The combat system of dragon age is very similiar to WoW, there is also little roleplaying and the game "feels" like an open world, but it is actually pretty linear. I was bored with it pretty fast. This is how I feel about it too. It's like a lot of the popular MMORG elements, like cooldown based spellcasting, threat based AI, and heal/dps/tank party dynamics somehow crept their way into a game that was supposed to be a throwback to BG. The way the story plays out feels -somewhat- like BG, but thats mostly because BioWare RPGs are all fairly similar on some level. My main gripe was the combat system though. I hate it when the game gives you easily accessible abilities that basically manipulate the AI, like being able to shout at the beginning of combat and have everything go after a near invulnerable warrior while your squishy rogue runs around stabbing things to death. Not a bad game though, just a huge disappointment if you expecting it to be a modern BG. NWN2's first expansion did a better job at that IMO.

I know what you mean about wanting to have total control and emotional attachment to a character, which is harder when the earlier levels were 'taken care of' and therefore they don't feel as much 'your baby' as they could. I still don't think that diminishes from the overall quality of the game enough to make it worse than BG1. Also, what the hell @ NWN2. I played the game recently with a friend, hoping to enjoy it. What a vain hope. The voice acting made me want to vomit, the story and characters were completely contrived and unimpressive, the game system extremely cliché with no innovation and (well this is my prejudice) a worse method of character control than almost any other DnD RPG. The whole art design and pacing of the game makes me think it was designed for preschoolers. What an embarrassment of a game. I honestly can't help but think that people who prefer NWN to BG are simply lacking maturity. It was upsetting, because I'm still waiting for a really great RPG to come along and give me a mix of the beauty of Dragon Age and the gameplay of BG 1/2. Haha so true man, NWN 2 is terrible. Ugly, poor performance even with patches and a good PC, terrible camera and stupid story with cliche characters. motb has a better story and could be a decent game but sadly the shitty game engine makes it almost unplayable. This game is uglier than BG1 in low res. LOL /rant about stupid ugly 3D engines who look worse then the old 2D stuff -.-

In response to the other guy asking if DA is the spiritual successor to BG2, I think no it's definitely not. Afaik there isn't a spiritual successor to it...if you are trying to get the BG2 feel but with better graphics from a 3d game...you'll never find it .

They can get quite brutal and I think you can rightfully consider yourself to be a master of BG if you can make it through the Solaufein, Improved Anvil and Sword Coast Strategems mods. Afterwards take a look at Icewind Dale and Temple of Elemental Evil. stupid story with cliche characters. Yeah, I was confused that Obsidian made such acliche game and characters too. There had to be some hack writer on their creative team who was on board specifically for that game because everything they've done before and after were mostly good. And I still want to punch Lucas in the face for rushing The Sith Lords.

So much extra effort put into DAO's 3d engine... for what? Id rather have a 2d game with more depth, more freedom, etc than a '3d' game that graphics add almost nothing to the experience. They can make some pretty 2d games nowadays if they tried, and even BG-type games dont look all that bad these days considering their age. A new 2d game with nicer animations, spells, higher resolutions, crisp painting like backdrops, etc would be such a treat. It would be a real shame if we never see games like this again.

Gaming is more mainstream now, especially with all the consoles on the market. Game development tries to hit the largest audience possible and thus extreme graphics, dumbed down gameplay and games released before they were finished is the norm nowadays. It is too bad for gamers who want quality content and challenging gameplay like me... I don't care about some flashy graphics if there is no coregame worth playing, the graphics is a bonus but not what defines it. As long as the game developers make money on this kind of marketing I doubt that it will ever change, but one can only hope.

EXACTLY what i was thinking about recently when i played planescape torment. dragon age was a HUGE dissapointment and to think we will never get a game like PS:T or BG2 again is sad. PST just sucked me in and i couldnt stop playing for like 3 days. dragon age i didnt even finish (stopped after the "meeting") cause i found nothing exciting at all about it. limited combat, standart story, bland characters, mmo like quests, limited and boring world... meh.. if they would announce a new BG/similar game i would preorder it at the very same day. dragon age2 i dont know if ill even bother to download it to test... i mean didnt they announce they want to dumb it down even further? remember something about them saying they want to make combat etc more "actionheavy".. i cant understand why they dont make a new one in that style. i mean sure those games are big but compared to todays standart it should by quite cheap. and im sure evryone who ever playd on of those games plus the press would go CRAZY about something like a BG3. one thing i heard tho is that there is a lawsuit going on for some time as one of the reasons why we see no new d&d game. From what I can tell DA2 is looking to basically be Mass Effect with swords. You'll be playing a basically pre-made character, and just sort of playing out a story, not creating your own. Combat looks like it will be the same on PC just with more death animations. Inventory is much more limited, I don't even think you can even fully re-equip your party members anymore.

Planescape Torment is a masterpiece of a game. I don't think we'll get a game like that anytime in the near future.

It's not bad though, I'm just really picky about single player games nowadays. I <3 you =) That is very true. Newer games lacks the huge work (and love!) that was put into games like BG2.

BGate was a great single player experience and would love to play another installment of something like this. My only complaint was that chars became way too powerful and/or their opponents too weak. But then again I always played on the D&D core rules setting and should replay the game with the slider moved (tho I believe this only effects monster hp not spell casters etc). Money from thieving became way too abundant in the game as well and felt like cheating. BGate3 with more interface and more options would be a blast! The sprite based graphics of BG2 were beautiful and plenty sufficient to immerse me into the fantasy world. Here's an idea for extended gameplay and new twist on rpg: You the evil player are to build a fortification throughout the game i.e. your own dungeon in which to thwart the "good guys" who are destined to come knocking. You still "adventure" about the world routing out good guys from their various sanctuaries, earn xp, gain power, recruit bad guys for your stronghold as well as earn the necessary income to support the ultimate den of evil. .. anywho I'd love to play more interesting games like BG2 rather than be wooed by graphics. If I want graphics I'll check out some good porn.
