The series as a whole has some fairly questionable writing in some arcs, but since there's literally no other anime that can really claim to be an actual epic, it gets a pass. The real strength of the show lies in its strong characters and dialogue anyways. This. It took me about 20 episodes to get "into" it. But that's because, as said, the first arc is mostly a set up. Once you get a hang of the characters and start to adore them the conversations will start to carry. It will only get better and better the more the characters are growing on you throughout the show.

I'm enjoying it though it's the kind of anime where I don't feel the need to binge watch and can watch several episodes a day (more sometimes if there's a battle etc... going on). Yes, I realize it's about the characters and dialogue. It has a fair bit going in its favour there as well as the politics etc... The filler thing I mentioned was mostly because I felt that it'll be an all=out battle with some politics. Didn't think we'll get this other side but it's understandable. I think the only other thing that I meant to mention last time is that maybe it's just me but the anime is certainly not colorful lol. I'm guessing they used a darker palette on purpose? I think even the hair color isn't as bright as it could be. Regardless, the latest + Show Spoiler + failed attack that resulted in 20M dying, dang Side note. The ramifications of that battle will be felt through virtually the entire series! The next arc is is pretty much on point for almost the whole thing, and all the other admirals apart from the Big 3 will start getting more focus too. As for the art, LoGH tries to keep its presentation fairly grounded, so thats why you don't have lots of bright colors and what not. The most colorful you get are blonde and red hair. The series is quite different from your typical anime, in that its not design very animeish (if that makes sense)

+ Show Spoiler [Best boy] + Mittermeyer #1 He's such a cliche, but it works so well in the context of the series. I'd peg Oberstein as best written.

For me it's + Show Spoiler + Yang as favourite character. It's prolly Mittermeyer as admiral. And I agree with Spazer that Oberstein is best written. On another note: I haven't had good internet and probably won't have any in the upcoming days so I couldn't follow the current season anymore. However, I have started The Book of Bantorra yesterday because I had it downloaded on my laptop. I'm 6 episodes in and so far I think it's pretty decent. The setting definitely has potential.

LOGH: + Show Spoiler + About Oberstein, hes a good character, but I don't think the writing behind him is that strong. You can sum his character up in "what is the most machiavellian thing you could possibly do in any situation", and then cuts out virtually any humanizing traits (other than the dog, as dogs make for the ultimate humanizing trait).

The writing of the plot feels a bit rough to be honest but I'm getting a hang of it. I would say it's ok but I'm more interested in Hamyuts than anything else. Ep11 had way too many flashbacks about characters I don't care about. Ep12 was mostly flashback but it was interesting. It made me curious: How did Hamyuts become the Head of the Library? Looking forward to what is going to the next arc, now that Mattalast's and Hamyuts relationship is established. For the longest time you never knew what his real goal was and if he had ulterior motives.

There was a long period of time where I was certain that he was behind the scheme to remove our dear Siegfried Kircheis. Everyone regards him with suspicion, yet there is nothing to pin the blame on him. Was he moving to cover Reinhard out of true loyalty, or was it an act to curry favor? And so on. During Reinhard's crisis of faith, he's the the one that ALL the admirals hate, yet he's ultimately the guy who holds the ship together. Despite the fact that nobody trusts him (except Reinhard), he retains his position and power because of his political skill and savvy. His cold-bloodedness is very representative of the darker side of autocracy. The entire admiralty recognizes this and hates it, yet they let it slide because they realize its necessity (or at the very least, its usefulness). The admiralty may throw a fit every so often, but Oberstein's continued existence shows that they quietly approve of his actions. It's a reminder of what it takes to retain power, and how easy it is for an autocracy to become tyranny. In the latter half of the series, there are a lot of times where he behaves like a dick because... I guess he just hates everyone? It's hard to tell. In general though, it's actually detrimental to his cause since nobody wants to follow his orders. There's also a lot of times where Oberstein has a lot of information about certain events, yet he is either too slow or unwilling to stop them. To me, it's interesting thinking about which one of those two it is. Did he plan his own death, or was it really an accident? Etc. On that note, I do think that the way his story ended did a lot to color my perception of him as a character.
