THE MAYAN CALENDAR: END OF THE WORLD(?) Many believe that December 21, 2012 will be the escathological date for cataclysmic or transformative events. This date is regarded as the end-date of a 5125-year-long cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. Various astronomical alignments and numerological formulae have been proposed as pertaining to this date, though none have been accepted by mainstream scholarship. A New Age interpretation of this transition is that this date marks the start of time in which Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era. Others suggest that the 2012 date marks the end of the world or a similar catastrophe. GALACTIC ALIGNMENT The Galactic Alignment is the alignment of the December solstice sun with the Galactic equator. This alignment occurs as a result of the precession of the equinoxes. Precession is caused by the earth wobbling very slowly on its axis and shifts the position of the equinoxes and solstices one degree every 71.5 years. Because the sun is one-half of a degree wide, it will take the December solstice sun 36 years to precess through the Galactic equator. The precise alignment of the solstice point (the precise center-point of the body of the sun as viewed from earth) with the Galactic equator was calculated to occur in 1998 (Jean Meeus, Mathematical Astronomy Morsels, 1997). Thus, the Galactic Alignment "zone" is 1998 +/- 18 years = 1980 - 2016. This is "era-2012." This Galactic Alignment occurs only once every 26,000 years, and was what the ancient Maya were pointing to with the 2012 end-date of their Long Count calendar. POLAR SHIFT The pole shift theory is a hypothesis that the axis of rotation of a planet has not always been at its present-day locations or that the axis will not persist there; in other words, that its physical poles had been or will be shifted. Pole shift theory is almost always discussed in the context of Earth, but other solar system bodies may have experienced axial reorientation during their existences. Scientists calculate that the next reversal will be in 2012. THE PLANET CALLED "X" The myth that the world will end in December 2012 started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is heading toward Earth. Zecharia Sitchin, who writes fiction about the ancient Mesopotamian civilization of Sumer, claimed in several books (e.g., The Twelfth Planet, The Stairway to Heaven, The End of Days) that he has found and translated Sumerian documents that identify a planet — Nibiru — orbiting the Sun every 3,600 years. Sitchin's Sumerian fables include stories of astronauts visiting Earth from an alien civilization called the Anunnaki. After these books appeared, Nancy Lieder, a self-declared psychic, wrote on her web site ZetaTalk that the inhabitants of a fictional planet orbiting the nearby star Zeta Reticuli warned her that Earth was in danger from Nibiru. The prediction said the collision of Nibiru and Earth would occur in May 2003. When nothing happened in that month, claimants moved the doomsday date forward to December 2012. Only recently have people linked these two fables to the end of the Mayan long-count at the winter solstice in 2012 — hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012. NASA Q&A Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012. The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012. Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012? Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar. Could planets align in a way that impacts Earth? There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. One major alignment occurred in 1962, for example, and two others happened during 1982 and 2000. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence. Is there a planet or brown dwarf called Nibiru or Planet X or Eris that is approaching the Earth and threatening our planet with widespread destruction? Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles. What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the Earth's crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours? A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-switch to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. Scientists believe a magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia. Is the Earth in danger of being hit by a meteor in 2012? The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA Near-Earth Object Program Office website, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012. "The Maya had the equivalent of months with each one being 20 days in length and years made up of eighteen of their 20 day months and an additional five day period at the end to add up to 365 days" (Feder, p. 415). Their longer cycles like decades and centuries, etc. were based on multiples of twenty, rather than, multiples of ten like ours. One of their longer cycles does indeed fall on December 21, 2012, however, "the Maya did not, in any inscription found anywhere in their realm, maintain that anything particularly momentous would occur then, least of all the end of time" (Feder, p. 415). Moreover, the Mayans used the calendar as a system of timekeeping to schedule events, including celebrations for their honored rulers. In fact, there is a continued celebration of "Pascal's ascension to the throne" long after his death and well past December 21, 2012 (Feder, p. 415). So, what does this mean? It means the preconceived notion that the calendar stops at one point in time is completely false. The longer cycles continue to convey the passing of time. The Maya were intellectuals living in a city-state, who figured? Info. from the textbook: The Past in Perspective

As for my own prediction, it will be because Valve releases Techies for Dota 2. Every bad player in the game will constantly pick Techies. This will cause an inexorable amount of frustration, and potentially misplaced hate against Russians, increasing political tensions in Europe. This will incite several riots across Europe, China, and the Americas, and will culminate in a rogue military group launching attacks against Seattle in an attempt to stop Valve and initiating WW3.

