We all know that playing HardCore could mean permanent death of your character, but even though we know we are playing with 1 life its sometimes still so hard to emotionally and rationally let go of your character if/when they die. I couldn't stomach playing anymore this morning once my first D3 HC character died ( oh so quickly too >.< ) until I had decided to get a bit of sleep, but when I wake up I'll be right back on HC unless I'm playing with my brother - he likes to play safe and keep the nice things he finds. So for all of you like me who have a hard time erasing your archived characters and moving on - lets share the stories of our epic battles, and final moments of our HC lost souls to whet our appetite for battle before we log back in for some more demonslaying ;D
I played my first HC character in D3 - Wizard. I lived to lvl 9. Met up with a Barbarian who I've never met, friended him and we adventured. I was nearly trapped away from my Barbarian buddy 3 times in different battles and certain death seemed the inevitable result in the under levels of the cathedral, but miraculously I lived (super click-click-click micro :D). My then party of 4 (grown to 2 barbs, 2 wizards) went on to defeat the skeleton king. After the glorious battle I missile'd my way into a plaines forest on the next quest. In the forest I killed a curious tree which animated and uprooted to attack. I sent a rolling congo line of magic death spheres at the creature. I totally killed that evil Ent. However, I had stepped in a puddle of its green goo which remained after the tree had died, for a mere 2 seconds, which turned out to be deadly since the green ground puddle was poisonous...
AerJinn I hardly knew ye..
My next HC - Wizard ;D __
Now I have a lvl 16 Wizard in Act 2. The party that helped me get through Act 1 was with me. Within the first 5 minutes of Act 2 my party had attracted too many monsters to handle and we got routed all the way back to the city gates - a full 2 minutes of sprinting back to the safety perimeter of town. Two barbarians died trapped by the swarms (rip Joe, Barbie). The DH and I made it back to the city gates with the help of consistent slow time casts. I didn't even really know Joe and Barbie in rl but they helped me get some good Intelligence boosting armor. Joe gave me a legendary ring that added intelligence and more before he was slain >.<
To awesome ppl who nevertheless fall beside you gloriously! I will not forget that unforgiving bloody route which claimed the lives of half of our party.
Back in Diablo II, I once took a few days off of work because I messed up my shoulder what good. And for some reason, I decided to see if I could make a HC summon necromancer when I could only really use one arm. I made and lost so many necros - but I did finally get one into hell difficulty after my arm healed.
Playing a trap assassin and just got to doing Baal hell runs, this was before bots let you afk exp in their games so you had to run down to baal yourself, no sorc to find the room for us either. I find the throne room first, announce it to people and they all TP back to town awaiting my TP. Sometimes in the throne room some small skeleton dolls spawn, these guys hurt alot and when they die explode for massive amounts of damage.
I figure i was gonna be nice and put the TP inside the actual throne room, but on my way there i get caught by like 15 of these little fuckers in a corner. I panic TP and escape with like 10% hp. Everyone else takes my TP thinking its a safe TP to the throne room. I can only imagine what happened from here, but im guessing in their panic people started killing the small guys, who then blow up for massive amounts of damage. It went something like this and the events are in maybe a 3 second timeframe:
Player 1 has died, deeds of his valor will be remembered Player 2 has died, deeds of his valor will be remembered Player 3 has left the game, diablos minions grow weaker Player 4 has died, deeds of his valor will be remembered Player 5 has left the game, diablos minions grow weaker Player 6 has left the game, diablos minions grow weaker Player 7 has left the game, diablos minions grow weaker Player 1 has left the game, diablos minions grow weaker Player 2 has left the game, diablos minions grow weaker Player 4 has left the game, diablos minions grow weaker
I never said the TP was safe so it was their own fault i guess, since it is common sense not to take a TP in HC unless you know it is actually safe. But everyone who played legit and didnt have a disconnet addon pretty much got screwed over in seconds. This was early on in the release of LoD and people in the game were from lvl 75 - 85 maybe. I didnt even get to loot their corpses as they rage left so quickly without a word

I used to purposefully do that to people...I tended to regularly have high level HC characters and when I got bored I would rush people. I took some guys from act 1 normal to act 4 nightmare. Got a nice group of monsters around the tp I made and said it was safe and then loled at the deaths. Good way to spend an hour
I cant wait for my D3 stories, my goal today when I get home is to rush to 10 then play through on HC for my first real play through, taking my time to take in the story, then going crazy with farming.
I joined a TPPK clan under a fake name for about a month was waiting for a good chance to PK their leaders, finally I get a perfect chance with my nado druid, killing 3 of them in 1-2 Tornados as they were fighting Baal. I had allow loot on 2 of them which were fully decked out, so I went back in to collect the loot and while teleing back to the corpses I dc'd, logged back in dead, was so funny.
I remember my lvl 78 amazon. Died in the throne room because of the minions of destruction.. They surrounded me and gave me a swift death. I did take a screenshot when I died and I used it as a desktop background for a while
I already died in D3 to a jailer mob. I was running around with my WD skilled to fight Leo (i.e. minimal crowd control, max DPS) and ran into a Scavenger jailer pack that jailed me and just destroyed me. RIP blammo, level 11 WD. Nice knowing you!
Just so people know. If you get DCed in the middle of a battle or something and then you relog.... blizzard will put you in the exact same spot surrounded by monsters.... >.< This was especially dangerous for me since my PC tends to lag only when i load D3 for the first 2 mins. I
almost had to write about how my level 20 barb died...but luckily not this time!! ^_^
I rolled 2 characters Hardcore in d2 several years ago. The first one was a hammerdin that was rocking hard until somewhere in nightmare, if I remember correctly it was the maggot lair. No room for hammers into a disconnect and my hard work went down like that.
After a few days of leave I came back strong with a werebear druid. Some friends I was playing with were helping me level back up with some cow runs, and being fairly new to the cow level I saw some fences and figured, "oh, that must be a relatively safe spot to- Moo, moo moo, moo MOO, moo moo." To my dismay, I ran straight in to the cow king and got obliterated. Since then I haven't had the courage to man up and try hardcore again.

I leveled a wizard to level 10 and instantly transitioned into hardcore. Act 1 went very well, killed the act boss without even realising it was the act boss. I happily strode into act 2 where I found this poor little girl who needed saving. Alas, it was no real little girl. It was a trap set by big blue monsters, who hooked me in and one shot me with a sturdy blow to my head.
It was sudden, I didn´t have time to react. I miss her. Rose was her name. May she forever bloom.
lvl 95 hardcore pally died in hell mode diablo. Forgot to toggle off of sacrifice, got hit by Iron Maiden, Sacrifice did 9% self damage -> over100% self damage -> gibbed pally.
Had my first death last night. I had taken my time getting to 10 on SC and then was trying to rush back to where i was now in HC mode. Had a game of 3 people and they decided to go back to town and i said "fuck that"
Went down a level in the dungeon and aggrod 2 umbriels (i think was their name?) + 1 rare umbriel. I had a chance to escape back to the stairs but choked on a click and died...

I came like 100 hp from dying this afternoon to a pack of Chargers with Teleport/Waller on Nightmare, probably the most obnoxious thing in history. Glad I stacked Vit.
act2 boss, so i wanted to not spoil myself, and paid a price for it. I had bough some gear from AH which was very good for my level and rushed content effortlessly and in act2 fight i got suprised... and got COMPLETE brainfart + Show Spoiler +
because it changed to "arcade'y" fight and i stood to much in green pool...
im pretty sure i could handle it if i knew what was coming... im feeling kinda sad :p
Anyone on EU who wants to party? Clearing act 1 gets kinda boring after 4-5 deaths ^^ Imho parties are easier than solo, way harder to die and more CC skills available. I think im gonna start wizard again.
Act 3 level 25 as witch doctor, peek into a door and fire of an aoe nuke.
There's several of these fucking explode-on-death mobs JUST INSIDE the door and I die instantly. Had full hp and all the game so far had been a breeze tbh, just some pots needed at boss fights. god dammit.
37 wizard, nightmare act 1. Cave with frozen desecrated spiderlings. They wiped 2 members of my party almost instantly, and the other two of us ran for the exit which was really far away. I didn't make it. Frozen in place, surrounded by spiders, and standing on desecration gg. Should have had teleport, but it might not have even mattered.

Same thing for me level 26 wizard with 2.7k hp. Instant death while rounding a corner against those suicide bomber mobs.

This... does not bode well.
Lv 32 monk here, just cleared normal. How much max HP did you have at the time of death? Not sure if I should run heaven some more or start NM.
I had about 6500 hp, but it wouldn't have mattered if I had twice that. I was frozen in place and taking like 1k damage/second and surrounded by mobs. The monk has serenity to avoid cc and that run speed ability though - I'd use those!
Act 2 Inferno finally got my solo HC DH, rare pack of mortors, died before I even saw them on my screen. Was surprised I got this far on my first try. Taking a break from HC and playing with some SC friends.
Game has already paid itself back about 5 times over, thank you dirty item buying community.
Act 1. Level 5. Got surrounded by a group of weak monsters... THOUGHT I was running away (at least I was on screen). Health started going down even though no monsters were around.
My Level 5 Monk died due to massive lag. R.I.P. Krillin.

how much HP did you have? damn not seeing them in ur screen and dieing sucks =o
On May 19 2012 11:30 ShadowDrgn wrote: You soloed all of hell as a demon hunter? Damn, I've been playing the wrong classes.
Yeah DH is pretty OP in my opinion.
My DH is in Act2 nightmare and my monk A1 nightmare (on softcore) and the game is 10x easier as DH. Vault around, spam Frost Arrow, which snares and does a ton of aoe damage. Fan of Knives does like 350% weapon damage in case you get someone close to you, and it snares.Oh, and Preparation rune that heals for 60% HP. Just in case you forget to not get hit.
I'm not sure what their weakness is supposed to be yet, but it's better in every way than monk so far. They also boost dex so decent evade as well.
On May 19 2012 11:30 ShadowDrgn wrote: You soloed all of hell as a demon hunter? Damn, I've been playing the wrong classes.
Was solo from act III norm, was doing duo but my partner died during a server crash and at that point the only people near my level were all in full groups so just went solo. Smoke screen is OP as long as you half decent reaction timing. Biggest problem I had was with heavy melee packs with the mortor spell, they like to drop aggro on my templar and can kill me very quickly.
24 DH, baby daughter woke up at 5 am, i went to bed at 3 am due to studies/D3(ofcourse lol) so im sitting at my computer around 5:30 am, need to entertain the poor child so i have her in my lapp and figure i can play some because i havent been able to play much at all due to finals. Effectivity is everything! So i start in act 3, shoot some stuff but soon i think "Damn im really tired maybe i shouldnt play?" 1 second after this statement i notice my HP is at 10%.
I then die, due to standing in a fire thing for like 5 seconds. Dont play when you just woke up and haven't slept

Keep Evasion on at all times. I switched to conviction for one map and died for it after being surrounded by arcane enchanted group.
Jottun the barbarian had always been a rather careless lad, and today he felt particularly distracted. Combat was merely a nuisance in his mind, as he crossed the wortham bluffs and Caverns of Araneae completely unharmed. Pesky spiders wouldn't be a problem to his newfound seismic slam.
So he found himself treading the southern highlands, completely overrun by angry khazra. Jottun just maintained his current state of mind, simply slashing away at his foes. His flamberge looked glorious while crackling lighting torn his opponents to pieces. He wasn't counting on his own carelessness being his downfall, as he leapt upon the next group of Khazra. As he landed with a huge tremor, he noticed just how many enemies were surrounding him. He attempted to escape, first by stunning his enemies, and then by brushing them aside with his shockwaves. He was almost safe, almost managed to get away, but as he ran beyond the axes' reach, he heard the whistle of a spear in the air. It was the last he would hear.
Fuck me I suck at hardcore LOL. R.I.P Jottun the barbarian, I think I'll roll a WD now
My monk died at level 27 from a fallen maniac , I did not know about that monster before. Will probably play my normal guy for a few days before restart hardcore again. Im thinking wizard this time.
Edit: Fallen maniac are those little exploding guys that stand behind doors. I see more ppl in the thread has died from them.
Looking for a teamgame on the quest I was on (act IV, part 2) I open my game to the public (after which you cannot close it to the public). I get to Rakanah and figure that no one has joined my game in the last 15 minutes and that I should be fine to beat him. JUST as I go past the gate an additional player enters the game.
Now I have to fight rakanah solo with him havving 75% more hp than normal. So I start going to work on him and I feel like I might have a chance...suddenly, 2 more playmates appear pumping an additional 150% into his HP putting his max hp well over 40k with my awesome 300dps. Without the ability to tp out I know I have to fight. My partners can't join despite them later saying they tried. I didnt have the time to msg them to leave the game or i die I keep surviving. Teleport across the arena, freeze him, dps him, slow him. My potions are dwindling and he is only at 45% hp remaining. I go for a gutsy call.
With 2 potions remaining I take a hit, I freeze him, I teleport across the arena, I armor myself and I press leave game. The timer starts. 10....9....8....7...my armor ends...my health begins dropping from its low 1500 max. 5...4...3...2...1...
I pop back to the main diablo screen and instantly reenter a public game to see if I was really dead or alive (in d2 sometimes at bnet you would appear alive even when dead) and....I rejoin the exact game I was in.
I tell the other guys they are bastards for not leaving when they realized they couldnt get to the boss and they all respond "well, we thought you were gonna die and it was going to be funny." To which I realize I would have done the exact same thing.
We then partied up and reamed the boss within 30 seconds....much easier with a full party.
I know this isn't a hc death...but it should have been.
Back in d2 I had a 71 barb die in cow level from letting Battle Orders run out in the middle of a whirlwind through a big pack of cows. I never let BO run out again, that's for sure!
Alt tabbed in the sewers in act 2 as lvl 22ish monk after mygroup cleared everything. But there was one of these corpses left someone opened it and didn't fight the eels coming out of it. I died while browsing TL. Pretty much my own fault, but that dude who didnt fight the eels is a bad person too ;D.

and THOSE^ are the reason why i won't hardcore anytime soon ^^.
Playing monk lvl 10 HC, almost came close once, then realized that monk's have to be so tank, else its G.G, and fallen maniacs are OP
My level 30 Monk Danica died this morning fighting Azmodan. I didn't have my skills set up perfectly and I was just trying to tank his second phase with the blood pools and meteors and got him down to .1% life trying to race him and died with no spirit, pots and all my skills on cooldown. RIP.
First char (31 DH) died to Izual on my first playthrough. 2nd char (47 DH) died to a champion pack of those tongue lashers in A3 NM (extra health/vortex).
On both DH and on for all 3 kills, Belial was as close as it gets to seeing deeds, something about the mechanics I dont get just yet, to avoid his channeling and the big slams, there's no room to run around, compared to Azmodan or Diablo which you can kill without getting hit once (as ranged obviously).
Now currently clearing NM A2 on a Wizard (40), gonna farm there for some time, to max out my bs and update my crappy pieces. Running a pretty safe build for now, diamond skin/frost nova/hydra/enchanted weapon/electrocute/meteor. No notable NDE as of now.
Edit: I cheated and bought myself a new wand from the AH instead of playing 100% self found T_T
I have played a pvp hydra sorc on hc in diablo2 once
A common precedure was to cast hydras, go to town fast and declared war on the party xD I have killed hundreds of chars with it, until the sorc ripped out due to lag

Havnt played D2 since.
I feel your pain. I had the same thing happen in HC D2.
I was carefully working my way through act II nm with my lvl 40 DH when suddenly I'm ambushed by the most deadly of foes, lag. Sure enough a few seconds later I get disconnected. Logging back in I have some hope that I might've survived as there was only a single enemy on screen when I noticed the lag. But my hope is soon crushed, my DH had fallen to a simple fallen.
- Monk lvl 12; in a 4 player game, I died at the charger boss. I was really surprised by the charge and their dps, I insta died. - Barbarian lvl 23. I don't remember how I died... I was probably very tired :p - Demon Hunter lvl 45; Died at Belial on nightmare in another 4 player game. He did all his aoe damages, I vaulted to escape but ended up in the worst possible spot ever, I took 4 of his aoe in less than a second. My hp went from 21k to 0.
I lost my level 27 Wizard Thomina to normal Belial last night. The annoying thing is I did my research on him, knew what was coming and made sure I had plenty of vitality (about 2200 Hp) but it still happened. I seemed to get stuck for a long time on one part of the screen but I don't know if it was because of lag or I was misclicking on him. Also I changed two my skills from force wave and frost armor to Hydra and blizzard but I wasn't used to using them so I think it made me more confused and possibly did more harm than good. Oh well. Already restarted her and back to level 9 after taking down Leoric. This time I'll guess I'll grind up to level 30 and get 3000 Hp before taking on Belial.

Luckily I found this out on SC, but the very ends of the platform are out of bounds even though they look like you can walk on them. So if you are dodging to the ends, you'll get stuck even though it looks like you can keep moving..
my god i suck T_T my DH died just now at Belial nightmare at the 2nd stage. i died in one hit with 16k hp, maybe it was avoidable with moving or smokescreen (but that was on CD apparently).
lvl 46 i think, RIP, it was my first and highest char. very fun, will be missed
i think i'll go play softcore now for a while, specially so because people tend to say inferno isn't doable anyway without a lot of dying so i guess i'll try doing that myself now.
My witch doctor was level 39, 75% through act 2 on nightmare. We were in the Dahlgur Oasis and there was this area with two platforms. I was running with my friend who is playing a barb. We get on the platform, with the only escape being a staircase. I click on this chest and suddenly I see "arcane jailer". I immediately press T to TP out. I'm going to finish it easily, but because I'm stupid and what not I don't want to leave my friend so I cancel it. The lasers are going everywhere cutting through everything like that scene from Resident Evil the movie when that guy gets chopped into pieces. I'm surrounded by that damned orange prison. My witch doctor falls, and my friend leaps away as barbarians do. Damn my loyalty!
Combination of messing with a new build, and for some odd reason being confident that I could stand in the desecration for longer than I know I ever have, god damnit.

Frozen desecrator mortar? I would have peaced out and never looked back.
Ya, that last death in the video, it was totally me in nightmare act 2... I was like "Oh, I'm gonna grab that yellow armor", totally forgetting they were gonna explode.

I thought the edge of the platform is the only place you can dodge the poison breath though? Does the poison breath do very much damage? Is it better just to let it hit you? I could activate crystal skin for the breath but I think it's better to save it for next phase.
We were 4 guys playing act 1 nightmare. All were around lvl 33-40 when suddenly some elite mobs appeard wich we underestimated, everyone died in matter of secounds, except me i managed to escape thanks to the wizards teleport . My Wizard is still alive at level 39

I never even tried dodging the poison breath - it hits really weak (especially compared to his fist smash). I just assumed it was "unavoidable AoE so you can't do this with a level 1 char". Save your CDs for in case you can't dodge a fist smash in time yeah.
First wiz died at lvl 27 at belial. I had never seen a video, read about the encounter or anything, so yeah... Basically went in with full dps gear (1200 hp) thinking it should be ezpz (everything before was). We were like "dafuq???" when stage 2 started and I basically went down in like 20 seconds. Second wiz died at lvl 30 at azmodan. This one really hurt, got a disc on azmo, otherwise it seemed pretty impossible to die at that sucker Now I have a 42 WD on act II NM and a 27 wiz on act III.
I have To share my death from yesterday. It was a combination of painful misspulling and a great learning experience.
I was playing a level 32 monk. Me and a wizard mate had just killed nightmare skeleton king. I spotted a yellow frozen, fast elite and saw some blue frozen elites nearby. Told my friend on skype to be careful to pull the blues since the yellow beast (the one that charge in act1) already aggro'd me. Unfortunately my mate already pulled the blue ones as well. ... So, we started kiting.
Unfortunately, I had easily survived similar situations before and felt cocky. After all, I had serenity (or w/e that imba skill is called) to break any freezing. So, when their health started to drop And my serenity cooldown went away I stayed in the mayhem for a while. Got surrounded by three big guys. No problem, serenity now! To no avail. I was unfrozen but still surrounded... My mate saw it all but with no knockback on his blink he couldn't help. I was able to use pot, to heal and blind. Still couldn't get away. Took 10 seconds (felt like eternity) for a slow painful death to occur.
First thing I did after blaming my friend was to roll a new hc monk and swear I will always have a knockback skill available.

I've tried a few skills for escaping on my SC monk and keeping my HC monk 1 difficulty level behind, and atm my first choice is 100% dashing strike with 10 spirit cost rune. Wave of Light/Lashing tail kick just cost too much spirit to be guaranteed available when you need them. Tempest rush is OK too, but Dash lets you nail down ranged kiting mobs as well.

The problem with Dashing Strike (and Thunderclap rune on Fists of Thunder) is that it targets the first mob between you and where you click, so you can't blink away from surroudns. And there's no knockback on Dashing Strike. So, though I agree with Dashing Strike for hunting kiting mobs (but I prefer Thunderclap), it would'nt have helped me in that situation.
The only skills that could are Lashing Tail Kick (not Scorpion Sting rune), Tempest Rush, and Sunburst rune on Cyclone strike. But Sunburst is chance skill so not great for surviving. Tempest Rush seem cool, but I can't figure out when to use it except those 1% occasions. So, I now allways roll with Lashing Tail Kick.
After a night of playing, I'm back at Nightmare and level 30 (dinged from Diablo!).

It targets the mob closest to your mouse, and it always dashes to "behind" the mob. Maybe you haven't been targeting it properly, because it works for me. I'd go to normal or something and try it for a while - you want to aim at the outer edge of the group of mobs, but not so far out that it loses its target and whiffs 2 yards.
Don't ever use it on molten enemies running away from you because it will 100% put you behind them and into the fire, during its super slow cooldown animation.
lol that wasn't me of course. :D The question in my post was honest, I would hardly ever pub in SC, but never ever in HC. Purposeful player killers aside, if I'd lose a lvl 60 char because of some retard I'd find out that guys address, kill him in the most cruel way possible and thus fucking up my life more than any online game in and on itself ever could.^^
Keep forgetting that pause is a thing in Diablo ._. Cleared the area, phone rang, came back to computer to find myself dead. Only lv21 Barb, so not that bothered by it. Will be trying same thing again.
The damage those tongue things do is completely retarded. Since the Force Armor nerf, I get one-shot by them with diamond skin and 22k hp on inferno, and they have to do something like double your HP to ignore force armor, which means if it also goes through diamond skin, it's hitting for like 65k. A tongue. 65k.

We're talking about HC here, nobody in their right mind is going to ignore HP regardless of how bad it may be in SC. Graveyard zerging doesn't work so well in HC.

Most of us are still recovering from the Force armor nerf, A week ago most of us had 4721 hp
lost connection after grinding out 3 hrs on my 16 monk and died to Fuad the Cannibal. Dont want to think about what happened to my monk after he died XD
I installed D3 on my new computer and once you get about 30% downloaded on the installer it lets you jump into the game. I logged into my level 23 WD who had just started Act 3 and I got a screen telling me that it was downloading some additional content. After about a minute of downloading I see my character right outside the entrance to the town in Act 3 with 2 random enemies standing over his dead corpse. Apparently monsters can kill you while you are downloading game content.
So last night I facetanked through azmodan on normal mode (ya ya I know, normal mode >.<)
It was pretty damn late though, and I was really really tired....and I thought
"dude, iskatu is goin down bro I GOT THIS SHIT"
So my half asleep brain went into that fight on a monk with pretty much no aoe or way to clear things off of me....came out of a seven sided strike with 5 spirit too little to heal, died from being stuck.
Oh well, only lvl 29 and I sure as hell won't do stupid shit like that again xD

False.
HC related, my friend was just killed by a billion of those invisible snakes that swarmed out and surrounded him so he couldn't move when we were fleeing to the sewers (NM). Sneaky fuckers.
Level 9 Barb, opened a door on the second floor of the cathedral, two elite Lightning globe barfing monsters and their respective gangs were waiting on the other side.
The game lagged for about 5 seconds while I mashed all my potion buttons, by the time it caught up I was dead.
That was in Diablo 2. It was my first and last Hardcore experience.
After playing with a normal Monk in a group of 3, after the Monk got to level 10, I decided to make a Hardcore Witch Doctor. Had a lot of fun through Act I, reading all the Lore and all the good Jazz, trying out every new skill and rune. Then I met the Butcher ...
My heart stopped for about three minutes, as I was fighting him, dropping about ten times to a mere nothing of life, but in the end I survived the infamous Butcher!
In Act II I got through Magdha very easy and my character decided to reanimate an evil wizard (why somebody EVER would do this?!?!?!?!) and on my journey someday I met some strange, glowing and green Fallen, which apparently tend to explode ...
Without any suspicion, I meleed them. End of Story :D.
36 hours, level 60 Monk with a 600 DPS gold (200 dex 17% attack speed).
Died farming in Inferno Act 1 against arcane/fast/vortex/fire link zombies. Yeah, I know, pretty much no melee should be attempting that combo, but sometimes I get overzealous. Kited them around, ran in when my CD's were up, and had my air ally dps them while kiting. Had them down to around 20%, then they vortex'd me while my CD's were down, and bam bam, I was dead.
Well, my stories are full of sweet pain and suffering. I only played HC in d2 and I was pretty good at it. I had 2 mules full of ears and lots and lots of gear. Once I embarked on the journey of making the highest damage fireball sorc possible. Spent a huge chunk of my riches to find a perfect eschuta's, a perfect anni, a perfect 15% ormus with +3 fireball (boy, that was HARD) and 10 +1 charms with 38-40 life. I wanted to fuck those annoying pallies who wanted to duel with 95 resists and full absorb, and 2 shot any zerg baba stupid enough to come out.
So after 3 months she was ready. I joined a game where some of my friends were doing a1 hell and decided to do a quick baal run since I was bored. Overconfident and with low resists, I ported right in the middle of the nastiest pack of mobs I had ever seen in the throne. It was like 15 of those red flying stygians, all stacked in that tiny little area. A freak spawn... My poor lady could not get out. She was trying to port but the blocking animation wouldn't let her. She died in about 1.5 seconds. It took my friends about an hour to clear the way and get to my body. I got looted but the items were useless since all the charms were gone. She was 88.
I got more stories but I don't feel like talking about my pvp defeats right now ;p
Started playing this week, only played sc to level 10 get to hc. Played through normal with a friend, I am now a level 31 monk. Ran around around through act 1 nightmare a bit on my own. Disconnect. Dead. To 3 of those standard fat zombies.
First disconnect I had, first time I'm not with my buddy, that timing.
so I found out something that I'm glad I learned at lowish lvl (35). Don't click on your hotbar skills, cause I just did and moved one accidently, which resulted in me just straight disconnecting. In tree plantdoombomb.
So i farmed zulton kulle this morning and i now have a 400 dps hardcore normal barb at level 30. Lol im overgeared. Anyhow onto the point.
My previous barb joined a pub of skelly king runs at level 15. I joined with a level 43. Cool! I thought. Clicked on his flag. Took me to whimsyshire.
Died to a god damn chubby pink pony
Also im kinda dismayed that no one does public belail. Part of the reason why i play hardcore is to watch other die. Anyone got a good idea for how to see people die?

It sounds like you already answered your own question.
A set of invulnerable mobs in the cave of the betrayer in A2 hell, I didn't see a frozen orb and got hit with it. It's a bad reminder of many losses in sc2 where i die because im an impatient player :D Think it's time for a break from d3 for a while. Plan for my next hardcore dh to die at 59 and then hit 60 on my fourth character.
hi all i have no story but reading through your tales of pain =/ just wonderin whats the motivation behind playing hc? like i get pissed enough when my char gets owned...why do you put yourself in that situation of anger?

Because of the massive adrenaline rush when you think "omigodomigodomigod I'm gonna die I'm gonna die", but then you feel like a complete BOSS because you fight your way out of it/escape to a new zone with survivability CDs. Then you go to town, leave the game and wait until you stop shaking like an epileptic at a disco.
I think to play HC, you need to start knowing that no matter how awesome you think you are, you WILL lose characters, whether to lag, overconfidence, unlucky combos, whatever. I always keep multiple HC chars around an act apart so that if (when!) one dies, I have a backup char to play while I relevel the dead one.

epileptic at a disco LOL yea i definitely get the adrenaline rush, i mean even in normal mode theres enough imho...

