I watched Zest streaming and when I started watching he was ranked 34th in grand master. In the time I watched he faced 2 Terran players and 2 Zerg players with a higher MMR than his. I did not know their names because it was in Korean but they had to be top of the line pros. Zest could play 12 hours on Korean ladder and never face an opponent with an MMR below 5500 which would be top tier Masters.

The ladder is good for general skill/practice, but practice partners allow you to train against specific builds/races and on specific maps. For example, if you have a match against byuN on Overgrowth next week, you might ask a practice partner to 3rax reaper you every game on that map until you get good at holding it. Plus it allows you to hide builds a bit better, and practice builds that may not be on ladder etc. Even when byuN won GSL without a team, he said he had to practic with certain protoss beforehand

Zest is not working hard! Not on his streams. I see a lot of sitting, drinking, talking being on the phone. When I watched for a while he played several games then took a short break. Played several more and then did nothing for 15 minutes up until I came over to post this. Of course 700 people are still watching, but he does not strike me as a really angry motivated guy ready to have a great 2nd half of the year. He should be because GSL season 2 and not being able to take a map in group is got to be the lowest he has ever been. Rotterdam works harder during his streams and he is not even a pro player.

Also taking breaks isn't a bad thing. The game can be stressful as fuck and he probably just wants to take a couple minutes to read chat and talk to his fans between game. It doesn't mean he isn't motivated.

Hopefully with the new IEM if he can qualify he may still have a chance for WCS. Big maybe tho, he'd have to win a cup minimum

I think the Zerg was Dark. The way he's playing now he has a chance against anybody.

Stats is only 30th ranked in GM ladder. So perhaps for the last 40% of the year Zest is poised to make his move as the world's best Protoss. Perhaps an SoS 2015 type run is in order. SoS got hot, barely qualified for blizzcon and won it all.