The mayans used a calendar which is based on alignments and stuff, what we know as 21 by our gregorian calendar just happens to be the day their calendar ended. One reason why scientists think the world will not end is because it is more reasonable that they just felt it isn't worth making a new one since they didn't felt living for an other thousand and some years was guaranteed.

Yeah I can totally relate to this. Even though I have absolutely no reason to believe in God, I still find some comfort when I hear a good atheist can still go to heaven. I suppose its silly, but the prospect of being tortured for an eternity, however slim, is not a pleasant one to say the least.

Thus, the Galactic Alignment "zone" is 1998 +/- 18 years = 1980 - 2016. This is "era-2012." Nobody calls this "era-2012" except the people who think something will happen on December 21st of this year. The scientists would have absolutely no reason to call it "era-2012" since 2012 is in no way a particular year regarding this alignment. [Regarding the polar shift] Scientists calculate that the next reversal will be in 2012. This is simply not true. Scientists don't believe the reversal will happen this year.

Therefore, the fact that 26% of this poll is currently "Yes" scares me beyond all reason and words. Get ready for it, dem zombies are coming! Stock on food weapons and booze cause this is gonna be a long couple of months! "Prophezeiungen zur Zukunft Europas" (Stephan Berndt von Reichel) What makes this specific book funny to read is that it was published in 1997 and his methods actually DID get some things down pretty accurately. One thing I remember as being pretty cool in hindsight is that he found lots of European sources "announcing" 9/11. In the end his conclusion for that case was that some arab/muslim organisation will sucessfully attack the Statue of Liberty and/or the White House in autumn 2001 and the retaliation will cause a decade of war in the middle east. =P ...obviously a lot of his predictions also failed horribly. iirc he basically tried the same in books he published in 2005 and 2009 but I didn't read those. Overall it's a cool read because it was one of the most methodical approaches to the topic I've seen so far. Still mostly failed. PS: His scenario for WW3 was pretty much about Russians invading Central Europe, being stopped in the middle of Germany because OMG COSMIC EVENT and then suddenly OMG 3 DAYS OF DARKNESS and BAM HELLO AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT. PPS: iirc the Mayan calender isn't ending either. From what I understand they have 4 big ages that keep rotating similar to seasons just on a much longer scale. So even if you're into this stuff the most you can say is "the end of the world as we know it". ITS NOT GONNA EXPLODE PPL.

I recommend watching the entire video for the sake of it when you have time. There's a good nugget every 5min or so. Some people think that the media is trying to get people to believe something bad/apocalyptic will happen on Dec 21, thereby helping the thing to happen so that the Illuminati can kill a bunch of people. I personally don't believe it's worth worrying about such a scenario because in the event of such a situation, I'm dead anyway. Might as well reject that belief, and by rejecting, it also contributes to something positive. What I would like to see happen is as many people globally doing something at the same time. For example, if we got everyone in the world to sing, mediate, or participate in "come to the town square and hug each other day" maybe something good would happen regardless of the date. Also the Egyptian pyramids (I say Egyptian because there are pyramids all over the world) are a marker for the Sphinx, which looks toward a direction in the sky. Well, people figured out that there are four stars in the sky that don't ever move relative to each other, and one of them will be lined up with the Sphinx's gaze on or around Dec 21. Then they said ok, so this could be a clock with the Sphinx's gaze as the "hand" but when does the clock start? Well one of the stars is Regulus, aka the Lion's Heart, and there is this big mound in the Sphinx's chest region, and the Sphinx is a lion with a man's head. Edit: also in the Sphinx clock, 12/21/12 is the exact point at which the "sun rises" on the precessional "day" meaning that the past 13000 years were the "night" and the next 13000 years will be the "day" (meaning good stuff happen)

Mayan said that between the 20 and 23, there will be a burst of spiritual energy that will last about 8 minutes on earth. Still according to them, this energy will make us see things in a different way... also called spiritual ascension or spiritual awakening. They only say to get your pen and papers ready to write all your new ideas for when this spiritual awakening will happen. All the world ending drama is cross-reference speculation/miss-interpretation that has nothing to do in what Mayan actually believed.