Since I started playing hc in D2, sc became completely meaningless. Of course, I am gonna have a bullshit death here and there, but that's what I signed up for. sc to me is like playing Starcraft against the ai.
Barbarian #1 lvl 53 - Was running away with low health when fighting a champion pack in act 1 just before the Butcher. Just dodged a fatal autoattack from an archer when I got a lagspike and my character was "teleported" back three steps and I got hit by the next attack.
Barbarian #2 lvl 55 - (This is the only one that has made me angry) I was eating whilst playing with my mouse only. Went in to a big pack of zombies in act 2. I was dropping health faster than I thought I would and I was going to click on the revenge button, but ended up dragging it off my action bar, so I died...
Monk lvl 24 - I was grinding maghda for xp, and decided to switch it up a bit by killing belial. I had already killed him twice before that, so I just went in for fun. When he started doing his AOE I popped Seven-Sided Strike. I was completely unaware of the fact that this zooms in the screen on that particular bossfight. Because of the extensive zoom-in I was hardly able to move, because I was always clicking on belial and kept attacking. Then 4 aoe's went off beneath my feet and Boom! Dead.
I need to start playing more safe. Hopefully my newly-made wizard will survive up to lvl 60.
Level 37 DH nightmare, hooked out of discipline at Butcher into the flame grid - the grid did the killing blow. Level 46 Monk, jailed and then consecutively frozen twice in a row by rare Savage Beast (frost one in act 3 caverns lvl2) - they charged all at once, Serenity on 2 sec remaining cd.
2 Monks lvl 51 and 50. First died due to disconnect when i was chased by 5180273 mobs, second to lag spike when facing a few blues. And I'm not even angry about it, which seems kind of weird to me. Will also take a break now.
My friend and I were rampaging through act 3 normal, when we decided to split up to find the next dungeon faster. Freak internet outage while killing pack of mobs. I'm going by a buddy system from now on.
My first HC character just died while doing Azmodan DH Lvl52
Leveld to 52 right before Azmodan, checked if I got any usefull skills and went in. Azmodan made his big circles, I wanted to jump away but somehow it didnt work. Looked at my skill bar: fuck! seems like I skilled shit while checking for the updates. Summary: I was too slow and died.
Before it was working really good, just got a new weapon etc. etc. Maybe gonna try a monk now...
Lvl 45 Act 3 nightmare Barb: I was taking on a pack of champions and hit qwer instead of 1234 and wondered why nothing happened. When I finally realized it I was almost dead and the potion was on cooldown-->gg Now trying WD.
lol I could have told him not to farm that chest based on my experiences in SC. He may have lived had that knockback not hit him in the complete opposite direction that it should have, but i guess it's whatever.

I think knockback always hits you away from where you character is facing. In this case, he was unlucky that he turned to run away from them just before the knockback hit.
Brutal way to die.. so close to a WP and dungeon entrance, but no way to reach it..
Playing HC in a game that depends on outside servers and the internet is truly hardcore. I used to do this in d2 a lot but I dont think I would with the current game. Losing a toon is one thing but losing a toon to server/dc/etc would probably cause my mind to explode.

Act 1 hell, level 52 Wizard: Fighting a couple of Wood Wraiths in a choke, I decide to reposition in order to get into range (I played melee) so I activated diamond skin (knew I had to walk over some mushrooms) -- bam, died instantly ^^. Didn't have time to use teleport/potion. Had 22k hp + diamond skin absorbs 14k.
It says "Slain by: Unknown" on my hall of heroes thingy. :[ It was the mushroom damnit!
tl;dr: Wood Wraiths mushrooms deal insane damage in hell.
Me and a friend ran into 2 Champions packs on the Stinging Sands in Act 2 Nightmare. Didn't check what they were. Next thing I know Im jailed getting hit by lasers and bees. GG. He was a wizard and blinked away and ported.
Learned to always check the champion enchantments RIGHT away and not to blow Serenity too early. That's the thing guys... gotta always take something from death. Otherwise death is meaningless... haha. My friend died on Belial the next day after laughing at me. Sucker.

Bolded the bit that probably killed you. The mushrooms do a lot of damage in hell, but they shouldn't 1 shot you. However, if you were fighting them in a choke they might have spawned a few stacked up..
Level 60 monk died in the caverns of a~ in act 1 inferno. Paused the game midfight and went to watch the football game (germany portugal), came up "you have been disconnected". And i was dead. well there goes 51 hours!
Thought I didn't have to add anything to this thread in a while, but yesterday 2 of my hardcore characters died... that's what you get for playing half-hearted with only using the mouse.
First my lvl 35 DH died. Was doing the quest in act 1 where you have to enter the drowned temple. Got to the three brothers (or whatever they are) and when I killed the second one he just exploded besides me, because he was molten, and I died from the blast.
That's what I hate about named monsters... you don't see their attributes. Well still my fault for just standing besides him, thinking I could kill him easily without moving (which I actually did).
Then I made a monk and he died at level 13 already. Halls of Agony 1, met an elite monster with vortex and they managed to pull me towards them and lock me up directly at the wall, so I could not escape... and just moments before I switched out spirit dash. So they just pummeled me to death there.
I should really focus more on my next character...
Did anyone just die to that server wide lag spike, 3 of my friends chars just died becasue of it, was like 30 seconds of not being able to do anything.
Act 2 Belial on Hell... got cornered when he does these weird posion things on the ground.... Also got the legendary helm im wearing on the rare mobs before belial...

idk, it feels like they're saying "we have unstable servers, but it's your fault anyways if you die on HC because of those unstable servers", I was just wondering, that's all.
edit: and just to clarify, i'm talking about the lag spikes that was server wise, everybody was lagging for the past 2 nights around midnight pst.
I was a monk, level 17, and walking into a group of belial's serpent people in act 2, I lagged out for about 3 seconds. As the lag ended my character lay there, dead and gone forever. RIP

When people die to lag, it's usually not a server problem. It's a problem in their connection to the server (either on the user end, or on the ISP that Blizzard uses).
A problem on the server itself would affect all state on the instance being run on the server, including the world itself. The game would freeze, but not lag - lag indicates that the server is still working normally to process actions, but those actions are not reaching your client in time. An unstable server may crash, but that won't kill your character because a crashed server will not continue to process the instance.
If you don't trust your connection to the Blizzard server (including the ISP on Blizzard's end), you might want to stay away from HC.

It doesn't matter, Blizzard doesn't restore HC characters. If a Blizzard GM comes to your house and runs your character into a mob, you'd still not get it back. Blizz will, under no circumstance, ever restore a HC character.

Another monk bites the dust. Level 35, act 1 nightmare, died because of another random disconnect. Monk is cursed. Meanwhile my Wizard is comfortably cruising through act 1 hell.
Level 42 Demon Hunter, Act 3 Nightmare. Not a death story, but a fucking close call.
I was caught by a gold elite who had Jailer+Mortar. Potion still a good 15 seconds from cooldown, Preparation wasn't ready and Discipline was minimal, I could barely see my health bar, the screen was red, I got jailed and I see fire balls lobbing straight at me. I'm still firing ball lightning with whatever hatred I had and already saying to myself.... "It's over.... I'm fucked".
As the killer mortar fireball was inches from landing suddenly.... I was alive!!! Full HP, Hatred, Disc and realised that I had LEVELED UP from killing one of the adds behind the elite. Finished the elite off, didn't drop anything good , TP'ed back home and called it a night.
Been 2 days now, I haven't touched my HC DH since.
So it's not mine thank god, but I just witness possibly the most epic goblin farming death in HC history.
So a legendary Stormshield dropped off the gobo, and a skeleton popped out of a random bonepile right around at the same time. Dude "got stunned by Stormshield" and didn't even notice the people yelling at him on mumble or the skeleton running toward his poor magic find geared barb.
One shotted by skele after the gobo dies with an unidentified 26%block Stormshield and a weapon in his inventory he had up on D2JSP for 15mil gold.

Was doing those dungeons or whatever before Kulle's boss fight, I was doing fairly well until my templar buddy decided that it was a good idea to pull two rare packs, one with vortex and the other with the frozen thingy. Anyways, I got pulled into a corner full of skeletons, got frozen and brutally murdered, nowhere to run
Lv 34 (or so) DH, A1 nightmare, ran into a champ fast mortar spiderling with a bunch of fast mortar minions, decided to kite back, but managed to take a wrong turn into unexplored territory. Died under fire from mortars, trying to wade through a crowd of spiderlings.

Fucking epic
Holy shit that blows. On an unrelated note do you think using d2jsp is better for the fantastic items you find instead of the AH? I only ask b/c I never played D2 and am leveling my first HC character.
I don't know if this thread makes me want to play hc more or less. Level 16 right now, I think the lowest I've gotten is to like half health which is still worrying for ngihtmare+.

So......I should be dead, but I seriously have no fucking idea what just happened.
Just kicking ass through act II, on the zultan kulle blood quests, and all of a sudden out of nowhere a big yellow snake with arcane fast/fast minions appeared next to me. At this point it was no problem since I have leap AND charge at all times on the barb along with earthquake and super saiyan......so ya, I'm totally safe right?
Well I charge out of the surround, and try to take a step forward. Rubberband back instantly and realize something is horribly wrong. Try to leap out of the spot im stuck in, nothing happens. Try to move, can't move. Hit escape.
At this point I think I can maybe still get out if I just wait out what I thought was a lag spike of death from the 4th prime evil Lagablo, but it was...all wrong.
I unpaused, and start spamming revenge, no damage comes out, but I'm taking damage constantly dropping to 0 hp very fast with arcane orbs still being spawned and rotating. So I'm at 0 out of 12k hp, and freaking my shit hard cause this was my best hardcore so far (only lvl 41, but come on, I've had some pretty bad luck with comp crashes/DC)
So I pause again, and start to come to terms with my death, and unpause waiting for that wonderful exit game screen to pop up.....but it didn't. There I was, standing at 0 hp, getting destroyed by 8 spiders, skeletons, and tons of snakes with 4 lazers just sitting on me. I was a GOD.
Then it came to me....maybe I can use this brief window of godlike powers and exit the game!
So I hit exit game and waited.
And my Barb is alive O.o
I HIT 0 HP AND LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVED

How did you witness a stormshield dropping when you're lvl 41?
How did you witness a stormshield dropping when you're lvl 41?
There is a thing called streams? I watch kripp's stream a lot and it went down there.
WAIT?? What time was this?? Was this last night?? I have to work in the mornings but usually I end my night by watching a few hours of his stream. I must of missed it. Who died!?!

Artemis I believe, had a backup barb with backup gear already set to go though
I was so close to dying last night on my level 57 Wizard, like I was actually at that point where I'm thinking I'm dead and trying to come to terms with it.
I was on the dungeon before Butcher in Hell when I ran into a boss with invulnerable minions, electricity and waller. I tried to kite but the minions kept blocking every shot intended for the boss. I ran back to the stairs with no problem, but then noticed my archon was off cooldown so I thought 'why not have a crack at DPSing down the boss with archon'?
So I turned around and engaged, the archon beam penetrated through the minions and the boss was going down but so was my HP. I realized it was time to back off but right then a perfect wall-off is cast completely blocking off any chance of escape.
I take a potion and try to run around the wall but end up in a dead end alley. The screen turns red, my potion is on cool down and I'm stuck in the alley. Well I don't know what happened but for about 10 seconds the screen remained red and I ran around as much as I could and waited for the killing blow but somehow it never came. I'm still not sure how. Finally the wall finished archon mode wore off I popped crystal skin and got the hell out of there.
Needless to say I was shaking badly and I thought better of trying to take on that mob again and just quit out of the game. I guess the Diablo Gods must have been looking out for me last night and I was grateful for every piece of plus vitality armor that I ever purchased.
I guess the moral of the story is- invulnerable minions suck and it's probably better not to take then on unless it's some really easy monster type.

Out of curiosity, do you know that you can right click the archon buff to cancel it, allowing you to gtfo with teleport?

Tried nightmare Belial with level 44 as DH, died Probably played way to overconfident again
4th HC char biting the dust... so any ideas how to get back fast to 44? Last time it took me about 10 hours to reach 44, but in the forums you always read stuff like "omg noob, you can do 60 in 4 hours, l2p"... and I wonder... how?
There are stupid glitches in the quest system that allow quest "cascading" where you basically have a few 60 friends clear a boss, and each time they clear a boss you turn in a quest 4 times.
It's mindnumbingly boring from what I've seen of streamers doing it, and I would suggest just playing the game xD

These are the same people that would cheat/buy items in d1/d2. Jokes on them because they actually haven't played any Diablo but only pretend to by showing off items/levels. Diablo is all about the experience, not the end result.
So I played on a friends account for a couple days, died act 1 as a barbarian.
I was running through the area before the skeleton king, slaughtering everything easily. Then I leap-striked into group of them...and behold! Lag struck! I lost my first hardcore character to the server freaking out T_T.
Now that i think about it, every Hardcore character I played in D2 also died to lag... >.> so sad...It's not even like i died to anything epic most of the time, it's just I couldn't control my character while he got bashed on by normal mobs...

I think the new hip thing to do is belial cascades.

Please explain to me how someone, who's already leveled to 60 the "Normal" way by playing all the acts and all the difficulties, isn't playing Diablo because they used the cascade for their next 60 instead of doing the EXACT SAME content all over again the "normal" way?
Also while I never played D2, I'm pretty sure that there is nothing I could gain from the experience of leveling up my 4th 60, especially when it comes to HC where you could die at any point. The point of HC is to survive and beat Inferno with that HC character. Well you can't start that challenge until you reach 60.
Don't get me wrong. I didn't use any quest cascading to get my 60 barbarian on SC. I don't plan to use any quest cascading to get my first HC character, a WD, to 60 either. I've been doing the acts and quests like the "normal" way you're supposed to do. But you can bet your ass if I die after hitting 60 and I can find some people to help me quest cascade I'll probably do it. There is nothing enjoyable about leveling to 60 again after having already done it. To me the whole point of the game is what can you do in Inferno and what awesome loot can you farm.

