That kind of concerns me, HBO always produces these incredible high budget series like Deadwood, Carnivale, Rome, etc and they pretty much kill them after a season or two because they cost too much to make. I hope they have it in their budget to make this show and the Ice and Fire series. If I had to guess this show would be the more popular of the two if they end only being able to afford one. Well considering they decided to pick up a 2nd season after only the 1st episode, I think this is a keeper.

Despite a reported budget of up to $50 million, the pilot's final budget came in at $18 million. Variety 08/10/10 and wikipedia. The actual boardwalk they had to rebuild was 5M$ by itself... (same sources)

It blows my mind how much better the shows are on showtime/HBO as well as the actors compared to the major networks.

Just look at the quality, symbolism, and complexity in the first episode of Sopranos and compare that to BW Empire. It's not even close to holding up. Then you have Tony Soprano, which was a brilliant and nuanced portrayal of a family man who just so happened to be a mobster. BW Empire meanwhile... Nucky seems exactly like how you'd imagine a gangster. No nuance, no intriguing social experiment, just a typical mobster, with a hoe for a housewife, some underling he's got a soft spot for, and a penchant for murder/ruthlessness. It's just so stereotypical right now. Jimmy is the brooding, ambitious youngster who isn't given a shot so he takes things into his own hands. Al Capone is typical two-bit thug, kinda stupid and flamboyant, but cunning in his own small way. I don't know. So far, there just hasn't been a character in the show that really knocks it out the park for me. I feel like I know what they're going to do and say before they even do it. A bit too much selling of the era and not enough real content IMO.

There's no deeper meaning at work. It's an entertaining show, don't get me wrong, but so far it has not come anywhere close to living up to the legacy of The Sopranos and The Wire. True Blood and BW Empire are fun and entertaining, but it worries me that HBO is losing a lot of its literary and socially philosophical edge with their most recent shows. Maybe it's just for the vote, but I think he actually does care.

In the pilot, who plays the entertainer guy (telling jokes about is 'homely' girlfriend or whatever, and later sings a song)? I'm sure I've seen him in something before and it's really bothering me because I can't pick it and I couldn't find him on imdb. It could just be someone else I'm thinking of but I can't confirm/deny until I at least find out who he is!