However, wouldn't it be kinda cool if there actually was like a meteor heading toward earth, and all the governments had to work together to deflect it? Just came to mind b/c a meteor hitting the earth would be the best "guess" for how an actual doomsday would occur (even though it's been disproven for the 21st).

1. A massive meteor hitting earth and whipping out most of life. As we search actively for those objects unlikely that will miss a big one so close to earth. 2. Yellowstone supervolcano eruption that will destroy USA and plunge the world into few decades of winter. It erupts roughly every 600,000 years and the last eruption was 640,000 years ago, and in recent years the site shows signs of activity. If so, interesting how the Mayans found out the exact date of the eruption. 3. Man made World War 3. May happen if Israel attacks Iran, but both sides aren't ready yet. What can happen is some extremists using the date to make a world shaking event. Also, WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!: + Show Spoiler + It was seen on March this year. Some people think it's a stargate for alien planet sized ships. If it is authentic NASA image, it really creeps me out To clarify: I don't believe the world will end in a week from now. "We may thus liken the evolution of consciousness to the climb of a cosmic pyramid that took its beginning already at the Big Bang 16 billion years ago. This climb is designed to take us to the ninth and highest level where a non-dualist perception of the world will be brought to us. ... By October 28, 2011 all of these Underworlds will be coming to their completion and so there is every reason to believe that the year 2012 will be a year when a new reality settles, a reality where the experience of linear time has come to an end and the consciousness altering cycles that are still today driving the evolution of human history will come to an end. " ~http://www.world-mysteries.com/sar_3_1.htm If you want information on how the Mayan calendar actually was created, check this site out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerican_Long_Count_calendar#Correlations_between_Western_calendars_and_the_Long_Count_calendar Basically, the year 2012 is the end of the 12th b'ak'tun, which is simply an interval of time for the Mayan calendar; every few b'ak'tuns represents a creation cycle. Once the 13th b'ak'tun starts (the end of 2012), it will represent an entire new creation cycle. This does NOT mean that everything will be *wiped out*; the cycle resetting is something that Mayans looked FORWARD to. ""For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."" ~http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/2007-03-27-maya-2012_n.htm Think of it this way: The end of a b'ak'tun is like the end of a month or a season, and the end of a creation cycle is analogous to the end of a calendar year. After each calendar year, we make New Year's resolutions and *attempt* to work on our weaknesses and problems during the span of the next year. Similarly, the end of each creation cycle posits that we have been attempting to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves (i.e. working out our resolutions), and it's assumed that at the end of THIS cycle (2012), we will have actually reached enlightenment. No more New Year's resolutions are necessary! Here are very good references for those interested in learning more about the Mayan 2012 myth (besides the ones I've cited above): http://www.13moon.com/prophecy page.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_mythology http://www.adishakti.org/mayan_end_times_prophecy_12-21-2012.htm The (non-existent) Mayan destruction myth itself was probably a misinterpretation of the Mayan prophecy, coupled with the fact that some pretty cool astronomical phenomena might occur within a few years. And the fact that the Bible and other texts also prophesize an eventual cataclysm that will destroy everything. The Mayans did NOT prophesize a huge meteor crashing into Earth during the end of 2012, or anything like that.

December 22nd man. That's the day I'm looking forward to. Every face on the news will have some smug shit eating grin that says "I told you we'd be fine" 24 hours after they spent the broadcast discussing every tantalizing detail of how the world will end. End of the world stories are the holy grail of fluff news.

I don't remember how much of it was so easily refutable by the layman via simple research though, compared to this story (as that technology bug was during a time when people weren't as computer literate- or have as much access- as they do now). But yeah, I agree with you that people hype stuff like this all the time. But it's not really that hard to figure out this story is crap.

The worst case scenarios were that nukes would go off and that 80% of the worlds wealth would reset and backtrack to the levels of the year 1900 since the stock market is completely based on computer systems. Here in Sweden they even gathered blankets and food to the elderly in case the government infrastructure would collapse. Good times.

