I notice a theme in the tactical philosophy of the race, but also one in how the race could relate to vespene gas in some special way.
The Potential Missing Passive or Effects of the Zerg Race due to being a
"1 Directional Race"
Why and How Zerg has a Favorable Relationship to Vespene Gas
A.) 1 Base Zerg More Possible
If a zerg unit that costs gas (not baneling) dies, it explodes with a status effect of "amp damage" in an aoe on the enemies in the vicinity of the aoe explosion. The amped damage would not be much but now it would at least be viable for zerg to 1 base and make both basic army (zergling) and special army (proper situational gas unit) in tandem together and function together as a viable force of power with out being considered Cheese. Of course the amp damage effect would be the smallest % that makes a difference and it seemed to make sense that the greater the gas unit cost the larger the AoE effect.
This seems to be in alignment with zerg's burrow tactical philosophy. Let's not consider the roach since a roach can just barrel in to the enemy and die to get the status effect applied, but rather just the classic zerg units. A burrowed hydralisk on the field unburrows to surprise an army and dies in the middle of the army to get a full AoE effect of the amp damage application.
B.) Economy(Numbers) Zerg Makes More Sense
Zerglings now have a passive ability where if they attack an enemy unit that costs vespene gas, the life of the zergling is sacrificed down to 1 hp upon that attack, and implemented offensively as life pool loss to the gas costing unit. The life pool loss of the enemy unit is capable of destroying it. This is a tactic zerg players have always used since it is common sense to use zerg's basic army of greater quantity in a micro fashion in order to gain slight economic advantages. Imagine zerglings using their faster movement speed to fly in and peck at key targets and then pull out, just like a single entity of swarm.
This makes sense as the zergling is the pre-requisite to the baneling. The baneling is the unit of sacrifice and we should ask if the essence of this element should be found in someway with the zergling that mutates in to the baneling.
This, once again comes back to zerg having a unique relationship with vespene gas, and in this case it is how zerg uses the gas that makes up the special units of the enemy and uses them against theirselves.
I used to think at one time that the zergling should leap at the target and sacrifice life, but I changed my opinion since zerglings have the movement speed research.
C.) The Swarm Wreather Unit Idea
The Swarm Wreather would be a unit that is morphed from the spine crawler. It retains the armor of the spinecrawler but is unable to attack. It moves faster then the spine crawler and can burrow. When it looses life while burrowed it releases broodlings in a balanced proportion to its life lost. If it loses life when unburrowed it doesn't release broodlings, it only acts as a good front line meat shield for zerglings as it would be recognized as an offensive unit. When clicked on the unit enough it speaks in zerg language that is translated with subtitles as "from darkness and death comes light and life". The unit can also be detonated under ground which would release all of the broodlings its life pool can out put at one time. Remember that broodlings only live for a certain period of time.
Of course there is nothing to be said about vespene gas here.... but the tactical philosophy seems sound and right on point. Converting spine crawlers in to swarm wreathers and burrowing them on the field for surprise attacks.
To consider more about how to make this possible, perhaps the overlord and the spine crawler would merge together to make the swarm wreather and say if zerg was already at max supply of their holding capacity the supply amount would break the limit since the overlord would be sacrificed to achieve the creation of this unit?
Haven't we all ever asked the question in the past,
Why is zerg capable of the mass production of overlords for what would seem to be an in vein aspect of their functional flexibility....
It's all about asking what Sacrifice could be made in order to implement the ideas that are culturally sound and unanimously agreed upon.
