Sorry for the noobness, but how did he put Hydra as a left click skill, and have 2 defensive skills on the skill bar?

You have to enable "Elective Mode" in the gameplay options (in game)

Hydra is pretty standard for bosses. It's the best skill you can have against them. Nonstop damage output while you run around avoiding stuff.

I would get Arcane Dynamo if I wasn't a lowly lvl 45 wizard I see your point, I didn't know Magic Missile had that much more range than Electrocute.

I recently learned how awesome poison hydra is. If you can keep the enemies to stay put, each poison pool will stack together and will tick each second. 1st attacks: 3x(base dmg)/tick, 2nd hydra attacks 6x(base dmg)/tick, 3rd hydra attacks 9x(base dmg) / hit etc. It's quite awesome, IF you can keep the enemy still/near same area.

What stats did you guys have on hell? I'm having massive trouble in Act 2, I've tried tons of different builds but regardless I keep dying over and over to rare packs.
Atm, I'm running with about 15k HP and 7-8k dps (with magic weapon). My skill build is basically diamond armor and split image to survive while I bomb the crap out of enemies with arcane orbs with obliteration. I feel like my damage is generally fine, but I die so ridiculously quickly to rare packs, especially if they have mortar and some form of CC as well.
I've tried to use healing blade focused builds (but my regen isn't close to enough) and teleport kiting (cooldown WAY too long, especially when you're up against extra fast enemies). Split image works really well for most situations, but especially mortar mobs destroy it since they can kill the illusions too quickly, and you constantly have to keep moving so you can't get any good damage in.
Should I start using a shield and try to get my HP higher?

I have a question for a higher level wizard than myself (level 44 now): Why do so many wizards on streams use teleport? As far as I can tell, that shit is terrible. You go like 5 feet, and if you don't take advantage of your wormhole fast enough, it's a total waste. Help me understand!

I'm level 46 right now. I use "fracture" rune, the one where you get 2 clones to help delay enemy.
But the real reason I use teleport is to get out of "traps" I get myself into. "Jailer" enemies, "waller" enemies, kiting myself into a corner and facing a massive enemy pack etc. Teleport is a lifesaver in those situations. And it's quite nice for dodging boss attacks.

So be faster? They use it because it's an awesome spell. Wormhole gives you 3-4 teleports... as far as I can tell, it's the escape mechanism with the most range in the game

How do you guys beat anything that you can't kite? I run into anything with "Fast" and I die because I can't run from it or do damage fast enough to kill it before I die.

Make clones to distract them?

That makes a lot of sense I suppose. Thus far, I've felt that diamond skin is far better in terms of surviving bad situations. Or just for going toe to toe with a huge group of mobs. But I suppose that getting surrounded by some champions/elites/minions would pretty much nullify diamond skin. Instead of dying in 3 seconds, you'll die in 5. I dunno. I just expected teleport to take me further away from the enemies than it does. So I can at least get off a few attacks before I'm once again running for my life.

If you use wormhole and spam it, it gets you very far away. Problem is, the cooldown is so long that you get to flee once, then you're screwed if you can't make something happen in that time.
Personally, I find teleport to be a great asset in most bossfights (though I like to use diamond skin as well), but I find it's quite easily countered by a lot of mobs which are too fast for teleport to make any difference.

I use both teleport AND diamond skin!

Should I start using a shield and try to get my HP higher? Vitality as a stat should be just as important as int unless you're doing some cheese spec on infernal. I was at 30k health on hell and now in infernal 32k. Images have 100% or 25% of your health with the other rune and it's AMAZING for tanking fast mobs. Not saying you'll survive everything, but out of all the players so far I've had the best survivability overall and can kite for ages. Also use arcane armor. Armor gives resistance to ALL damage, not just physical. In any case, it might just be a matter of patience. Make sure you have plenty of room to kite, and that you're not dpsing when one of your cds isn't up. Take diamond skin extra dmg rune btw too. I also use a shield and that makes arcane armor that much better. 800 more armor is like 4 slots outside of shield. Check out my build a few pages back.

Like a bus. I'll probably do dat when I get home from work this evening. No harm in trying. I'm in act 3 on nightmare so I have plenty of time to experiment before the shit hits the fan.

That's pretty much how I felt. Even if you do teleport away you can only get like 1 hit in before they catch up to you anyway. I prefer illusions so I can actually throw some spells at them and they relieve some pressure for your group if you run with other people. You need vitality though otherwise the illusions die pretty quick. If you don't have much hp, Take the extra health rune for the illusions.

Level 37 Wizard just arrived in Nightmare Act 2.
Currently using the following build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#UclYQO!cWX!baaZZa
Cast Blizzard, spam Lightning Blast and Arcane Orb, kite with Frost Nova and Teleport.
Lightning Blast is just amazing and with Prodigy it recharges Arcane Power within seconds. I'm not even sure if Astral Presence is necessary, but I liked to have it due to the high costs of Blizzard and Arcane Orb.
Works like a charm against everything but the most annoying elites and bosses.
For bosses I switch to something like this:
