I'm looking to improve and get inspired with StarCraft 2! Specifically, trying to play the pros.
Can someone fill in the gaps for me? As in, what is the schedule calendar year for SC2 going on?
I know there's GSL / ESL and HOT6 and Blizzcon and stuff.
What's the difference between the above and the WCS? Is the WCS GLobal championship?
I'm sorry that there's gaps in my knowledge, but I'd like to get caught up.
I'm currently following this:
https://www.twitch.tv/gsl https://www.youtube.com/user/esltv
I noticed also there's the NYDUS tournament that pop in once in a while rewarding $400? http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/sc2-tournaments/522152-the-nydus-400-tournament-sat-may-13th-3pm-est
How often do these pop up and what are the qualifications necessary? Are there other similar tournaments?
Some other tools such as SC2replaysstats.com

This page should answer most of your questions about 2017 WCS: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/2017_StarCraft_II_World_Championship_Series
The chances of you playing pros on ladder is very slim. Most are Master or Grandmaster rank, and yes many pro-level tournaments have skill requirements. For example the Nydus event you linked to has a requirement of "Masters +" meaning you need to be either Master or Grandmaster to enter.
There are many lower-level tournaments available within the the SC2 game client however you might enjoy.
