How voluntary, and what exactly happened to him, and his past, is also a mystery. There does seem to be a fair bit of inconsistency. Apparently, Kuma was a king before he joined the revolutionaries... so this leads me to believe that he was stripped of hist title or something. Maybe defying the world nobles? So then he ended up with Dragon's squad. Here's the thing though - why did he become a Shichibukai? To infiltrate the government? And then why would he voluntarily become a cyborg? Was it a punishment? Was it some kind of negotiation tactic like "if I do this you do this"? But here's the thing... why would he THEN accept to be mind-wiped and be thrown out of the Shichibukai and become a simple slave to the World Nobles? There is so much weird shit going on with Kuma because it seems like he actively chose his fate when all he had to do was simply leave. Doesn't make all that much sense, IMO, so I hope Oda can explain it. vegapunk may be the key of all of this, didn't they share a special relationship or something like this ? can't remember

kuma's character is an enigma by design; his first meaningful interaction with the main plot he mercilessly overpowered the straw hats on a rampage for luffy's head, yet ultimately showed mercy
the second and last time we saw his character before he lost his free will (disregarding protecting the sunny), he saved the strawhat's from kizaru's wrath whilst sending them to places to level up, and willingly shared information with rayleigh despite technically being on the opposing team.
we'll probably know more once oda decides to share with the readers what dragon told ivankof

Kuma is the son of Bonney and Imm.

I feel like this should be the bit where one of us goes crazy and makes up an elaborate back story for Kuma based on a few scraps of information and tries to convince everyone he is right and I'm suprised that no one has yet.

there are some great theorycrafters out there tbh that have been right about certain things in the story. id be interested to see one guys theory on kuma

Here's my attempt: Kuma was a king of a country until something happened with the World Nobles and he decided to rebel against them and abdicated the throne. He joined the revolutionaries for a while. The WG got a hold of someone related to Kuma and used them as a hostage to get Kuma to do what they wanted. He became a Shichibukai in name only but was really just an agent of the Gorosei, like CP0 or something. The WG eventually volunteered Kuma as a lab rat for the cyborg experiments on the condition that they would let the hostage go. Finally, when they created the Pacifistas, Kuma's use was deemed unnecessary so they gave him over to the World Nobles as an example to anyone else who would defy their rule.
I don't think the hostage was Bonney because she managed to escape. Rather I think it was her mother or daughter or something (depending on what Bonney's real age is).

Pacifistas are the wierdest thing is one piece. Like if you can make an autonomous giant robot shooting laser beams, why does it shoot from the mouth and hands and why does it have the exact same body shape and features of a person. Actually the fact that it is an autonomous robot that shoot laser beams is pretty wierd in itself.

Personally, I'm completely not in favor of future tech in One Piece because it violates the aesthetic and breaks too many things from a setting perspective. But alas, Oda loves mecha I suppose.

Kuma won't be dead because his paw paw fruit can remove intangible things from people's body like pain. He probably used his devil fruit to remove his soul/life force and Vegapunk created some way of storing it before finishing off the Pacifista transformation. You can tell that Vegapunk is sympathetic to Kuma's wishes because he let him go protect the Sunny during the timeskip. This is how Kuma will be eventually revived because very few people actually die in OP.
As for how Bonney and Kuma are directly connected I havent thought it out yet but I think the theories that she's his mom/daughter are pretty boring and lame

What about her being his lover? That's a hit spicier.

Maybe she is vegapunks daughter?

What if Bonney is Luffys mother?

"Queen Dowager" means a queen who has lost her husband. I think Conney is Kuma's wife and was forced to rule the Sorbet kingdom when Kuma left to become a pirate. After Kuma's failure as a pirate/revolutionary, Conney became Bonney to go try to rescue him. That's why Akainu wants her back, "When I heard that you had fled the government, a chill went down my spine". He wants her leading the Sorbet kingdom again as a puppet of the government.
Her heartbreak during Marineford wasn't about Whitebeard or Ace, it was about Kuma and what had happened to him. She said "It's all his fault!!! We must find him at once!! Off we go!! To the New World!!!". Now I'm thinking that person she is looking for is Vegapunk. She probably thinks that Vegapunk betrayed Kuma, but we suspect that he actually helped Kuma in some way.
My guess, Kuma through being a king got connected with the revolutionaries, probably Dragon himself, who opened his eyes to the reality. Kuma couldn't accept it, so went out to sea and left behind his kingdom with Conney in charge. When finding out about Kuma becoming a pirate, the world government gave him the choice between becoming a Shichibukai or having the Sorbet Kingdom destroyed. He chose to become a Shichibukai to save Sorbet Kingdom. They continued to pressure him and forced him to become Vegapunk's experiment. Vegapunk was finally able to make some sort of big breakthrough and that probably made Kuma expendable. So they gave him to the Celestial Dragons to make an example out of him to scare the other kings.

People haven't connected the dots about them being the same person?
