In an interview between Slasher and HotBid it was mentioned that part of eSports journalism includes asking "tough questions".
I have four tough questions for the NASL. Maybe someone can provide some answers.
#1. What was the attendance for the Season 4 Finals and How many paid full price? At Season 3 plenty of people paid the full price for their tickets. For Season 4 coupons were flying every where. I can't see why any one in attendance would pay full price for their tickets. Did any one pay full price for their tickets? I suspect the answer is very few or none paid full price.
#2. What is the Prize Pool for Season 4? Does it mention ANY WHERE on the NASL web site or ANY WHERE in writing BY AN NASL EMPLOYEE what the prize pool is for Season 4? The only thing I heard was a very brief mention verbally by one of the broadcasters at the start of the show. Nothing in writing any where. If any one can find something in writing directly from the NASL and not transcribed from some verbal comments by NASL employees I can alter this post.
I hope Liquid^Hero gets the prize money he is expecting. He earned it and put on one hell of a show.
#3. Will NASL Season 5 Happen? Previous Seasons always included a long talk from the owner, Russell Pfister, where he discusses the next season and the successes that occurred during the previous season. Possibly, Russell Pfister didn't want to have to stand in front of a camera and discuss the poor attendance at NASL S4. Is there even a tweet, post or press release mentioning Season 5?
Solid Answer: Seasons 5 and 6
#4. Why not return to "Toronto" ? During the Slasher//Hotbid interview they blamed the poor turnout on the winter, the beach, IPL5, the full moon and the coming end of the Mayan Calendar. How about this: NASLs best customers are its current and previous customers. The reason NASL attendance plummeted is that the NASL ignored its best customers. Out of the 4 events held the attendance was by far highest in the event held in "Toronto". I put the city name in quotes because it was held in a suburb of the city and not the city itself. Even saying "suburb" I use this term loosely, because Mississauga is a city of over 1 million. Russell acknowledged "Toronto" was the #1 city for the NASL in terms of online participation. Ironically, Russell's only criticism of the Season 3 show was that they needed a bigger venue so that it could hold 5,000+ fans.
Despite being disorganized at times, if Season 4 was the final one for NASL, I think everyone in their organization can be proud of what they accomplished.
Liquid'Hero's 1st place prize was 30k and Violet's 2nd place was 15k. Liquipedia has had this information out for quite a while now, and the prize winnings were often mentioned during the casts themselves.
Total Prizepool for the Grandfinals was 60k, but that's a VERY poor representation of how much money was actually won by the competitors during the Season itself, which was around 5k per division... with 5 divisions, not to mention the opens... NASL4 has without a doubt the BEST prizepool distribution for the players for any event yet.
S4 was great. The casters put on a really good show, the team had overall a pretty good dynamic and production value was its best yet for the NASL. There are a few organizational issues that need to be resolved. For people on the east coast, the games start too late in the evening and its frustrating that they keep all the stars matches in the end, when a lot of people can't watch them. Their choice of venues for their finals is a bit flabbergasting and its sad to see it end with less than the bang it deserves.
Many events have ignored Canada, despite the potential that exists there. NASL showcased it, and ESL did one in Montreal back in the day. Hopefully IPL manages to get one of their four events next year in the Toronto area.

#2 Prize pool information is on liquipedia. #4 I don't think its a good strategy to host events consecutively in one place.

Just FYI - I was one of many working on the NASL4 page; We do _not_ have a reference for the prizepool on the page. In fact, several contributors attempted to get information on the prizepool before the tournament started, but failed. The numbers on Liquipedia are based on what has been mentioned on stream by casters as the tournament was going on.

That's exactly how I read them. NASL Season 5 and 6 have been confirmed. Hero Won 30k. This is a witch-hunt of nothing.
Not necessarily, but wrong stuff hardly ever gets on LP, and if it does its rectified very quickly. I seem to remember a debate on this very topic of NASL prizepool in the Liquipedia irc chat, and what we know and don't know. Chances are its true if liquipedia says so and has said so for a time.
"Hey guys i have some tough questions for the NASL..." ... "now i am going to immediately answer them and make substantial and unfounded claims based on feeling rather then any facts"
This is a garbage post full of vitriol, if you are going to ask the "hard questions" don't pretend to know the answers when you obviously havent got the slightest fucking clue.

