There was no doubt that Star Trek needed to be rebooted. With thousands of TV shows and movies, it would have been impossible to keep continuity. In this case, Abrams' made the right choice to free the new movie from all that convolution by starting afresh, but he didn't erase that history as he set the new continuity in an alternate universe. I don't think something so drastic is needed with Star Wars, since it's only 6 movies. Are all the miscellaneous expanded universe stuff, books, cartoons, games, etc, considered canon? I wouldn't be surprised if there's some distance from the old movies. That would be a good choice so that we get something new.

Hence I don't expect this new trilogy to go somewhere intellectually stimulating. But will I watch it? Heck yes, if only for the fun of it. Was Ep. 456 intellectually stimulating? Doesn't seem the kind of movie that turns you into a super-star philosopher. As opposed to say something like the Matrix, which provoked a pretty deep conversation among people.

You should be worried about the writer, not the director.

I can't help but to be a bit disappointed that it's not Del Toro or Bird but it could've been worse. He did a great job with Star Trek, I think he is a really good, if not extremely obvious choice, to take on Star Wars. Eh, I was little disappointed with Cloverfield as well but it definitely wasn't "horrible". Not the best creature feature around nor the worst.

I loved the new Trek and though I didn't watch lost I think Abrams is great choice for the movie (would have loved to see Joss Whedon direct it though) I am excited for the new ones and anyone who isn't is just saying that to be a part of the **I only like the original three cause I am a hipster nerd** club.

Saying I can't not look forward to the new ones is to be a little bit of an asshole. I'll take the title of hipster over asshole, really.

I'm kind of ambivalent about the choice; it has the possiblity to turn out well so that's something I guess.
