SK Planet Proleague started today and an English cast was provided via http://www.twitch.tv/sc2proleague (with DoA and Monte Cristo "guest" casting for today and tomorrow only, on loan from OGN)
Something people figured out as the broadcast started was that 480p and up (to 720+) was restricted to subscribers only, and the subscription was $4.99 / one time.
Let me repeat: this is listed on the Twitch subscription page as a ONE TIME cost of $4.99, whereas most other streams have a Twitch subscription option of $4.99 / month. This led most in the chat to assume that the one-time $4.99 subscription cost will hold for the ENTIRE 2012-2013 Proleague season, which lasts one year.
However, I have a feeling (actually, I'm pretty sure) that this is NOT what Kespa/IEG is intending to provide to the foreign audience, and that they are probably going to come up with their own pricing scheme that will be somewhat comparable to GomTV's GSL/GSTL pricing system (which is around $80+ at a MINIMUM per league (GSL/GSTL), per year).
Do you think that Kespa will come in and "change" the terms of the subscription so that it doesn't last beyond, say, this month?
I personally think that Kespa will do it (once they pull their English casting production plans together), which will probably produce some uproar amongst the current subscribers (myself included) who paid $5 with the assumption/"understanding" that it was a $5 one time payment to become a subscriber.
Because if Kespa really does unveil a high-priced system for 480p/HD and VOD access (~$100-$200 for the season), I don't think people will react very kindly. Especially since this wasn't communicated ahead of time (well, NOTHING was communicated ahead of time about the English cast, because I think it hasn't actually been decided yet).
Any thoughts...?
UPDATE: I had missed the fact that the official TwitchTV twitter account had tweeted the following. So, it looks like it's only $5 total for the entire 2012-2013 season (7.5 months of content)
@TwitchTV: 20 minutes left until the Proleague season opener http://bit.ly/RIzWs4 Purchase a $4.99 Subscription for 7.5 months of HD content!
@TwitchTV: Yes, that's a one-time, $4.99 payment, for Proleague in HD. Apologies for the messy language, it's getting fixed. We're coming in hot!
Since it's Kespa, I still feel like they may change their minds at any moment. Or alternately, this may show that they TOTALLY do not understand the potential of the English/foreign market... (as evidenced by their severe lack of planning, preparation, and investment in their English stream). Sorry for the anger/dislike of Kespa that's seeping through in my tone. I can't help it! I guess hearing my favorite foreign pro's and former pro's talking about the dark days of Kespa dominated Brood War has "influenced" (or biased) me

4.99$ for each day would seem reasonable to me.
After all, they aren't running a charity here.
|
I wouldnt buy it yet until Kespa release more info about it. They probably will have some sort of payment for the entire year (probably somewhere around that cost) just that it will be on a different channel.

its pretty simple, the twitch subscription says its a ONE TIME PAYMENT. So if they then change the price or make it monthly, everyone who already paid should get it for what we already paid. If we don't we can all ask for our money back, I will certainly be getting my money back if they do change the price or make it a monthly thing as for your money it said I would get HD stream, access to archives and that it was a one time payment.
Changing it now would be false advertising and selling a product under false pretenses.
I would be happy to pay similar to what I do for GSL, just that I bought a product at a certain price and won't be happy if I was sold it falsely.
|
4.99 ... thats like 3 euro ? damn sure i paid for eg tl vs kt ... even if they change and i have to rebuy damn i pay more for a sandwich ...
dont get it guys you call yourself FANS but not willing to pay as much in a month then you pay in a half day for coffee

I paid, doubt they will change it anyway since they make it pretty clear it's a one time charge. I could be wrong of course ^^.

Well, Twitch was promoting the ticketing, so I am quite confident that it will be a time only payment.

Twitch repeatedly said it was for the whole season, so it had better be for the whole season... if not, they should offer refunds at a bare minimum.

Fortunately there is competition (e.g. GSL) that provides real value.
$4.99 per day is not reasonable.

Depends on who there new commentators are before I'll buy it, its super cheap which is a nice way to start off for them.

5$ a day with 10 bo1's is way way too much.
Also I dont think it a good idea to charge per day, both on pr and commercial reasons.

I think that everybody should refrain from buying tickets for the proleague: a. $5 for almost a year's worth of proleague seems too good to be true, b. the full details of the english stream have not been unraveled yet; I mean, did any of you guys listen to doa and montecarlo tonght? It's very apparent that the current English stream situation is not stable at all.
On a side note, i recently had a little bit of a run-in with the OSL ticket. I bought an osl ticket during the middle of the season at $10, and I found myself behind and needing to watch VODs. Little did I know, a week after the OSL, they took all the VODs off the OSL twitch page and even deleted the OSL twitch page, leaving me with a bunch of VODs that I could not watch, and paid for. A week after they deleted the twitch page, OGN started a new channel called ongamenet, they later included the OSL VODs; however, even though I was a paying customer of the former OSL twitch page, I was not given access to the OSL VODs on their new page (which was getting ready for the start of their new LoL league). If I wanted to watch the OSL VODs, I would have to pay another $6 to get past the pay-wall.
I'm not necessarily bitter about this, nor do I think it's a crime against humanity that OGN took down their twitch page (after all, the league was over), but it does go to show that there sometimes seems to be disorganization from these Korean companies, and that there might be some confusion as well. You guys should also note, that kespa, ogn, and ieg, are all different companies that have different ways of running things, just because OGN did this, doesn't mean Kespa will follow suit. (Kespa would likely follow suit in an even harsher and severe manner :D)
|
Not paying a cent. SPL was free back in BW and definitely staying that way for me. I feel like the more people throw money to watch these tournaments, the more they want to charge.
|
Are you people trolling or are you really that clueless? It's $5 for the whole season, not per day...
Also, it seems like the VODs are free on their Twitch page, they've already posted the first 6...

