So, now that you're finally loved and got the guy and you're happy, you decide to throw that all away (well, I guess postpone might be a better phrasing) to go back with the family you despise and treats you horribly? I just... Nice going Taiga.
I'm actually pretty salty about how happy of an ending that should have been and then she just randomly leaves. I guess I probably should have seen it coming, joke's on me for being optimistic.
that's why I edited "throw away" to "postpone". Hey, Ryuuji, you know how it's taken us all this time to figure out we like each other, and all this drama, and how we've been together for like a week? Wanna go long-distance for the sake of my worthless family?

lol. I was thinking the same at first but thinking about it further, it was the smartest and best thing to do. She knew that Ryuuji would understand it as well. It was obvious it was going to happen based on the remarks she made about family when she saw Ryuuji's mom and her parents work on their own problems. Think of it this way: she realized she was being a bit unreasonable and wanted to make things up with her family. Despise her? Please refresh my mind since I think it was her father who was the one that ran away all the time. Her mother was the one who re-married (if I'm not mistaken) and only wanted her to be with them (Taiga didn't like it because she didn't feel close to her two new brother or something).
After she finally got to be with Ryuuji, she knew that he would wait for her as she fixed up her family problems and that their relationship will get even better from that point on. She'll also have her parents' (one of them at least) blessings if they want to get married. Yes, I wanted to see more Ryuji x Taiga moments as well and didn't like her picking up and leaving but that was also because I was bias and wanted things done a certain way. From a logical perspective she did a good thing and I wouldn't fault her for that if I were you

I said the family she despises, not that they despise her. + Show Spoiler +
Real talk: relationships aren't perfect, even and perhaps especially if you've been friends for a long time, so first off she has no idea if being with Ryuuji will work out at all, let alone after she decides to pack up and go long distance after the tiny amount of time they've actually been a couple.
Should she have had maybe a more forgiving outlook towards her family? I don't know, they've only ever treated her poorly time and time again, nothing has changed on their side - but, I can understand if, after seeing Ryuuji's family, she wants to give it another shot. Sure. Why not. Give it some time, move slowly, don't invest too much in case they do the same thing they've always done. But after spending all of her school years thinking she will never be loved, to finally be in love and find someone who loves her back, and immediately put that on the back pedal to move away and give the people who've let her down time and time again yet another chance to redeem themselves?
Hell no, there's something seriously flawed with that logic, that makes about as much sense as the entire plot to Patema Inverted.

For your real talk, yes, you're right, there's no reason to believe it could work out but at that point, both them are madly in love with each other as evidenced by their desire to get married. To them, they trust each other and they've spent enough time together to know it's going to work even if it has to go long distance for a bit. I'm pretty sure they kept texting each other after that, it just wasn't shown to us. You can argue that people change which you would be right about but in this case, it wasn't going to be the case. Also, keep in mind you are applying real life logic to anime logic lol. If we are to do so then we should consider all those violent situations and other stuff that happens that typically would be classified as odd, bizzare or criminal in nature in real life.
You're still not explaining how they treated her poorly. As I said, I don't remember exactly what happened but I know her father ran away at the end (and it seemed like a recurrent theme) so I can understand her hostility towards him and if she wants to stay away from him but I don't recall her mother doing anything big. I do recall her deciding to live on her own after her mother got remarried because she felt like a stranger in her mom's new home. Her mother went out to find her and bring her home then left like 10+ messages on her phone before she got really angry at her not answering. Please keep in mind that I'm not saying that her family is perfect and it's expected that there would be fights but to say that her family (her mother at least) shouldn't be given another chance is wrong imo. I don't see anything wrong with her deciding to give things another try with her mother. As I said, I think she did the right thing there and I support it. Btw, did you notice her age? She's not exactly an adult or anywhere near that. It's not really surprising that she might despise her family if there is a lot of disagreement.
I disagree, Patema Inverted's plot made almost 0 sense later on though it had the potential to be really interesting if done right. They just botched the story though I did like most of the characters and I enjoyed it despite the ending.

First part is pretty much a lie, no one ever "knows" their relationship is going to work out no matter how long they've been together or how compatible, and you can't just say "oh, I just won't change my beliefs or personality at all over a long period over time, then everything will be ok!", even trying to guarantee that has got to seem foolish. I would hope that Taiga and Ryuuji would get married and stay together, but neither I nor no one else can know that and neither would they. We're not fortune tellers, the future is pretty uncertain.
Applying real life reasoning like physics and science to fantasies is, sure, not gonna really work out, but that's why we have suspension of disbelief for the supernatural. You can't, however, use this to justify character interactions or behavior, especially in a romance show set in everyday life - people are people.
I'm not explaining how they treated her poorly because it was always only implied that she hated her home life - that's why she would rather live alone, even in terribly filthy circumstances like in the beginning of the show, than be with her family. We can see in the second to last episode that her mother doesn't really seem concerned with what Taiga thinks or cares about - all the phone messages were about was "COME HOME RIGHT NOW" and while she concedes that Taiga can do what she wants after like message seven or eight... it isn't the same as respecting what her daughter thinks (that being said I think it was perfectly in her right to be incredibly pissed, but mom doesn't even try talking it out, just one-sided yelling).
Bringing in her age doesn't matter, if anything it goes against your point since teenagers have a tendency to not think things through, which she clearly isn't doing.
I'm not saying her family shouldn't be given the chance. Are you even reading what I'm saying? I'm saying it was way too soon for Taiga to go crazy and leave for something that seems like having a tiny chance of succeeding given previous experiences, after just seizing hold of the happiness she had been seeking for so long. Is she "right" in giving forgiveness? Sure, and I think family relationships are important, but up and leaving a week after all the crazy drama settled down and her and Ryuuji are finally together is ridiculous, and seems more like a wild shot to try and be "deep" and emotional rather than a real ending.
Also you took my joke at Patema way too seriously. Eh!
edit: Yeah c'mon man stop replying to my prattle and watch bake.
To be fair, no matter how illogical the position, as long as they believed and acted as if their relationship was going to work out long term its basically the same thing. You also have to realize that they are teenagers, and teenagers aren't exactly known for their exemplary decision making.

