XPIRL (Experience in real life) Happy new year and welcome to this real life game! If you missed this blog thread, read it for more information. It's a great honor to contribute my once in a lifetime 1337 post to create this thread!
[Q] What is this game? [A] Basically it is a game where you gain XP from doing chores in real life.
[Q] When will this game start? [A] Monday 4th of January, and you can join in anytime after!
[Q] Why do this way? [A] First of all, To get people started in this new year with resolutions they might have! To become more motivated, active, more healthy and pursue their goals more efficently.
This thread is not for everyone! If you find yourself perfectly happy with the ways of things, and dont feel you need this to try boost you on the way, then this is not for you. This is for those who wanto wear off that lazyness and get into a new fresh decade with a new attitude!
More reasons why you should do this? + Show Spoiler +- To get healthier, you gain more energy in everyday life.
- You get to keep more track of what you do, and look back and see the progress.
- Girls love boys who know how to cook, do laundry, clean etc. The more you do these things, the more comfortable you get doing it, and less problem you will have doing it later on in life.
- It will make you feel more satsified in the end of each day.
- You will grow as a person.
- When you discover new areas you might find hidden talents you never knew you had.
Look at it as a challenge!
What you need to do to get started
- Signup by posting a reply that you wanto join. + Show Spoiler +
If you want, you can add uptil 5 XP chore choises you made yourself. These can be use in addition to all the ones in the OP! These 5 you create is to fit your lifestyle. These 5 choises can be changed during the end of each week if they already led you towards your goal or if priorities changed. Eg. "Get a girlfriend" after you got one, it can be changed to a new goal. They are simply there to get your own priorities in this game.
- Find a place where you can keep track of your your XP and what you achieve each day.
- Weekly reports. I will edit this thread with scores at the end of each week
- Make sure to read the guidelines down below.
- To keep more track of your own progress, you can add additonal stats. + Show Spoiler +
Eg. 1 point in domestic work, intelligence etc for each hour of work depending on what you do.
- You should add a bonus for each 5 or 10 levels to give yourself an extra reward if you feel it can motivate you even more. + Show Spoiler +
Eg. have plans of buying something or wanto travel a place, you can add this, and not allow yourself to do it until you reached a level. Then it will be a reward for your work! You can also keep a friend informed of what you are doing here, and ask him if he can plan a surprise for you once you reach a certain level.
Guidelines + Show Spoiler +- Do not add XP for time that you did not spend.
+ Show Spoiler +Eg. If you study, and take breaks every 5mins, it needs effective time spent
- Every XP gained, has to be done because you chose to gain it
+ Show Spoiler + Eg. You cannot add a 3min walk to the store as a workout, if you were going to do it anyway. However, if you had a 3min drive, and you chose to walk instead 15min, this can be consider exercise.
- You can split the hour, for instance, 25XP per 15min if that fits your sceduale better (note, read 2 rules above)
- Things you gain XP from cannot be things you normally do as hobbies. You must have a harder time doing it in order to gain any decent amount of XP.
+ Show Spoiler +Eg. you cannot add guitar practice, if your already been playing for several years
- Normal oblicatory things like going to school or work everyday does not give you XP.
- Be honest about everything, this game is for your own gain!
- XP from own personal XP chores, must be balanced/comparable with the ones in the OP. The final XP can be discussed futher in this thread.
- You will gain additional 50XP from each hour you do hour based things combined.
+ Show Spoiler +Eg. studying for 2hours straight will give you 250XP, 3 hours 400XP etc.

haha what a neat idea. I think i'll sit it out though. number crunching would be too time consuming. anyway, I would totally pwn everyone, I do so much house work
|
this sounds awesome i'd like to sign up i just didn't get exactly what the goals should be like, please tell me if these are okay
+ Show Spoiler + 1. winning any prize in any bulgarian sc tournament/league 2. finishing the school year with an average of at least 5.50 (using the american grade system that would be an A with minimum points) so i can get a little bit of a scholarship next year 3. getting fitter (if anyone can figure out a way how to calculate a thing like that)
can't think of anything else right now

can't think of anything else right now awesome, I edited the goals part abit. the goals are really chores that will take you towards that goal.
For your part, it can be to focus practice your build orders and game theory, hotkey usage, study replays, maybe get some take a couple of tutoring classes from the good players on TL that offer it. But to gain XP it cannot be mass gaming, because it is not the same thing. It is easy to mass game without studying or imporving, without working toward your goal. Then it becomes nothing but pleasure and fun for the sake of fun, and not towards improvement. Also the XP cannot be high for each hour, since its a huge part of your main hobby. But this is definitly a possiblity!

