So I did not see a post for this movie yet, but I saw an ad on someone's stream. It looked meh at first, but when I saw it is a Joss Whedon production, I became more interested and read more about it on the main site.
http://discoverthecabininthewoods.com/ Trailer
It looks really promising and came out today. Did anyone see it, or would anyone who has recommend it?
Plot:
+ Show Spoiler + 5 teens go out for a vacation to a remote cabin in the woods. the teens are somewhat stereotypes based on most horror movie stereo types, a jock, a nerd etc. however, it seems that their stereotypes feel somewhat forced in their interactions, and that there is something strange about their behavior.
eventually they start getting attacked and have to fight for their lives.
I wrote a basic outline of the plot spoiler free as far as i understand it above. I really liked Firefly, and haven't had much more exposure to Whedon productions, but I plan to see this one.
i think that the plot is supposed to be quite "original" and interesting, so just a big spoiler warning to people who might want to avoid finding out what the hype/surprise is (i wont be reading this thread)
Watch it. Recommended. I wont say much but me and my buddy nerd friend just watched it and we must say that we enjoyed ourselves.
Rated R for retarded!
But seriously, I've seen the preview for this sooo many times... Looks like your typical bad horror film. I'll keep checking the thread for someone to change my mind...
Edit: Wow, 93% on Rotten Tomatoes so far... + Show Spoiler +http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_cabin_in_the_woods/

I'm going to go see it this weekend maybe, and if not then definitely next weekend. I don't much like these types of movies but the trailer looked really intriguing, seems like a lot more than the typical "torture porn / human degradation" theme that has infested horror movies for the last 15 years.
Average in my opinion. Horror is weak, there is more comedy than horror.
Trailers make me want to vomit from how awful it looks but if these good reviews keep coming I'll probably end up seeing it.
I absolutely love horrormovies. Maybe something to check out.
I suppose the best advice I could give is to go in with no expectations. You guys should know that Whedon likes blending his genres so if you want straight up horror, you might leave disappointed. Its bit more multifaceted I guess.
I normally can't stand the disgusting gore in horror movies but this one has me intrigued :S
last horror movie I actually paid to go see in theaters was "Drag me to hell". granted, it was a comedy/horror, by the Raimi brothers, who made Army of Darkness, which is great. and Drag me to hell did not disappoint.
Some people in this thread said this is also more comedy than horror? I may have to go pay to watch this.
If someone's seen Drag me to Hell and The Cabin in the Woods, give some feedback? TIA
I just read the Wikipedia summary.
It looks like...bad. That's all I'll say. It starts as a horror movie then becomes ridiculous.
Watched the trailer, and thought it looked good. Will probably go to see it with a friend.
Saw it yesterday. Really enjoyed it. Check it.
I heard it was like Inception meets the original Scream where its a weird multilayered deconstruction of horror tropes.
just got back from seeing it. i definitely recommend it. i did not see the ending coming at all.
The trailer actually didn't thrill me at all. But some people around here actually saw it
Can you without spoilering tell why anybody should see it? Brilliant plot? Great script? Great acting? Originallity? Throw me a bone here
Saw it yesterday. Quite different from your standard gore-horror type movie. Recommend it!
Really enjoyed it. Funny and satisfying.
movies like this dont give up the goods on the first date, so dont you dare judge this by the trailer. all you see is the tip of the iceberg
Great movie and a really different approach to the genre. Highly recommend!!!
fantastic film, cannot recommend highly enough i would have killed to not have seen the trailer, going into this as blind as possible will make it sweeter the trailer by no means ruined the movie though
a lot of the stuff i've read really describes it well
"scooby doo meets cabin fever" "destroys the horror genre" "black comedy" (no, not tyler perry black comedies)
it was legitimately scary at some points, incredibly funny at some points, and very entertaining at ALL points. good shit, will see again in theater
I normally don't watch horror movies, but I've been really interested in them lately. Saw Joss was the director and got me hyped to see this movie! After all the good reviews I will definitely be seeing this movie. Just gotta find some friends who aren't pansies to go with me...
I hope they make more movies like this and less like Saw/Human Centipede... really refreshing. Recommended for nerds
Highly Highly reccomend this movie.
I really really wish they had marketed this a bit differently, because If I hadn't read all the positive reviews I would have passed it by. Increidbly well done/entertaining/mind-fuck of a movie that is well worth seeing.
This movie is great. Fantastic movie to see with friends. Highly recommend it. I can't even describe it.
Amazing movie. But I'm Whedon's bitch so I pretty much expected to love it.
For people wanting to know why it's good. It's just a great departure from your standard horror mobie. I'd say this is probably the funniest horror movie I've seen since Army of Darkness.
If that's not enticing enough for you then I don't know what would be.
This movie gave me a husbands bulge.
This movie was so good. Saw it twice actually. It's one of those movies that reshapes the genre. Cabin in the Woods does an amazing job at having you laughing, scared, and intrigued all at the same time. Super recommended!
I'm somewhat of a Whedon fanboy, but I dislike horror movies in general.
Left me surprisingly content. It was funny and point on in it's criticism on horror films.
if you just take the movie as a horror film then its the dumbest movie ive ever seen, but i believe thats the point really, gotta look at the humor in it i suppose. not a big fan though, just wasnt that entertained
Certainly one of the better movies I have seen in the recent years. Best served to someone who hasn't heard anything about it and expects it to be just another horror movie.
Great movie, the trailers really do not show what it's actually about Loved it
It was amazing.
The trailers are nothing like what the movie actually is. I can't tell you anything, literally anything, because it will spoil it. But you HAVE to see it.
It's not even close to a normal slasher flic.