I see what you are saying. I feel that the goal of Hardcore is to actually survive till end-game. Not being rushed their and beating the final boss. When I used to play D2 I would not transfer items or gold over to my new names because that ruined it for me. It made me feel as if I wasn't playing the game if that makes any sense. Sure there are people who like to get to 60 the fastest and beat inferno to feel good. I however will not feel accomplished until my hardcore character survives through everything all acts, and difficulties to get there.
Which is why it disappointed me to find out that in D3 your stash is shared between your characters including your gold. I understand that people don't want to play through the game multiple times in a sense (getting gold/items) but I do.
Also one last thing it doesn't really matter but the level cap in D2 was 99.
Edit Act3 was the only act I would skip in Diablo2 unless I was playing with my Brother. Only because playing through act3 alone is so mind numbing that it isn't even close to being funny.

Completely agree. For me the fun part of HC is that I have played through all the quests in all the difficulties and have not died once, I have actually beat the game or come a long way in a "realistic" way. Like the monsters and NPCs also only have 1 life. Much more immersive that way, and you connect with your character in a more meaningful way. I would love a HC mode in all singleplayer games, as they then are much more immersive. Imagine Half Life, Crysis or any other singleplayer game to have HC mode. I would personally love that.
And no, it doesn't work to just do it by yourself and start over if I died, in e.g. HL. I, for one, cannot cheat my own brain that way.

Because hardcore is about playing the game without dying. Now obviously, the hardest part of that is inferno. But there's still a pretty high chance that you might die on your way to 60. You have a 50/50 chance at most to make it through Normal-Nightmare-Hell if you do it properly. So if you're exploiting the game to skip that much content, you're cheating. (And yes, cascading is exploiting.)
Died to lag today. Was on siegebreaker, that huge fatass with 2 maces just popped out, party ran very fucking far away like this is SC, logged back in to see my ghost.
So much for having the reputation of WoW, largest MMO with most players. Cant even handle a fucking couple thousand people game.
My first lvl 60 Monk died to Rakanoth on Hell, since my PC crashed. Also one Monk died because of a disconnect, but he was only level 30. Now I am Inferno Act 2 and hope nothing will crash :D

id rather let other people powerlevel so they dont have to go through the agony too.
powerleveling is a convenience. it in no way effects your ability to play.
Lost my DH yesterday... he was level 59 and I already had 75% of the level
What happened? I got overconfident, especially with the fact that I was gonna hit 60 soon and I could just relax after that. I didn't even use the keyboard anymore, sat back in my chair and then I ran into one of those brutes with their overhead attack, which took a big part of my HP and then some cultist fireball finished me off. I was dead in a mere second. I haven't felt this bad about a video game in a long time.
Well, DH is back at level 25 and this time I'll just have to stay focussed all the time. It's already the 6th time I try to get him to 60 and I can't do anything else anymore until I achieve this.

No, I don't. I don't have decent sample sizes of course, but both Kungen and Kripparian died on one of the two toons they tried to properly level to 60 (by properly leveling I mean just playing through the game on all difficulties.) And I play HC myself and have been playing D2 HC for years. Anyone can die to stupid shit. Anyone.

Level 45, just turned 46 DH NM Belial died with me. His green pool spawned 4 times on exact location. I didnt know. Had full hp, almost 14000. Green pool only does 4000 damage so I stood there and finished him off. Little did I know I would get insta gibbed by a 4 stacker. I wasnt even standing in a corner. Wouldnt hurt as much if I didnt know my gear cannot be found on Asia anytime soon. Lvl45 with 25.5% crit rate, 150-200% crit damage, 2.xx attack per second, going for the discipline build. Fuck this shit. I cant even find anything similar on Asia AH, and only options now available are 20 million legendaries or rares...and even then they dont even fill up half a fucking page. I love DHs so I dont want to roll anything else. Friend is suggesting I go on US server. Ill probably try.
I want to an hero. I realize I played it knowing she'll die, and by god, this was a glorious death, funeral with the death of Belial and the best crit gear available at her level and many of which I still cannot find up to level60. Only character I bothered to dress up nicely, dye, transparent dye on everything other than pants and made pants look like black tights. Serious vampire slayer look. And she gets one shotted in the most bullshit scenario.

Just lost my lvl 47 monk, leveling up on the way to Azmodan. I ran into two elite mobs with vortex and fire chains that I couldn't kill. Managed to somehow escape that with something close to 10% life, no pots, skills all refreshing but I'm in an unexplored area. Somehow manage to get some breathing space and my life back up to 50% when i get trapped inside a scorpion/phase beast mob. Somehow manage not to panic and used tempest rush to get out of there, completely running out of spirit. Level 49 Monk, got trapped by a pack of desecrating Oppressors. Finally got out but with 10% hp and cooldown on everything, but then one of them charged me down...

Patch notes said that was fixed. Guess not?
It might be my connection, it's been happening fairly often with my SC characters as well. I guess I should probably not play HC :/
I was kiting some easy grotesque, horde molten. They were just about to die and suddenly, from extraordinary range - VORTEX. boom boom boom .... boom boom, dead in less than 1/3 of a second.
So unbelievable. From full hp 35k and 6000 armor, 550 All resist. I could probably have tanked up to 3 explosions at least?
Lost my 60 barb in A1 Inferno, Festering Woods, I was farming the Warrior Rest to get quick blue/rares. He outgeared the Act a lot, I thought only a disconnect could kill him... and I was right, FML. I was fighting an arcane/lava pack and my game client crashed. When I logged in he was dead.
Gonna stop for a while, cba to farm again the 20 millions of gold I lost to make another char viable...
DH died again at level 56. Him dieing the 7th time and often close before max level makes me kinda want to quit now :/
After they nerfed the XP you get for Maghda I tried to get to Kulle and farm the last levels in there. But in that one water passage in the oasis there is always one of those fast elite packs. Tried 3 times to get past them and retreated every single time. And the third time I died 5 meters in front of the exit with potions on cooldown, preparation in cooldown and no discipline left...

What the FUCK am I going to write to her parents?
I made the switch from Asia sever to US after losing my lvl 59 wizard in act 2 hell (invulnerable spiderlings ㅜ.ㅜ) and the auction house is soooo much better. Dunno why so few people play HC in Asia. I'm back up to 57 now and I'll probably stay in act 1 hell until 60 this time.
My lvl 36 Barb got arcane lasered while locked by an overseer
It's probably because of the new crit focused build I played. After my +attackspeed approach was crippled by the patch, I tried something new and cut some panicbuttons to make it work - baaad idea!
At least I was revenged by my reincarnated ancestors!
Lost my 31 Monk while re-running the quest chain up to Azmodan multiple times. I started to get cocky and switched to passive movement speed increase, mantra of retribution, and MF gear. I died during a lag spike on Azmodan as I got the blood pools (or whatever) on me and the limbs falling from the ceiling. I would have survived if I just kept my survivability gear and build
Died to a server disconnect while loading a level. didn't even see what was supposed to have killed me, since all I got after clicking the portal was error 3007. Sometimes I really wonder what has happened to Blizzard in the last years.
Was in some dungeon with game open to multiplayer. Thought it was safe with no mobs arround. Alt tabbed to my other screen to select a new episode of the series im watching. Alt tab back in boom-death. Only lvl 32 wizzard. Already got a monk up to lvl 30 to replace him. Shit happens. Atleast now I got some experience shopping for socket items and putting imba gems in them. Makes hardcore quite easy.
Thor v1 died pretty stupidly at lvl ~20 - that hammer guy at the end of the Road to Alcanus in normal just plain one-shotted me. I was cruising through with no +vit items, acting like I was in softcore. Sigh!
Thor v2 died even more stupidly, at lvl ~41. I knew the internet at my parent's place was pretty bad when I went back home to visit for a week, but after playing softcore for a couple hours and not feeling any lag, I felt safe enough to log onto my hardcore barb. Run into the first mob, and immediately froze and lagged out.
Thor v3 is doing OK so far! Lvl 48 and in act 3 nightmare, having survived a couple hairy moments with Belial. I'm investing religiously in +vit now and will probably cry buckets if this chara dies .
Thus goes my first foray into hardcore. It's so addictive and yet so nervewracking!
My first and only death so far was a few days ago. Level 51 Wizard.
I had just purchased several nice "Level Requirement Reduced By" pieces of gear and was trying out a new experimental build in Act 1 Hell. It was so easy that I started to play really sloppily. When I ran into a pack of Frozen + Arcane Enchanted wretched mother type enemies, I didn't react until it was too late. I got hit by a single freeze and then chain frozen for a few seconds while the Arcane Sentries made short work of me.
Learned a good lesson that's for sure. I already made a new Wizard, got her to 60 and reached Act 1 Inferno tonight.

Sorry to hear that. ㅜ.ㅜ That's why you should always restart quests from the beginning rather than resuming them. It's annoying to lose the progress but with servers the way they are, it's much safer.
Mine is a D2 LoD story..my first ever hardcore character was a Necro..was soloing and got to the river of flame in act4..was only level 25 and roaming around...was about to hit level 26, i literally needed one more kill to level up.my health was dropping as i was taking on a mob and i was out of potions but didnt run away as was hoping the regen HP on level up would save me (greedy i know) as my bone spear was a milimetre away from hitting and killing an obsdiain knight (or whatever the hell they were called) i died...was incredibly sad and refused to play HC again..
Anyway years later i just started a HC monk - level 13 and going strong =D
53 Wizard. Was running around in A1 Hell with 8k DPS and 35k Hp and thought myself invincible, until I got surrounded by 50 Cultists in Leorics Manor. Apparently no single hit took away more than 15% of my hp so Illusionist never triggered
first ever HC char, level 52 barb. had lived past 3 of my DHs, and 1 or 2 of another friend's barbs. had survived a few close calls, but felt luck was on his side.
cue the entrance to the cathedral in hell, where you fall in and there's no exit. right after the first door, a pack of arcane / vampire / electric, with now here to run.
Woke up early this morning logged on my 27 demon hunter to finish act 3.
Going down the tower to Cydaea.. in the middle of a big fight with phase beasts, succubus, and a few random other mobs and my game freezes... screen goes blank.. le sigh. ( I had just potioned )
About 5 seconds later it all comes back, I am at a sliver of HP. I smokescreen and vault out of the mobs. WHEW MADE IT.
This was my 1st hc char. I had not played in like 3 weeks, but figured I would play it while listening to this weeks episode of inside the game.
52 barb act 1 hell, was just fighting an elite pack not paying any attention to the game, but laughing at some joke made in itg, and then I just died, wasnt even a particularly tought elite pack, so yeah, I blame djwheat for killing my hc char <3
Looks like a lot of people are dying to lag/server issues... Pretty stupid, if you ask me.
Just made my first HC char, lvl 11 wizard (because i've never played one so playing it HC is a great idea). She's called IWillNotLive, and I expect her to live up to the name, although she lives. For now.

It almost got my lvl 55 barb. Was fighting regular zombies in Act I Hell, and the game timed out for a good 30 seconds. Then I was hit by 300 damage point attacks with some passive regen from gear for 30 seconds. Brought me down to about 2k life. Withouth the passive regen, I would have been dead for sure. And of course, had I been fighting anything but the weakest possible enemies, I would have been dead for sure.
First died to Jailer straight into frozen with desecration, stunlocked for a solid 13 seconds until dead.
Second died to Belial's new 3 minute enrage timer. Had him 8% before enrage.
Third I decided to go 2 hander to mix it up. Was great fun until I got one shot by a champ group of dark berserkers ( 4x slow swings while trapped in wall ).
Fourth is soon to be 60, Will go 2 hander again and hopefully I'll have learned from the experience to not take leap of my bars.

That spot is a trap spot. No exit strategy once you go in there so you need to make damn sure you can handle packs if they are on the other side ^^.

Yep. Farming act 3 hell right before Azmo. 15 seconds of not being able to do anything while an arcane/fast/desecrator elite pack has their way with my 60 monk.

Similar situation to me, I was in Hell killing mobs with a lower level friend, he almost instantly died, but I was lucky enough to only be against a few relatively weak mobs. Came back with 1/3 hp or so.

With the game lagging out / servers randomly crashing once a day you guys are true champions... I really want to play HC but I'm not as much as touching it until the servers are stable, my old nerves are far too valuable :p
Poor Wizard died..she just got to level 42. had 1800 dps, 6900 hp. Totallt underestimated the dmg Belial can do when doing the exploding acid on the ground. wasnt quick enough to use my health potion. My diamond skin was on cool down. ;__;

When I got diablo I leveled one character to 10 and then started a hardcore character so everything after lvl 10 I had never done before or even seen. My first character was a monk. I played with a friend who died at lvl 16 after tabbing out to check facebook. The monk died halfway through act 1 NM, ran ito a giant pack of those moon clan things and pulled a elite pack of wallers who quickly built a square around me and 20 mobs. I was level 35 when that happened. Second character was a barbarian. Was running around at level 16 in act 2 when I came to a buried ship and triggered a quest. All of the sudden about 10 of those baneling type mobs spawned and blew me up. Third character was a monk who died at Maghda on lvl 16. Still not sure what the hell happened. Now playing my fourth character, a lvl 35 barbarian who is cruising through Act 1 NM atm.
so, first HC char is nearing Belial on nightmare mode. skip him right? I can handle any other boss, but I die on him 50% of the time with my other chars. he just feels to risky to attempt after spending so much time leveling.

As long as you're overgeared and leveled (which you should always be really when playing HC) he's fine, but otherwise better skip him.
My is pretty silly guys. I usually rush through normal and nightmare stages and in act2 of nightmare i was on the desert(dont remember how it's called in the game) and there were like 7-10 zombies near each other. My 42 level monk used a spell that pulls all the monsters to itself and i got stuck surrounded by poor zombies. Then i tried to escape or kill them as fast as possible but i noticed that i don't have monk energy anymore. Then i wanted to use potion but it was still on cooldown from the previous fight. GG, that's how my rush ended.
On June 30 2012 21:24 Nerchio wrote: My 42 level monk used a spell that pulls all the monsters to itself and i got stuck surrounded by poor zombies.
Well, I had the same Situation with one of my monks. First pack of suicide bombers in act 2 and a few seconds before the fight I swapped my healing skill and this stupid "pull all monsters" one. RIP, gg, no re, but I will never use this spell once again for sure. ^^
My new monk is on nightmare again though, kind of an achievement for me, because I suck at melee combat.
Just got to NM with my monk as well. Is anybody using Wave of Light with Exploding Light? At this level, I find it very useful for clearing large groups if I get surrounded. And with Transcendence, it heals me a pretty large amount.
Then again, I guess in NM I can probably use any skill and still survive... I'd like to find a way to incorporate Blinding Flash in my build, though. I swapped it out in favor of Breath of Heaven, but now I miss it.
52 lvl barb, hell act 1, farming warrior's rest. elite archers group, arcane enchanted, mortar, something burn wrath, jump in, dont care about lazors, wrath over, forget that you can actually die now, fight till 10% hp, leap away, die from mortar, laugh/cry 19h gameplay
Well, me and my friend have been levelling HC Wizard's together. I didn't die, but my friend did.
The funny thing is, he had about twice as much health as me despite both of us being the same level (36), and he had overall better gear.
(My wizard, who is still alive, is called IWillNotLive, for the record)
I think he got distracted by something and lost focus for a moment, not noticing his character was steering into an elite pack. He was surrounded and killed by three different arcane orbs.
His first reaction was hilarity. Later he came to terms with what had happened (we're the type of HC players that tend to be really careful when playing; grind a lot, etc) and went into his just-broke-up, need-bucket-of-ice-cream phase.

