I agree with Elentos here. I don't think the loss at Blizzcon was anywhere as disappointing as, for example, the GSL loss to Zest.
Not only was it the best year of TY's career, there has also been a steady, general improvement going back to (at least) the last year of HotS. From there he transitioned very well into the first year of LotV, and transitioned at least as well into the second year of LotV. It shows that TY is more than capable of adjusting his game to the major changes there were introduced into the game on each of those occasions. It's hard to see why he shouldn't be able to do that for the new year.
2017 really seemed like a breakthrough for him. He has said on several occasions that he thought he never would have been able to win a tournament. It must be a big deal for your game to get rid of such a belief. It also seems like TY has emerged as a weekend-tournament player - or, at least a player that needs tournament games (as opposed to practice) to get hot and play his best in the biggest matches were the nerves start to fuck with him. His mental issues surrounding the game seems his biggest obstacle, it is a battle with himself. I really hope that he gets over this psychological barrier somehow. At least he was able to give Rogue a smile after that loss.
No matter what, TY in top form is still the most awesome thing in Starcraft! Hope he has a 2018 as good as his 2017.

What the heck just happened lol

I should just quote what I posted during the last Kings: "Shoutcraft Kings just isn't TY's thing is it"

Interview with TY and the Splyce gang coming up this Saturday! Should be fun, and there are going to be two translators (including Solar).

Bumping cause his GSL group is this week. He's really not played many tournament matches on the new patch really. Many of them losses against Protoss, too, so I was pretty concerned about his form. GuMiho has great TvT, Hurricane is underrated (and on a favorable patch for Protoss) and Losira is just cheesy enough to be a threat to TY even if he's not as good in macro games as him. But honestly he looked really good in the IEM qualifiers today. I mean okay, he lost to Dear and Solar so he didn't make it very far.
But against Solar he lost because of mistakes that he should be able to fix without much trouble (e.g. not transitioning even though he had the money and the knowledge required). And against Dear (a very high level player himself mind you), he just barely lost in super scrappy games.
He should be just fine in GSL.

Splyce sent Stats to the open bracket last year right? I'd rather him and TY not even make the server qualifiers considering they're some of the only koreans that would try the open bracket
|
See that's a thing as well, it's hard to be concerned over Solar, TY & Stats not qualifying now in terms of IEM, because they'll probably play in the open bracket even if they don't get through online anyway.
But I'd rather my favorite players win their matches.
|
Well it seems the talk of TY's struggles have been much exaggerated. That was an awesome showing in the GSL, were he has now advanced from 11 group stages in a row.
TY would be an absolute legend if he wins the GSL this season right after winning the Ultimate Whining Battle :D

Happy to hear that you think they will go anyway. It's not looking good right now, and it would suck to not have TY and the others there at Katowice. I think it was by far the best weekend tournament last year (and not just because of the champion). But why are you thinking that he will to the open qualifiers?

It's the biggest non-Blizzcon tournament of the year, I don't see why Splyce wouldn't fly their players in to play the open bracket even if they didn't qualify. They sent Stats last year, too.
|
Maybe Splyce won't have to send him at all.
In the final stage of the NA qualifier, TY is up against soO. Next would be Special/Gumiho, and then finally Iasonu/Maru/Dear/Scarlett.
A sick bracket. Looks like every game would be played on the Korean server.
|
TY didn't make it, and neither did Stats. Now Splyce has to cough up the money and send the whole team!
|
I think Splyce boys will be there for sure, then maybe a couple of herO/ByuN/soO/Zest. Hopefully JinAir send some players this year
|
Yeah, Jin Air should send the entire team too. Kinda hard to understand why there even is a team, with teamhouse and everything, if they don't do that.
|
Creator just said on stream that they want to go but couldn't confirm if they will.
|
So what to think of the GSL group?
TY avoided protoss but ended up in the group of death. Dark and soO are very difficult to play against, for different reasons, and aLive can beat him in a tvt as well, even if TY is favoured there.
Definitely going to be the group with the best starcraft though.
|
Dark is the biggest threat for TY, so it's unfortunate he plays him first. With his current form I'd for sure favor him over soO and aLive.
|
TY struggles against Dark. But is very favoured against the others.
Only way he doesn't get out is if he faces Dark twice
|
Brackets for IEM are out. TY has a very doable one with Ryung looking like the toughest opponent.
I wonder if this early start is actually an advantage for TY (assuming he qualifies). Last year, he seemed to getter better and better doing weekend tournaments while starting out rather shakily.
The qualifiers are stacked this year which means that the group stage is going to be extremely competitive. There will be no sleepwalking through that stage.

aLive just outplayed TY :’(
This is a bad start to the year for him
