EDIT: Just because you think it's good doesn't mean it is.

richard jenkins and bradley whitford stole every single scene they were in, they had such brilliant chemistry and humour.

If your ONLY SOLE reason is that you did not like the movie then you should not have made a broad sweeping statement without using words like opinion or view or feel. You could have said "I personally find this movie awful" or "This movie is awful imo" but you did not and instead just made a sweeping statement which is akin to "This sucks". He can say it's awful all he wants. The fact that he is making such a statement that is clearly not objective and not quantifiable means that it is opinion by default; thus he does not need to spell it out for you that it's his opinion. Quick English lesson: Prefacing opinionated statements with phrases such as "I believe...", "I think...", or "in my opinion..." is completely superfluous and is therefore bad writing. (What's fact and what's opinion? Statistics such as "93% of critics on RT enjoyed this movie" are facts. Whether or not a movie is good is opinion. It doesn't matter what movie it is. "Casablanca is a good movie" is not fact, it's opinion.)

"Casablanca is a good movie" is not fact, it's opinion.) "This movie sucks" and "I thought this movie sucks" are very different things depending on your writing style and who you talk to. There are times where I think, subjectively, a movie sucks; but objectively it can be considered good. A movie can have fantastic acting, great camera work, and have a plot you just don't like therefore you don't like the movie, but can still consider it a quality production (you can objectively determine horrible acting). Using "I thought" also makes you sound like less of a dick when addressing your opinions. "I" alone also works. Of course, using "I thought" and "in my opinion" for EVERY comment made is definitely overdoing it. I have had several English teachers in the past that have critiqued every writing technique imaginable and all of them would suggest a different way to write something; a lot of it comes down to taste. I enjoyed the movie, but didn't think it was as amazing as people have made it out. Should I have written it as “The movie was good, but it is not as amazing as people have made it out?” In my opinion the second comment comes out as more demeaning to people who enjoyed it. Oh wait, I used “in my opinion” it should now read “The second comment is more demeaning to people who enjoyed it”. Now it sounds like it’s a fact, instead of an opinion. But I have had an English teacher that says I should use “probably” or “could” in place of is, and teachers that have said do not use that! There is so much in writing that is solely personal taste. As for serious comments on the movie: I really did enjoy it, the scenes in the “office” where everyone was observing is what made the movie for me. At first I thought it was just going to be a generic horror movie, but the good reviews got me interested, glad I went to see it!

From what I got from reading reviews: + Show Spoiler + It's a movie about making horror movies and why we find these things so fun. The "Elder Gods" are the audience, the dicks in the control room are the directors, and the horror movie trope characters are horror movie trope characters. I thought it was quite insightful and worked out well.

Don't go in expecting a horror/slasher flick and you will enjoy yourself. If you want to be scared, go watch something else. If you want to be entertained, go see Cabin in the Woods. The writing/acting/directing are all great. The reason the trailer looks so typical B movie was to throw you off of what to expect. The characters are almost archetypes so at first glance you will think "man, this is so obvious" and then the jokes on you. Whedon has a ridiculously intelligent tongue-in-cheek writing style that isn't trying to be over intellectual, which is refreshing. Recently, film makers think if they use a super-heady subject matter in their plot that the movie is automatically intelligent and anyone who doesn't like it is too stupid to get it. Whedon has more respect for his audience than that. Without ruining plot : If you go in expecting a Joss Whedon film, you will be very happy. If you go in expecting a modern take on the classic slasher, you'll be paying attention to the wrong parts of the movie and hate it. It's sort of like Drive. If you went in hoping to see a Refn film, you were very satisfied. If you were looking to see the movie the trailer was cut to look like (Fast and the Furious) then you were waiting for the driving scenes and hated the majority of the film. TIA I really enjoyed Drag me to Hell and I am a big fan of the Raimi brother's work. I'm also a fan of classic horror movies that have an element of humor (Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play, Brain dead) and this didn't disappoint. If your favorite horror movies are the "Saw" and "Hostel" series, you will be disappointed. On April 14 2012 08:50 Praetorial wrote: I just read the Wikipedia summary. It looks like...bad. That's all I'll say. It starts as a horror movie then becomes ridiculous. If you base the movies you watch off of the Wikipedia summary, then you probably won't like this movie. There is more to a movie than the plot line. Like, most of the movie.

Maybe horror films won't suck and run into the millionth sequel anymore? What with this and the woman in black. Although they might just do remakes instead like The Thing. ew.
