you do absolutely need SS for some bosses and unique packs
Keeping it on your bar for those rare situations is kind of silly, though. You're going to save more time overall by using something else and switching to smoke when/if you need it. I think a lot of people assume smoke is necessary because they play like they have it all the time, so when they take it off their bar, they can't adapt and cry that it's required to survive anything. Either that, or they don't have good enough equipment, so they get 2shotted too easily.
I am very confident that I could get through Hell (maybe aside from 1 or 2 boss fights) with only 4 skills on my bar, none of them being Smoke Screen. I'm basically already doing that because I have permanent ferrets. The game is flexible enough to let you build the way you want, I don't like people saying that you always need such-and-such skill past normal difficulty.

i am sure with better gear, its possible to play inferno with shadow power and gloom, but right now its allready painful with the 30 secs of invulnerability.

given it lets you survive from being stunned/frozen/jailed/whatever i don't see how anyone cannot choose SS.

Oh yeah, different topic: Strafe? Anyone using it effectively? It's the only DH skill that I've really found no uses for, as it feels like the dps is fairly weak for the cost. I want to believe it can be useful, though, because it looks so badass.

Couldn't it work on a crit based DH? I'm not playing one but there's that rune with +100% extra crit dmg.

I don't know, the damage seems very random and difficult to control. For a few seconds of strafing you could just do a Multishot instead, which will cost less hatred, take much less time, and deal damage to the area you want it to. Or you could channel Rapid Fire which would deal much more damage to a specific area.

Anybody else thinking of their character in terms of future role in a party/group, even if you don't have one yet? My DH is going to be a 'pure' DPSer so smokescreen is a must.

I've been liking Cluster Arrow with Shooting Stars and the 100% crit passive, open with two on a wave and your work is pretty much finished. The crit is determined when you fire the shot and it extends to the cluster bombs, so you're guaranteed two full waves of crits.

Did anyone else notice how Elemental Arrow with Ball Lightning rune hits enemies twice for the 155% dmg? This probably makes it the best attack since it does 310% weapon dmg for just 10 hatred to every target and has a huge AoE. Ok so it seems i was wrong. Did some testing and each attack does less dmg than hungering arrow; I think the total damage of both strikes is 155% weapon damage. Still, it's a great aoe attack.
This is the build I'm using atm http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/demon-hunter#aRdYVT!aYe!bababZ; I only just finished act 1 nightmare but so far it has been solid. How do you think this will do on Inferno? Maybe swap hungering arrow for entangling shot and caltrops for smoke screen?
|
^ I don't think you need prep in that build at all; when I was using Ball Lightning I barely even used my discipline for anything. You really think you're going to need 10 sets of caltrops? You're better off with something like Impale or Rapid Fire to take down tough mobs; find better equipment if you're needing to kite stuff excessively.

From what I've seen so far it appears CC builds are going to be the most useful builds for a DH late game.
Elemental arrow with fear is very awesome in a team for example. It seems better than anything the mage can do CC wise.

I'm having trouble with deciding weither to use Sharpshooter (1% crit per sec) or Steady Aim (20% damage if 10 yards away), and I'm wondering what skill would give me the best dps increase. I'm in act 2 hell atm (lvl 53). I'm not using a "crit build".

I've had times I ran out of disc when facing fast/teleport/vortex/waller mobs (just one of those, not all of them) due to constant vaulting; prep saved me every time, not to mention the heal from battle scars rune can get quite big later on, acting as a second health potion for emergency situations. I might drop it for something else if i can get enough +disc on gear. Caltrops are there mostly to give you help in places you do not have enough room to kite or vs stuff that can get close to you easily. As far as taking down single targets Ball lightning seems just as good as RF.

I was having survivability issues but right now I more or less rip through anything and it doesn't require kiting. I'm pretty sure they will nerf the hell out of this though:
Skills/passives: smokescreen (w/ 3s rune), preparation (w/ regen 45/15sec rune), night stalker, multishot (fire at will) The combo: -smokescreen (3s), while attacking obviously -smokescreen (3s) (may not have to use this right after if you position yourself well) -by this time, you will have regenerated at least 6 discipline and I find that with multishot crits and night stalker, I will have enough for -smokescreen (3s) -preparation - this is the part of the combo that is insane: 45 disc/15s is 3 disc/sec and with 3s smokescreens, that 9 disc + 3 disc from passive regeneration; with night stalker, you get topped off that extra couple of disc you need to use smokescreen every 3s, essentially giving you 15s of invulnerability.
Note that you probably wont be using smokescreen right after the other during the fight unless you are super paranoid, so by the end you will probably have enough for an extra smokescreen or two. Also, I use vengeance so during this time if I need hp/hatred, I run around invincible picking up health globes.
I'm using multishot for aoe and impale w/ stun for single target dps. I'm not sure if this is the fastest clear build but imo it's probably the safest atm.
IMO in hell/inferno you absolutely need smokescreen. IDK how you can get around it considering even in nm the jailer/anything elites will completely rape you (also, sometimes the waller elites get you too).
This. I'm at lvl 54 hell act 2 doing solo and this is the most OP shit ever. To abuse it even more, I take mark of death/3 hatred per hit and multishot/suppression to regen my hatred ---> discipline even more and I manage to pretty much have SS on for whenever against elites. With 6k dps I usually can manage elites easily, especially because you don't even need to kite- it's the "I don't give a fuck" buildTook out vault because this is just way too good.
The OP build:

You can use a bat companion instead of caltrops for more hatred regen. It's interesting how the perma smoke screen DH, perma invulnerable Monk, and low HP force armor Wiz were theorycrafted during the beta and Blizzard didn't do anything about them.

Yeah you're right and it's really stupid. I don't think invincibility should be in the game personally.
