January 6, 2011, at 21:00 GMT (+00:00)-Tuesday, January 11th, 07:49 GMT (+00:00)
The Second Speed Demos Archive marathon is on the horizon, Dubbed "Awesome Games Done Quick," the marathon will start January 6, 2011, at 21:00 GMT (+00:00). We'll be playing through 100 popular games as quickly as possible while raising money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation, which focuses on research and education for preventable cancers.
That's right, 100 games. We're not cheating by picking 100 short games, oh no, epics like Chrono Trigger, Metroid Prime and Ocarina of Time are also being completed in times that could well blow your mind. The whole thing will be live streamed free with commentary by all the speedrunners there and it's set to be a blast! We've got special events planned like a BattleToads Race accompanied by Piano, an attempt at Blind Super Mario Bros and someone actually finishing Ghosts 'n' Goblins.
But what's special about this marathon? Well the main part is that it is being run by SDA, the premiere Speed Running Website on the internet that people in the know head to when they want to know what the fastest records for games are. SDA, like TL, is a hardcore niche website and all the speedrunners are very good at what they do. We're talking world-record times here! Who else could complete 100 games in 5 days? Check out the schedule to see what's planned! The stream runs all day and all night, delivering non-stop top speed running action. I will link to the stream page when available.
So why am I telling you guys this? Well, not only was the previous marathon Classic Games Done Quick an amazing watch but it was so good that I knew I had to be at the next one. I'm flying from London to DC just to take part in this and we, especially me, need your support! Tune in to the marathon and maybe make a few donations and tell your friends. I will be playing Bayonetta on Monday 10th Jan at 07:10 GMT (+00:00) so please tune in and do some shout outs for TL.net! I'll be wearing my TL Pony shirt for sure. Or Pajamas. It's quite late. (TL Pony Pajamas?)
The marathon started slowly last year when not too many people knew about it, but by the finale of Final Fantasy VI, we had thousands of viewers and took in over $11,000, most of which was in the last 10 hours. I hope you guys check it out. If people donate $207,540.06 to watch a bus drive slowly, I think we can should be able to get a great turnout.
I'd just like to thank TL.net for giving me permission to promote this event =D.
It's a very large undertaking. I know someone IRL with two runs on SDA (one since obsoleted), so I know what it's like. May the RNG smile on you all!
Personally I prefer seeing actual submitted speedruns, but this is still awesome. In a way, it's a little more exhibitionist, and a little less masochistic.
SDA is one of my favorite sites just because so many of the runs that get submitted are mindblowing. Having everything commentated by speedrunners has sold me on this event.
last year this was so amazing I watched almost all of it, only slept a few hours for the entire thing. to bad I won't be able to watch much of it this year as I have exams the 11th and I have lot of studding to do T_T
There's only about 14 hours left until this kicks off. I'm super excited for it. Last year's was fun, and it'll all be available to watch afterward if you miss it. I really recommend watching anything piano related. Pianotoads was a huge highlight from last year.
Also, obviously, it's for charity, which makes it even better. Unlike Flicky though, I doubt I'll be in chat--it gets a little too hectic for my tastes--it's like watching the old b.net attack videos when the channel would get super spammed by 37 some odd people trying to get a game. My brain can't handle it all .

Any recommendations of what to watch? I'm bored and could use something fun to watch.

Go watch the games that you played a lot in your childhood, or games that infuriated you.
You will be amazed at how thoroughly some of these "impossible" games can be destroyed.
I just heard them give a shoutout to tl.net on the stream. This pleases me greatly--it also proves that people here are generous. They are likely also collectively "The Man".

I'm already getting mad.
I'm going to go find a speed run of the water temple in the Ocarina of Time.
If anyone here's about a guy jumping out a window in Boston screaming something about "fucking Link" that's probably me.
I've been following his website ever since Halo 3 came out. He is the sole reason I started speed running random games including halo 3.
Major props for the guy sticking it out so far. I know how frustrating any halo game can get when things aren't going right, speed running or not. (For those that doubt this... Go play halo 2, just the first level on legendary on coop)

But then they are gonna skip something. I don't know the people, but I read that "myst" won't/can't do a specific run.
Myst was gonna last a 3 minutes, so hardly a save. Also it's on the last day of the marathon or was gonna be, and they only skipped it because they forgot to bring the disc! :p
It's a joy to hear a lot of TL shoutouts amongst the donations. I have donated twice now. Awesome stream also. Too bad that I can't watch flicky's speed run though.

