Poly is bad -> bad, you can't berserk demons ... basically the only things that you have to watch out for are haste and cloning. But you get irresistible sleep/paralyse/confuse effects to let you stab. It's still probably not nearly as good as needlestabbing though.

After getting further than I have in a while (Lair: 4, yeah I suck), all I have to say is--fuck teleportitis.
In retrospect quaff-IDing potions that deep in and getting mutation maybe wasn't that smart. Or at least, I should have remembered to put on my amulet of resist mutation before quaff-IDing.
And for some reason, Trog kept gifting me slings, even when short blades was my highest skill...

I've stopped early quaff-id'ing, not just because mutations are dangerous, but also because cure mut is too valuable to risk wasting. Early game I use all ID scrolls on pots and jewelry that doesn't ID itself. It's safe to quaff any unknown pot once you know mut and cure mut, so long as you have curing to stop strong poison or rot.
Scrolls are virtually risk-free to read id, though I make sure the level is cleared before doing so. Dont want to get teleport and land next to sigmund and grinder.

Sigh, right when I continued my game, I got surrounded by way too many killer bees out in the open and died.
New game now (MiFi): I'm in the Lair. I don't have any good weapons as of now (battleaxe and a war axe (chop, rElec)) and I found a five-headed hydra. The only way I would be able to kill the hydra I think is to use wands. I have 3 unidentified wands (whoops), wand of cold, wand of frost (zapped: 6), wand of fire (zapped: 9). On the other hand, I'm pretty sure hydras are faster than me and I dont see an exit that would allow me to avoid it. I do have 2 scrolls of tele and 1 scroll of fog. Would it be a better idea to avoid the hydra with tele (or fog?) right away or try to kill it with wands, and if its not possible, use tele ASAP?
Also, is there a way to make it so that after you finish autoexploring one level, to make it so that you can autoexplore the level again?
Scroll of immolation killed me once when I was read-IDing with half health xD

Hydras are not faster than you (unless there is water around, or you are a naga or worship chei), and you can kill it with the wand of cold (or fire if that has enough charges). If it is uncomfortably close go up some steps and then down another set to try to find it farther away next time.
If you want to re-explore a level you can forget the level map by going into the map (X) and then using control-f.

How quickly should I be sinking skill points into Evocations? Is it just a case-by-case basis where I just level it when I get an item where I need ranks in Evocations to get a reasonable success rate?
Same question with Stealth I guess. Do I just hand-wave it based on whether I can reliably sneak past enemies?
|
If you worship Nemelex you want to get to evo ~15-16 reasonably quickly so you can guarantee power 2 effects from legendary decks.
If you get a good rod (especially inacc) then raise evo for rod power.
A few levels are good for evocable blink/rage/tele, and if you plan on using a staff of channeling/crystal ball of energy/Wucad Mu for restoring MP lategame you will want lots of evocations (well, cboe at least demands a lot, channeling is usable with less).
Evocable invis is almost always fine with 0 evo since you can just back up one step, activate it, and then walk in to stab after you finally manage to succeed. It's not worth the large investment if you're not stabbing. Evocable lev is also similarly not often something where you need to succeed first try.
In general evo is usually a decent place to put extra xp but not a pressing concern unless you are with Nemelex.
For stealth if you are stabbing you should raise it a lot (but you should also be an enchanter so get invisibility online very quickly). If you are not stabbing you just pick up stealth whenever you don't need anything else. If you are a naga get a few levels here and there as you go so you can avoid waking up stuff when you first see it.

so i started playingthis 2 days ago mainly cause i had a huge hangover so bf3 etc were way to exhausting.
game is damn addicting and so damn hard at times. my kobold berserker (well my 6th one) now got pretty deep. cleared lair and orc. felt super strong so i went down elf. first 4 levels were no problem with my +4/+7 antimagic quickblade evrything died quick. but damn lvl5 is a totally different world.some rooms with 30 enemies, could almost clear one, had to teleport away and barely escaped. wanted to finish atleast that one room and suddenly i get banished and land in the abyss. didnt die yet but god it sucks down there.
so instead of seeing my kobold maybe die i decided to try some other classes.
first one was high elf wizard. magic is fun (but is there another way to cast fast other then going z -> enter-> enter for evry damn shot of magic dart?) but damn did i die fast and often in totally random ways where i could do NOTHING against. examples: go down stair, spawn near a enemy, it does one hit, poisns me and while i could get away the poison just killed me. another one i went down stairs and instantly get killed in one round. add about 5 times where unlucky blinks/misses killed me. also whats so amazing about meph cloud? sure sometimes it instakilled enemies but more often then not enemies resisted, the clouds did almost nothing or it plain failed. was my skill too low?
next one was a spriggan enchanter. well in short, hex resists > me, uniques > me, ghost of one of my kobolds with a electro dagger >> me. how do you fight uniques etc with that class? or do you just try to avoid evrything dangerous with it?
overall had much fun but also a ton of very frustrating moment with that game. still its amazing how great it still is. the gamedesign is just great.