On the flip side; Maybe someone will make a parody of it that half of the community doesn't get.
These are indeed very tough questions. I am glad there still are some critical tl'ers left. Especially number 3 is a very good one. If the owner always holds a speech at the end of the tournament, he should continue to do so. No exceptions allowed.
The poor turn out is due to the decline of the game, people have been jumping boat for a long time and the game requires new blood to keep it going which hasn't happened since the younger blood is hyped with it's own game aka LoL. HotS has yet to exceed peoples expectations.
Someone shit in this guy's cherrios this morning? This isn't a post with "hard questions;" this is a post with you taking the piss out of NASL for some reason or another. You're clearly not a journalist and clearly these answers are completely unsubstantiated. Get over yourself.
NASL had awesome stream production this season -- it has become by far my favorite online esports show.
For next season, it would be great to see their online presence get a little more informative and organized. Posting the prize pool earlier, for example. And how about a list of how much money is getting won by the participants on a weekly basis and/or through any special show-matches?
It's weird to me how much many of these big tournaments rely entirely on liquipedia to share information about their events. Seems like you'd want to be your own face of your organization, drive traffic to your site, etc.
As for the OP, I'm sure Hero and the others will be paid. NASL has been reliable, afaik. I don't think they pulled a big crowd in Long Beach, but it wasn't really an attendance-friendly event. Two days of 10+ hours of content is tough to sit through in a theater and much better to watch at home. Maybe they can come up with some new ideas for the finals event next season(s).
Post seems more butt hurt that the NASL finals were not held in Canada again.
I thought it was a poor attendance but, i also didn't care about seeing 10000s of fans in an audience :S i care about watching the stream and the players playing.
I thought NASL S4 was good, had some great players in the last 8, and DeMuslim vs Violet games were amazing and i had alot of fun watching them. Also listening to Day9 Soe, Bitterdam cast and analyze the games. Also, NASL DOG, was so cute :D

Canada is a giant country. its a very specific place that i am referring to. its NASL's #1 city for online viewership.
Toronto =/= Charlottetown or Whitehorse or Flin Flon
#1 apparently the venue was a lot smaller, I guess that's the only decent question you have. #4 I get you're from Canada but that's not a tough question, you just want them to come back to Toronto.

See, I just wanna know why nobody does events in NYC. Seriously. MLG has done tons of stuff here that I couldn't go see because they weren't having spectators. Whatup with that?

Not such a great thread.
it was already stated by a guy who edits the Season4 LIquipedia article that they got that information from what the casters stated during the broadcast despite their efforts to get the prize pool info directly from NASL before the event.
if u watch the Hotbid//Slasher video, Slasher and Hotbid state only 110 people showed up. It was no where near a sell out which would've been about 850.
so they went from 5000 in season 3 to ~110 in Season 4. Ouch, that is a big drop.
Thanks for the solid sources of info on Season 5 and 6. This thread was born about 12 hours after that tweet so its not like they published in 10,000 places that Seasons 5 and 6 were going to happen. And , its only a single tweet. But, its better than nothin!
Obviously, if they are hosting Seasons 5 and 6 then they are going to pay the prize money.

Slasher and Hotbid cover that topic in their NASL S4 interview
Didn't they have a really bad turnout in s2 so they went to canada for s3 which was an amazing turnout just to go back to america where in the previous 2 seasons they had an awful showing?!

sense much
1 reason they probably held the event where they did.
i think Long Beach, California is a lot closer to the NASL HQ making an event there far more convenient than a 5,000 km trip to "Toronto".
On December 10 2012 22:48 JimmyJRaynor wrote: #4. Why not return to "Toronto" ?
4 Finals, 3 locations. So what, if they want to change location for every final, they do it, why would they keep going to the same ? There's NA in NASL, so they go wherever in NA they want, that's all. Even if they had big attendance for season 3, it's common to see "well, we can try somewhere else maybe we'll have even more people showing up" stuff.
I see this one more as a personal question than a "tough" general one.
EDIT :

