Fun will come with experience, don't worry. As soon as you understand the underlying mechanics of the game, and get how to use them to your advantage. Then the only thing standing between you and an awesome day is the rest of your team.

Other Tier III tanks are shooting me for 230-300 damage a shot but the most I can do is about 60 a shot. Did not have this issue in T1/T2 matches. Is the T-70 just THAT awful? I was doing amazing on the T-60, winning most games with 2-3 kills and not dying. Now I pretty much get instagibbed within 60 seconds of the match starting, before I can even fire a shot off in most cases.
Should I go back to the T-60 (elite) and just farm XP on there?
Few notes: - There are only a small handful of Tier III tanks that can do that much damage in one hit. So chances are you're either unlucky running into them, or you actually mean Tier IV's and V's? Which you can definitely be meeting in your Tier III. Here's a graphic illustrating the concept of battle tiers (and here's the entire wiki section if you'd like). - A lot of tanks have guns that do much less alpha damage (damage per shot) than other tanks at their tier, but there are almost always trade offs. Shorter reload, better accuracy, better penetration. It depends on the gun. So you might be getting instagibbed by big, slow reloading derp guns, but your gun might actually do more damage over time (damage per minute, DPM) than it. Perhaps. I don't know the line of Russian tanks you're doing right now very well, but if they're quicker and lighter, it's likely they don't have AMAZING guns, but rather rely on mobility a bit more (wiki makes the best gun on the T-70 sound pretty decent tho). - As a follow up to guns/;damage, one thing that took me a bit to learn is AIMING. Not just aiming so you'll hit an enemy, but actually aiming AT weak spots ON the enemy. Certain places like the lower plate, sides of the turret, turret ring, commander hatches, etc. have much weaker armor and will penetrate more reliably. Hitting anything as close to dead on, no angle, helps immensely. If you do a bit of Googling there may some nice images/videos detailing this. - Lastly, when I was newer, the idea of free XP seemed insanely useful to me too. Now that I understand the gold economy a bit more, it's not really worth it. At least not farming it on other tanks like you mentioned (which was my idea precisely). You can use it to fill in the gaps if you're a little bit away from an upgrade or what not, but don't spend gold to convert it on other tanks unless you're desperate. Tier III won't take as long as you think. And it does get much better IMO. Even tho there's the occasional bad matchmaking and such around Tier V, and still a few derps as mentioned a few posts back, it rewards smarter play more and you'll feel the effects of having roles and team dynamics a bit more.
Yeah... I think it's the Tier Vs causing problems. If I get a game with all Tier IIIs I walk out with 3-4 kills and like 20k credits / 1000+ XP per match. If I get into a match with Tier IV/Vs (which seems to happen about 75% of the time) I just get instagibbed since I am unable to penetrate any of their armor and they all hit me for 200+ a shot. Walk out of those games with 5k credits and maybe 300 XP. It really, really, really slows down the leveling. People in-game keep mentioning the III-V area is awful but once I hit V it will go away almost entirely (except for a less-frustrating period around VII-VIII).
I'm almost at IV so that should help ease the pain a tad as well. Does anyone on TL run in groups or anything? I'd love to learn some strategy. People in solo queue just seem to run around with no coordination. Already tired of seeing heavys afking in a bush by our spawn point or lights charging out into the middle of a field at the start only to die immediately. Oh, and the teamkillers... seem to get one every 2-3 matches and they always tend to take out the highest rated player on the team :|
The fuck? A tank just dove underwater and started shooting me. Couldn't target it. Asked about it in-game and was told some tanks can submerge...
Same guy got 9 kills that match. They won 15-0.
This is getting kind of ridiculous... Hetzer going 9-0 in my last match, hitting for 310+ damage a shot. Literally oneshot every TIII and half of the TIVs on our team while taking zero damage. I'm just not sure at all what to do about this. They seem to outrange me as well so half the time I die there's not a visible tank anywhere on my screen. If I try to hide somewhere to ambush them they see me before I can see them and I die. If I try to stay moving it's usually the same issue. In the rare chance I get the jump on them... I can't penetrate their hull anymore for more than 20-30 damage (out of their 300HP+ health pools) and I die on their first shot.
So confused. It's like League of Legends ELO Hell all over again.