Ya, I absolutely loved every minute of this movie. Me and a few friends saw it at it's last showing of the night and there was only about 5 other people watching it . The theater should have been full for such a good movie..

Day9 recommended it, so it's good :D
Had no idea what this movie was when my friends decided to go. From the start everything didn't feel quite right, being the most generic horror movie ever. And when I figured out WTF was going on it was so fucking ridiculous that I was still a bit unsure. One of the most fun movies I have ever seen. Was awesome. Going in totally blind (I almost always read a little bit about a movie before I see it) couldn't have worked out better this time.
I am surprised at all the positive reviews.
The trailer made it look like a typical B slasher horror movie.
+ Show Spoiler +I dismembered that zombie with a trowel. How have you been.
I just agree with most people. One of the best films i have seen this year. Its not a horror, nor is it a thriller. We couldn't think what genre it really is. Its own? Probably. All in all, a top film that will make you go "ahhhhhh, that explains alot"
+ Show Spoiler +Had a warm feeling when i guess the Director was Sigourney. Just when she talked to Dana and stoner guy i knew it was her.
This movie was, imo, awful.

So is your post. At least give us the reasons why you found it "awful".
There we go, just because you didnt like it doesnt mean the movie is awful.
For me, it was.
EDIT: Just because you think it's good doesn't mean it is.
One of the most original films I've seen in a long time. Really appreciated it as wasn't expecting much at all.
richard jenkins and bradley whitford stole every single scene they were in, they had such brilliant chemistry and humour.
If your ONLY SOLE reason is that you did not like the movie then you should not have made a broad sweeping statement without using words like opinion or view or feel. You could have said "I personally find this movie awful" or "This movie is awful imo" but you did not and instead just made a sweeping statement which is akin to "This sucks".
Wouldn't say I enjoyed it, but definitely worth watching. The critics aren't lying, this movie is really good.

He can say it's awful all he wants. The fact that he is making such a statement that is clearly not objective and not quantifiable means that it is opinion by default; thus he does not need to spell it out for you that it's his opinion.
Quick English lesson:
Prefacing opinionated statements with phrases such as "I believe...", "I think...", or "in my opinion..." is completely superfluous and is therefore bad writing. (What's fact and what's opinion? Statistics such as "93% of critics on RT enjoyed this movie" are facts. Whether or not a movie is good is opinion. It doesn't matter what movie it is. "Casablanca is a good movie" is not fact, it's opinion.)
Seeing as it got 91% by Rotten Tomatoes, one of the most critical movie-critic site out there, it has to be good...

