I think its basically supposed to be like Firefly (or Stargate or Lost), with ~6 crew members aboard a space ship , each with distinct personalities like........
the Serious, Reliable Chinese Guy who Fights with Swords
the Reasonable, Affable, Big Black Guy
the Super Cute 15 Year Old Gril who is Mysterious and has Dreams
the Commander/Captain Type who Pulls Things Together
etc
I watched the first 2.5 episodes (ongoing) and its SUUPER silly with unbelievably overthetop cliche characters and events . I mean, you're well into corny territory here.
By comparison , Firefly (and Stargate) were very down-to-earth and reasonable with their characterisations, dialogue and events.
However, unlike The Walking Dead season 1 , Dark Matter isn't actually STUPID so far. It looks like its managed to reign itself in from hitting that level and instead filled spaces where retard-level drama would usually be with comedy/a sense of humour instead.
So right now I am finding these super cliche characters pretty entertaining and they are successfully creating a spaceship motley crew that is managing to stay afloat !!!!!!!
Go check it out, I'm gonna keep watching and hopefully the direction of the show continues this fun way and doesn't get dumb
neither. it takes itself seriously, but also has comic relief . i think it uses the same formula as stargate and firefly, which take themselves seriously but had 1 or 2 comic relief characters . except Dark Matter is so insanely cliche and cheesy on top of it that is added entertainment for me i only watched 2.5 episodes so i've still got to see where the direction is going to settle
btw the comic relief character is the cowboy/military type one (like the captain was in stargate and the cowboy/military guy was in firefly , for example)
its like the guy interrupts two of them talking and says "Hey, we're meeting in the mess hall!" "What for?" "Answers." *they both look at each other* *they all stride towards the screen*
like every fuckin scene is like that rofl
look i fuckin clipped it
also there are so many visual goofs its funny (he moves a door that he cant move by accident, you can see light and shadow moving between the doors of an airlock, the gun play...)
I've been enjoying it. Season 2 just started and I caught the first episode but not the second. It's not stellar, but it's the best true sci-fi we've had on TV since BSG and SG-1 ended.

The Expanse would like a word with you.
That being said, im watching Dark Matter, and even though it might not be exactly high quality - i still find myself watching and enjoying myself.

I've honestly never even heard of The Expanse. I'll take a look at it.
i love how they are just completely non bullshit sometimes, there was one moment where some drama was "going to happen" at the end of an episode and at the start of the next episode they completely skipped the boring retarded drama by just showing a 20 second "dream like" flashback of the event happening during the downtime rofl
there is just simply no bullshit. a character will outright shoot people in the face if they are a threat . there's no dicking around. you just dont get that in ANY other series , i mean its as close to Swan Song as you can get even in that regard (geoff shoot people in the face also). you're like , oh a new character , this actor looks interesting maybe its a new main character?-BAM shot in the head coz he was pissing someone off lol.
the show is just down to earth funny interesting realistic people . not these fake boring zero personality people doing fake boring things. they are all quirky and fun and have their own individual senses of humour
like this episode the annoying as fuck weedy guy refused to get in the cryopod incase the room catches on fire rofl
and before that the woman said she's going to dock the spaceship into the space station and hes on the main bridge (like startrek bridge) and starts looking around for a seatbelt ROFL
now the girl just said she's gonna go watch star wars 36 (the remastered version!) lol
and the "smuggler" type guy said him keeping the other guy's secret from them wasn't bad coz it wasn't his secret and he was only keeping it for blackmail lol.
and he fell asleep on the guy he was arguing with ROFL
the episodes are just filled with this shit
there is 1 thing that pissed me off coz it doesn't make any realistic sense imo and that is 1 of the characters validating itself towards another of the characters . i dont think the validation made any sense and was extremely pissed off about it coz that character was getting REKT and suddenly there was a turnaround that seems completely implausible to me. the situation is yet to be resolved tho so i still have my hopes ...sort of. anyway thats spoilerfree since i guess zero people have watched this show yet -_-
this show reminds me of one of my other FAV shows which is Gokukoku no bryndhyr , it has a similar "no bullshit" style where people act like normal people with their own sense of humour and funny shit happens like this girl can only eat cake if its blended in the blender but she cries coz her friend blended the cake rofl
look heres the OP for gokukoku, look at those tears its deliciously good T_T
ok i literally just realised Dark Matter is written and produced by the same guys who wrote and produced Stargate lol no wonder its funny

I recently watched The Expanse it is excellent.
Just started Dark Matter. Its enjoyable, but some of the writing is terrible. The Android is so inconsistent, using colloquialisms one minute and not understanding them the next :/ Still the story is very good.
I'm at the s02e03. It's not the show I cheer when it's out, more like good to have on a rainy day. It's nothing like firefly, and perhaps it's good they're trying something different/fresh. The characters grow on you in a good way. And that 15 year old is not fucking 15 year old rofl. She looks like a milf. But she is as annoying as a 15yo can be.
I will check out The Expanse, I'm very thirsty for scifi material now. I'm so fed up with everything being canceled after 1 season, I haven't been arsed to look this genre up anymore.
Picked Dark Matter up a few months ago and it just got too corny for me. May have to give it another go though as my sources of good entertainment are dwindling. And Netflix no longer carries BSG =(
Yeah this series is definitely super corny, but oh man I just can't fight it anyway... I love these characters.
Three: "Why would you use a sword in this day and age?" Four: "In close quarters I can cut a man's head off before he can even draw his pistol." *Three laughs at the absurdity of his justification* *Later in the episode Four cuts a dudes head off before he can finish drawing his pistol like its nothing.*
The series does a great job of making you fall in love with it even though its clear they have limitations in terms of budget, casting, and writing.
Didn't realize season 2 had started, can't wait to dig in!

how far did you get? eps 1-2 weren't that great but by the end of ep3 it dawned on me they were going for a comedic, fun style of direction and i just enjoyed it as that from then on
i'm up to date with the show now and i gotta tell you, if you want a show that has the balls to a) tell an original story, b) have bateless and funny characterisations and c) shoot people in the face time after time, watch this

Thank you TL, and more specifically FFGenerations, for already having a thread of a show I stumbled upon just a few days ago.
I have to say that I regard the characters as extremely cliché. They are so far apart from each other character wise that it's kinda funny. Also I like the abundance of cluelessness created by lost memories and a blander 7of9. Hope for some character development for her role. The crew turning out + Show Spoiler +
to be criminals
tickled my curiosity so I'm gonna continue watching. Also I wanna know what the ship knows about the young girl and whether it's holding back some information or not.