But this is definitly a possiblity! well i'm not too bad of a player, my highest rank was B+ and i've had a few notable accomplishments (taking out yoon and white-ra in a zotac in order to get to the semifinals for example) as far as my popularity level goes. the thing is i'm too lazy to play enough and my mechanics get pretty bad when i'm semi-inactive anyway, i feel like we're getting a little bit off-topic with that (are we?). so the goals should be hourly things and i myself choose what amount of xp they should give me (while being fair of course)?

Haha this idea is pretty cool but I don't need it

Signups end today, more people should try this out!
|
very cool idea! Good Luck
|
i can't believe there's so little interest towards this, it sounds really good
|
i am so in. today i drank like 9 glasses of water, are we starting today or what? edit: i am retarded, but im still in. sounds like a great motivation to get off my lazy ass.
btw as far as 1 time only things go: quitting smoking should be like at least worth more than quitting WoW.
|
Holy crap. this idea is so awesome - I totally, totally need it for when school starts for me (not for another 2 weeks) to keep me off of video games so much, and focusing on my studies and more useful things in general :o I guess for a lot of these things, you'd be keeping a blog (with pictures maybe?) recounting the things that you've done?
Anyways, since im still on winter break, I'll say to tentatively not put me on the list yet (or u can, just I wont really have any goals yet)
|
sign me in but im not sure how long i would last in this game but plz put me in the list
|
Hopes for the next semester (I don't want to set goals for a decade) + Show Spoiler +1. getting better at english and german 2. better understanding of economics and finance 3. getting my degree 4. be in good shape physically
Missing any of these is rewarded by XP loss for me in the next few weeks (till I pass the relevant exams): + Show Spoiler +not learning an hour of accounting = -100 xp german = -70 xp something else = -150 xp [I mean an hour per day of course]
I hope it's ok to set XP loss triggers. I think it will work better for me this way for certain things. (If I fail some of my exams, I might be out of university.) It's not that my only motivation to do these is simply for the XPIRL game, but maybe it shows the situation more correctly if I lose points instead of just not gaining them.

this doesn't sound like irl thing.. These are IRL things in the way that they increase creativity and you actually do something to contribute rather than sit by and watch other do everything. It's about the attitude you have towards the things you do!

Cool man that your up for this and already started, although It doesnt start until tomorrow
The XP need to be same for everyone if its going to be comparable. So your school work is actually worth 100XP / hour like in OP section. any similarities you should take the XP suggesten in the OP aswell. Although, if you got any personal new possible XP gains, that is NOT listed in the OP, you write these up as you already did. I added some of them in the OP, those are really cool. Also I cut some down to 5 (limit) personal goals. I might balance some of them out aswell, but seems good so far.

You can still add your 5 of your own chores if you wanto in your own sceduale.

That studying was for my exams, (which I failed to do at all today, so all minus XPs kick in ( not learning an hour of accounting = -100 xp german = -70 xp something else = -150 xp) thats minus 330xp.
By the way, I think 100 xp is just a bit too much for studying an hour. Asking a girl out or getting a job, quitting a bad habit etc. should be worth a lot more compared to that. Also, I feel a little uncomfortable at the top of the list, so that's why I'm complaining. :p
|
Today was pretty lazy for me. need to step it up. Wasnt feeling good at all tho. Though I got enough water and veggies (60XP)
I might lower it to 80XP for studying. Seems alot atm. We will see.

there should be classes to choose from!
|
For today and yesterday: Cleaned my room (300) 2 liters of water x2 (60) 1.5 hrs working out (150) 1 hr studying (100) .5 hr playing guitar (75)
for 685 xp!