Hm, I read that they changed the schedule, so no wonder they aren't "behind" anymore.

Yeah it's gonna be good. Then Pianotoads :D

This is pretty awesome, keep up the good work, guys.
I was watching this for a large portion of the day: Megaman sucked me in. I'd tune in again to see if Super Mario 64 is currently being played but I'm scared of getting sucked in again.

Agreed, Mani, Hot_Bid, Rekrul, R1CH are musts!
I would donate for this! :D
edit: Nazgul as well
Or what about Jinro, Ret, Nazgul, Haypro, HuK, Nony, TLO?
Personally I would favour the staff members , but the team it self would probably be more popular with other people. Whatever people want I will put some money behind :D

It'll probably be hard to bid for 7 character names, so we should figure out a few consensus picks.

edit: 1k for all names :O
I'm watching PL right now, so I'm not up to date on what's going on

2: also, I have ~$16 left on my paypal to donate
Well let's first figure out who we'll have on board and once we know the amount, we can decide how many names to get.

Right now:
emperorchampion TheMango Jibba
Uniden imo
Also, Castlevania bump! :D
Oh I'll chip in 5$ if we can agree on awesome names
Pokemon Yellow on right now, the runner is trying to pull off some really cool glitches. Fun to watch (as long as you have no knowledge of speedrunning Pokemon yellow already)
Hey guys! I'll be doing more commentary later so tune in!
If you pick a name for FF4 or Chrono Trigger to name after staff, let me know here and I'll start the donations! We shall leave a TL style mark on this. Ideas gogo!
Super Metroid being run right now. I've been waiting for this! Metroid games are some of the best games to speedrun because of the sequence breaking. And shinesparking is awesome too.
Hey guys, I asked flicky about doing Korean ceremonies after completing a level in Bayonetta and he said he'll consider it if there will be a lot of donations for that. So let's donate for the good cause and to see some Rock neck snaps!
Wow this OoT race is amazing to watch D: Woot for doing homework + watching people completely destroy the game I spent weeks playing by speed running through it lol
I am impressed! that race was so close with 2 players ending less than 30 seconds apart from eachother. Could've gone either way! Now SM64 120 star run I think!
Yeah, diggin' the cartoon graphics of Castle Crashers :D I will definitely be watching parts of your run, unfortunately class will interfere with parts of it.
Just a note, they are recording both streams and they'll be synced and uploaded sometime during the month. So if you missed anything (I had to sleep during their OOT race D=) we'll be able to watch it eventually. ^^
Flicky just did a great impression of the FBH dance on stream. Cant wait till the vods come out, will make an awesome gif to add the nada's body thread
This is seriously awesome as I am quite a fan of Speed Demos Archives, and a very adamant Speed Run enthusiast in general...very adamant, but more on that later.
It's over! Shout outs to the SC fans who updated those of us who were watching CT with who was winning in the GSL lol. Over 52k I'd say that was a successful marathon.
Hey guys! Thanks so much for the support! Seeing so many TL comments in chat and on donations was awesome, thanks a bunch for making Bayonetta the 40k game =D
I'll do everything I can to go back next year too, had a blast.

Thanks a ton for promoting this!! My weekend would have been bland without this event! :D Your FBH dance was pretty amazing btw :p
Does ustream put each continuous broadcast into single videos? That could be problematic if the stream wasn't regularly restarted after each game or hourly periods.
I'm also looking forward to the pokemon yellow vod :D I had to leave just when problems started arising when SMK realized venonat couldn't learn teleport

I don't think they are doing the vods through ustream. They said it would be a while before all the videos are uploaded because of syncing, formatting, ect. I would expect at least a month or two before they are all up (unless they speedrun that as well :p).
