So either I wait for a Draft/Modern FNM to come up, or I try my luck with one of those starter/'noob' decks they sell. I don't really care about losing (or even getting destroyed), because that will likely happen even if I play with a top tier deck because I literally have 5 games worth of M:tG experience. I just want to get some experience under my belt and hopefully meet some fun new people. What cards do you own that are Standard legal? Maybe some people can make suggestions for a budget deck including those Borrowing cards/deck is also a good idea.

So either I buy one of those pre-constructed decks or copy a decklist from somewhere and buy the cards from magicers.nl or a similar site. With the amount of options to choose from (there's literally dozens of pre packaged decks alone to choose from), not to mention hundreds of decks with all kinds of weird names, what do you guys recommend? I generally favour more control oriented play styles, but anything that gets me playing for relatively little money is fine.

As far as I know, mtgsalvation is the 'best' mtg forum, and this is the section about budget standard decks.

Thanks, I'll use that as a reference point for the future. For now, I bought the Conquering Hordes (Khans of Tarkir event deck) just so I can at least play tomorrow. I hear it's pretty terrible but at least it'll get me playing. At 20 euros it's hard not to get value even if most of the cards are terrible. Let's see if I can do anything other than 0-3 tomorrow (I'd be really shocked if that happened).

Graveyard hate doesn't do much against those decks though. It only slows them down at the cost of 1 card from you. And Thoughtseize is really not that great currently with everybody playing Tral :/ It's a really hard choice. Since Scapeshift did so poorly at worlds I guess I'll play that ah ah ah.

Forcing them to have to hardcast fatesticher rather than unearth it seems like a pretty major tempo loss to me. I do agree with thoughtsieze though, it might not be the the nut high but it is an option. I want to be super jank and play Shiftzoo, but I need BBE to come back. BABY COME BACK.

Yesterday on MTGO I beat a turn 3 suppression field by comboing out very late with a single Conclave. Single-targeted hate doesn't work that well against this deck, your best bet is outright destroying the Ascendancy with Decay.

And even that wasn't great as Sam Black died holding 2 Decays against Utter-Leyton's Ascendancy, he just went off at instant speed... That new Fatestitcher build is pretty insane. Edit: And BDM just dropped the "I like what I see in your dick" on World Magic Cup stream....LOL

Next week there's another Standard tournament in the afternoon, and then a draft tournament in the evening. Will probably join both if I can find the time. Meanwhile I'm looking at ways to improve the deck, doubt I'll look for a new deck or type of deck before I've gotten a few more games under my belt. What I took away from the games today: -I lack removal. Currently have close to no way of removing either big threats (Siege Rhino, Goblin Rabblemaster come to mind) or aoe remove tokens. -I got shut down hard in one game where I couldn't for the life of me draw (relevant) Lands, and all the decks I played against seemed to have far more card draw than I did, in addition to more versatile mana generation. -Scrying seems good. Everybody scried. -Planewalkers seem good. Everybody had them. There's an Elspeth (edit: wrong Elspeth. Apparently there's 2) in the Constructed Event deck, which seems to synergize well with the rest of the warriors. Might be worth a buy (assuming it's not the only good, Standard Legal card in ther).

You could try testing on Cockatrice/MagicWorkstation for free against actual opponents but there's a learning curve with those programs. Also you can post your deck list here if someone has time to look at it, I haven't tested standard in about 2 weeks so I can't comment too much. Edit: Also fair warning since I know the draw of MtG is that you can build anything (within the format rules), your deck will be highly standardized to the archetypes if you want to be competitive. You're more likely to have 5-10 cards in your deck that you can customize to your taste and/or environment, but a majority of the deck is more or less fixed.

I hope this is basically a more focused version of the initial deck. Eventually once I have more games under my belt I intend to move it towards more of a Mardu midrange kind of deck, but for now I just want to play. It should help that apparently all the people I played against yesterday are both the most experienced and some of the best players in my local scene and normally FNM are a lot softer. So maybe I can pick up a win next week.

That's another reason why I was so surprised yesterday I won a game, it seemed the deck was full of 'fluff'. Not necessarily useless cards, but cards that didn't synergize at all with the rest of the deck. I turned the Event Deck (http://mtgsalvation.gamepedia.com/Khans_of_Tarkir/Event_deck) into this (http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/new-player-warrior-aggro/). Start practicing online, there's absolutely no reason to start picking up experience with Mardu midrange right now online before you take the deck to a FNM.

For the most part the deck played out pretty well and I could see playing it in the future with some changes. UB is probably better but UW is a lot more forgiving.

What else could the triple TBD GPs be ? They didn't announce any interesting reprints atm, but the presence of Etched Champion makes me think there will be a decent artifact theme. So, I'm around 100% sure Spellskite is in it, likely Pod, and I guess Opal. I also think they'll reprint tons of playable commons/uncommons in Modern, namely Visions, Probe, Bolt, and some Pod cards. I'd bet on Remand too. Pretty hyped for the GPs though, where I'll travel a few thousand kilometers just to drop because I opened a foil Goyf :p
