DM3? DM6? Hours spent playing that game
Just wondering if anyone remembers playing Clan Arena and 1v1s
I was trying to remember all the clans back in the day and only some come to mind.
Clans: Clan GIB Ruthless Bastards Clan Unforgiven Dyscrepency doppelganger (.dg.) Negative Burn (nB) r3volution (r3v) Dark Requiem (]DR[) Silent Service (ss) Silver Surfers red abyss ([ra]) clan crossbones ([:x]) Versus (.vs.) the Stone clan (tSc) Clan Knightmare on a stick/dopplestick (/oas) Fire In The Hole (FiTH) Evil Genius (EG) Masters of Pummeling (MOP) Clan Zogar (zgr!) Deathstalkers (|ds|) Clan Kapitol (cK.) Reaperbots Faerie Beans (Local Toronto clan I think) Clan DNA The Forsaken
Edited: More Clans Zero Tolerance SIK Clan Southern Comfort (cSc|)
I remember Wombat from cs fame destroying on clan knightmare. I also played a lot with EG.Torn. I assume this was a different clan/organization than the current Evil Geniuses because I remember this being around 97 or 98(also the plural vs singular naming). I was a HPB(High Ping Bastard on a dial-up connection) on the Stone clan... I wished I had the ability to use the shaft like Torn who was a LPB(Low Ping Bastard on university connection) but I guess I held my own.
Nicknames I had: Bloodlust(wc2 inspired!),Bloody, onewing, demigod and Chronic

I played a lot of Quake (before QW came out), later QuakeWorld, but never was great at it. The people who play it these days are ridiculously good... There's things I really like about the game, but overall if I picked up a shooter now I might go for UT.
Ping really was overpowering in that game, even in QW, although you can be amazing at some things without it. I actually really enjoyed learning to compensate for ping, it's just a shame it wasn't effecting everyone equally. I really liked the CTF levels and grapple hook back in the day, and you could set up really sweet keys because switching was instant. Love the rockets of course, and the rest of the weapons are pretty so-so. I actually like doom's shotguns better, and the lightning gun is just cheezy, i'd rather see a moh style sniper. The nail guns are pretty stupid too. In fact I don't really like Quake's theme, but the multiplayer turned out awesome because the levels (especially the fan made ones) are so amazing in design, and of course the rocket launcher is just brilliant. I'd replace the nailguns with something like the flak gun, and maybe something like cs's mp5. Yeah that would be nice. I like how UT has alt attacks too.
But it's a shame a lot of those qw levels aren't seeing enough light of day, I think somem of the best deathmatch levels ever made, and I mean, dozens of them, are sitting there back in quake/qw... not to mention the original ctf...
|
haha ya! That what was wonderful about Quakeworld. The netcode improved the game so much that the ping difference didn't play as much of a penalty as in the original Quake. I actually played the original Quake as well.
I nearly forgot the Grappling Hook! That was revolutionary! I was an ID Software fanboy. Anything they released I wanted to master lol (which I did not). I remember Doom to Quakeworld... I stopped playing the Quake series after QW for Counter-strike and eventually Day of Defeat. I think you are right about the levels that were neglected. I haven't really felt a map that has made me feel as comfortable as the ones in Quakeworld.
I just remember being like 13 and wondering how some of those guys could hold up people with the lightning gun and rocket people out the dm3 window. Such timing haha it was nuts to watch.
I also remember alot of Future vs Fantasy servers, Front Line Force games (I was in a clan with Zofran who was a developer of FLF.) Poor guy passed away from a Leukemia relapse

Playing the original Quake online for many years has made every other FPS that I have ever played feel like they are terrible. This isn't because they are, per se, but they've got nothing on the original Quake.
I think the grappling hook has a lot to do with that. Grappling hooks took the skill and absolute ridiculous-ness to a whole new level--just one of the many things that allowed skill differences to have such a remarkable and unforgiving effect in Quake.
I wish original Quake servers were populated, nobody plays them anymore Quake Live just wasn't the same game...
|
Still the best FPS around, with easily the highest skill ceiling.
|
It's awesome. For anybody who is interested get the nQuake package. Unless there is some new package out there I'm not aware of? It has been a few years since I last played.
Unlike CPM or Warsow you can be punished for bunny hopping around too excessively because rockets are so powerful. Makes it very tactical like VQ3 whilst still being movement oriented. But I wish the community would move on to play on new duel maps already. I hate playing on DM4. There are some really good ones like vdm3 that should certainly see some playtime.
|
oh man, '96. i miss hanging on the ceiling of my base with the grappling hook, defending the flag with my rocket launcher and a strength rune. i guarantee everyone in this thread is OLDDDD
|
oh yeah i played FvF a lot, some player names i remember:
playboy (dude had 25 ping, it was revolutionary) EvilStar[RD] (on fvf servers) GreenGhost[HP] (clan High Ping) Sgt.Madman (in clan HP i think also)
i played as warDraGon or Hunter_D
|
I remember clan High Ping haha.
Ohh I guess I remember watching some Czm games when he was still playing. He was in clan Kapitol I think... and r3v. One of the best q3 players ever.
and if we got enough players I'd be up for a game or two no doubt in nquake woot!
|
I played tons of QuakeWorld, Q3, CPM etc.I used to play with a lot of the ]km[ guys.
Best FPS ever.
Being from Canada used to suck because getting a ping lower than 70 was so hard. On a good day my shaft was 30%
|
I think out of all the dm maps. I still remember the layouts of dm3 and dm6. All the other ones are lost lol.

