At first I thought Emrakul would reign supreme, but it isn't doing well online while Bant Coco and UR Thermo Alchemist are doing great. I got the RPTQ next week so I'm scrambling to find a deck to play. I've played BW control, GB Delirium, Temurge, Jund Delirium, and back on BW control. Still not sure if any of it feels good lol. There is no one deck that seems supremely well positioned at this point. Last week at standard BW control decks were my best match ups haha

So only 8 people showed up for the first Gameday yesterday... Sounds like a lot of people are on vacation/rather be outside cause it's summer, than sit inside and play Magic...
I ended up finishing in 2nd place losing in the final match to Green-Black Seasons Past. Felt like I could have won but was held to 4 lands in a long 1st match, and only saw 3 lands game 2. My friend also finished 3rd. He played the Seasons Past player in Round 1 losing in 3.
Overall pretty happy with the day looking forward to playing 2 more Gamedays today, though the competition should be stiffer.

looking at the scg opens - modern seems like a really fun format but the pricing is just kinda mind boggling for me.... I have some fetches since I played a lot of ktk standard but i don't think i have any other really "staple" cards. is there a particular deck that would line up well with the ktk through current block that I could slowly upgrade to a true modern deck?
Thanks in advance if anyone responds ^_^
In other news my mono-red deck is going to be my champion until my favorite dragon rotates out in a few weeks

Bant Eldrazi is the obvious answer for "a deck that banks heavily on recent cards", but that also has a lot of older staple cards that are a big drain on the wallet (manadorks, Cavern of Souls, etc.).
What's your budget and what kind of decks are you interested in? Tier 1 decks are naturally quite expensive, but Modern is a wide field and there are quite a few tier 2 decks that can perform quite well.

I guess I kind of identify as a red or black based player - those cards just interest me the most. Jund is like way outside of my price range but I've been looking at Zoo (goyf-less versions anyway) since I have Heaths/Foothills (+ a singleton mire) already and there may be some way to cobble something together. Maybe Burn? Idk. From what some guys at my lgs told me a little while ago it's possible to do fine on a local level with a less than optimal (but still following the general game plan) "tier 1" deck since they are so expensive.
As for budget I would guess something like.... maybe $50 to $100 added on to my existing card pool to start? I'm just not sure what that could even get me.

There are two archetypes that come to mind.
Death's Shadow Aggro is basiclly a suicide zoo deck that believes it doesn't matter how much damage you take so long as you kill the other person first. Comes in two flavours. Combo kill and Multi-colour zoo. You can probably run this with only the recent KTK Fetchlands, and the reminaing expensive cards are either manageable or are being reprinted (e.g. Inquisition of Kozilek is getting a reprint in Conspiracy 2).
The other archetype is Burn. Does basically what it says on the tin. The biggest cost in the deck will the Goblin Guides since they haven't had a reprint. Apart from that, cutting out the expensive lands (especially the Scalding Tarns!) will make the cost much more managable. Out of all the decks in Modern, Burn is probably the easiest to run without optimal lands since it's basically mono-red but runs a few other colours in the sideboard. If you're willing to have a more shaky sideboard, you can shave off even more cost. Sample list is here.

yea I can definitely cut some cost with trading some of the stuff I know I'll never use (hello Emrakul from prerelease). Thanks for the suggestions! I was watching the Death's Shadow deck on the SCG PI today and it looked pretty fun to play but I'll have to check availability of both lists at my local stores

Yeah I'm not going to go out and buy a list tomorrow, I just want something to perhaps build toward since it looks like I won't ever really see a dedicated burn deck be good in the Standard format (the UR deck is too wonky for me) which is something I always liked about Red I've basically just done prerelease events for like 18 months so it'd be nice to do something a bit more involved (and not have to constantly buy and rebuy new cards for each rotation)

Hey everyone. PucaTrade has just relaunched a new style site (needs a little work, but trading is good!)
If you havent heard of it before, it's a trading site that you can trade your cards, get points, and receive other cards from people with their "PP" currency. I've sent over $5,000 worth of cards and received soon to be $6000 worth.
If you havent signed up, use my referral link, from one TLer to another =D
mod edit - referral links are not allowed
The new site features all language trading, SP, MP, HP trading as well. "Package trading option" makes it really easy.
I'm a modern player looking forward to receiving some French and German singles =)
I would be glad to help anyone unsure about shipping items and the do's and dont's involved =)

Working on building Modern UG Infect at the moment... need about 6-7 cards and I'm done =) I've always enjoyed aggro--I've had modern Burn//Affinity before this. I've currently been playing a UB Control based brew that has put up good results against decks like Infect, Allies, Melira-Chord, etc. I've lost to several good decks like Burn (my deck is weak against aggro), Nahiri Combo (damn celestial colonnades//lightning helixes), and Jund, but I've since made changes to my deck and am finally getting to a solid build.
Anyone else playing Modern atM?

Play modern all the time UG infect is my deck. I personally think infect is one of the best decks in the format since they always have to respect the possibility of a quick kill even if you don't have it. If you play in a lot of local tournaments is always good to switch up what 75 you play, got to put in some spicy things so they never know what to play around.

Anyone following the Magic Story? The most recently released one ships Chandra and Nissa so hard.

Nice! I had already owned Spellskites, picked up Hierarchs for other endeavours, Gitaxian Probes for Delver etc, and had the fetchlands.. so kinda just went for all the little stuff on Puca next to build infect. Someone sent me 25 cards, all the Mutagenic growth, groundswell, vines, etc... Then, a few other people have chipped in to send me some of the other cards. I still need a few.
Do you use Wild Defiance at all? I'm curious as to the better match ups to use it in. I could google it, but hey.... I wanna hear it from someone personally =)
Also.. Twisted Image.. that card seems like it could be a lot of fun to use, and the card draw is great. I have a few of those to throw in as well.

I'm interested, I just don't have time now.

Pretty much me too. Would love to play more limited but don't ever have time to play. And when I do have time no one shows up to the shop.
