Would War3 upkepp have the same impact if it was a 10/9/8 penalty, istead of 10/7/4 ? Rank could have minimal effects, say, two ranks max adding one armor/weapon upgrade each. It would require quite a whole groupe of fully upgraded units to create a gap... And ranking is not only a question of rewarding cautious and defensive players. Terrans are a fun race to see and watch because of their highly situational moves, like using terrain elevation and blocade to thei maximum effect. Ranking would reward the player baby sitting his attack force... One is often crippled because while keeping a largely above 1:1 kill ratio, the macro pressure by his opponent overwhelmed him. Perhaps, the developpers have the feeling that good tactical decisions should not be too quickly wiped out by overall macro building. Still, I don't take ranking as a must be feature of this game either.

Don't throw ideas out like you know for a fact that it will fail or that it won't bring good game play, because you don't.

I remember a Prysm thank on lvl 3 in C&C... so NOT fun play c&c and try to battle one of these fuckers when they are ranked up. it is fucking impossible. even if it was toned down, the whole concept seems too wc3-ish or c&c-ish. I want a fast paced game that relies on many battles, not a crappy version of creepign or games where one huge battle decides it all.

http://www.zedas.hu/exigo/ - this site explains it very well. The game featured 3 races (it was created by some of the top Hungarian SC players): Empire (humans), Beasts (not orcs, but some weird animal humanoid creatures) and Fallen (Void Walker race controlling fallen creatures of the Exigo world - in a nutshell). Fallen were the swarm race (but the game mixed elements of different SC races to create their own ones - so you can't say they were Zerg clone). Beasts were the heavy units race and Empire were the 'balanced' race (a la Terrans, you could turtle and tech to good flying units, or go for pikemen with EDIT a very high speed and harass your enemy). Fallen (as already mentioned) had an experience-pool building that helped each unit equally. The game featured 5 veterancy levels - units ling-like required 1250 XP to reach stage 2, 2500 for stage 3, 5000 stage 4 and 10000 stage 5. Stage 2 raised HP from 100 up to 105; stage 3 gave another 5 HP more and additionally a speed boost (there was an upgradeable speed boost for them, too - and a fly ability: costed 25 mana [full] - so you had to wait before you were able to fly again after landing); stage 4 added +1 attack and 10 more HP; stage 5 another 10 HP - making the unit have 130 HP, 14 attack and 3 armour when fully upgraded. Empire had a radically different boosting system - units leveled individually, each unit type had a different aura: +armour, +attack, +speed and so on. For example Knights (a bit similar to wc3 knights, but rather different) leveled like this: stage 2 +100HP, no aura; stage 3 +25 hp aura + some more hp (don't have time to count it - it's not displayed); stage 4 +25 hp aura boost, + more HP for the unit itself, stage 5 +50 hp aura boost, + more HP for the unit itself. In the end the knight unit had outstanding stats: 725 hp, 44 attack, and 12 armour with prayer ability on (+5 armour). Archer unit was recieving more HP with each level (that was a general tendency in Empire veterancy system). Only 'army' units recieved these upgrades (pikemen, swordsmen, rangers (archers), knights, valkyries (those mightuy flying units you could tech to)). Out of 15 units 5 units had a veterancy system and auras. Beasts also leveled individually. Warriors (zealots) were recieving a HP, attack, attack speed and speed boost; goblins (early, small, weak, massed ranged units) were recieving the same kind of boost (but lower, I guess). All in all - the unit veterancy system may work in SC2 as long as it is blended correctly with the game. This is KaerbEmEvig on brother's account.

Like a poster above me pointed out, one could just have +1/+1 or +1/0 upgrades for rank. Small, but rewarding...

After a long fight, alot of my units have promoted, and my 200/200 will be stronger than yours. Even if you have superior macro I'll win with 2 bases because my tanks made more kills. Edit: Nice sig mikeymoo :>

As far as Fallen/Zerg go - you simply kill the building that collects the experience (could be Cerebrate for Zerg=]) with one, well-thought drop and he has nothing...

Small, but rewarding... What's the point in adding something negligible? Why not make it so every minute a random unit gains a level, a random player gets randomly 1 to 20 minerals and a random unit regens randomly between 1 to 25 hp and randomly one of the random things happens again, it doesn't make much of a difference, so why not add it? It's also COOL, kids like being randomly rewarded a lot! There is no point in negligible things, it has to matter or it serves no purpose and experience rewards have no real place in starcraft. It's also unrealistic in such a setting, a tank suddenly having a more powerfull cannon or better armor or move speed(it already has perfect accuracy and all tanks have the same effectivness, so actual crew does not matter, and having random initial stats because crew skill varies initially is an even worse idea), since it killed an enemy?

Read my post about veterancy in Armies of Exigo. It's not negligible - it's balanced. BTW - I myself am against veterancy in SC2: I was just proving it may work in a game like SC.