Here's what I posted on reddit regarding attendance a while back
There are many reasons why there would be lower viewers and lower live spectators.
Southern California has had a lot of live SC2 tournaments. California has gotten MLG Anaheim 2011 and 2012, Blizzcon w/ GSL finals, NASL1,2,&4, Gigabyte LAN, etc... (also a couple hours drive to Vegas for IPL4&5). I have attended MLG, IPL, and NASL. People get tired of going to a bunch of events b/c going to an event is exhausting. Watching at home or going to a barcraft is actually more relaxing. Going to live events is still fun but we aren't going to all of them so we will select certain ones.
NASL3 was big in Canada b/c nobody ever goes there so Canada had only one option on attending the event. NASL1&3 were during the summer and both were big events. NASL2&4 were terrible timing right before college finals. Why would I attend NASL right before final exams when I could just attend MLG or IPL? Also it doesn't help that NASL is happening after all the major events just happened(BWC, IPL5, Dreamhack, etc...)
Don't take him too serious. He critizised NASL all weekend long these things, stating that they don't have enough and all the Toronto stuff and is just putting it into a thread to gain more attention. Seems like he has got some kind of crusade against NASL decisions running. And also most of the questions were already answered.
I have to agree that these aren't really tough questions, just bad ones. Chill out, let them unravel their future plans when they are ready, being a dick on the internet isn't likely to get you anything else.
I thought the finals were a lot of fun, but I do imagine viewership was limited by it being a PST instead of EST. There is a big difference for the EU between starting your finals at 23:00 or midnight and 02:00 or 03:00 (like EST is only 6 hours behind and PST is 9). I watched what I could, but there was no way I could make it to the finals with Monday morning mere hours away, and I don't think I was alone in that. Also, being the fifth consecutive weekend of major tournaments probably didn't help. Either way I think they did a great job and I just hope they are more EU friendly next time.

As a side note, quoting Slasher as any kind of reliable source is a little like quoting Fox news's estimates for who was going to win the 2012 Presidential Election.
Slasher has proven time and time again to thrive on negative and often unfounded criticism. He seems far more interested in smearing mud for the amusement of his limited and diminishing following than he does actually supporting eSports.
MLG let him go for a reason. Just sayin.
As for Jimmy, he's a hater and a troll, I suspect he always will be.
As a side note, if the NFL doesn't announce that there will be a 2013 season at the end of the Superbowl next February, does that mean there won't be a 2013 season?
Despite what you may think of OP, he raises a valid point, at least to this topic in particular.
Where's the actual NASL source on Prize Pool distribution? We already know the Liquipedia stuff just came from whatever volunteers could gleam from the stream, and not from any official NASL source.

Why is it so important to you when the players and teams are showing no concern about it whatsoever?
This is a red herring spawned by a person who just wants to hate on NASL. Stop feeding him.
What do they owe you, a bank statement? The casters said the prize pool, they work for NASL and weren't hired last minute to do an event so they didn't just make the number up. I guess Russell Pfister could make a statement but unless he decides to respond to this thread I'm not sure why he'd feel the need to. The finals ended yesterday. Just because he did something in the past doesn't mean he's obligated to do anything.

There are pretty legitimate business reasons for not disclosing this :-/
Actually, this is a very serious problem, players have had problems before, I don't exactly remember what league (WCG maybe?) Never getting their payment, flights not getting reimbursed, et cetera, et cetera. So stop calling the OP pedantic, and start looking for answers. As one member of liquipedia has clearly stated already: There is no CLEAR and WRITTEN DOWN information about the prize pool. You know what that may mean? NASL maybe doesn't have ANY legal obligations to pay the participants. So I think these questions are very legitimate, and I sure do hope they will be answered.

You say this as if this was the first season.. It was the 4th season and none of the previous winners have spoken out about not being paid. This skepticism is coming out of nowhere and with no valid cause other than a need to hate on something and/or troll people. NASL did a wonderful job this season and with these finals. Put down your pitchforks or go back to fucking reddit.