R.I.P. IWillSurvive.
Hahaha that's funny. Also I didn't know there was a hall of fallen heroes, time to start playing hardcore.
Blizzard just came out and stated in a blue post that the average life of hardcore characters is 6 hours. That's pretty damn quick.
Made level 55 myself today. Was playing with a 57 WD who ran straight into a pack with mortar and 2 other mods I didn't see in Act 2 sewers. He died, quit, and re-created a new character all in the span of 30 seconds. Can't fault his determination I guess.
On July 22 2012 11:29 Psyqo wrote: Blizzard just came out and stated in a blue post that the average life of hardcore characters is 6 hours. That's pretty damn quick.
i guess thats because vast amounts of noobs try hc, fail horribly in act1 or 2 within the first 6 hours and then quit.
Died a few minutes ago, monk level 57 in Act II Hell. I was well equipped with 260AR and about 30K hp, but I got into a pack of fire chains, waller, desecrator mobs together with some spiders (those that slow you down) and they simply locked me in place. I ran for a while, then I found walls all around me and the mobs surrounded me.
I couldn't move. I tried teleporting away a few times, but to no avail. I lasted a bit with Serenity, heals and my pretty good life on hit, but I just couldn't move and you can't stand in fire chains / desecrator forever.
It's too bad I couldn't hit level 60, but not a big deal. Time to roll another char!
Haha first HC character, went Barb, figured yayaya will be ez pz, no deaths till nightmare, and then.....
Running through that zoltan kule dungeon of sorts (I am bad with names of dungeons and mini bosses etc), I meet a few exploding guys, who deal a hefty bit when they blow up in your face. No big deal, take it slow. Turns out, they disagreed, and an elitemob that I didn't see walled me in (my god, the walling AI is good now), and 4 fkers promptly run in and blow up in my face. My jump thingie was on cd. I was a mere level 21 :D
Have started again, went DH (use a DH in SC, so I feel most comfortable with that), no problems so far :D
One thing I love about HC though is the AH, so much better. I mean I can sell lvl 3 whites, and buy top range gear at my lvl (20ish) for the same price, it is crazy, and means I actually AH most blues and all golds that I don't use xD
First Hardcore character just died after killing Inferno Skeleton King. Got feared into a corner and walled there until desecrator killed him. I don't think I'm going to remake.
Farming A1 with freshly bought gears to respec for a CM build from kiting, ran into Champion Dark Cultists with Molten/Firechains/Fire/Something Else, they ran around me, started dropping like a brick. Had Diamond Skin on, potted, and teleported away, but still died in about a second. I guess 350k EHP+DS still wasn't enough to facetank A1.
After all the exploits that are being revealed though, not gonna remake. Just gonna sell all my stuff, trade to SC, and then cash out.

In my opinion the melee classes are just better for inferno in HC. I had a wiz with about 450k EHP buffed (700-800 resists, 7k armor 38k life) but it got raped in about 0.01 seconds in act one by vortex/fire chains/arcane/something pack.
On the other hand I had a monk with much worse gear (440 resists, 5.5k armor 40k life) and had no problem progressing through act one. The extra 30% damage reduction is huge.
The argument I suppose is that range classes are supposed to never be hit, but when you have things like vortex, fast teleport etc. in reality you're not always going to be able to avoid every kind of damage. It's fine in SC where increased dying can be compensated for by killing stuff faster but in HC you're generally going to be better off with a monk or barb than anything else IMO.

Yea, it's true. I didn't have any trouble with any packs up until those Dark Cultists; even when things would get momentarily unfrozen, or there popped out an arcane sentry or something, I wouldn't take more than maybe 10% of my HP per hit. Not knowing just how fast the damage on certain affixes stacks up can definitely get someone killed.
Basically in Normal, Act 3, just before Cydaea. Level 29 Barbarian and crazily overgeared since I spend time in the AH, so almost zero chance of dying since I oneshot everything with Cleave Rupture and quite tanky as well...
Until there was a minor power outage. My PC turned off for a split second while I was facing a few white mobs, turned back on, logged back in after a few minutes and then I was met with the news that my hero died from a phasebeast.
So I guess it takes a while until the game logs you out? I'm assuming my Barb was just sitting there, AFK even though my PC is turned off.
If I was playing on a laptop, I guess this wouldn't have happened.

I guess.. Though it was literally a split second power outage, where it turns off and turns on immediately right after. It was very depressing since I didn't get to see my death, nor could I do anything about it.
Are you sure it's only 10 seconds? I don't even think I would've died within that time since I was tanking everything. Sucks.

Some people like to use thorns in hc for reasons such as this so you may want to keep that in mind for the next char you roll.
Yeah, good call. Most likely would've been able to live if I had thorns, as honestly I don't think 10 seconds was enough time to kill me at that point. They weren't elites either, so yeah.
Mine's so bad. I afk'd in a spot I thought was safe, left to cook. I come back and there's one of those giant tree wraith things standing over my body. =/ Level 34 Barbarian.
Azmodan had just popped out to tell me how my hero and all his kind would be wiped off the face of sanctuary; boy I should've listened. It was near the entrance to the tower of the cursed (?), when I spotted a pack of Bloated Malachor (Colossal Golgor type monster) - Arcane Nightmarish: They hurt like mad. Usually I wouldn't even lose much hp fighting anything, but these guys are on steroids or something. I ran backwards after taking a few hits to think of how I should approach this fight. I pulled one minion away and punched punched punched, he was down to 50% but I was down even more. I decided that I could tempest rush past them instead. All 3 minions were on my screen now, so I guess it should be safe to go. I tempest rushed past the three easily and then I saw their boss ahead of me. "Not enough spirit", wailed my poor character - I was stuck between 3 fat arcane spewing nightmarish bastards on steroids and their leader on a narrow path. I hit to gain spirit then mashed my serenity button, then I saw an opportunity: there was a spearman behind the boss. Come on please let me thunderclap to it - "Nope", says blizzard. And then my deeds of valor will be remembered.
Sigh I guess I should've rerolled or pulled them to a more open area before attempting anything risky.
I think those Bloated Malanchor have a bugged and way too high damage output, especially if you compare them to anything else. The one before the arreat crater stuff also deal high damage, but those ones deal easily more than twice than that.
afaik the bloated malachors are bugged so that each attack of them hits twice. combine this with the higher dps that elites have anyway and the stacking damage with affixes like arcane enchanted or molten and they easily deal much more damage than any other mob type.
Came home drunk yesterday and decided to play. Turned the corner and BAM 3 suicidal ghouls coming at me. Instead of running like I should on Hardcore, I decided to kill it before it hit me. We all know how that worked out. Boo for courage juice, damn alcohol got me overconfident.

hell diablo I disconnected and reconnected 2+ min later I relog on and my friend I was on skype with said I was still in the game being hit by diablo despite being disconnected for over two minutes and relogging in. Luckily I was overgeared and lived. No idea why it didn't have my character leave the game.
Just lost two hc-chars within one hour... First was my lvl39 nm Wizard, ran into a yellow guy in Act II not realizing that he was Arcane Enchanted + Waller... I ran a defensive build but had no teleport = gg no re Second came my lvl25 DH, I died to Belial... on normal... Still no idea how it actually happened, I juked his attacks, but pretty much everything hit me. Ah well, another important experience made.^^
This isn't my death, but it just happened to me nonetheless
On Asia HC - where there are only at most 44 people playing at any time, and the Auction House is so limited in items its almost sad. There is only one 1h on AH that has 1k dps, and lvl60 items with vitality and all resist reach a total of 20 pages. ALL DEFENSIVE ITEMS.
On my road to 60 I met many other friends, in fact, us 4 met also during our own roads to 60. Considering the fact that Asia HC players are further split into Korean speakers and Chinese speakers, with English being a rather uncommon language, anyone who I can talk and connect to in HC instant becomes a friend. We feel instantly closer vs standard pubs who jabber away in Korean and we have no idea what they are saying, but even then, the HC community in Asia is so tiny we all feel obligated to watch each others back, and from time to time join a low difficulty mode (through friends) and help out the "little ones".
However, all these friends eventually died on our road to 60. for Every day when we joined pubs with other players someone would die. Death is common in HC, and each one hurts. For our friend group of about 10 people, it was down to 4 - 2 Barbs, 1 Wizard, 1 WD. The wizard was the longest HC friend Ive had since the time it took my Barb to 60, I had played with 2 of his wizards, one died at the level of 51 to some bullshit DC. I stopped leveling and helped him all the way back to 50 whenever I couldnt find a public game, since there really are very few players, and level restriction meant I had an even lower chance of finding a party in HC. The chat is separated by client language too, and since half, if not most the taiwanese players are in US, the players in Asia with Chinese clients are quite few too, and there is no one in the HC chat.
Back to my story. We finally got through Hell mode, destroyed Diablo with pumped up lvl60 gear bought from AH (decent for what is available), and decided to give inferno a try.
Started out Inferno A1 - decided to keep going until we got to the Blacksmith quest - Killing Mira. By rights, this should be the easiest part of the game ever, zombies dont really hit you, and porcupines are total pushovers too, but the biggest part is, no elites. At least, thats what we thought, and while half chatting, half playing, we dropped down the crater in the chapel, and ran into a fucking elite. Bat monster, Firechain, Mortar, Frozen, and something else insignificant as I recall, I was too busy running. Too many times in normal have I seen barbs get raped by firechain mobs, and I know how much that thing hurts in inferno when no one has any resist worth mentioning. I quickly typed "RUN RUN RUN RUN" knowing I couldnt tank it with no resists as a barb and since the beginning part after dropping down the crater is a tiny corridor - I knew the frozen orbs would rape us if we got caught up in it. At this time, my other barb friend had went to bed and didnt join in this encounter, so it was just us 3. The wizard and doctor decided to kite a bit while running back, and since all our damage was quite decent for the beginning of A1, 10-12k on WD, 18-20k on Wizard, 12k on me, the two of them did manage to drop the bosses hp a bit while I stunned and spammed Party Ignore Pain as best as I could when the orbs were going to blow.
We ran all the way back to the entrance of the crater, up the stairs into that very tiny platform, forgetting that after dropping down you cant return. The firechains were coming up and going to rape. Frozen orbs begin appear. Since I didnt attack, I led the fleeing party, and came to the realization that I had led them not just to a dead end, but the tiniest possible platform possible - the worst for frozen orbs. There wasnt even time to type. WD had burned his passive, saving himself from death, and running back the way we came in soul form, while I jumped down from the platform and switched on Ignore Pain hoping for the best. The wizard didnt come down. Teleport was on CD. He was jammed between 3 walls and 2 elite with firechain, and my Party Ignore Pain didnt reach him. I watched his HP disappear in a flash before I could say "shit".
I typed sorry (in Chinese) one character at a time while running away and spamming revenge, killing the final elites eventually. He was at loss with words, and first asked "Who led the way", and then came to the realization that it was the right way, but we just couldnt go back up after dropping down.
I had watch this guy die twice, and since I pretty much brought him up, it fucking hurt. The scarcity of characters in Asia HC makes it seem like a fucking apocalypse, and good players were hard to come by, so each death felt horrible. It was like losing a guy in your party of last surviving human beings.
The Witch Doctor and I took revenge in a very stupid way by continuing on and actually reaching Cain, killing the Purple boss, and killing Mira.
been disconnected, have not seen the "You have died" screen.
I hope I'll have more luck with my new DH.
Wow... Very unlucky, but at the rate of how many times Bnet crashes/disconnects, I'm not surprised.
I'm wondering as to how dedicated you are to keep playing HC, when 3 characters have died the same way already...
2 of the 3 are my fault (or rather my provider's), not Bnet. Still, it made me take a 3 week break off.
I've only lost 1 char so far, having got my 3rd to 60 (only 1 progressing in inferno though). 54 wizard died to a DC in A2 hell while kiting fire chains, molten + something pack of ghouls. Like yours, was a DC my end and not a problem with Bnet.
My death wasn't that bad, low level and at Skeleton King, but my buddy and I got it on video
It's his POV, I die offscreen while he's raging. We went onto the forums to find a million page thread of people who had experienced the exact same thing.
I was in act 1 nightmare with my tank wizard and had to go into warriors rest. I run in and start stomping everything. Little did I know that the boss was arcane enchanted. All of a sudden 7 arcane balls drop at my feet so naturally I walk away but like the guy above me, I rubberbanded and was immediately surrounded. I killed one of the minions and made it out of the surround to only be rubberbanded again. I used my potion but couldn't make it out of the hallway of death. RIP DudeManIII

By rights, this should be the easiest part of the game ever, zombies dont really hit you, and porcupines are total pushovers too, but the biggest part is, no elites. ouch, that really hurts. but that level is known as a notorious death trap. once you jump down, there is no way back, so no matter how bad the hypothetic boss down there is, you have to be able to take him on.

