No, this is not a joke/trolling thread. We don't need more filler posts asking if it is. Remember to spoiler season 6 content, and clearly label your spoilers.

There is the occasional reference that is put in that would not be familiar to younger viewers certainly, but I think its more just fun for the staff of the show to put them in than directed at anyone in particular (The Big Lebowski ponies come to mind)

+ Show Spoiler + The Big Lebowski ponies, coming in Season 2, could be either to parents or bronies. Or a creator of the show is simply a fan. + Show Spoiler + The only thing the Brony community can truly claim is Ditzy Doo's name change. Virtually all of later season 1 and all of season 2 has nothing to do with our community. Though Discord = Q was utterly fantastic to us who watched TNG back in the day, but that coulda been for the parents, bronies, or simply a cool thing for the creators.

+ Show Spoiler + So here I'm a day late watching it due to work. So I look at the time its 10:15pm Sweet I can watch it and be to bed before 10:45. Well its midnight, and I finally turn off the tv.. wtf.. That song just killed me, "His girlfriend sure thinks so" I just died right there laughing. it was just so hilarious that I had to go back and rewatch and rewatch. Got addicted to it :D. Great episode, its one of the few that gave me that feeling that I got in season 1 ep's of watching MLP for the first time. Just grinned the whole time and had a blast, wouldn't give it up for anything.

Atleast thats how I've used it. Exactly. It's used as a justifying argument of "A reference to X proves this isn't a Kids' Show™, which means I'm allowed to watch it!", when the dynamics of audience appeal and engagement are far more complex than a black-and-white content threshold. All it comes across as is a kid tugging your sleeve while jumping up and down going "Look! Look! Adult Stuff™!" Trying to ride the "adult" parts means acknowledging the Kids'/Adult Show™ mindset, and a few references aren't gonna let you compete against whatever the other person has in mind for an Adult Show™. Our best bet here is in challenging the designations and breaking down the playing field into smaller axes. "What makes a kids' show?", essentially.

We need an experiment with an actual person in the target age range, get them to watch an episode and then explain how many of the character's feelings/intentions as well as jokes they understand. I have a feeling it would be nearly all of them except the direct references to films/TV they haven't watched yet, and those are too few to really call it intentional on the part of the director/writers to add those for adults.

Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that the fans do not determine whether this is a "kid's show that also appeals to the adults". I believe its the creator, as they attempt to create and to cater to an audience with whatever they do, AND we, the bronies coincidentally fully agree or enjoy what they have done. It is first and foremost a kid's show (as it is their intended audience). However the presentation and delivery and aspects of the show makes it appeal to a broader audience (such as not being unbearably stupid, realistic presentation of themes, a personal connection, or something to look up to as a role model.) The show for all intents and purposes is a children's show- but they put the effort, work, and time to make it much more than that. The creators made a phenomenon the likes of which nobody could have foretold or foreseen. And we are thankful for this.

If you open up a TV guide description, it still says Educational/Informative. Also, Ditzy Doo was never a name for Derpy at any point in time. The closest it ever got was Faust saying (paraphrased), "well I might use Ditzy Doo or I might use Derpy if we ever give her a name in the show, because we already said the name Ditzy Doo once when it referred to an off-screen pony at the time and kinda fits." All the show staff have used Derpy in interviews at every single occurence, including pre-season 2 and all assets with viewable names containing the pony have used Derpy. And Jayson Thiessen has said in interviews multiple times that most of the animation jokes are not written in but added by the animators themselves, while other jokes are put in because the staff want to have fun with the show and make something they like, not to please any kind of fanbase or audience.