Personally I think lots of players overrate it, especially on characters who kill thing with spells (since using 3 MP on meph means you have 3 MP less for your actual damage) but it's still a good way to shut down stuff with ranged attacks, at least early in the game. It's really good if you're a troll or something though.

The biggest strength of being a spriggan is that you don't have to fight unless you want to since you are so fast (there are a few enemies that are still faster, but not many). SpEn in particular can just be 2 spaces away, try to use ensorcelled hibernation, and if it fails you just back up and try again from complete safety.

Tournament starts in about 30 minutes!
Also I just won the new Zig Sprint (it's up on CDO trunk, don't think CAO has it yet) as a HO of Ely (HOFi, but the Fi didn't matter). Ely is pretty fun there, you get to start with 4* piety (sacrifice the ammo stacks to get to 3*, then the demon weapons + obsidian axe afterward) and greater pacification is a net piety gain because of increased piety growth in sprint. I tried this twice; the first time I got two rods of inaccuracy early on and just inacc'd everything to death except for using pacification as a smite-targeted way to kill stuff (I also got rod of ice and venom and an abjuration rod). I then got a panlord zig:27 and ended up crashing the game when I tried to blink with about 50 panlords in view. I just assumed I died so I quit when I reloaded.
Second time I only got one rod of inacc and I got it later (I also got rod of ice and rod of warding eventually), but pacification is enough to get you pretty far. Things got rough a couple times near the end since my main method of killing dudes only had about five shots before it had to recharge, so I used a lot of wands and pacification. I pulled a legendary vitrification card at one point, so the entire map became transparent ... this led to some interesting situations but I think on the whole it made it easier. The toughest thing was an ice zig:26 as I was running low on food and consumables. I had skipped zig:25 by dragging everything to the bottom-left then running through it while hasted and invisible, but then zig:26 put me in kind of a bad spot. I turned on Ely protection and ran to the exit as fast as I could before my haste wore off, and after getting life-saved twice I made it. Zig:27 was an undead zig which proved to be not terribly hard, though I almost ran out of food. It's pretty fun and worth a try.
Chei seems to be the easymode way to go (you just slouch everything), Jiyva is probably pretty interesting, and TSO is probably really good if you get a way to recall (preferably a rod so you can use Maxwell's). Nemelex might be fun too.

Where do you find out what the nemelex' choice combo is?

So is anyone else finding CAO to be really sluggish today?
|
yeah CAO has been bad, and I place the tiniest amount of blame on my 10+ pre-lair deaths on the lag. I've been playing so poorly, combined with terrible rng luck. gnoll packs with halberds and nets on d:2, grinder on d:2, etc.The HOGl I've got is facing the nastiest lair, never seen so many elephants and death yaks outside of floor 8.

Crate, I think you should stream yourself playing, with commentary. I would love to watch.

You know you can spec games in client or on webtiles too?

Myopia, what's your username on CAO? I've dropped into crate's and beef's games before, but I don't know if I've seen you.

Myopia is eeviac.
CAO was laggy earlier because it was busy, I think. It'll likely be a bit slower than usual for the duration of the tournament, but now that the initial rush is over it shouldn't be too bad.
I managed to snag the third win overall in the tournament with an MfSk of Fedhas (in my first game). At the moment TL is the #3 team overall (I expect we'll drop to #4 by the end of the tournament but let's shoot for the top five for sure!)
Maybe someday I'll record myself playing crawl, but probably not at least until after the tournament is over.
Oh, the Nemelex's Choice combos are on the tournament front page: http://seleniac.org/crawl/tourney/12a/overview.html

So, on my KoBe, I've got:
the +3,+7 whip of Psoz (weapon) {pain, rC+ Str+3}
How good is this actually, and as a general note, how good should a weapon be for me to consider using it over Light Blades?
|
GL TeamLiquid in the tourney!
MiFi: I just got gifted an +10, +0 executioners axe of freezing. Is this weapon good enough to use my scrolls of enchant weapon on or should I wait to see if I get anything better? (I'm on Snake:3)
Other weapons I have: the hand axe of the Pyrrhic Victory (quivered) {god gift, flame, rN+ SInv} the +3,+11 Wrath of Trog {god gift, antimagic} the cursed +9,+1 war axe "Stric" {god gift, chop, rElec} the cursed +8,+1 broad axe "Avvourph" {god gift, drain, rPois rC+}
Are any of these weapons worth keeping in my inventory? (I have couple rings that provide resists in my inventory as well (rC+, rF+, rN+, rPoison), so do I need to keep the weapons that provide the same resists?)
I also have the +11 crystal plate armour of Midwinter (worn) {rF+ rC+ SInv Stlth++}. Will I still be able to go into spellcasting effectively with this armor (I plan on keeping this one). Should I also use my scrolls of enchant armor on this?
Finally, why does Oka keep gifting me normal caps/hats?