Just because it's not visible to YOU, doesn't mean it's not clear or written down. I state again that I'm positive the teams and players would never have signed contracts to participate in Season 4 if they didn't know what the prize pool was.
So yes, it is pedantic (nice word by the way, I so rarely get to use it).
As a spectator I could care less what the prize pool is. It's none of my business. If the players end up not getting paid, guess what? The NASL will disappear, so clearly if they want to continue (and they definitely seem to want to) they'll make good on their prize pool commitments.
The red-herring element of this entire thread is that there's some history of lingering doubt that the NASL will pay the winners. Does anybody recall Puma (2X), or Stephano saying they weren't paid in Seasons 1, 2 and 3? Any of the other players making that claim that they were never paid?!?
Nope.
So this is a rabbit hole question started by a NASL troll and hater. Let it go.
It IS pedantic (yay I got to use that word again).

I'm pretty sure all 8 players who showed up to the Grand Finals received a portion of the prize pool.
In Season 3 it was the case that all competitors who were in the Grand Finals got at least something and that whatever it was seemed satisfactory to them (in addition to having all of their travel arrangements made and paid for by NASL), so I see no reason why NASL would have altered it this time, other than to give Jimmy something to whine about.

NASL has never had an issue with paying players, and all the players and casters spoke about how well they were treated at the event.

I think it would be good for NASL if they compiled all the money they paid out to players for the season and posted that number... even if it's just one number of the total. Doesn't NASL still pay out to the weekly winners? Doesn't NASL give a large travel stipend to all 8 players who made the finals? That stipend is essentially the prize for everyone in the top 8. Getting to the semis just ups the prize by another 5k at a minimum. Overall, NASL put a lot of money in the players hands and I think it'd be good advertizing for them to show how much they really distributed to the players. I don't believe they've ever failed to pay-out in the past unlike a different large Esports tournament organization that continues to run.
However, this thread is certainly not the way to go about getting answers from NASL. Instead, it seems like a really butt-hurt thread about not going to Canada. If you want to actually ask tough questions, why don't you do it when someone is actually around to respond... like in an interview?
I think some people were thinking about ESL when it came to payments, but oh well, that claim was also slightly weird.
This is definitely not journalism. If you actually think it is then read over your questions again and at least try to look for answers. Also, realize that some of your questions are just really, really, terrible.
Now if you actually don't mean these questions and are trying troll, you're also doing a terrible job. It's really mediocre.

It wouldn't be appropriate for me to do so. That's for NASL officially to decide to publish or not.
Again, what does it matter?
It matters because you come into this thread just to act like you know stuff other people don't, and then when asked about it you say "it wouldn't be appropriate for me to say". You can't see how this might come across as attentionwhoring and trying to stir up controversy for no reason?

It matters because every other tournament publishes their prize pool and distribution, which we then input into Liquipedia for everyone to see. Then it is added to the website dedicated to keeping track of how much money professional players earn. Is that hard to understand? If there's an error it should be fixed, you don't need to be the one releasing the information but you figure NASL would want the community to have the correct figures on their prize pool.
#1 apparently the venue was a lot smaller, I guess that's the only decent question you have. #4 I get you're from Canada but that's not a tough question, you just want them to come back to Toronto.

I don't know how much they charge for tickets for the Toronto one. But regular price for tickets to NASL 4 is $70.20. VIP tickets are $100.90. Some serious economics mismanagement happened here.
why not go to Canada? Because its fucking expensive! They are based in SoCal. It saves them so much money by holding the events there. They don't need to ship any of the equipment at all, or fly their entire staff to another country. Its not a tough question at all. Its common sense.
Oh he's a huge troll, see his posting history, he's been obsessively bashing on NASL for the past week or so. Pretty much all these questions were answered before me made this post.

I'm pretty sure he's just mad that they didn't have the finals in Canada.

Even though 5-8th got nothing. Keep in mind that they also received money from the regular season. $150 per win. So if you got 7 wins then that's $1,050. And I assume the players got free travel (last season they did, not sure about this season).

Unfortunately the problem with that is they'll get eaten alive by IPL/Vegas unless there's a better gap in scheduling.