haha Knightmare was basically the brother clan to the Stone clan. I remember so many games with the km guys. It sux cuz I can't remember anyone besides kilgore, wombat and gaijin. I can't think of anyone in the Stone clan besides orb (who i don't think could possibly be orb of sc2 cuz of age lol
I was like 13 when quakeworld was around and I am 28 now so I assume most are around the same or older
|
Still play it a few times every week, there's a decent number of people that still play it, most of them are in Europe though so ping still can be an issue.
The nQuake package mentioned above does have everything you need to get started w/ deathmatch (ffa, 1v1, 2v2, 4v4). However the skill ceiling can be pretty daunting as most everyone who plays now has a gotten ridiculously good at this game.
Also, best fps ever made.
|
QW, those were the days... played many TDM games on dm3. The feel and speed in that game was just awesome, the perfect FPS imo.
|
Oh yeah! I played a loooot of QW back in the day! Some friends and I started our own clan when we were in 7th grade or something, clan ]TTR[ - Time To Respawn! A few years later we won one of the DQL (Danish Quake League) seasons, I think it was in '99.
I actually started playing it a bit recently, just for fun.
Anyone remember Dag and Def's quake done extreme vids? + Show Spoiler + Sure brings back memories!
The danish clans I remember are; cn - chopstick ninjas pog - protectors of the old generation (you had to be over 30 or so to join afaik) tlw - the lone wolves
from other countries I remember euthanasia to be the biggest and best clan there was.
|
Clan Kapitol ftw. And O ya... Deathrow > Clan 9.
|
I played with RB Ruthless Bastards... DMOS (Deimos)... and later Clan Kapitol. Q1 Netquake 4v4 DM3 will always be the best fps experience.
Quakeworld introduced antilag and the physics of the game were never the same(you're not supposed to be able to jump from 1 side to the other in the Red Armor room on DM3... The movement and aim became more 'predictive' than 'reactive' if that makes sense.
|
I didn't play Quakeworld back in '96 (I was only 4 years old back then), but I did play QW in '01. Mainly Quake Team Fortress and Quake DM. I made some custom skins too.
|
Remember Clan 9. The clan that day[9] got his nick from. They were sponsored by the internet café called "9" in Stockholm. I'm not sure if day[9] got his nick from the quake players though. The internet café sponsored a lot of Starcraft players early on so that was probably where he got the nick from.
|
Clan 9 vs Deathrow was epic.
|
good times playing qw with 200+ ping when the 56k internet used to cost like 1,5 USD / h

I'm a year late to the party but I have a few clans and names for you to add to this list. This is great history, too much of it has been lost so I wanted to add some here. I was "Jerk" and I formed Clan Havoc with Integra and was later recruited into Clan Knightmare by Kilgore.
A few more of the top clans that should be on that list:
Clan Havoc - We came in 1st and 3rd in the T1 CTF tourney. I9 - Impulse 9 POSTAL Undead Smurfs - Great guys RevCo Nightbreed Clan 311 Deimos IHOS - International House of Spork XP - eXtreme Prejudice there are more in the link below
We used to play 4v4 pickup games on the old nQuake Bones servers. I spent a solid year or more on there I think just playing pickups. Those were really fun games and filled with guys that would go on to be some of the top players of that time.
First time I watched RuthlessBastards play, someone asked them their strategy for the match and it was "Run Around, Kill Shit, Don't Die!". Wisdom to live by.
If you are an old schooler you will probably really enjoy reading "This History of Clanring" which is still online, scroll down just past the history of RD:
http://www.clanreddragon.com/history.html http://www.clanreddragon.com/history.html
Great memories. If anyone found any links or old demo archives they would be cool to see.

Nice Jerk, REALLY appreciate the links and the refresher on names I forgot about Such good times on bones server.