Yes but even for teenagers that was just wack and made no sense. I'm the same age as them right now (I think? They were entering their senior year of high school at the very end, yes?) and it's just making me cringe, especially when the rest of the show was so enjoyable. :/

what they just did happens all the time IRL it's the classic "fuck the world lets live together"?
What happened is that they felt like the world is against them and they no one to run to but each other . That's why they tried to start a new life together. Since they thought they needed no one but each other.
It's actually sweet if you think about it . They have a "you complete me" feeling for each other and they treat one another as stress ball. Although what they did is illogical. Let's just think that they are 16-18 and people in that age can do stupid shit.

Problem here is you keep saying what "they" did. I'm angry at Taiga's decision to up and leave, otherwise them running away together was fine and very cutesy in a Romeo and Juliet kind of way.
But after that that Taiga decides to move for... reasons that don't make a lot of sense no matter what the lense. Luckily Ryuuji likes her enough to be ok with it and keep going, it'just that her decision was super annoying.
Oh well, I can unwind with Hanamonogatari. I'm stretching it out so it lasts longer. :/

But yes, Hanamonogatari is good so enjoy!
The backgrounds and imagery in Hana seem really well done even compared to other parts of the series, I'm loving every bit of it. Resisting urges to rematch Bake/s2/Neko/Nise. Must... resist....

Well, yes, of course to a degree. I believe the anime was trying to convey that they are really in love and trust each other to the point where they believe that. It's why Ryuuji decided to trust Taiga even though he was disappointed that she left that fast (should've talked to him face to face first imo). He understands that she has to fix things first and that she'll come back which is why we have her come back at the end and things went back to the way they were.
Well, yes, right. You can still use it to a degree and people are people. Just saying that in anime, things get overblown out of proportion. In anime, someone can be really oblivious at times, much more than real life or you get people getting clobbered by someone who likes them but that's never the case in real life. Just a small point I was trying to make. I'm sure I can find similar things in other anime too but for the sake of the argument, let's just ignore this point.
Again, keep in mind that she's a teenager. Though not all teenagers are the same, it's not really hard for me to believe that she got into constant arguments with her father and stepmother (dunno about what though) and left them as a result. All that means is that she saw her home life as terrible but we don't know whose's really to blame here. It could easily be her fault. Maybe her parents told her to help around the house and get a job but she didn't want to do that and eventually got tired of the constant arguments and left etc... But that's the problem. We have no clue what Taiga's done in the past to get her mom that irritated. For all we know, she was in the rebellious phase at some point or maybe something big went down but the show never explored her earlier life (now that I think about it, an ova would've been nice here ><; ).
Actually, I think it works perfectly lol. At the start of the show, she was immature, didn't think things through etc... but after going through so many experiences and seeing Ryuuji's family make up, she realized that maybe she needs to 'try again harder' and work out the differences. The whole school year was almost gone by that point so she matured slowly through the experiences to get to that point. She learned how to take care of herself (when she forced Ryuuji to focus on Minori), learned about love and how family relationships are important and by the end, she decided to use these experiences to better her life. Matured well even if a year course sounds a bit fast (it's quite reasonable imo) ^^
Yes, I'm reading what you're writing though your point may have escaped me there. That's the thing, how do you know it wasn't her fault that things weren't working out in the first place? Her mom came from wherever because she wanted to bring her back. She tried to bring her back, failed then gave up because she realized she wouldn't be able to unless Taiga accepts it. My problem is that it sounds like you think her family is 100% (I know you didn't say that but it just 'feels' like it) responsible for what's going on when it can easily be Taiga who's out of control or something. So in that sense, one week isn't that bad since she had to 'fix' herself to try and get things to work. Also, what if to her now, having her family 'support' her relationship with Ryuuji is also important. We can't really forget how impactful the whole end with Ryuuji's mom was. It was in the anime for a reason. You can say that it's too sudden but I think a week of thinking about things after seeing just how beneficial they can be (Ryuuji's family) can be enough. Also, not like she wasn't maturing as the show went on so even though the switch might've been fast, she had some good reasons for it.
Was it? LOL my bad XD Patema Inverted really had a messed up world, more so the structure of it. I still can't wrap my hand around how things were. At one point, it kinda made some sense but then once they floated away from that crazy guy into the clouds and landed at the other place, it slowly stopped making sense lol.
haha even if I want to, Toradora's discussions are fun stuff :D
