Everyone says something different about RahXephon to be honest. Pretty divided and nobody can really agree on what they think relative to Evangelion, though I must admit I think the reaction to RahXephon is almost completely related to how people perceived Evangelion. Very few times do people actually treat RahXephon on its own, which I guess is kind of unfair.
Also I don't know where Miragee got my opinion on RahXephon from. I actually haven't watched it, but I mean the sentiment is probably true regardless I think. I've heard it's good and I want to watch it....eventually.

Probably going to watch Kaiji then. I'm not into gambling but if it's done well I will probably enjoying it regardless. Thanks for the input!
I really want to watch RahXephon for some reason but atm. I have next to no means to get my hands on ep1.
Honestly, I was just bored out of my mind with it. I think at least the OVAs were honest in their senselessness, but the TV series tried making sense of it and it came out as really boring and almost annoying to watch.
Eh? I could have sworn I got them from you. I suppose I was mistaken then, lol. Now I'm curious who told me that... Anyways, I actually watched the first episode at a café with free wifi (call me a nerd...) and now continued with the second one. Looks decent so far. I think I will continue to watch RahXephon and queue up Kaiji after that.
Your point about the Kyousou Giga TV series is something that might turn me off as well. I like nonsense but I don't like when they try to make sense out of nonsense.
Maybe we can watch RahXephon together. x)
I wouldn't be against that idea but it might be difficult atm. In what time zone are you? I'm in north-west Canada atm. so the internet service isn't what I'm used to. I'm about to head south though, which means I will be on the road for the next few weeks. I can't really tell when I will have access to decent enough internet until winter.
I've told Bigfan multiple times that I don't care wether he's watching it or not and that I'm just teasing him with it for keeping it in his "plan to watch" instead of just straight up saying he dropped it. Of course he says he'll continue watching it some day but we all know that's not going to happen
I don't think I've recommended Bakemonogatari to anyone aside from the guy who watched Owarimonogatari, said he liked it only for us to then realize that he watched it without having seen anything before that? I'm fairly open about liking it but I don't think I'm telling people to watch it (aside from BigFan for laughs). Not even my RL friends who ask about recommendations from time to time.

I've watched one of the movies but I don't remember. Maybe Kizu? Other than that, it's one of those too late anime to try and get into for me.
It's okay, though. I forgive you. We won't watch Bake, you won't Kakegurui (or give it a fighting chance). Did you ever watch all of Bungo Stray Dogs?

what? you weren't serious? You sure got me! oO;;
Its just damage control on his part. I think it took a while, but he finally realized how much of a joke he made it into

Like I said I'm pretty sure I've said that multiple times... wouldn't be surprised if there are pms or posts like that from like... 2015 or something like that? I'll check tomorrow. 5am over here
Look. Sometimes, there are just things you should watch. Or read. Because they are relevant and had an impact on the medium in which they exist. Did I want to read Beowulf? Chaucer? To Kill a Mockingbird? No, but they were part of an education in general literature. Film students have similar requirements.
I'm not going to argue that anime is in anyway similar to classic lit or film appreciation or music appreciation etc. However, there are some things that you should watch if you want to learn more about the evolution, the history, and impact of things in a medium. It's this kind of thinking that made me go find and watch Clannad and After Story - it was obvious from how frequently they came up that they did have an impact on the medium of some kind. Sometimes it's accidental (Yamato was airing as I grew up, NGE came out while I was in college, some other things that are considered "classics" or "perfect" anime came out while I was around to watch them.) Other things, I hear about, and whether or not I might generally like them, I may watch them to understand how they fit into the overall flow of how anime has gone through the years. (Also, this helps me get the jokes in some reference heavy anime, like say Excel Saga.) If nothing else, the Monogatari series of books and anime have had an impact; it's one of the few series I know of where there are commitments made about ensuring it all gets animated. And the Kizu movies were released globally (with, granted, limited distribution) - that's not common even for extremely popular anime that isn't Ghibli. (Reminds me, I need to see Your Name.) + Show Spoiler +
and I'll probably have to watch School Days. Because that apparently traumatized a whole lot of people, and while I'm probably not likely to enjoy that, it's a part of the landscape of anime.
Anyway, I binged Tsurezure Children and that was too good to be that short. The length of each episode and the short vignettes were good, but I would like to see them keep going because dammit + Show Spoiler +
dense girl and dense guy need to figure it out; they don't have any excuse that may apply in something like Gamers!
. Also, childhood friends' parents are hilarious.
Need to keep on getting back up to date on this season since I've been distracted... I still need to watch Ouigi Dark, Kizu III, and see where A Centaur's Problems is going to go after ep9 + Show Spoiler +
was suddenly pretty dark
.
Is it too early to see what's good for next season?
NGE fansubs were just hitting the US while I was in College. Yes we watched it. It was very good for the time. Like the original Ghost in the Shell. Or, for that matter, the original Robotech anime, Akira, Nausicaa, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Patlabor, Armitage.... etc, etc.
And while some people might clutch at their faces while bleeding from the eye cancer animation because they're over 30 years old (holy crap I feel old now) they were all good. (To varying degrees of good.)