Don't mean to bump such an old thread, but I was a long time quake player (not as good as many of the greats, but I could hold my own.) You guys missed a lot of great (or at least GOOD) teams from NetQuake;
EAST:
6fu - six feet under Elohim DOOM C0 / Orion - Clan Orion (I used to talk all sorts of trash to these guys, but I secretly wanted to join) Craft cR / REG - clan Regulator TGR - tiger hifi - high fidelity 1134 E5 - East 5ide pI - Poison Ivy HoP - House of Pain LR - Llama Rapers X4 - Xtreme 4 (i think?) DI - Damage Inc. X - Xtinction ? - Unknown Knights
WEST:
XBN - Xband LEX / L3X - Levenix (sp?) HDC - Happy Dragon Clan WA - Western Alliance ww - Water World (spin off of DY) bKz - Bikuestenzostorong (or whatever. Another DY spinoff) CnW - Clan North West (i think) WS4 - West Side 4ever PI - Clan PI PlanB - Plan B G2X - (don't remember what it stood for, though) SW - Something Wicked
|
Sorry to bump an old one... But WOW! This threat brings back some serious memories. Some of the old clan names still ring with me to this day... r3v, ]DR[, EG, cK, and Clan 311. Amazing times. I was the founder of Masters of Pummeling (MOP). It would be very nice to see a revival of the old Quakeworld community. I made a number good friends during those times.
-[MOP] Manowar
|
We should definitely arrange some TL 1v1 and quad tournaments.
|
I was a member of Clan Orion and Llama Rapers. Many years have passed when I bailed out of the Quake community after pursuing a life with my first car, girlfriend and drivers license.
If somebody has information of my old clan mates I am interested in contacting them.
|
Bumping because all of these clan names are so reminiscent of my highest peak of performance in online gaming. I started on DWANGO in Doom, kept progressively obtaining better internet through working at an Internet Cafe and attending college. I had many names, but probably if you played me in competitive you knew me as pole or ndian, I also was a member of DR and a slew of other top clans, and then went on to play Team Fortress as, Fanon, for Clan Megadeath and prior to [M] was also a founding member of Braveheart.
I created multiple other clans as well, but was slowly losing my time that I could focus on the game once Quake2 arrived, so QW slowly started fading out DM2/DM4/DM6 1v1s, and the most competitive 4v4 team based map ever created in DM3. I knew of the netquake clans and recruited quite a few of their players into DR, before I eventually started playing with Led, Antha and Hall (who we plucked from DR) under a clan that will remain nameless. I knew of so many players, and can readily name them. My friend, Jonathan who most of you know as Fatality, and I hung out in HS and we eventually lost touch because of his fame (of which I think he deserves every bit of).
I'm just going to start naming off players in case any of them read this starting with myself: Fanon/pole, followed by; Drak, Threat, NaTas, Hallway, Rednight, the Pon+iff, Animal (rip), Scatterblak, glock, Crockme, lava|goddess, MikeJ, gollum, Papercut, Anthasux, Ledbetter, jmagic, Zith, Mobius, Rosencrantz, CrazyIvan, Mfaces, |2|, Cyberknight, Sniper, Blue, Thread, Ibtar, CleverCleverRat, Falconeer, Sporb, gemini, Windex, Pistdov and countless others...
Some good clans were already named in this thread some of which I played against, others which I played for or founded. I remember their tags more than the actual clan names but thanks for starting this thread all those years ago, OP; it's funny that someone like me nearly ten years on can rebump it and add to the nostalgia. Ahh man, I miss this time of my life and how amazing the game was especially in the QW.exe client. Just so many good memories...probably my best of which was me personally, going 99-0 against the BALL clan from Ball State university (you guys sucked). I stopped at the mercy kill of 100 so as to not completely humiliate them even though Crockme was urging me on to go get that last one.
|
If anyone is looking to dip their toes in the QW water again then www.nquake.com is still the place to get the game and then there is the global (EU-centric really) Discord on discord.quake.world or the North American on discord.usquake.world.
Both EU and NA communities are fairly healthy considering the age of the game with recurring tournaments etc. There are 4on4 draft tournaments starting shortly in both EU and NA for example.

Holy cow, dude!! I remember you (Fanon)!! NO WAY!! Hope you're doing well out there. I'm playing Planetside 2 right now - dated, but still a lot of fun. HawkmoonHated (was in Gothic Terror with Cabless and I) is in there as well. Def remember almost all of those names - Surfdog and Plaguebearer spring to mind as well, and all the guys in Clan Oski.
You (and any other TF guys) can always get me at NashvilleBassist@gmail.com
Peace, love, etc!