How ever the numbers speak to me. On a completely serious note, I once wrote a math history paper on Numerology and Superstition, and it was the most fun research I've ever had to do. The mayans were great mathematicians but they are not God. Also according to Mayans lifestyle, the sun is their life or blood, can't remember, so basically their calculations all pointed to the sun. 1. IF we were anywhere CLOSE to the end of the world, scientist ,NASA/media overall would have told us 1-3 months ahead or something like that 2. the mayan are implying that on the 20th december life will be nice and dandy and everything will be fine, and when it hits a certain time at the 21st,the world will just die.. shit the fuck? the world will never "DIE" randomly on one day..this is a process that will take weeks /days at least. 3. "end of the world" theories are just medias way of spreading entertainment for us humans,so we ALWAYS have something to fear ,or something to talk about.. its all a conspiracy or mumbo jumbo if you will. 4. i know im probably stating the obvious, but i figured i would share my thoughts anyway.

To address your points: 1) I'm not sure whether the authorities would do that, assuming they could control the information and that the impending disaster was unavoidable, why would they precede it with 1-3 months of panic and suffering; also, why are you so positive that the authorities would be able to identify it anyway? The Spaceguard Survey isn't that extensive. 2) I'm sure 65 million years ago it went from 'fine and dandy' to 'die' quite quickly 3) I think its more than just simple entertainment, for a minority at least it is a solid conviction which gets repeated throughout history.

With #2 it would have taken a good few months maybe even a couple of years for all the dinosaurs to die out. Everything around the impact site would have been obliterated instantly but it would take a while for the climate to cool enough to cause the mass extinctions. On an evolutionary time scale it is exceptionally fast but certainly not within a single day. On December 16 2012 23:08 theBALLS wrote: It's real guys. Whether you believe in that stuff or not is irrelevant. The problem is that they DO and if there's one thing I'm certain of its that human willpower and intent is a powerful thing. The world isn't going to shit; it is on average already a horrible place. I'm not sure if that's true. I mean all of those bad things happened, but on average people are living pretty decent lives. I feel like people just have a tendency to focus on the negative, or the media tends to hype the negative so much because they get more viewers that way, that people think things are worse than they really are. I think if we were being objective about all this, you would have to admit that those things make up a small fraction of the human experience. The vast majority of people don't really have to go through that. Just think of all the countries that haven't been in war or had any serious problems for decades now. I'm thinking all of Europe, North America, most of South America...China and India may have poverty but they still have high living standards. Oh no we've had a recession, I mean realistically 85-90% of people still have jobs, and others can rely on government assistance. Its a far cry from being similar to a doomsday scenario, where billions of people are wiped out from a meteor strike or something

We are going to know the next decade as the decade of doom, in which we are likely to see the start of world war 3, mass starvation, mass unrest, mass movements of different kinds that threaten everyone's survival on this planet. A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago) according to Thoth's emerald tablets it was a pole shift that sunk atlantis. i would say evidence does exist to support a pole "shift", as for a pole "flip" (north and south reverse) that does seem more far fetched. see evidence; at one time Russia was temperate grassland supporting wooly mammoths etc, then all of a sudden it seemed as if they were all flash frozen. how many intact flash frozen carcasses of mammoth's are there in russia? a ridiculous amount, some with flash frozen grasses in their mouths. Clearly something sudden happened otherwise so many carcasses wouldn't be preserved, and mammoths wouldn't be able to eat grasses from a frozen tundra as it is today so its not like they would hang around were there is no food. therefore pole shifts exist.

At the equator the Earth is rotating at 1670 km/hr so to reverse direction it has a change in speed of 1670 x 2 = 3340 km/hr. If it took the whole of the 21st to change direction it would require an acceleration of 139 km/hr^2 = 1.07 x 10^-2 m/s^2. The mass of the Earth is 5.97 × 10^24 kg which makes the force required for this 6.39 x 10^22 N which is about the same as the gravitational attraction between the sun and earth. Basically it's not going to happen.