What I highlighted in bold sounds about right, and means you're in really good shape. It's just the luck of the matchmaker at these tiers. However being near the bottom isn't always entirely hopeless.
When I'm leveling tanks in the III-V range and I end up in a game where the top tanks are way above me like that, I either stay waaaay back and snipe for free damage/exp, and as an annoyance. Or I scout, for the team and for the xp. As of the most recent patch, if you kill the tracks on a tank and other people damage it, you'll get bleed over xp for it just like with spotting. So it may behoove you to just aim for the tracks, which I find I can usually take out with some shots even if the tank is way better than mine, and now you'll get the shared xp even though you aren't doing any damage.
That's bad luck about the team killers. I haven't had anything nearly that bad. What server?
Also in your second post above, I have no idea lol. No tanks can "submerge" (not even the might TOG battleship!). If you go underwater you have 10 seconds before you die, so maybe he got a lucky shot off before he got wrecked by the water?
No... this tank sat underwater the entire fight. I tried going in water in the next match and I died quite fast, even in shallow (half my tank was still above water). This guy was literally a submarine the entire match which leads me to believe it was some kind of hack or exploit but everyone else in the game seemed to think it was normal.
I'm on US East server. Fair amount of teamkillers that I've encountered. Strangely there are none when I play a Tier I tank - only the T3-5 bracket ever seems to have any. Perhaps people in the same situation as me taking out their anger lol.
But yeah, I've started trying to knock out treads and whatnot. I'm one match away from Tier IV so I'm hoping that will help out a lot.
He was probably sitting in shallow water, i have never heard of an exploit that makes you go underwater.

The hetzer is pretty overpowered. You can use a "derp" gun on the hetzer, it also has a very good armor to the front making it hard to kill it.
Derp guns are high damage, low accuracy guns that can usually oneshot lower tier tanks.
I would suggest you read up on the spotting system in the game, cause its pretty important. Heres a video explaining it
Also, as people have said, the game doesnt get balanced until tier 5-6 and up.
Awesome video. Explained a lot (I thought fallen trees acted as cover :x)
Also oh god, I'm Tier IV now... but I have a Tier VI POG with 1200 HP on the other team. I have 200 HP. I have a feeling this will not end well for me.
The TOG is one of a kinda. Don't expect everything to have that much HP
Check out some of the other videos in that same series that Sekalf linked. Camo one is really important, but also check out the damage mechanics one. Definitely super helpful.

Fallen trees actually acts as cover, but they didnt when that video was released afaik. They added in a patch some time ago. Other than that I think the video was correct That youtube channel is the official world of tanks channel and its got plenty of nice tutorial videos to check out.
The TOG has an awesome gun and health pool, but terrible armor and movement speed.
Also remember that you need to level up your tank before you will do good with it. That is, getting new guns and such. So dont base your performance on your first couple matches after you get the tank. What tank is it youre playing with now?

I'm not 100% sure now, but they actually do. Well, they act as concealment. I think i read somewhere that they changed values for that specifically.

Well, this and the fact that thing is bigger than an aircraft carrier. It literally sticks out behind every cover with it's butt. I love playing against TOGs, because they're like XP/Money-pinatas.

I'm using the SU-85G now. I've been doing fairly well with it... usually 2-3 kills per game as long as my teammates aren't all afkers. If the Lights on my team spot I get a ton of damage in. Got a sniper medal last game ^_^
If everyone afks in bushes then it usually doesn't end well for me since I still get oneshot if I try to spot myself. I don't have the speed to outrun shots, nor does my turret have the ability to fire on the move like Lights do.
Things are going smoother than last tier, though. Not nearly as many T6 tanks in these games so I'm usually in the upper 50% of the list (compared to last tier where I was dead last at least half of my games). Occasionally I get lucky and I'm #1 on the list with a bunch of T3s and I just destroy them :D

You mean the SU85B? That tank is a tank-destroyer (TD), its meant to be played like a sniper. Hiding and using its high camo factor. The soviet tds usually have low view range so you need other tanks to spot (the su85b have nice view range though, but that is with a good crew).
Also remember that if you move when hiding then you will lose your camo. You can move the gun, but not the hull of the tank.
/edit: Had a really weird game just now. Apart from the fact that we got only one kill...I hit the opponents several time but none of my shots penetrated. The statistic at the end said that I hit none of them which can't be true because I shot one directly in front of me(turret). Apart from that, I hit some tracks(critical hit).
So I (unfortunately) started playing this game and am kind of enjoying it. Is there any newb guides or things to read like there is for dota? Like how does the crew work and stuff like that. I understand the different rounds and penetration but only being at t2/t3 I just grab the biggest gun and load HE rounds and one shot everything.
Kinda funny how efficiency etc went really up after I pretty much stopped playing scouts and lower tier tanks. 1300+ in everything when the average is still below 1000.

has a lot of well written articles for details of some of the mechanics, both in and out of game. Other than that, check out some of the videos posted recently. Crew's something you don't really need to think much about until Tier V-ish at least.
