Supposedly, it's one of the only anime that rejects the childhood rule. Wish more did it for some variety. I said uncharacteristic because the show started with Mao being the cool relaxed one. She helped Kouchie get in a good close relationship with the girl he liked, gave lots of advice, got the group together etc... basically, she was the light in the darkness so to speak. Then, what does she do? She goes emo after dumping her bf because she couldn't stand to see Kouchie with another women.
Yes, it's possible for someone to have feelings for someone without realizing them (not common I think) or develop them but hers didn't seem like that. More along the lines of Kouchie isn't there for me as much anymore. She also never seemed to realize them until after Kouchie began heavily hanging out with Hoshino. For someone who was cool headed, the emo was uncharacteristic of her which is what I was pointing out. You can say she is confused because this is love and doesn't know what to do etc... she could've easily just dumped her bf and told Kouchie about it then made him decide with a clear mind, not the way she did it which obviously left a mark on him.
Then, Kouchie who obviously loved Hoshino suddenly had a change in heart once he heard her confession. He never saw her as anything than a close friend so it never crossed him mind before (from what I remember). Then, what does he do? as usual, he starts thinking about her every second of the day wondering what's wrong promoting Hoshino to wonder what's going on, to see him as troubled etc... and eventually he just breaks up with her. The whole 'even if you move away, I'll get a job to see you every week' etc... became meaningless. Yes, you can chuck it down to emotions but that proves my point. It doesn't make sense for him to drop things after expressing such strong emotions.
So, basically, Mao went emo, neither character showed any interest in each other and Kouchie dropped Hoshino within several episodes after hearing a confession. It's like, dude, this is the girl you've been dying to talk and be with and you've got there and it's obviously working well plus you seem to love it etc... so when another close friend tells you they have some feelings for you, you just quickly drop her? Also, Hoshino's reaction just doesn't scream realistic either though it's typical of such shows. After he cancels everything and goes extreme by saying that he won't ever see her again, she just agrees and walks off? At least have both of them fake some strong feelings and build things up, not have them turn around towards the last bit and suddenly drop her etc... Keep in mind I watched this months back so I don't remember every little thing that happened and may be wrong on more than one account.
Reminds me of True Tears though I've already ranted enough of that to TL so no point in doing more lol.

The best girl won. Wow can't believe this happened. The childhoodfriend rule is actually rejected.
Goddamn it she didn't turn into a stealing bitch even into the end. Shouldn't have expected that.
My complain :
(my personal complain)--> no catfights for a love triangle show
------------------------------------> Nothing almost happened in about a couple of episodes it was tedious to watch.
------------------------------------> They have more screen time of the Udon Association which is really uninteresting.
------------------------------------> This show has got to have one of the most annoying side characters ever.
------------------------------------> Characters are too nice (i think this a personal complain)
Overall it was ok. It was not that bad. Pretty boring sometimes but it also had some good scenes like the "final scene taping" where Mao-neechan and Kouchie did not follow the script and made there own lines lol. That was pretty cool.
Overall since i half enjoyed it and half didn't 7.5/10.
@bigfan : what are you talking about being uncharacteristic in this show ? there was no random 360 character flips ..

Is it possible that you just like Hoshino more for Kouchie ?
To be honest this is one of the best unforced character development in romance department. Althought I didn't like the show in general lol.
Everything was actually pretty natural. And bigfan that is how romance works. It actually made sense how Mao-neechan acted. At first a little awkward and then jealous but since he has a gf she can't do shit. So she stays away.
It would be unnatural if mao-neechan becomes a stealing bitch and started aiming for Kouchie even when Hoshino was still there. I would have wanted that but nope.

It's possible though allow me to elaborate.
You said "there was no random 360 character flips", guessing you meant 180 since 360 goes back to being the same way lol but anyways, Kouchie did and so did Mao to some degree. Mao was the calm coolheaded one, the one that thought things threw, gave advice etc... once she got jealous of his relationship (she knew what was going on, just had to see it apparently), she couldn't handle it and eventually dumped her bf and went emo. Yes, you're right that one does get confused etc... when it comes to love, it's natural. So basically, my point was, she did change 180 lol (to answer your first question).
Kouchie is the bigger one imo. Until the day she screamed that she liked him and kicked him out of her room, he never ever once saw her as anything more than a close friend. Think about it. Before he found out, he was just worried about her because she dumped her bf and he wasn't sure what was going on. That's a natural reaction but the fact that he goes from apparently having no feelings for her to dropping someone who he's loved for several years and swore to be there for particularly overnight screams unrealistic to me.
It's one thing if he was shown to have some feelings and once he heard her confess, they developed further but I don't recall him ever giving her any thought. Maybe once when he was saw her with her bf but I don't recall anything came out of it. He was focused on Hoshino and building a good relationship that the only time he started to pay actual attention to Mao was when she went emo. Her reaction was also unrealistic. She just pretty much gave in and allowed him to walk away. Not to say that he went the extreme route and decided that he didn't want to her anymore at all. I mean, no friends even?

Uhm no bigfan pretty sure they had just that awkward feelings when you know you feel in love with someone and start avoiding that is so normal. And they did not stop being friends.
I have no idea how you say they had a character flip bigfan. This show has probably the most realistic like shy romance by teenagers . Look at the pattern
They treat each other as siblings/bestfriends and not yet realizing that they like each other -------> then wannabe girlfriend comes along and one of them becomes a couple ------> then jealousy starts as one realizes that he/she is attracted to the other now that he/she sees him/her with another couple ----------> same cycle goes to the other as the jealous one tries to forget his/her feelings -------> then one of them breaks up as he/she realizes that he/she doesn't like the current gf/bf ----> then one or both starts dodging the other as they try to resolve the issue.
I have seen my friends experience this. lol
This is as normal as teenager process gets. Actually this show is probably one of the most natural when it comes to that. It's really maybe you just like the HoshinoxKouchie pairing better bigfan.
This is not really the matters that Mao-neechan is the cool type. She fell in love with the person she did not expect and she can't properly deal with it that's why she goes emo since kouchie HAS A GIRLFRIEND.
Even to be honest i was disappointed on how Mao-neechan handled things. I really wanted to see her break the norms and be a stealing bitch not a normal sort of rational teenager lol

hmm correct me if I'm wrong but it wasn't indicated anywhere that Kouchie really liked her. Only time was after she confessed and maybe the first time he saw her with her bf. It's quite possible that I think the Hoshino x Kouchie pairing is the better one which is why I'm against the Mao x Kouchie pairing. Even if we saw Mao had no flip (and I partly agree on that), I still think Kouchie was the one that had a bigger change for me. From what I remember, in a couple of episodes, he pretty much dumped Hoshino and got together with Mao when a couple of episodes prior, it looked like he didn't care much for that from Mao and saw her as a close friend. Again, going off memory here.
YOU ARE WRONG.. rofl why did you give me that opportunity bigfan ..
lets end the discussion i think we met the middle line .. lets just agree to disagree