My bad,I saw people discussing the earth changing rotational direction so I thought that's what was going on. Either way, your contention that a pole shift will cause a flash freeze is also absurd for a number of reasons. The locations of the magnetic poles have nothing to do with the temperature, the temperature is impacted by wind currents and the position relative to the sun. I swear, some people just want to believe the world is going to end because it sounds exciting, and they don't even bother logically considering the propositions they read on the Internet.

Nothing is going to happen. Big whoop if the Mayan calendar ends; ours ends every Dec. 31st, and we don't worry that that's going to end the world.

At first, I thought he had actually littered, as I couldn't tell what it was with my imperfect eyesight (not bad enough to really require my glasses in everyday life, just for long-distance reading and better sharpness on other distant object details if necessary), but as he slowly stopped it to get off, grab his walking stick and very slowly walk over to pick it up, I realised he was at least going to pick up his litter. Naturally, I decided to offer assistance, dashing over to pick it up for him and handing it back. A good deed, but maybe, just maybe, come the end of the day...a drastic butterfly effect will occur as a result of my FOOLISH ACTION! Forgive me, my friends, if I have doomed as all!! T_T

Not that I wanted anything bad to happen, but I'm actually really surprised that there weren't any groups of people trying to pull pranks or do anything actually bad today. No reported shootings or riots so far, no human sacrifices or huge fires, not really much of anything. This is pretty much the biggest letdown for media coverage ever, given the amount of (unjustified) hype surrounding today. Some countries have already moved on to December 22nd, and most of the world is over halfway done with Fake Apocalypse Day already.

If you're so bored that you actually want the world to end I'm sure you could figure something out to make your life more interesting. Just look at the guy who went to fight in the Lybian Revolution. I mean, I'd like to believe that people live boring lives because they value security over excitement and adventure. That's good and even admirable on some level, especially when you're doing it for someone else too. But accepting a situation that you hate and you could change is sad.

One episode went into some people that thought the world was ending yesterday, and they were bragging about how smart they were for buying a bunch of electronics/appliances they couldn't actually afford because they got financing that they didn't have to pay anything on until 2013, and they believed they wouldn't have to pay since the world was ending. They also didn't allow their kids to have friends over because they didn't want other people knowing about their preparations (no, I don't know why then then let a TV crew come in and film them). They based most of their life plans around this, all because they read some website about the non-existant Mayan prophecy.

So i woke up. A regular boring friday with nothing to do. I make 2 sandwitches with marmelade and sat down in my couch and ate them ALL. It was basicly heaven right there. Then out of a sudden i felt that my stomach started to make wierd noices and them came the cramps. I had to rush to the toilet to puke for about 13 seconds. It was the best feeling ever. After i've flushed down the puke sause the whirlwind in the toilet wouldn't go away. Then out of a sudden, up from the toilet, came a women wich i thought was a 6 out of 10. She had gray hair and a pretty nice body. Then, she looked at me and the said something like "djwaijdoiawjd". It made sence so i went back to my couch and watched the whole 4th season of Friends on VHS . When i got back to the toilet to see what my new found guest was up to. But i couldn't open the freaking door. The only thing i could to was to burn down the door. So i got a lighter and some gasoline and lit the door on fire. Then i said YOLO and went back to my bed and waited till the door was burnt down. When i got back the door was gone and you wouldn't believe what happened next. I freaking cat came in and shit on my carpet! I threw the carpet on my roof and went back to look after my guest. Now there were more then one guest. There were about 13 of them cramped in my tiny little walkin toilet. The all started to make wierd noices so i called a translator. The translator came and said "hi". Then my guests all jumped on him and started to tear him apart. The you wouldn't believe what happened next. One thing led to the other and they invited me to dine. I said no because i think it's gross to eat other humans. So they got angry and started to dance the gangnam style dance. That song activated some wierd switch on my toilet so about 1 billion zombie creatures came out of it like a fountain. You just wouldn't believe what happened next... A freaking meteroite, the size of 666 football fields landed straigt on them and they all died. Poor guys. The meteriote was dampaned by all the zombies so it did no damage at all exept for killing all the zombies. So i basicly saved the earth with my zombie fountain micro. One thing led to the other and i watched season 5 of friends and ate a orange. Strange day.