Known? I didnt know until now. Neither did the Wizard who has 4+ characters on normal that has cleared inferno (fricken glass cannon monk as main wtf)
Always remembered the entire beginning section (before you exit Northwest Gate, which is filled with elites) as a big "no elite" zone other than the yellow one down in somebodies home when you are off killing wretched mothers.
We simply decided to progress on util we can farm Mira + Dank Dungeon for early items since the AH is empty or too expensive (niether of us have past 500k, total of 6 ilvl63 shields with vit+allresist)

This reminds me of a situation with my HC wizard. My first foray into HC so I treated every single mob as a inferno hellspawn thing with several ToD abilities so naturally I pretty much never had to take a health potion, I barely ever took noticeable damage. In act 2 I encountered that baneling-fallen spawning purple boss in the oasis who stands in a dead end above a small pond. He spawned those suicide enemies in a rate which made it just a bit too frustrating for me to stay perfectly safe given the confidence I had gained so ofc I had to run up to him, with maniacs hot on my tail. What I didn't notice before getting myself cornered was just above-screen where I had been standing was a cute pack of elite decivers. They burrowed and all came up to me at the same time a maniac exploded, leaving me with around 5% HP left in a flash. I panicked and started mashing diamond skin that JUST came off cooldown before the other maniac could blow up. I survived. I shouldn't have, but I did and that was the most exhilarating gaming experience I've had in years.
Not a death story I know but that was a fucking miracle in my mind.
WOW wtf, since when was Shatterbone so imba in nightmare? wtf wtf wtf wtf wtf. It was like he was on steroids. Attacked faster than my 1.43 as barb and his gigantic swing was freakn fast. It was seriously easier in inferno zzzz
I was a young rookie Barb assisting the templar to subdue the betrayal of the Order: Jondar. I lacked one more last punch to finish him off when Blizzard DC'ed on me.
"Fine, I will run through and kill Jondar again"
When I logged in, they pronounced him dead and so I removed him to Hall of Fallen Heroes to remember his deeds.
Guys, just remember, when your character isnt responding for more than 2 seconds, quickly ctrl+shift+esc and terminate diablo 3, this will save your character from standing there doing nothing for a lot less time.
Took my slightly under-geared lvl 54 barb in to 'escape the crumbling vault' in hell mode. I had never done it before so I didn't know what to expect. I just saw a dude with an exclamation point so I clicked him. Stayed up for a while but I got frozen and mauled by ~4 champ packs while all my stuff was on cooldown. That was some horseshit.

Lvl51-55 When you just enter Hell is the most dangerous of times per-inferno. Your gear sucks in comparison to the current difficulty, you can gear up for it, and you arent used to the mobs yet X_X
Everyone who hits 51 and runs into inferno I tell them to be careful.
Personally I waited until lvl54, bought a new weapon and some upgrades from spamming NPCs on nightmare and hell before running in.
55 Monk, my first character past level 10 (for extra thrill, I wanted my first playthrough of the game to be on hardcore): I was just starting hell mode, after staying in nightmare extra long to make sure I'd survive hell. I was fighting some arcane enchanted elite when my internet cut out. Woops! >_<
55 Wizard: Again, stayed in nightmare extra long to make sure I could survive hell. I just got to hell mode The Butcher and was feeling very confidant because I had cut through everything easily. The butcher was giving me no problems so I popped archon form and used my archon blink to get in a good position to deal damage. He dragged me into a fire and I couldn't get out or cancel archon and use diamond skin before dying. I was too confidant =(
60 Demon Hunter: I had been farming act 1 inferno for about a week or two (this is after the drop rates were changed so I can get iLvl 63 in act 1), and was very confidant in my skills. So confidant that I decided to chase a treasure goblin through a pack of arcane enchanted wallers. It didn't end well. >_<

Like how less? Good tip. Thanks.
There is always a 10 seconds idle if you exit the game outside of town, even if you do this by killing the process, but if you disconnect and then kill the D3 process, the microsecond you reconnect will start this 10s countdown. I wouldn't recommend always exiting the game if you feel even the slightest lag, you might save yourself if you come back. It depends what situation you are in or how long the lagspike will last.

Yeah, like I said, more than two seconds, which is normally how long the slight lag spikes last (at least on Asia) But if you are experiencing a lot of lag spikes - relog, itll help.
For me if the lag lasts for more than 2 seconds I know itll be pointless, so I just quickly tell my friends Im stuck so they will watch me a bit while I kill the process.
If I dont do this, it can take up to a minute before the game boots me finally, so 10-15 seconds is much better than 70-130 seconds.

Ahaha. Well the problem is when I get interested in a character I don't really stop playing besides sleeping and going to class, and after playing for 5-10 hours straight it's really easy to just get sucked into a rampage that you forget how mortal you really are ._.;
Was playing in a group with 2 friends (monk and barb, me as dh). After farming a1 for a month we finally decided we had good enough gear to progress to diablo. A2 was easy, cleared in 5 hours without problems. A3 got very tedious, had to reset the game in the tower to cydaea several times because there were hard champions right at the start of the dungeon with no room to kite. After 10 or so attempts we finally made it to the last tower step, where the first thing we see is a bloodclan occultist champion pack (the guys who shield each other). We decided to split them so that one was seperated and couldnt get shields, unfortunately though they had illusionist so even a single one still managed to make illusions and get shields all the time. The fight went on for 5 minutes and i constantly had to dodge fireballs from illusions. I couldnt dodge all of them but they were only doing 5k dmg each (i had about 700 fireresi unbuffed, 1150 with warcry and monk aura). Suddenly one of the fireballs that i couldnt evade did 32k dmg and i died :| So annoying, i shouldnt have stayed there when i was constantly annoyed by the illusions. Also wasted all of our groups remaining gold on a new weapon on that day so we could progress a bit faster. Meh. Demon hunter sucks.
Me and my friend, lvl 57 barb and lvl 57 monk respectively, died in Vault of Assassin (Act 2 Hell) yesterday. I was chain CC-ed for 20 seconds by nightmarish and frozen. We first ran into blue snakes with fire chains, frozen, shielding. Tough, but not a problem. While running from frozen orbs, we went slightly into unexplored territory (like half a screen) and bumped into golden skeletal archers with nighmarish, invulnerable minions and waller. I took an arrow to the face which nightmarished me to walk into frozen orbs. The snakes proceeded to lay frozen orbs at my feet again and again and again. It took a good 20s or so for my character to die while being stabbed by 3 snakes and 4 skeleton. At no point could I regain control of my character (wrath of the berserker was on cooldown). My friend died 10s later when he ran into a dead end, ran out of spirit, got frozen and stabbed by snakes.
We had a good laugh and re-rolled. Back up to lvl 20 after a few hours. Better gear or more levels could not have saved me, I think. Lessons learned: never move into uncharted territory while fighting elites and try to have wotb on cooldown for every engagement, especially in dense areas like VotA. Easily the best fun I've had playing this game.
HC is no fun anymore , farm farm farm farm 800 all resists barb makes everything easy Back to SC2
Oh btw you can get to level 50 in about 8 hours if you spam farm act 3 scorpions, and level 60 in another 4-6 if you get a friend to jump start you in a3 hell scorpions until you can get gear to self run.
Best solo method would be to spam the A1 First quest where you kill the Wretched Mothers, then keep spamming it until you can do A3 Light the Fires easily with decent gear, then just spam kill scorpions in A3.
Other good parts to do would be Leorics Manor where theres like 30-ish monsters, but the elite spawn there has killed a lot of people I know.
Wretched Mother runs is UBER safe unless you like running down unknown dungeons (one has a guaranteed elite spawn with I think 100% mortar), and gives very decent exp early on.
A3 light the fire and scorpions can also be very safe if you simply kill the first wave of monsters/scorpions and leave/restart game, but if this is too spammy/boring for you for Light the Fire simply run all the way through till you finish the catapults, while for scorpions you can run all the way through until you kill Azmodan, but this takes almost 3-4 times longer to level vs simply killing scorpies.
Regarding gear-wise, 300-400 all resists makes you very safe regardless of character in A1 all the way through Leoric, which gives you plenty of decent farms. Avoid bad fights when you can (Frozen + arcane + jailer/vortex/waller + Molten/Poison/Desecrator in really small areas), do NOT be afraid of enraging the boss in A1, had it happen to me and it didnt do much damage. Always focus fire down one mob at a time when fighting elites (one of the blues/minions) as it reduces the damage done by enrage greatly (enrage damage stacks per monster still alive, so if you are down to only one mob the enrage will do almost no damage depending on your character)
Farming the quill rat elite early on in A1 Dank Cellar sounds good on paper, but in reality it doesnt give any good drops. The best method would be simply run a couple A3 hell until you are rich enough to stack (Main stat + all resists) from AH (should be very cheap since no vit), spam purple gems in sockets and maintain a 35000 + hp (I prefer 40000), 4000+ armor then simply suck it up and go out the north gate. Its a pretty big area, and mobs dont do that much damage (With decent gear zombies did 1500 damage to my barb, 2000 damage to wizard, but the wizard wasnt supposed to tank so its ok)

I was farming Crypt of the Ancients to powerlevel, good XP too.
Level 43 nightmare act 3 keep. Was taking on a large pack of mobs + elites (might have been a champ too i think I saw a yellow but not sure), had done it many times before with little problem, for some reason my health dropped a fair bit, and I got frozen down to 1.2k, i leaped out and piss bolted but got held up by those skeles that fall from the roof and path block, just enough for the elite to catch up wall me and then freeze me, had no where to turn with no health.
game was so boring, I ran into a pack of champion lacuni slashers towards the end of the alcarnus arc A2 inferno and they took me super low pretty fast and I had this flash of relief briefly across my mind. When I realized how unfun the game had become that I was relieved to die and only still playing by inertia, I just took my hands off the keyboard and didnt reach for leap or shieldwall or wrath.
back 2 topic : just as i maned up and started wearing a nice 2hander in Hell mode with my barb, some mobs decided that it was time to just steamlol me.

Hey, D3DB.com (another nice website) have scanned the "armory" for deaths in hc, and especially deaths in inferno. Here are top 10 reasons for deaths (and als how many of each)
1) Arcane Sentry (Monster Affix) - 969 deaths 2) Scavenger - 311 deaths 3) Belial, Lord of Lies - 308 deaths 4) Walking Corpse - 305 deaths 5) Skeleton - 190 deaths 6) Dark Cultist - 174 deaths 7) Risen - 146 deaths 8) Azmodan, Lord of Sin - 144 deaths 9) Dark Berserker - 130 deaths 10) Carrion Bat - 113 deaths
I've lost like 6 HC hero(barb, wiz,WD,monk) before reaching lvl 60 with a wizard. My hero is still alive and in inferno! So why I'm here!? Because the funny part is seeing the other dying while playing.. XD yes I'm a bastard.
We were 3 lvl 58, one 60, act 3 in hell. The 58 barbarian say that 5 days ago he reached lvl 59 with a wizard and died because of a lag. The barb lvl up to lvl 59 and after a couple minutes, says proudly he just need 6 more bar before lvl 60. 3 elite arrived on the big bridge, evey god damn affix are there(arcane, vortex...), the barb died in 3 seconds

i find it kinda hard to believe that scavengers, skeletons and risen and monsters like that account for the majority of deaths.

Scavengers are faaaaast when they are a champion pack so i am not at all surprised they are on that list.
Aaaggghhh. My 35 DH died in the Drowned Temple on NM. I cleared the uniques and went on to the room with the sword shard, clicked on it. Then I alt-tabbed because I somehow thought the quest was done and was gonna surf a bit. Alt-tab back, 10 cultists standing on my dead body. Magdha wins this time
Death list so far: -52 DH (fresh PC boot up, lag spike upon load, load into Graveyard Checkpoint with an elite there, dead when lag clears) -60(1) Barb (Waller/Jailer/Arcane/something Cultists, narrow hallway, never stood a chance) -60(8) Monk (Fast/Horde/something/something Magewraths, surrounded, couldnt fight my way out fast enough)
Currently playing a 60 (7) Monk who can easily farm A1-3 MP1, having a ton of fun collecting keys <3

Use pause!!
Have tried 2 wizards that failed.. Got one to level 48 unfortunately and grew a little attached (RIP Novice - I will keep your memoir for as long as D3 is installed on my machine)..
I think I stared in shock at the still screen of my demise for about 2 mins before I moved, SMASHED ALT-F4 because I knew I could have avoided it..
That said.. Screw it! I'm went Barb next - Back into it, now level 32 and steamrolling. (God Barbs feel OP imo)
Lesson here.. Do not play HC when you are tired.. Especially Keep Depths during Act III, those suicudal maniacs can catch you off guard!
But...
If you want to clear HC, do it in single player mode.. Whenever you notice a lag spike, hit ESC to pause the game.. Wait for everything on screen to freeze (ie: flames, character's/monsters standing animations will all freeze after a few secs). This indicates the end of your lag spike, you can now semi-safely un-pause and continue.. Just be ready for a second or three of insta catch-up.
I've had to deal with lag for a while due to minor problems on my end, at times I used to get up to about 20 secs of lag at a time, and this has been the most effective work around for me. (Now fixed and is GLORIOUS! but thats another story.)
Hope this helps other HCers teriffied of the lag beast.
I was a lvl35 monk doing act 4 normal on MP3 with lots of + exp because i was feeling good. Then i got against the key warden in act 4, he is so strong compared to the other bosses etc. He terrorized me, so i could not heal properly, then i got burned, so i ran away, saw my life get away slowly until a painful death of my poor Schisma occured.
I felt so betrayed after only playing 10h in hardcore. But today (day 1 after death), i have this strange feeling. I want to do it again :O
59 Monk with under 2 bars left to 60 grinding out the last few minutes in the Keep and I reach the Ghom checkpoint. Decently geared, I figure why not. Go in, hit and run to avoid the gas and then get glitched/stuck in a corner. Ghom puts his belly against mine and I am stuck. Right click to use Dashing Strike when I realized that I had changed it for Sweeping Winds for more DPS against him since I won't need an escape skill. Watch both HPs go down. I may have pulled it off if I hadn't burned my spirit on sweeping winds thinking I would dash out out the gas and stare in amazement at my stupidity. Had I left my escape skill or, even better, just reset the level one more time, I could have avoided the death. Just hit 60 with my monk last night after re-rolling and made sure to leave Ghom alone unless I had a group and stayed far away from the walls in his lair when we did fight him. Each death is always a minor learning experience and a huge facepalm due to hubris and/or stupidity.
53 Barb Act 1 Hell. Arcane waller reflective pack in a narrow space... First Hardcore death :/ I was one bar from 54 and I thought that I'd just finish that before engaging The Butcher...
Think that I am going to sit in a corner and cut myself for a while now :/
Not sure when this started, but apparently Diablo now automatically takes a screenshot of the moment of death?
60(6) DH on the day where they patched in the sentry buffs, so I tried them out, and yes, there really is no vault on that action bar. Click through for the full size verion.
When I got the game I played a WD to level ~15, switched to hardcore and never looked back.
I play self-found but I'm switching gear between characters. All characters were played to level 60 at least once. Let's see which deaths I can remember.
Level 60 Barb: Died in A3 hell when I pulled a double pack. Reason: Mostly overconfidence. Level ~53 Barb: Died in A2 hell when I had just loaded up D3 on a fresh day. 2 packs (mines WP...) and a lagging CPU. I recognized the danger of this combination but couldn't get away because of one Vortex enchantment. Level 60 DH: Died in A4 hell to a mortar elite. Reason: Fooled around with MP. A4 isn't the right place to be cocky.
I'm obsessed with the wizard which is the character I played the most, the character with which I cleared the first three difficulties for the first time and the character I now play more or less exlusively. Unfortunately I haven't been (alive) level 60 for a long time with her:
First Wizard (level 60): Died in A1 Inferno (MP1): Lost internet connection. Second Wizard (level 60): Died in A2 Inferno (MP0): Lacuni pack kinda stunned me to death. My shock pulses seem to trigger tons of lightnings. Third Wizard (level 60): Died on my first run in A1 Inferno (MP0) when I triggered the event on top of the hill in the festering woods. It's a tight area with enemies engaging and blocking the exits. Somehow I pulled a nasty pack of nasty ghosts. Fourth Wizard (level 58): Died in A3 hell: Lost internet connection. Fifth Wizard (level 47): A3 NM. Was bored for a few minutes and tried some stupid builds. Probably the first and last time that I will ever use Slow Time.
I had this para lvl 68 monk and thought it was invincible. My hubris made me follow a fireball from azmodan in mp2, joe could I be that stupid? I couldnt believe my eyes when I insta died! I also just died with a WW barb spinning trough a door in keeps 2 inferno and insta dying to 5 banelings :-)

