you clarify something as a random helper Mr. Apack! Law cannot be the basis for morality as that does not logically work, at least not in a progressive society. This is because there would be no standards objectively set outside of the "law" - pretty comparable to the arbitrariness problem. If there are no standards, there is no obligation to society's standards. Therefore, ethics have to be the standards for law. Not the other way around as it wouldn't make any factual/morally objective sense; in short, law wouldn't mean anything if there was no ethics that it came from.
That's the sprinkling of philosophy I'll leave, and with that said I'll vanish off into the night. Philosophy man to the rescue. Saving illogical statements from the scary depths of subjectivity.
Seriously though, close this thread T_T;; Nothing good is going to come from this.. It's depressing these are popping up more and more D:
|
I was reading through the threads and it was really, really funny. In a sad way. In a sad, people who literally can't imagine how other people can see things differently than them way. But I chuckled.

If it's not reddit it will be something else, you just have to accept if you act like Destiny you'll get people hating against you on the internet, it doesn't matter if it's right or wrong.
If you think they influence sponsors negatively against esports, then do something yourself to let sponsors know you support them instead. Hating on *insert group of your choice* won't get you anywhere.
|
The internet is full of so many anonymous creeps. It's mildly terrifying to see unmasked human nature. A disgusting lot.
|
Really, they're not going to go away just by talking about them and complaining and yelling and being angry.
To be perfectly honest - we do need to police ourselves better. Stephano SHOULD be responsible for making sure that stuff doesn't appear on his stream, Destiny SHOULDN'T be using that kind of language while he represents sponsors, and we as a community SHOULD be a lot more open and respectful and use better language. That is, if we continue to wave the "ESPORTS" flag and demand to be seen as professionals. It shouldn't take a bunch of self-righteous asshats dishing out unfair vigilante justice to see that.
That said, yes. They are a bunch of self-righteous asshats getting off at the idea of ruining stuff for us because they don't like some cherrypicked quotes they find.

I honestly don't get the outrage. You say something stupid on the internet and get called for it? How horrible.
They don't go after people like Demuslim, Thorzain or other players who act decently on streams and at events. They go after the douchebags who make jokes about having sex with 14 year olds and showing their dicks on twitter. I don't think asking teams to discipline players who's actions are detrimental to the overall health of the scene is too much, do you? This isn't high school folks, these guys get paid a lot of money to act like professionals.

We really can't do anything to stop SRS. Trolls will be trolls. We just have to show that starcraft and esports are stronger than whatever shit they can do. So instead of whining, maybe email sponsors and tell them that a buncha enraged people that arn't even their customers are trying to bring us all down and just ignore them.

Could someone explain what is wrong with Destiny's comment? I don't know how this could become a problem when he said nothing wrong/inappropriate. Stephano made an inappropriate joke, but I can't find Destiny's comment problematic. He sounds a bit arrogant as usual, but that's just about it.
|
Well, SRS is basically a troll subreddit gone rogue. You have /r/circlejerk (and even /r/StarcraftCirclejerk) which are meant to be joke trolling subreddits that are never supposed to be taken seriously. But the thing that I hate about SRS is that they do take themselves seriously, or at least do a good job at trolling me into thinking that they are serious.
But honestly, as a Redditor myself, the actions of these individual subreddits do not represent Reddit as a whole. Heck, the actions of any individual subreddit isn't representative of the whole, just like the actions of a few trolls on Teamliquid aren't representative of all of Teamliquid or the actions of a few websites aren't representative of the internet as a whole. There are some really good subreddits that have very decent users, though there are definitely other subreddits that are complete garbage with terrible users. But I don't think it's right to judge Reddit as a whole for the actions of a community of trolls, especially trolls like SRS who frequently go out of their way to harass other communities and subreddits.
Just my little rant.

So what was Destiny's comment? Was it this? "Even if he did bang a 14 year old, no. That's not what "pedophile" means, go look it up."
If yes, in which context did he say it? The OP is not very informative btw.