I'd like to point out that drinking 2 liters of water per day is a complete waste.
You get 70% of the water your body needs through the food you eat.
The 30% left is up to water.
So unless you eat absolutely nothing a couple glass of water per day should keep you fine -_-...
|
The only thing drinking 2 liters a day does is make you urinate more -_-
|
I wanna join! the only thing i like is playing games (: i've didn't smoke now for 2 weeks, but can i count exp as "quitting smoking"? cause before that i smoked 1pack a day. While i still REALLY want to smoke, i'm kind of cheating by taking "snus" (swedish chewing tobacco product kinda) instead. what sounds fair to you? Edit: i think you should remove the 2 litres of water and replace it with: "staying well hydrated and keeping water easily accessible at all times" or something like that, cause always keeping water near and drinking plenty when you feel like it will keep you away from more unhealthy drinks like soda. And even juice is bad for your teeth and contains lots of calories which is a problem if you have trouble keeping weight in check. EDIT!: will do this later hopefully :p

I passed my motherfucking german exam today! Should have set an XP score for that. Whatever, minus points for not learning an hour of german are cancelled now.
edit: I'll try drinking water today lol :p. Also, I'm having a pretty hard exam tomorrow, so hopefully I'll gather a whole bunch of XP tonight.

wait why is 50pushups 400 xp while a backflip is 200 xp? Backflips are pretty hard man
|
I worked out for 40 minutes today. (66 XP) I cooked a very delicious and extremely healthy gourmet consisting of various fruits of the earth (i.e. potatoes etc.) I did not study, because school was closed due to a half meter of snow yesterday! Since monday I have not eaten anything extremely unhealthy (candy, chips etc), and I've kept a rather tight diet, actually!
Sorry for coming out a bit late (Kind of forgot... I have terrible memory, but I promise to get at it now!), but that's my loss, I suppose!
Also: I really think me and a guy called Matthias could be great friends... After the holidays we started becoming pretty good conversational partners!

Made pancakes and cleaned up all the dishes (call it 100) Cleaned the bathroom (not on the list, call it 100) 1 hr work out (100) 2 liters water (30) 30 mins guitar (75 I really need to find some direction with this. I'm pretty much just dicking around at the moment) 30 minutes studying (50) Total = 455

It's a good idea, but I won't get much xp -_- I do most of these things anyway

Mh Personal XP stuff: I hope these are fine - Play Iccup - 20xp per hour... cause I'm one of these people who read/post a lot on TL, watch a lot of vods but never play. I really need to motivate myself to get better - Practice Guitar - 100 XP - It's not a new instrument for me but, I play a lot of guitar without never learning anything, I need to actually sit down on my ass and learn new stuff a lot more than I do atm - Practice Piano/keyboard 100 XP (havent played it in many years) - Succeed with my preliminary medical exam - 1000 XP - you know... pretty important if I wanna become a doctor - Get a weight of 84 kg (80kg atm) - 500 XP
I think you should raise the exp required to gain a lvl up.. with the numbers the way they are I'll probably gain at least 2 levels each day, even without my personal xp points.
Oh I have another Idea give me -20 xp for every hour I spend in front of the computer (unless I'm doing some useful stuff like recording/revising or whatever)

Your welcome to join. Quit smoking counts from today, so if you quit once in the past, it wont count in this game I'm afraid. But I can add a "Quit Snus" since it isnt healthy for you either
And I think it will stay 2 liters, its a limit and rather easy to measure. It's not a big difference.

I would say 500XP for gaining 4kgs is kinda easy, but I guess it differs from people. Why do you wanto gain weight? Also, we have a instrument XP gain in the OP already. It will be quite easy to gain levels at the start, but after a while it will take longers. I will add more levels. It's just to get people going.
I would rather give you XP for not spending time on your computer like someone else had.

