Crazy that people shit on the episodic nature of the first half. It's so adorablely awesome. I thought the early story stuff wasn't as good and some of the episodic stuff was really good. Not everything had the same hook but there was definitely some good stuff there. That being said, when the story starts kicking in it gets better imho.

The race is probably the highlight of the first half for me. Where it all fell apart was in the second half, when they started getting into the super serious plot. This stuff often seemed at odds with the rest of the series, and in general it was just an excuse to animate fight scenes. Frankly, the finale felt like it was meant for a series they never showed. I loved the second half, it was awesome. And i really don't get what you mean, they built the series slowly but surely up to exactly what the finale was. With the + Show Spoiler + restoration of magic as a whole through everyone's believing hearts

With the + Show Spoiler + restoration of magic as a whole through everyone's believing hearts + Show Spoiler + I basically don't like the show whenever they get serious. It actively detracts from what I enjoy about LWA, which is its charm and wonder. I hated everything that Croix brought to the show. Her mere existence leads to a bunch of Chariot brooding. The entire plan with negative emotions was obviously going to end up doing nothing for plot reasons. Chariot breathing in Wagandea's pollen is played up as some sort of catastrophic thing, but in the end it's literally irrelevant. Worst of all, the Chariot reveal is used for a cheap melodrama moment with Akko when it's been used as a running gag for the majority of the show. That in particular was really grating. And of course, there's also the human side of things. I don't really know what that particular subplot was supposed to accomplish. This resolution was also deeply unsatisfying: What really annoyed me about the finale was how they made it a group effort when the supporting cast was ignored for a good chunk of the show. IMO the show is at its best when the main trio works together and each get to show what they're capable of. The race and the festival both did a great job of this. The OVAs also did this well. When Akko is separated from the other two, or the other two are just along for the ride, the show is a lot less fun. But all in all, the finale was actually really good! It was well animated, had exciting action, and was very lighthearted in tone. Having to sit through all the hand-wringing and drama in the episodes leading up to it though? Not ideal for me. tl;dr - Axe Croix and focus more on group things, and I like the show a lot more.
