LOGH is probably still to this day the easiest 10/10 i've given. It should be watched at least for it's ambition. Space Opera of that length is one hell of a feat. It has it's flaws like any work but it has so many positives that it's hard to bring it down too much.

LOGH is probably still to this day the easiest 10/10 i've given. Its also hard for me to imagine that a remake could be as good. Plus they'll won't be able to get very far through the series, considering it will probably be only 1 to 2 seasons in length.

Just watched the 2nd episode of the Gabriel Dropout specials. That was a very unexpected episode, and quite good.

The sheer scale and quality of the plot and cast is something I've been looking for in an anime for a long time and while the show had some issues like monotone and akward directing at times it was amazing overall. Some more thoughts about the show: + Show Spoiler [LotGH] +-Maybe it's because I finished Season 4 (87-110) in less than a week but the pacing felt much faster compared to the other seasons. Episode 89's pacing in particular was absurdly fast, the first half was about Reinhard's PTSD over Westerland while the second half was Reinhard asking Hildegard to marry him like an akward teenager. The tonal whiplash was incredibly jarring.
-I feel a lot of the In-Universe hate towards Oberstein was unwarranted. His inaction during Westerland and his attitude in general is questionable but he had good reasons for them and, Kircheis aside, he was arguably the most loyal of Reinhard's admirals. For all the other admirals to badmouth him so much was very hypocritical (doubly so for Reuenthal and Bittenfelt).
-Episodes 98 & 99 were my favorites. Reuenthal giving Mittermeyer his firstborn child as his "parting gift" was so touching and heartwarming, one of the few times I've shed happy tears for an anime.
-It's a weird thing to say but I really liked Job Trunicht's character and would've loved to know more about him and how he became the man he was. There was something endearing about his scumbaggery and cynicism, he felt different from others like Lang who were treacherous out of greed and/or petty revenge. It's like something broke inside of him in the past and the Trunicht we saw was just a shadow if his former self. Rubinsky was similar but it was obvious that his goal was just to obtain more power while Trunicht never really made his intentions clear.
-I wonder how much of Attenborough's character was anime original. His role in the later seasons was not negligible so if most of it was anime original I have little hope for the remake since it's a re-adaptation of the novels.
+ Show Spoiler +The last arc is definitely more fast paced. I actually didn't mind. THe only thing I did mind about the arc is that it focused too much on actual villainy with the sect etc.
I think the in-universe hat towards Oberstein was warranted. I really disliked him for a long time, as well - for the same reasons characters like Mittermeyer disliked him. He is very pragmatic to the point where I would say you could describe the "philosophy" of his actions as machiavellian. However, that only becomes very apparent later, when you learn how loyal he actually is. Prior to that I thought he is playing his power games, even including the election of Reinhard to reach is ulterior motives. Turns out that wasn't the case. In the end, I really didn't like his person but loved him as a character. Definitely one of the strong points in the show and that says a lot considering its caliber.
I disliked Trunicht, he was quite annoying. I agree with Spazer on him.

How good are the side-stories (the 20+ episode long OVAs) compared to the main series?

Numy please... Since when have you become so cynical? :[

Leave me alone in my wonderful, ideal world.

I mean I'm only half joking about panty shots. Those are the bomb. Haven't watched anime since I moved down here. Started watching Xam'd again because of you. It really does share a lot with Eureka 7. Maybe I'll watch that afterwards but so far enjoying it again.

Lots of Kircheis in them. Most follow Reinhard, but one long one follows Yang, and its not very exciting. The Reinhard ones have stories like Reinhard and Kircheis' first mission, where they are commanding a Tank. Or Reinhard's first time commanding a ship, or his first time commanding a formation of ships. One of them has a pretty good subplot involving the Rosenritter, as well.
For the most part, its just nice to see all those old familiar faces, back when they were relatively unimportant, doing things you typically don't see in the main OVA (especially Ground Combat, which we almost never saw).

Yeah. They range from good to not great. But after the 110 episode ride, it's very... cathartic.
Edit: You could also watch Golden Wings to see what we truly fear from the remake.

Golden Wings.... *shudder*
What an abomination

Finally, Recreators is starting to get a bit more interesting. I want to see more clashes! A lot moreeeeeeeeee.

I think I mentioned that before but I checked anichart a bit ago and realized that ReCreators is 24 episodes and not just 12/13. I really didn't know but I guess we're going to get a more fleshed out story, or at least an attempt at that. While trying to copy urobutcher?

How is urobutcher involved anywhere here? Is it because the designs look like aldnoah zero? That's not a surprise since it's the same studio but the creator of this is the author of the black lagoon manga aka rei hiroe. If anything, this looks more like a Nasu than a urobuchi.

because + Show Spoiler +Madoka got stabbed in the stomach ... now that I think about it, that's probably the only bad thing that didn't actually happen though? It might have happened offscreen during the thousands of times Homura looped back in time

Mamika is precure based though.
Mfw you pick something that you know wasn't shown on screen.

come on, that DOES sound like something from him though. Not that it actually happened but it's totally his style

I think urobuchi hasn't written anything nilhistic or dark since like 3 years ago actually. Thunderbolt fantasy, concrete revolutio s2, first 3 eps of aldnoah zero, psycho pass movie, expelled from paradise, suisei no gargantia. I could hardly call those shows fitting for some guy nicknamed the butcher. Maybe Kamen rider gaim might be the only thing.

+ Show Spoiler [Re: Creators] +Ten bucks says she's not even dead. That's how little credit I give this show.
Magane and Persona still carry. Meteora and the MC are aggravating to a hilarious degree. Why would you give these two characters a five minute scene together? It's not touching - it's just boring. Like... they're trying to get an emotional response with these scenes (including the ending), but I just don't care because the characters are all so stupid.
Altair also sucks, but at least she has a cool looking ability.

really enjoying recreator, quickly becoming one of my fav anime. not liking the MC one bit BUT the way they handled the characters give me confidence they have something big planned for him.
