Starcraft: Brood War legend Lim Yo Hwan "Boxer" qualified for the Ro64 last night under the ID "Manofoneway". Check out short playing videos, the Day 1 qualifiers thread, the Day 2 qualifiers thread, and the full list of qualified players (thanks motbob). Another famous Brood War legend winner July (under "Fantaprime") unfortunately failed to qualify.
Q: Your feelings on qualifying for Ro64? A: I haven't felt like this for a long time, so I'm feeling delighted. I'm happy because I get to see my fans again in the Ro64, only thing left is giving it my all.
Q: It looked like you prepared a lot for today's matches. Were the strategies prepared? A: It was the qualifiers so I didn't have specific strategies prepared. I just reacted depending on the situation. The opponent's strategy was a late game strategy so I thought bunker rush would work. Also even I failed, it is possible to salvage the bunker so I did what I wanted.
Q: Until you played Starcraft 2 (guessing he's asking what boxer did just before/during the qualifiers) A: I was able to meet long-time fans and fans that I was unable to see for a long time. Of course my girlfriend Kim Ga Yun supported me a lot. If I needed something she immediately find/get it for me and this helped me concentrate on my matches. Also I had a lot of peers who helped me and gave me some advices.

Manofoneway ! Good, next time we'll have July as well.

This is seriously awesome news for SC2 and e-sports in general.

A historical date for a historical person.
Sad face for July. We will mourn his demise.

So excited for BoxeR though.

Boxer AND ChRh! I'm so happy! :D

Im pretty shure they gave him easy opponents so he gets through (same with Nada)
Boxer & Nada playing GSL will give them a lot of attention and viewers in Korea, so them not qualifing would be really bad for Gom.
|
It seems like just yesterday people would laugh at the idea "Boxer will be playing SC2" but now the unthinkable happened, personally I really do not know how to respond. If Boxer wins the GSL (yes I know the odds) Korea will flip upside down then flip back up again.

BoxeR fighting!

Very interesting too. So apparently Boxer had a bit of an easy ride through qualification? Perhaps it was just coincidence but I don't really care, Boxer in ro64 is awesome!

Dude has played a LOT of sc2. More games than me. He's top 100 or so in world ladder. It's not a new change. He's been playing sc2. Same with oov, and many others. But, now it's just official hes playing to get to the best.
Search is name on sc2ranks.com he's up there.
|
This is what sold me on a GSL2 ticket. Long live the Emperor!
|
Return of the emperor. Boxer fighting!
|
maybe they put an easy group. but i dont think they can plan for 2 people not to show up ( unless they faked the registration).
also, julyzerg and moon lost to some low diamond with 50 percent win rate so don't take anything for granted. he took his chances.gratz BoxeR and show us some ( more ) of your magic. I'll be definitely buying the day ticket for his game and if more and more big names show up, i'll probably buy the season ticket
|
I dont see alot of peoples problem, you want SC2 to develop into a true e-sport yes? It isnt exactly something unheard of these days that SC2 is doing poorly in Korea, the interest is low. And just like SuperDanielMan said, SC2 needs starpower to gain popularity. Even if Boxer got in for free without playing any prelims, it would still be a worthy sacrifice, because it benefitts the game as a whole in the end. He is like the most popular player of all time, fixed group or not, this is very good for SC2, and GOM just sold their first ticket to me.
|
I watched Boxers games agaisnt TLO and others.
In these games, he lost them all, but he played very well in each game.
He is #9 in KR ladder with like 700 games played on one account.
He is just as deserving to be in R.O. 64 as anyone else there. he is a good sc2 player.
I think he is better than NaDa at SC2 right now.
|
It's unlikely that they would have staged for Boxer to get two byes. If the word ever got out, the whole GSL would suffer irrepairably. As some newspapers are overtly siding with KESPA and berating anything that has to do with SC2, it would be a media suicide to do something like that.
I don't think anyone involved would risk the infamy, especially when they would have him back next month even if he didn't qualify this season. Ever since Savior, Korean fans are suspicious of anything that even remotely looks like a fixed game.
|
Lim did get 2 free wins on Ro32&16 because the opponent didn't show up, and for 8, semi and final he won all 6 games. 2:0 x3. Opponents were not like really silver but yeah there weren't any famous pros. But hey, ManofOneway is ranked #9 on ELL ranking in Korea -.- People can't just say it's all manipulated to promote him.
|
Well, I for one am really happy he made it through. Nice guy as we can see in the TLO and Jinro replay packs.. Hopefully his play will get better once he can really start concentrating on strategys against higher lvl players.
|
Sweet, I'm excited that he's happy he qualified. Gotta respect boxer and his love for esports

GSL prelim brackets aren't random, it's pretty blatantly setup with informal seeding to help the famous/good players through.
The arbitrariness of it, and the fact that GomTV doesn't officially announce it as policy is sketchy, but in practice the seeding of "better" players is pretty standard.