"This movie sucks" and "I thought this movie sucks" are very different things depending on your writing style and who you talk to.
There are times where I think, subjectively, a movie sucks; but objectively it can be considered good. A movie can have fantastic acting, great camera work, and have a plot you just don't like therefore you don't like the movie, but can still consider it a quality production (you can objectively determine horrible acting). Using "I thought" also makes you sound like less of a dick when addressing your opinions. "I" alone also works. Of course, using "I thought" and "in my opinion" for EVERY comment made is definitely overdoing it. I have had several English teachers in the past that have critiqued every writing technique imaginable and all of them would suggest a different way to write something; a lot of it comes down to taste.
I enjoyed the movie, but didn't think it was as amazing as people have made it out.
Should I have written it as “The movie was good, but it is not as amazing as people have made it out?” In my opinion the second comment comes out as more demeaning to people who enjoyed it. Oh wait, I used “in my opinion” it should now read “The second comment is more demeaning to people who enjoyed it”. Now it sounds like it’s a fact, instead of an opinion. But I have had an English teacher that says I should use “probably” or “could” in place of is, and teachers that have said do not use that! There is so much in writing that is solely personal taste.
As for serious comments on the movie:
I really did enjoy it, the scenes in the “office” where everyone was observing is what made the movie for me. At first I thought it was just going to be a generic horror movie, but the good reviews got me interested, glad I went to see it!
I absolutely enjoyed this movie. I wouldn't say it was top 10 all time, but was definitely the best one I've seen in a year or two.
From what I got from reading reviews:
+ Show Spoiler +It's a movie about making horror movies and why we find these things so fun. The "Elder Gods" are the audience, the dicks in the control room are the directors, and the horror movie trope characters are horror movie trope characters. I thought it was quite insightful and worked out well.

Just saw this last night and both myself and my date (who has no idea who Joss Whedon is and had no expectations) loved it. Don't go in expecting a horror/slasher flick and you will enjoy yourself. If you want to be scared, go watch something else. If you want to be entertained, go see Cabin in the Woods. The writing/acting/directing are all great. The reason the trailer looks so typical B movie was to throw you off of what to expect. The characters are almost archetypes so at first glance you will think "man, this is so obvious" and then the jokes on you. Whedon has a ridiculously intelligent tongue-in-cheek writing style that isn't trying to be over intellectual, which is refreshing. Recently, film makers think if they use a super-heady subject matter in their plot that the movie is automatically intelligent and anyone who doesn't like it is too stupid to get it. Whedon has more respect for his audience than that.
Without ruining plot : If you go in expecting a Joss Whedon film, you will be very happy. If you go in expecting a modern take on the classic slasher, you'll be paying attention to the wrong parts of the movie and hate it. It's sort of like Drive. If you went in hoping to see a Refn film, you were very satisfied. If you were looking to see the movie the trailer was cut to look like (Fast and the Furious) then you were waiting for the driving scenes and hated the majority of the film.

I really enjoyed Drag me to Hell and I am a big fan of the Raimi brother's work. I'm also a fan of classic horror movies that have an element of humor (Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play, Brain dead) and this didn't disappoint. If your favorite horror movies are the "Saw" and "Hostel" series, you will be disappointed.

If you base the movies you watch off of the Wikipedia summary, then you probably won't like this movie. There is more to a movie than the plot line. Like, most of the movie.

Josh Whedon of Avengers? Judging by the title one would think it is a sequel to "Snakes on a Plane". I'll give this a try
Watched this movie last saturday. It is sooo awesome!!!! One of best movies I've seen in a while.
Ending rocks and second part of movie is overall great.
MUST SEE!!
Title's are getting worse and worse
I havn't seen the trailer but I've been given a general idea of what the film's about. It sounds like one of the few interesting horror films to come out in a long time. Maybe horror films won't suck and run into the millionth sequel anymore? What with this and the woman in black.
Although they might just do remakes instead like The Thing.
ew.

so true. why would you ruin a movie like Cabin by reading the wiki...

Hopefully the new kids on the block don't know Joss Whedon just from The Avengers though.

based on what the reviews say of the movie, i'm thinking that the trailers are awful on purpose
