The guy does have SOME good points about why in modern times, the genre isn't as popular, but to blame its lack of popularity almost entirely on things like societal values/difficulty of production/etc isn't addressing the actual reason. The actual reason is that outside a handful gems (hello MJP), there is just a lack of quality in TV anime mecha now days. They almost all suck. Like Gundam IBO was a boring piece of shit. AGE sucked. They weren't unpopular because of how the anime landscape is now days. They were unpopular because they were shitty. And thats all it comes down to. And if Darling in the FranXX is the future of Mecha anime, maybe the genre should die, because god damn, FranXX sucks. Good thing FMP is returning and Gundam Build Fighters is a thing, so maybe we can get back to having some good shows again.

I thought this too but it's kind of circular logic. 'They suck because they suck' vs. 'They suck because societal values changed.' There are still half a dozen mech anime made per year but none of them could be described as masterpieces. Trying to pinpoint a reason on the relative drop in popularity and quality of mech anime could be considered a daunting task. While Gigguk's hypothesis of modern Japan being peaceful leading to mech anime getting worse could be considered one of the causes, this also raises the debate of correlation vs. causation and issues like what this state of reality really is. Why couldn't there be a single genius director or studio with passion and dedication who make another revolutionary anime with mechas? But then again would a single anime be able to fight against the meta trend that is isekai? Stay tuned next time to find out on the next episode of TLADT!

I am enjoying Franxx tho so I am a mecha pleb I guess *shrug* but if they pay off on all their world building the series should be quite good by the end of it. I'm also an Isekai guy so lool.

Western viewing habits tend to form around the conversation rather than the show. Mecha just need to meme more and they'll be fine :D

I guess Mecha just has a higher standard, given its history, I dunno lol On March 19 2018 17:18 Slaughter wrote: I think the last mecha series I enjoyed was Knights of Sidonia, and that was mostly just the manga (tho that shit ending though). Given Isekai's popularity, I'm surprised the video didn't do mention anything about Mecha not only inventing Idol Anime, but inventing Isekai anime lol On March 19 2018 16:36 ShurykaN wrote: I thought this too but it's kind of circular logic. I kind of feel like because Sunrise just doesn't know wtf they are doing now days. Look at the majority of Mecha they've made recently: Valvrave, Cross Ange, Buddy Complex, Gundam AGE, Gundam IBO. Even one I'm positive on, G-Reco, is not without its share of issues. Really I think there just needs to be a show that is good, with a good budget and a good amount of hype behind it. And unfortunately, the "bigger" names coming out recently have been able to nail maybe two out of three.

I didn't think I'll ever see Takagi actually make that face at all! wow. edit: I enjoyed buddy complex though the whole time thing had issues! As for the whole trend, even though I enjoyed FranXX at the start, I don't enjoy it as much. The mech aren't really interesting compared to the gundam ones. Macross also feels like it went downhill somewhat with the recent delta feeling worse than frontier.
