It seemed to me that the captain of the 11th division at some point acquired the Kenpachi title and it's just been passed down because every succeeding captain has gained the position by beating the previous captain in battle, gaining both the division and the title. It's not like becoming the 11th captain makes you the Kenpachi, it's just coincidence and now tradition at this point. As for the Kenpachi we all know, wasn't he originally given that name independent of the whole strongest swordsman thing, and then when he reached Soul Society, realized there was a title also named Kenpachi so he wanted to claim it for himself? IIRC, Kenpachi started calling himself that after meeting Yachiru (not Unohana ), because of the weight it carried (being the shinigami who most enjoyed battle and who killed the most enemies gives one a pretty impressive reputation.)

If he indeed did "admire" Unohona, it makes a lot of sense all up though. SURPRISINGLY Kubo still has some good plot moves in him. I still shudder at Ichigo the quincyhumanshinigami though.

He named himself, but the Kenpachi title tradition was established a long time ago - http://bleach.wikia.com/wiki/Kenpachi_Kiganjō

Ofc just by mentioning Kenpachi (and making him stronger) the chapter wins the internets, big time. Soul King to be a chick IMO lol

And what with stolen bankais? I thought that would be a bigger deal than broken Tensa Zangetsu.

I think Kubo brought back the guy that wrote SS arc to finish his manga on a high note now.

I think the plot points in Bleach is coming around nicely, but Kubo is just really bad at putting them together. If the art of story is like playing a piece of music, this guy just plays as loud as he can all the time (power ups) or as soft as he can all the time (dialogues) and hopes for the best. The notes are there, but the interpretation just needs a bit of work. He's just really bad at putting together tension. Why else would people think it should have ended after the Aizen arc, when he had another full arc towards it? He didn't reveal enough information in the past about certain key factors that makes you think there are bigger factors in play and so everything just "comes out of nowhere" and makes you go "huh?". Hopefully whatever Kubo works on next will be much better because I'm kind of enjoying how things are being knitted together and making me more convinced it isn't just "making shit up as you go" a la Naruto, but a lot of it was planned from the start, but man, that just means he's a terrible story teller.