Damn para 68 is tough ^^
I have a mate who lost a monk para 40+ to d/c last night too :/
The banes have killed 4 of my monks. Although I guess I'm only 36 or so by that time.
The first time I got to nightmare was with my second HC char (and I hadn't played SC at all at this point, only to the point where I unlocked HC). I got trapped in act 2 by jailor sentry elites and microwaved to death.
I've lost like 12 characters in HC. I've not managed to get a single one past Act I Hell. I have something against using the AH for items so I usually just end up dead.
i know it not technically a "death" but last night i rode the crest of a near death wave for far too long.
Got first HC Barb to Inferno Act 1, been grinding Act 1 for gear for a day, getting bored, so want to clear first few quests of Act 2. Join public game, everythings going ok, until i get hit by the first Elite squad. Didnt drop below half health, but im feeling uncomfortable with the amount of damage im taking. Say to my wizard random companion - Hey im not feeling confident, gonna go man. Replies! "Swweeeett!! Just found the timed vault man!" I have no idea what hes talking about - Ive played this game alot and never stumbled upon the timed vault. "Cool, What do you get?" "Ah man LOADS of shinies" I think - WTH, i can loot this vault and log out with my winnings. Not even really thinking about it, i click the entrance. Wiz - "Dude dont stop running, if you dont get out you die" WTF WTF WTF WTF!!!!!! Panic sets in hard. Wiz - "Also theres like 20 elites" Im running after this guy blindly hoping that his exaggeration is as bad as his risk assessment. Unforgettably his exaggeration is minor. He teleports through a pack of jailer/arcane/molten/eatyourface elites and i try to follow. The terror of running to what i thought was the exit, only to find a dead end, knowing you have to run through 3 mobs of elites, that you are under-geared for, while Wrath of the Berzerker is on cool down cannot be described in words. At this point i get cornered by 3-4 Mobs, and all brain functions have been reduced to "Hit The Keyboard!!! Hit it!! Move!! MOve!!!" I have no idea how i survived, honestly. Somehow i live, barely, and get to the exit. I get to the "treasure" room, to be greeted by some blues and maybe 3 golds (all terrible), my hands were shaking , i can feel beads of sweat rolling down my sides, my girlfriend is eyeing me with suspicion. But i lived. I LIVED!!!
RIP ReignOfPower 60(22) DH 600 allres 52k HP 120k dps
Died on a crater run to a yellow elite. Router crapped out for an unknown reason. Disconnected from the game. Came back to find my login screen on a regular character. Upon asking a barbarian that I was in the run with exactly how I died, he replied, "Arcane. LOTS of arcane."
The only thing I was scared to die to was a disconnect. Sure enough....
Not too keen on googling the answer, but would divine protection have saved you? Link the pre-nerf Tranquility (serenity) rune would be fun to play with.. Alas no real thought put into making group play more interesting by Blizz.

nah, it's pretty hard to die before hell difficulty. see ya in inferno.
DC'd on act 1 nightmare, for like 3 minutes. First time I've had a d/c in months. I was near like 2-3 zombies but apparently they can kill you in the time it takes to actually disconnect. My internet is usually rock solid, was a random fluke.
I've got a few HC deaths, but only two are really notable:
16 Barb - died to Shatterbone (or whoever that HP-check jackass is before Magda) 16 Barb - died to Shatterbone (looool) 52 Barb - died to Arcane Sentry in Act 1 on Hell (the other guy in my party just said "... fuck man... im sorry hey" wasnt even his fault, but the passion/empathy felt by other Hardcore players is quite intense hahaha. 59 WD - died to Hulking Phasebeast in Hell Act 3 - I got lazy/complacent and those are the MAIN mobs to not do so with. ^ this one was the weekend just gone haha
I'll hit 60 with a HC one day :S WD is on 33 now.
Edit: oh and a Level 20 barb that died due to a DC.
I've been DC'd/blue screened about 4 times prior to that and not died though... so I'm quite happy with the 4:1 ratio at the moment, when its been previously expressed as 100% dead due to a DC.
I got a video card BSOD during Belial, came back in about 15 minutes later due to having troubles restarting.
I have loved reading this thread and now I can contribute sadly ><. Just lost my 60(3) DH to a single baneling. This is only my second death in hardcore but what made it suck was I just came back to the game and dropped all 20 mil I had from my old barb into this character and die the dame day!
My other death was a 43 barb from dc so it wasn't too bad, this one hurt though.

Really and truly I just want the achievement for hardcore inferno diablo, so what is the cheapest character for me to obtain that? I generally would consider myself a good player but after that baneling episode idn lol.

Demon hunter gear is cheap, but if you're looking for something survivable, you can easily gear a witch doctor for a couple million.

I find the most dangerous time is when you've just come back from a long break, or are around a new patch when you're trying something different out. When you've been doing the same thing the same way for weeks, you know exactly what to be scared of, and what you can relax on - and I don't just mean you "know" that a mob is dangerous, but that you're instinctively playing differently around them.
Lost my first HC character today. Paragon 7, I'd just started act 3 after pretty much facerolling act 2 and feeling pretty confident. 25k dps, 800 all resist, 48k health. I was definitely getting hit harder but it was manageable. My internet drops minutes in though. There wasn't much around me at all when I dc'd and I was thinking I'd probably survive. No such luck though
The timing was pretty poor. I didn't get to gauge act 3 at all really, and I don't know if I would've survived if it was act 1-2 as I'd never dc'd before. I think I just won't be playing alone past act 1 anymore.
Got disconnected. I died to a bullshit electric eel. AN EEL.
ITS NOT EVEN A STANDARD MOB IN THE GAME. ITS ONE OF THOSE DUMB THROWAWAY MOBS IN THE SEWERS.
Yeah, one of my earlier characters (paragon 20) disconnected in Tower levels and died to a couple blazing ghouls that must have jumped up after the DC. Fun.
Of course my paragon 49 wiz also died to a 7 sec lag spike.

Im sorry for your loss, but still... thats an example of pure and utter idiocy. never ever leave the pc unless your hc char is in town. Lol, oh I know. But I wasn't that far in so I didn't feel too bad. I have a new HC Barb that is Paragon 5 now, about to tackle Act 4 (but still too scared to do so). =)

i was also mainly going for the hc inferno diablo achievement so i went with barb. only spent around 500k on this guy
i kept a shield and a loh amulet in my inventory for tough situations, but really on mp0 i hardly ever had to because the ignore pain from the axe procs pretty much nonstop

Witch Doctor is hands down the easiest HC class. Go for that.
Also I don't care if I die. Although it would suck to die with your backup or low level gear. Hardcore is about dying!
In fact I really enjoyed my last death on my "account found" p13 DH who just cleared Inferno: I wanted to test the damge on the proc of Andariel's Visage, stood among few mobs and concentrated really hard on the animation and possible damage numbers, ignoring my character's surrounding. A surrounding who happened to be a wall of fire.
I decided to try a HC run with a barb starting on MP10. Not the greatest idea for someone like myself who has never beaten Inferno act 1 in softcore even.
In any case, on the way to fight the skellie king, ran into a Unburied Jailer elite. Got Jailed and beat down hard and fast. Thankfully it was under 2 hours into the toon, and was going self found so no real loss of anything worthwhile. Was fun playing on MP10 with a level 1 toon, though I think from now on I'll stick with MP0. At least until I can get through inferno on my own.
Lost several D2LOD characters at level 85-95 duelling. Worst was a mid-90s barb, absolutely decked out 1.09 ww build with probably 20-30 kills under his belt. Don't duel in hardcore folks

You won't die to dueling in hardcore so it's safe here ˆˆ
Just had my first legit death! Paragon 32 122k DPS Wizard bites the dust on a double frozen pack on MP7 in Vault of the Assassins. I teleported through a room that looked to be fine, but apparently there was a doodad in the middle of the room that blocked teleport, and I teleport derped into it. Frozen was laid all over my body as well as some arcane action, and my health went from full to anomaly proc to dead in about two seconds.
Was fun, no regrets! My first legitimate death being on MP7 due to bad luck and my own mistakes is completely acceptable, even with 300-400m in gear.
Still have my DH, so woohoo! Party on.
I tried to teleport through that little thing to the left of the center where my dead body was. As soon as I saw myself fail to teleport and get frozen, I knew it was over, as you can see where I typed "SHIT"

Paragon 32/MP 7? That is much much more than acceptable. What level is your DH?

Gah! I probably have the most stupid HC death so far.
So after waiting for some stuff to sell in the AH on my SC DH I get bored and decide to play on my HC DH. I buy him some new vit gear (>7000HP at lvl 36) because I'm playing on shitty internet. I run into a crypt and then get scared, run back and try to exit. Too bad it's 5AM and today is when blizzard is resetting the servers.
Wizard p11: Router lost connection with ISP. Monk p17: So Tempest rush sometimes lagports the player or at least in my case disconnects me from the server. What I didn't know is that you can die when the later one happens... I survived all the other times and this time it got me even though the situations seemed harmless and I reconnected within seconds. I never stop learning.
last time my wiz died (clvl ~54) was in a public game (of course), end of act 1 hell, imprisoned angel. when freeing tyrael i suddenly just lost some health and the game froze, i couldn't use skills, drink, tp or even exit. only thing i could think of doing rather than shutting down client asap was run back up the stairs toward the chamber of suffering. just as i took the last turn, i got back-stabbed by an invisible cultist and died. that kind of pissed me off a tiny bit i must admit.
this also. google is messing with my head and i can't even be bothered to post the pic properly.

Check out the 1.08 patch notes:
Blizzard Players may now Teleport to any location within range, as long as a path is available

I should've waited for the patch to play. Lost my pl 13 wizard today worth 300+m due to shitty teleport. In fields of misery on mp4 looking for the keywarden, I just found him and two of the big trees were chasing me, so I went to teleport behind the two trees and take them down first, but due to a little down tree I teleported right on top a stack of poison pods, by the time I got out I had less than 10% life left, teleport came back up, I was able to teleport further away. Holy shit! I thought I might survive. Nope, a stray fireball from the keywarden hit me right in the back ending it all.
No, I had been using the arcane regen because it wasn't regenerating quite fast enough for my tastes once they did that fix. While using crystal shell my health usually never dropped from full so I thought I'd be ok without it, dat poison tho.
I've come to the conclusion that i can't play melee classes in any game, ever. Time to sell the +str skorn in my stash and make a wiz to try and use the triumvirate that i found.

Honestly i think losing a mid 50's hero is way worse than losing any level of paragon. At least when you have some p levels under your belt you most likely got some good farming in and hopefully made at least a little money if you didn't find anything good. Losing a mid 50's hero just feels like a massive waste of time

Exactly 60 could be pretty awful as well. Like you just hit 60 and spent a whole bunch of money upgrading your guy and such and then it dies before it can farm much. >_>

I'm just bad at melee, i need to kite things and have escapes based on reaction time. I run keep depths on my DH all the time and between SS and vault i've never been hit by a baneling the entire time i've been leveling that char. When i play melee I see mobs and i immediately use a gap closer, and in D3 the gap closer is also the escape so if i see one pack and jump in while there's another pack slightly off screen it's gg no re.
Level 56 Barbarian. Banelings in Act3. "Oh hey, I'm just going to walk over here and open this door." The banelings thought it'd be a good idea to sit on the other side. >.>
RIP 55 Monk to double boss pack in A2 Oasis Had a very safe build, and good amount of health, but damage was just too low (sub 3K). Have yet to make it past A2 in hell, might re-run A1 Hell until level 60 next build.

Uhrg that sounds like tough luck. Jumping in on packs probably wasn't the best idea though ;D I played "Furious Charge (Merciless Assault)" with my barb and it worked pretty well since you can clear white mobs fast too. Just have to watch out for waller elites with arcane/molten/desecrator etc., but on Hell difficulty it's doable (and you can dodge frozen too). Also WotB should always be ready to gtfo or survive long enough.
lvl 54 self found monk. was in cave of betrayer level 2 and ran into a horde molten jailer vile swarm. ended up getting jailed and surrounded and the molten incinerated me.

I just got killed on my lvl 60 para 5 because i was playing in a party and a partymember said he found a goblin.. actually he herded a huge mob of elites and champions and on inferno i instantly died.
told him it was a low blow and a douchebag thing to do but he said he reported me for harassment lol
really sucks though won't be playing hardcore anymore and certainly will never play softcore

A long time ago I saw a youtube video of a level 60 fully geared barbarian sitting in whimsyshire on Hell difficulty tanking a bunch of elites in a public game. Every person that joined clicked his banner and lost a level~50 char.
I wasn't even playing HC then but because of that one video, pubs are a no go.

