Edit: On second inspection the actual guard does start too far from the grip, which would render it mostly useless, and more of a hazard for the person wielding O.o

Where that lightsaber guard is, you would either would get your hand cut off anyways or you try to defect it in the outerpart where you have no leverage and end up lopping your own hand off. Either way, that guard is marginally useful. Then again it's Star Wars. Nothing makes sense anyways.Fear, or to leverage opponents saber out of their hand. At least it looks a bit more practical than the Sith Inquisitor lightsaber from the Star Wars Rebels show. That thing goes dual blade, then it starts spinning.

Plus, it looks intimidating = Sith like this. Seeing the ships was amazing. The sound of the X-wings and Falcon is as good as it gets. I like the rush the scenes gave you. The storm trooper helmets looked good. I'm assuming the black guy is important to start the very first trailer with him. Sure he could just be a random stormtrooper reacting to a random event but I think it's more likely that he is a good guy gone undercover or one of the storylines is following an Imperial soldier. It was a little weird to see him jump up like that. Should have just started with the desert vista/droid. Also, BIG thing to note: It did not look overly sterile or clean like JJ's Star Trek Movies. That was a big fear of mine; that it would be too clean like the prequels. This looks to be a nice degree of grit/dirty.

Will need more than that to make a judgement. Abrams almost destroyed my faith in Star Trek I won't allow him to do the same to Star Wars. EDIT: To those saying it is a hilt are aware the Jedi were based off Samurai, inc including their swords.

Even katana and wakizashi have hand guards, just saying. Anything to make light saber fights more interesting and not people just waving light sticks at each other with no idea as to who is winning.

It has a hand guard but the tsuba is small compared to a hilt. Its also not used a heck of alot because you don't depend on it to hold an edge. Doesn't really matter on the usefulness of it though, light saber combat has been completely destroyed since everyone started spinning constantly.