Well in the op I can only see " Learning a new instrument (150XP / hour)" Since they arent new for me I thought it would be fairer to give me a little less xp / hour. I really dont think gaining 4 kgs is easy, its way way harder than losing 4kgs in my experience. Obviously this is (hopefully) mostly gonna be through gaining more muscles, not fat. Itll probably take at least 2 months, while gaining 500 xp through studying wont even take me a day. XP for not spending time on my pc? so if I get 10xp for each hour itll be like 220 exp if I spend 2 hours in front of the pc in a day? Mh, punishment would be better instead imho.
Anyways, my character needs to rest now to restore AP ^^ night

Drinking 2 litres of water a day and cutting out fat from your diet aren't actually good ideas. Just fyi.

In all seriousness though, I'm pretty sure for 90% of people on this site could be healthier with cutting fat from their diet (I'm assuming no one is starving in a third world country and regulars Teamliquid). Also the 2 liters of water thing is a guideline but in general, is a healthy amount to consume and you would notice the effects.

Fat is an essential part of any diet and cutting it out is harmful. Anyone who believes that eating fat = putting on weight, is sadly misinformed.
edit - Also, 2 litres of water (especially on top of other daily beverages) is actually way more than enough for most people, unless they are performing sports or other vigorous activities. Drinking too much water can actually flush out vital minerals and vitamins from the body.

from wikipedia:
The human body is anywhere from 55% to 78% water depending on body size.[31] To function properly, the body requires between one and seven liters of water per day to avoid dehydration; the precise amount depends on the level of activity, temperature, humidity, and other factors. Most of this is ingested through foods or beverages other than drinking straight water. It is not clear how much water intake is needed by healthy people, though most advocates agree that 6–7 glasses of water (approximately 2 liters) daily is the minimum to maintain proper hydration.[32] Medical literature favors a lower consumption, typically 1 liter of water for an average male, excluding extra requirements due to fluid loss from exercise or warm weather.[33] For those who have healthy kidneys, it is rather difficult to drink too much water, but (especially in warm humid weather and while exercising) it is dangerous to drink too little. People can drink far more water than necessary while exercising, however, putting them at risk of water intoxication (hyperhydration), which can be fatal. The "fact" that a person should consume eight glasses of water per day cannot be traced back to a scientific source.[34] There are other myths such as the effect of water on weight loss and constipation that have been dispelled.[35]

Today I'm claiming 2 liters (30) Dishes (30) And spent 4 hours fixing my stupid network problem! Its not on the list, but I ad hoc 150 xp for that. Really, it was a growing experience
So 210 experience
|
5 hours of studying throughout the week, I wish I could count more but stupid aim and facebook. So that's 500 xp for studying.
I have ran so far 4 times this week which includes today. The first three days I ran 4 miles around 30 minutes and 5 miles today around 40 minutes. In total, experience for that is about 170.
I worked four times out doing push ups/crunches/planks so that's 200 xp.
Sadly, I couldn't play my guitar which is just collecting dust or do anything more but I still have tomorrow to make gather more xp.
All xp combined is 870 so I'm level 2. Oh and today is day 4.
Edit: Add 50 more xp for 30 min of guitar playing so that is 900. Now I am level 3.

Hmm.. A common problem I experience when weighing myself is that my weight is touching the bottom in one corner, so if I stand on that I drop about 10 kilos.. You think it might be something like that? It's all I've got
Edit: I.e. that you stand on it normally at start, and coincidentally after training you shift your weight around differently

Ok my week: 4 hours of studying -> 550xp 5 hours of studying, 700xp 5 hours of studying, 700xp 3 hours of studying 400xp 2 hours of studying 250xp

Sunday again, it would seem! It's been a week with atleast an average temperature of three degrease celcius, but as a viking-by-blood I've been keeping scheduel nicely; the cold hardly affecting me.
So let's see:
This week I've spent just about three and a half hours studying for/holding my breath, so that's 350 EXP overall
And as usual 3 hours of weight lifting
6 hours of studying
Cooked a meal
3,5 hours of volleyball with intensive shot-practice!
Broke my record by another 20 seconds, so now I'm at 4:30 since yesterday! If I really keep pushing like I did this week I might actually make 5 minutes sooner or later!
And then I went on a 30 minute jog from the gym instead of taking the bus so that's another 50
3 days of healthy-ness (I just can't help it when it gets to near-weekend xD)
Week: 1790
Overall: 1790 + 2966 = 4756 Beat that! :p