The show just seems to enjoy going into some strange topics. Centaur body image issues, ancient aliens, concentration camps, tribal militants, the true nature of art, the worth of an artist, etc.
The show's really at its best when it's being weird. The social commentary is definitely there, but it's not heavy-handed. Overall, it's pretty enjoyable.

So new info about the LOGH remake was revealed today and... I mean it could be decent, i'm not totally happy with the character designs but they're also not terrible. Generic is probably the only word i really have to describe them. Too bishounen too. + Show Spoiler +
My overall thoughts are that reinhard doesn't look refined enough, he should be much more handsome too, hopefully he looks more + Show Spoiler +
regal after his coronation
Yang looks way too bishounen. Also too young. And kircheis looks... way way too generic
PV:
I'm happy that we're getting a narrator, gives me a bit more comfort in the adaption. Also the CGI spaceships actually doesn't look completely terrible, the brünhild has a good design too
The VAs are fine, i'm not gonna complain too much about that, i do think the original VAs were better fits for their characters but they're not bad casts either for this reboot
Kircheis is literally Akashi from KnB, the character designs definitely lost some of their charm from the OVA's. Yang suffered the most from the modern designs, he looks younger than Reinhard when he's supposed to be in his 30's.
CGI ships will take a while to get used to but look good aside from the laser beams. Besides it's not like the space battles looked good in the OVA's either so it shouldn't matter too much. The script is what matters most so hopefully whoever is in charge of the remake has competent writers/translators working on it.
It'll have two cours, one in spring 2018 and the other in 2019, with the second cour being released as 3 movies (likely to avoid censorship). Since this is a readaptation i'm curious to see how much they'll cover and what they'll skip as the OVA's also adapted a bunch of side stories and had some anime original content IIRC.

The thing with animation of any visual media really is that it's a combination of every aspect that makes up the quality of it. The script is very important but how that script is presented is just as important. Character design is one of the cornerstones of the production. It gives the grounding by which the script can be executed. Poor designs,or just overall aesthetics can tank a good script just as much as well as a poor script can.
The OVAs did a good job of creating designs that added value and served as a good grounding for the story. It's imperial space opera, those stories can be pretty silly at times and unrealistic. If you then take designs or aesthetics that are kind of silly on their own it's easy to break the tension of the story. People communicate through more than just words, there is so much in visual communication. Designs have to allow this aspect to really breath. This adds depth to characters while making them feel more like real people.
I hope it works out, i'm just not particularly confident with it doing so when I look at designs that look as if they been plagiarized by a university student the night before a the handin. I understand the desire to make this their own show. That's fine and good. Just put some fucking effort in maybe?
Why does Yang look like a 16 year old boy just doing the navy. Seriously what the fuck?
I like Yang's somewhat scruffy look (mostly the hair lol) especially when he's sitting back and thinking hard and scratching his head. Not a big fan of how he looks in the PV above. I doubt I'll watch this seeing as I'm only halfway through the show as of today. + Show Spoiler +
Don't want to see Yang beat Reinhardt again in the Ragnarok battle again T.T
