Eating rotten chunks is ok but doesn't totally make up for it. It's hard to wear armor and most of their stuff trains slow except for fighting. It seems more like a challenge/fun race but... very challenging. That's why you go hunter instead of berserker. Berserking takes too much food, and this lets you pick a better god and take some spellcasting (Deflect missiles etc..) later on

Still new as hell to these rogue games, but damn fun times. The game lasted 00:37:49 (6441 turns). Actually, the berserker god likes it when you blow up spellbooks. He should grant you a power that lets you do so.

Ah thank you, so keep spell books, so i can burn them at a later date, but im guessing theres no point in having any other magic stuff, since im all short sword/dodge, no magic. While im here, what would be an easy spellcaster to try out?

Mephitic Cloud makes early game so much easier, its basically fungal growth but instead of stunning it confuses the enemies. Awesome! thats very useful info, cant wait to spend my friday trying this out. Thanks very much.

(It could be abused if you wanted to save really good books and switch away from Trog later) As for spellcasters, your background doesn't matter nearly as much as your species/deity, since you can eventually learn all of the spells with any character. It mostly just determines your starting spells. Spriggan is a pretty easy race to play since they have insane movespeed, otherwise I guess a Deep Elf for the aptitudes. Wizard and Fire Elementalist I think are the easiest starting backgrounds for a Conjurer-type (Conjurer can be good, but it would suck for a Spriggan, and could be difficult for a newer player to choose how to skill up and aim their clouds). Also, you could try a Summoner, they are fairly straightforward.

Personally I would consider at least DrFE and NaFE easier than DEFE (and also for most of the rest of the "mage" backgrounds). HOFE and HOEE are also pretty fun and are good for trying a heavy-armour "reaver"-type character but figuring out what to do with those is a bit more complicated.

Now the knowledge bots only mention a hard time reading scrolls, detecting traps, memorizng spells, etc... but nothing game-breaking for a wizard. They mention nothing about increased spell failure. Given that I have some really good mutations, if find a potion of cure mutation should I drink it to get rid of blurred vision? or keep them all? edit: also, one of the good mutations is clarity of mind, which seems extremely good given that I like to cast mephitic cloud at my feet all the time...

Blurry vision can be pretty saddening. It's not game-breaking per SE but being unable to detect traps, and having a failure chance on scrolls can both kill you. If the only good mutation you got was the +1 dex I'd wipe it for sure, especially if you're no longer evolving.

If spellbook-finding seems to be a problem, consider worshipping Sif Muna if you haven't committed to anyone yet. If you hit max Piety (******), you'll occasionally get granted spellbooks full of spells you don't know.

Just play extremely cautiously, and don't fight centaurs? To be honest, as a FE your best defense is a good offense. Centaurs should die to 1-2 fireballs, or an orb of destruction as you walk around a corner. You should also try to pick up a buckler and get shields to 5 as soon as possible.

These are super secret spells because they aren't listed in the Z menu; you cast them with hjklyubn only. Also they have a 100% success rate at any skill level. Ah, for my level of skill, all three of those summons fail occasionally, and sometimes I accidentally cast "summon start running into blackspace" or "summon stairdive", or even "summon double stairdive" instead. Any advice?