Just $5 for the whole season, I did not think twice before buying it.

dont get it guys you call yourself FANS but not willing to pay as much in a month then you pay in a half day for coffee I was willing (and glad) to pay for MLG's first-ever PPV arena. I paid for a GSL light-ticket for the entire year. I don't mind paying for SC2 content, but the reason I made this thread is because I think there's a significant possibility that Kespa will charge something more "reasonable" (e.g. $100-$200+) for a year's subscription which would trigger a backlash from those who've already paid for the Twitch stream. And I'm curious whether people will grab their pitchforks, since, it's Kespa after all
It's interesting that they locked 480p/720+ content to subscribers only and that they already have a special Proleague subscribers icon now (they introduced it like an hour or later after the broadcast started, because it was the standard Twitch subscriber icon at first [i.e. a star]).
|
A lot of people are just flat out making stuff up in this thread... If you can't be bothered to trust what they charge you then you might as well never buy anything again. If they do change it and you feel you've been jipped in the craziest of ways imaginable ($5=mylife)... get a refund. Pretty straightforward.
To the above/OP: Kespa has never(to my knowledge)charged for this stuff before.. $5 is x5 more than they've ever made from this. So, I don't know if you're enjoying just assuming they're the bane of evil or what, but it would be nice if you actually supported them regardless of what pricing they pick for their content.

If you believe that then I've got a bridge to sell you. Kespa just hasn't announced their pricing structure yet. Hell they don't even have permanent casters yet since Doa/Monte are on loan. Kespa isn't in the charity business. If you think they're going to give away months worth of content for $5, you're the one that's clueless.

When I clicked on 720p without a subscription, it said 4.99/month. Is that the right payment plan? When I clicked subscribe it then said 4.99/one time. So does that mean 4.99 for one season, or 4.99 one time payment (AKA not a payment plan)?
Anyways, I subscribed anyway, but I'm expected $4.99 a month.

It could be $5 per round lol, did anyone consider that option?
6 rounds + playoff = $35!

1. The LQ free stream was 360p, not 480p, I believe. 2. There was confusion about the subscription: - on one hand, the popup on the stream when you try to switch to HD said "per month" - on the other hand, the subscription page claimed it's one time

If it's $5 per month I won't mind. That's a perfectly fine price model, a bit lower than GOM's. The way the pricing was listed on the proleague page leads me to believe that that's the intended price model. If I do end up getting an entire season for 5 bucks though, fuck yeah! :D

Well, in any case, I think it will end up being more than $5 per month. Unless Kespa/IEG decides to throw little to no resources at the English stream (then maybe they'll be content to just set it at $5 / month). But if they're interested in making money, they'll probably try and mimic the GSL in pricing.
By the way, around the start of the EG-TL vs KT match, I counted around 15k or so viewers on the sc2proleague (English) stream, according to my Twitch app.
|
Why not wait until you have evidence to support your speculation before making a thread? Pretty sure its for the whole season, plus vods, considering that is what it says.
|
Per month sounds more reasonable but who knows.
|
I'll wait for further clarification. If it ends up being $5 for a year, definitely in. If it's $5 per month, might only get the playoffs.

What leads you to assume that they would charge a ton of money? Unlike other tournaments, Kespa is known for caring about corporate sponsor money only. Your 5 bucks mean nothing to them. It's not even enough to pay for an English caster.

Well if twitchtv is tweeting that this is the official price for the season that's about as credible as you can get. That being said, considering how patched together and last minute Kespa's English broadcast has been so far, I wouldn't drop money until kespa/ieg makes an official announcement about the pricing and the permanent casters. I mean it's not like people in the esports community have never had to retract a statement before.

I just updated my OP with the following info. I had missed the fact that the official TwitchTV twitter account had tweeted confirmation that it's only $5 for the ENTIRE 2012-2013 Proleague season (7.5 months worth of content). Call me paranoid, but I still have a hunch that Kespa may change their minds about that (especially if viewership numbers go up). But I have a feeling that Kespa may just not care that much about the English stream (since charging $5 for 7.5 months of content is NOT how you make any money or break even on anything substantial).

Since OSL foreign stream viewers were low, maybe they figure they won't be selling many subs anyways so they are going for a cheap one to get more people to pay and also hurt GOM by making GSTL look expensive in comparison.