I've learned the hard way not to get ahead of yourself. The second you start thinking about your character's future is when he/she becomes a thing of the past. Sorry for your loss
Looking at farming act 1 MP1 on my Plvl17 demon hunter because of the new patch, I go to Halls of Agony Level 2 waypoint, it's in a corner no big deal...
Walk about 1/2 a screen down, Waller, from one of those giant unburied monsters and i'm stuck at a point where i cant get near a wall to glitch the waller cast. And not too long ago they changed waller mobs to immediately cast a second waller spell after the first.
I can't get back to the waypoint and i have no room to kite so I have one option, go the other way deeper into the level or get my face slammed in. Thanks to the new patch, right around the corner are so many monsters that I can't move. I make one last attempt to get to the waypoint and I accept my fate.
Thankfully on my last farming run I found a 950dps crossbow with socket and -18 level requirement. Gotta get to level 42 so i can start vaporizing mobs again.
All 5 of my barbarians ate a server crash in the first 3 months of D3 release. Took a 9 month break and seeing if the servers are any better now, whoo!
The diablo 3 anniversary so far has not been good to me or my friends. My friend who had a DH 60(13) died yesterday due to d/c. Less than 24 hours later, my Barb 60(15) died cause i decided to alt tab (in a multiplayer game, so no esc pause) in an area i thought i had cleared while my party mate was in town. Alt tabbed back into game with my friend going "WTF" in party chat and the dead sign come up T_T.
I met Karma through reddit when he had just reached level 60 on his first hardcore character. He had a lot of game experience, having formerly had a top wizard in softcore and reached paragon 100, but he was fresh and excited about starting hardcore. He was always nervous he was going to die and excited to go on runs, but I knew he had potential, so I brought him into my regular group and we kept playing and helping him. He slowly built his way up to paragon 82 and 100k DPS with dual wield, and we all hoped that maybe, just maybe, he could make paragon 100 on his first hardcore character, which most cannot achieve.
Alas, he encountered the inevitable death that many hardcore players do. Karma disconnected and had tree poison spawned under him and and died about two seconds before he was removed from the game. As you can see in the video, his party unfortunately didn't notice him standing still until he came back on Mumble and called for help, by which time it was too late.
Karma always said he thought he would quit out of depression if his character died. He had even just spent all his gold on a new weapon and gem to put in it. At first, we could tell he was extremely sad, upset, and disappointed. Everyone on the mumble server immediately began offering him items, gold, and powerleveling to help him get back in shape. It was truly a community moment, and his spirits quickly rose and he has since reached level 60 after dying about 20 hours ago.
While it was sad to see a friend die, it's times like these where I actually come to appreciate the Hardcore experience. It was heartwarming to see everyone come together to support a friend in need, and it made me happy to see Karma ready to get back on his feet due to the overwhelming support after a tough loss. To me, that really embodies the spirit of Hardcore: We all play for the adventure, the good times, and the great people we meet along the way, and that is why despite numerous deaths, hours of gameplay, and billions of gold lost, I will always be a Hardcore player.
Level 59 Barbarian, Act 4 Hell, right after Izual.
I didn't have my WotB up and died to a Mallet Lord pack with Knockback,Vortex and Desecrator. I tried to fight but kept getting knockbacked, vortexed, and as I was trying to run away and get a health globe, they pulled me again and killed me.
Way back in diablo 2, before the lord of destruction, people were racing to be the first level 99 character. Because of how exp tapered off, only diablo gave enough experience, so a team of Germans and a team of Russians would clear chaos sanctuary with an amazon + others, then the character GERBarb and RussBarb would join the game, kill diablo, leave and join the next one.
I decided to parody that in hardcore. Now what country would be most appropriate for such a glorious venture?
Enter FINBarb. Because it's the place I want to be.
Most games I joined, I would tell people, Hello, I'm FINBarb, from Finland, and I will be the first hardcore level 99 character. Most people were respectful and would wish me good luck, as I courageously set out on my unlikely journey.
I learned the craft of hardcore from a friend of mine who was a nethack player, so the mentality is to do everything safely. If you lag, you should have enough hp survive. Don't take risks. It's a marathon, not a sprint.
Until one day. I'm peacefully farming and leveling, because Finland and the hardcore community depends on me. Then out of the blue, the dreaded red icon appears and the evil horn blows. I get pked. Was it a random act of violence? Then the guy runs around my screen, using the text command to display a message over his head.

Just lost my first hardcore character at lvl 52. Killed hedrig's wife in act 1 and go to run across the bridge and i see a molten desecrator extra life. No problem i told myself, i've been doing really well up to this point. Monsters so far haven't even been able to outdamage my life regen.
So i go running toward it and the map stops loading, nothings moving. I immediately log off and back on and.......dead.
Hardcore was really really fun for me, mostly because i could recognize that the economy hadn't gone completely to shit. But this left a super sour taste in my mouth. I don't have it in me to play softcore where its not even 10k for a stormshield, but if you want anything even half decent its hundreds of millions. Another 20 hours to solo a barb up just is making me cringe. /sad. If anybody wants to help me power level-ish. That'd be awesome. Thanks for turning me on to hardcore.

I do powerleveling quite often, if I have room I'll let you tag along for free, although I highly recommend against powerleveling if you aren't familiar with the game because from all my runs only people who are truly new to the game die; ones who are unaware of just the basics such as hp needed for each difficulty raises a red flag and they usually end up making fatal mistakes that shouldn't happen. Anyways if you are interested and want to give it a shot add carmon#1825.
Lost the first hardcore i ever made character today. Lovely 53 wizard. Got surrounded by a whole mess of extra fast vortex scavengers in act 1 hell and just couldn't escape. RIP, she will be missed.
Leveling a wtichdocotr now and enjoying her just as much as i enjoyed my wizard. Hopefully the witchdoctor will live longer than my ill-fated wizard.

I'm sure I'm not the only one, but as a HC wizard I absolutely hate elite scavengers. Haven't lost one to them yet but 80% of my close calls involved a pack of scavengers.
I have been playing on my first HardCore playthrough on my Demon Hunter MP7... Currently in Act II with level 18, I actually think extra MP gives me an advantage as I level up faster and get better gear... but we will see how the end of Act II will go as I dont main DH and never done Azgalon on DH... Q.Q
If your first hc playthrough is a dh on mp7 you're gonna have a bad time.
There is no reason to play on such a high mp your first time through, besides flexing your epeen, as you will literally lvl faster on a lower mp because you kill things that much faster.
I am pretty much flexing epeen/enjoying the slow pace of it as I stream and chill with friends on TeamSpeak. Its more of a personal challenge than anything else and I am sort of kind of excited to die eventually, I just hope it happens later than sooner.
Me, entering hell/butcher run, only one player, the flag is showing that he is fighitng an elite. From the portrait I see that this person is in Whimsyshire. So I'm waiting a minute or two until he ends. He did not. Yeah. The red flag is constantly on his character. So imagine this dialog:
Me: Is it clear? Him: Not yet. Me: No no, is it safe to go? Him: Not really I think. But you can use the road.
What would you think, right? He clearly says enter through the portal, not by his flag/teleport on him. So I enter through the stage rainbow portal and this happens:
The fucker is waiting, DOING NOTHING. He just stands there. I mean, is that a dick move or what?
Sucks, its not your fault, it seems like griefing is seeing a resurgence again, but you should have been more than suspicious when he was fighting an elite for 2+ minutes AND was able to type to you while doing so. I'd offer some money or powerlvling, but I assume you're on eu. But lesson learned trust no one.

lost my p51 monk this morning kinda glad i didnt lose him to a disconnect or bug or whatever but still =/ meh whatever
anyway i learned something: the keywarden in act 2 can instagib you if you engage from the wrong side. he always has the mortar ability and throws fireballs towards you. if you have 0 room behind you all of the mortar balls will hit you and deal massive damage. i teleported with thunderfists to him and i was next to him at the edge of the map. didnt have my fingers on the keys and couldnt react in time but i dont know if i would have realized soon enough that my hp ball is dropping. nothing would have saved me im afraid. anyway if you gonna farm keys in act 2 dont die the way i did
Was it the mortar thing or did you drop a bell and it reflected back? I've hurt myself (and my teammates) pretty severely a handful of times when the kw reflected a bell or two.

imho the act1 keywarden is much more scary. imagine you have a tough bull pack that you are kiting and some trees following you, and then you suddenly run into the KW who jails you or knockbacks you into tree poison..... can be much more nasty than pretty much anything else. imho a hc char should be able to take one full round of mortar shots without dropping below half health, else he isnt geared up enough for the current act/zone/mp.
Was pretty confident I could take down Inferno Belial Solo and was mostly correct, except when the meteors started coming... well mistakes were made, and my P13 Wizard is now dead, and my goal of solo clearing Inferno is delayed a bit. But I will be back (eventually) and Stronger than before.
It had seemed like an eternity since she had been that lowly amateur, beginning the fight against darkness. Foolish girl, trying to fight the armies alone. Frail magics and magical items at the start, but with a plan so ambitious that would shake the world. If only she could reach the Sorceress of the 99th degree, honing her melee skills and planning on items heard of in legends, she would be the greatest that ever lived, able to take on Hell itself on her own with ease. Evil Beware indeed. Not once improving her strength, not honing her endurance or ability to cast... not for the first years.
In a stroke of luck, early in her hunt in the den, she had found the Gull Dagger. It may have not been much of a weapon, but she had used it to finish off enemies, as it seemed to double her luck in finding magical items. Things were looking good... and the affinity for blades would stay with her throughout her life. She had thought herself the Bloodthirsty Guardian in her dreams, and set her wishes accordingly.
It had seemed like forever, until she had managed to defeat Andariel, in a prolonged and bloody fight, returning back to camp again and agan, slaying hordes of minions... and through it all, running, repositioning, weaving out of trouble. That had become a cornerstone of her battle technique. She knew that for a long time, her strength would not be enough to meet the challenges. She had the ability to teleport out of trouble and single out opponents before long, and with her Enchanted weapons, aid from mercenaries, clever trading, and odd alliances Duriel, Mephisto and Diablo were quick to fall.
Things were going according to plan. It had seemed like a dream, destroying Baal for the first time, and returning to do it all again in a nightmare world. It had gotten tricky, some allies treasonous ways had brought her closer to death than the minions of evil ever could. But by then, she had a group of allies she would travel with on many occasions, and the minions of evil would have been wiser to flee than face them. Her creed had become never go without support, for any reason. They had each other's back, and eventually had plunged into Hell itself, plundering the riches available with an odd combination of a Sorceresses, Necromancer, Druid, Paladins and Assassin, not all together at once, but whenever possible together.
She had gained their respect and tolerance of frailty when she had shared her dream of the foolhardy build, so risky that even few immortals had dared take this path. She had seen friends fall never to rise again once to many times, but never one of the rag-tag group of adventurers that had become the bane of all evil. Not until another sorceress had frozen in the midst of battle, dropping her weapon for a precious few seconds; in her arrogance she had split far away from the group before the frantic teleports of her allies could reach her. We had cleared up the area, and gave moments to honor the dead. She would be missed, Guardian Sv3etB0ibI3z, hero of the land.
After chatting with her spirit for a few minutes, learning that she would soon be reincarnated, they carried on. She had promised herself again: never go without support, for any reason. Random stragglers would join with them, but usually their arrogance or treachery would have found them wanting. Few would live up to such lofty standards of the band of heroes. Their numbers had thinned, reincarnations groomed and aided, and the circle of friends had risen to near twelve. There were a few close calls, but teamwork would help fight off the bouts of the accursed lag-spikes, a curse upon the domain that would strike people at random, always in the least opportune of times.
She could clear out chambers of Baal's minions in hell alone with laughable ease. Her items and skills now working in harmony, she had become a killing machine, the hard work the team had put in for all these years had finally payed off. Her auras and skill set allowed her to teleport around untouched as enemies around her fell, as she closed in on the important targets and sliced them to ribbons. Attacks on her were all but futile; evaded or blocked, shielded or swallowed by her expanded mental capabilities. Few enemies could dream of standing against her toe-to-toe, and for those, her friends would catch up and pick them off. She had become death, destroyer of worlds.
It was at her 92nd level of skill when it happened. The dream she had set out, to reach the 99th degree of Sorcery just in her grasp. Another raid on the Cow King's realm, and all was going according to plan. She had thinned out the herd, so to speak, with ease. Teleporting around and then attacking with vicious resolve, the trademark of her fighting style. Her allies were for the most part back in town, healing up, giving items to adorable mules. And then she broke her cardinal rule. The voice of herself screamed at her, never go without support, for any reason, but her arrogance... She could honestly say she was one of the most powerful in the realm, enough to beat anyone and anything in a fair fight.
Just as she had went in foolhardily to slash a group of straggling minions far away from her allies or any portals, like so many times before, it happened. The lag-spike curse, only a very bad one. It had lasted seconds. When she got out of the daze, she was stunned by hit after hit, near death. The shouts of her allies all reached her at once, as blood rushed back to her limbs. She had managed to block and avoid nearly everything, ready on to teleport away. She saw her allies coming with haste, moving as fast as they could.
Time seemed to stand still. She remembered everything. All the self-imposed hardships. The foolish risks. Learning from each mistake. The friendships, the treacheries, the rise to power and finally, the ascension into being a goddess of the battlefield like none had ever known before. She knew it was coming. The Cow King himself hit down with a thunderous blow, his mooing mocking her.
She fell to the ground, for the last time.
So close.
So what? She thought before her death. It had not been the goal after all. Her friends took the enemies away. Her spirit hanging over her corpse, as the team joined in for a memorial. She told them to worry not, it had been a good run. She had told them she would not return. Not be reincarnated. Her mule would give out her remaining possessions to them, and then she would be uninstalled from the world. Instead of preaching, telling them not to follow in her footsteps, her spirit said the last thing she would:
Welp, this thread is about a story. It was about my first and only hardcore D2 character, after which I uninstalled the most addictive game of all times. I had went for the aura-stack / melee PvM build, a glass-cannon at best before level 70 or so, and an absolute monster at levels 85+. I still keep in contact with a couple of friends from that group, actually flew over to the wedding of one. It was a beautiful farewell to what I to this day consider the greatest game ever.