I wouldn't doubt it bud. Imagine all of these highly known professional gamers with HUGE followings loosing before ro64. Many of their fans wouldn't pay to see the GSL2 and wouldn't much care. Of course they set it up so that these guys had no chance of loosing, I would do the same and it's smart business wise. Not only that but it will make for an even better season because the last had hardly anyone people knew so it wasn't as big of a hype.

Yeah, but supposedly they had pretty easy opponant as well. (MooN did for sure) They lost anyway and thats StarCraft, you can loose to a far worse player because of weird strategies and cheese. It happens. Not too big of a deal though because next season is in what, 2 months? Jesus, I feel so lucky that GOM is putting up these prizes and actually doing these tournaments all the time. This is great!
|
Maybe it's time to introduce a new map pool that makes cheese cheese again and not such solid openings by default.
|
let's see if he can manage to do anything in the GSL
|
Rigged or not, I don't really care. I want to see all the old BW Pros moving into SC2 because it will take their fanbase with them and promote the game on a whole. Which is far more important (long term) then a measly prelim grid-luck.
|
everyone who is good at the game is positioned in the brackets purposely i would of thought,
if every pro was "randomly" selected to be in the same bracket, whats the point in that?
EVERYONE in every sport fixes the brackets so that the best players are most of the time in a bracket with no namers, so the quarter finals/semis/finals are full of the top players making an epic tournamnt
i dont understand the problem
and i really doubt theyd risk purposly having 2 people not show up, for all we know they saw the brackets and knew they'd lose so they didnt waste their time.

I don't get everyone who's down on BoxeR. This is pretty much the most exciting thing ever, for me. He was the first starcraft pro I'd ever heard about, and I'm pretty sure it's that way for most everybody else too. He was probably the most important person in terms of popularization of progaming.
Plus, I honestly love his gameplay style. He might not be the most solid player in the world, but his style is just so exciting to watch. I'm hoping he pulls something micro intensive during the tournament.
Honestly, I'm going to cheer for him no matter how likely he is to win or not. I'm a loyal fan for all he's accomplished.
Now Yellow just needs to get out of ACE and meet Boxer in the finals.
|
Why I think Boxer will own in SC2:
+ A lot of his signature moves in BW are now even deadlier / more practical: - Dropships can heal - Bunkers can be salvaged! - Nukes are cheaper and faster - Timing attacks are harder to defend against (or macro oriented plays are less safe)
+ Macro, his most known weakness is now much less demanding in SC2.
My only concern (as a Boxer fan) is the smaller difference it makes between top-notch micro and mediocre micro in SC2 and the lack of the 'wow' factor in comparison to BW - but it could be because we haven't seen the game's full potential yet, and hopefully with Boxer's GSL games will we find out soon
|
I don't play Terran but is a bunker rush really a reactionary strategy?
|
Not surprised at all he got an easy group to get to the ro64, but its good for the tourney non the less.

I'm sure he had his group tell him about his upcoming opponent.. If they said he was relying on risky, fast expansion play.. bunker rush would be reactionary..
If they said that he was just really bad, end it fast so we can go get drunk, bunker rush would just be pro
|

No kidding...who the hell cares if he was setup to have an easy bracket? EVERYONE wants to see Boxer on that stage, no one cares about offline prelims. Nada will have a similar bracket there's no doubt about it. One of those 2 guys getting eliminated in pre-lims = many thousands of viewers lost instantly.

Is boxer the oldest pro gamer in the GSL 64? I know he swore he'd play into his 30s, and he's clearly making good on that promise to his fans, I'm just wondering if there are any players older than him?
I didn't play BW competitively (I was pretty young when it came out) so seeing boxer's unorthodox strategies is frankly really exciting, I like that Husky is casting a lot of boxer matches lately.
