Hello TL! I'm RedEngi. I was recently discussing an idea with the fine folks over at /r/MLPLounge and was told to summarize my ideas here. There were a few Starcraft players over there, but hopefully we can get some more interest in this neck of the woods.
Premise
What I am interested in setting up is the MLP Star League, or the MSL. This league would not be just for competing against your fellow brony in the game we all know and love, but also for improving, having fun, meeting friends, and enjoying ourselves.
I have several ideas for the MSL that I could organize and run, as long as we got the number of participants necessary. I'll run through my ideas here.
* Monthly or Bi-Monthly MSL 1v1 Tournaments
Players would enter their names into a pool, and then would be randomly placed in a bracket against one another. Seeding could be determined by league, with higher seeded players getting byes. The tournament would be double elimination, mainly because it is supposed to fun, and some of us aren't the greatest at the game, and would like to get a chance to get more than one match in.
The tournament would consist of best-of-3 matches played out at each players convenience. The players would have one week to submit their results to an official tournament thread, and if possible submit their replays so that we could all watch or do some sort of silly casting.
The winner would receive some sort of small prize, maybe cash if people want to donate, or I could send out a plush or figure to the winner.
PS: 16 player tournaments would probably work best, but we could adjust for less or more
* Monthly 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 or Race Swap Tournies This would provide a more relaxed atmosphere, and follow the same format as the 1v1 tournament mentioned above.
* Weekend Events Each weekend, we could gather up participants to join in on some fun custom games or matches. Players not playing could shoutcast via skype or mumble, and we could just have an overall good time.
That is all I've got so far! If you have any interest, leave a comment and let me know what you think. I know there are already some events around here, but I would love to start something new!
We kinda already do something like this with BronyCraft. It doesn't happen as often as what you propose but I personally prefer it that way. Maybe you should talk to BioSC because he is the main guy who runs our tourneys. And it might be difficult to start given that we have no idea who you are, but hey; go for it.
That is a good way to mass produce fan art, but it certainly isn't what I would call well made. There are a TON of artistic styles being applied to ponies. I could probably list off hundreds (I am not exaggerating, actually I'm being extremely conservative) and hundreds of people that don't draw ponies the same way.
If you want to draw like the show or use vectors, then yea its 'easy' because the show was made to be like that. Flash uses symbols to animate, and if you can palette swap symbols to copy animations and character it allows for higher production quality when effort isn't being used to replicate characters manually.
Even then, its still relatively hard once you are aware of what it should look like. There's line control, anatomy (yes there are many specifics on pony anatomy), color and shading (yes there is shading, as seen by the fact that you made the farther two legs darker) which requires knowledge of color theory, recognizing emotions on faces, the list goes on.
All in all I'd like to say that making art is never easy. If it's easy you probably are not fully aware of what you are supposed to do. It doesn't matter what you draw the effort you put in is the quality you get.
I think Camail covered everything that needs to be said.
Not to discourage you, but a majority of pony fan-art goes beyond just simple shadings and vectors. I suggest you actually take a look at what the pony community often produces to get an idea of the level of quality that is out there (check out the OP under the fan art section if you want some starters). I do applaud you for trying, and I hope this is your first step into the wonderful world of art. Don't limit yourself to vectors if you are interested in doing fan-art. If you have no artistic ability, you can always learn (or so several of the artists around here always claim).
Well I'm gonna encourage you and say keep going! Vectoring is a great way to express a lot of fun ideas, and its the method that will most closely resemble show. Just have fun with it .
i didnt mean that this was the only way to make fanart sorry for not being clear
but i think its fun and i dont care if it doesnt look "up to standard" i hope ill get better at it and can make some impressive stuff once i become more experienced, but right now i just do it because its fun, so yeah plus it was my first time trying to create visual graphics that arent stick figures or smiley faces since 5th grade art class.
and i wouldnt say that making art is never easy. my rainbow dash is bad, sure, but id say if i tried to draw it by hand, it would be a lot harder for me, and look a LOT worse to you.
so i guess i shouldnt write a blog about what i did if nobody wants to hear about it
don't mind the critical-ness. We're all a bit critical here, it helps us learn :3. In any case, if you want to write a blog about it, then by all means. I already have one myself on the same exact topic some months ago lol. I'll read it, but its up to you if you wanna write it.
