Vaults is a lot more challenging with the guards. Also beware of deep troll earth mages that cast dig and LRD.

mmhh played some more. dungeon,spider and vaults cleared. vaults 5 was okish with the cleave but shittons of ranged guys ,stupid tengu reavers and mark made it annoying to do. also seems gold dragons are more rare but one of the 2 i killed dropped a hide so all good.
did forest also for the first time. liked the flavor of the last floor (the spriggan fort), spens as enemys were cool and treants interesting. but evrything was too weak at that point to pose a threat ,still spriggans AEs burning down their own forst was fun ~
checing new abyss now. its basicly just dive down and grab rune?
oh also seems like my v:5 was bugged. there were 2 silver runes ~~
/edit fuck abyss. i dont know if the trunk version is bugged but i just wasted way over 1 hour rl time and over 15 k turns (like 7 of them on abyss 5) without the rune. also the permanent "stuff spawns evry 5-10 right next to you" is plain annoying. old abyss you could atleast sometimes reg up, here just more and more stuff spawns out of thin air. pretty much bore/rage quitted, when i continue to play ill just take the next way out. if its not bugged and intended like that then then i dont know what they were thinking. (btw i leveld from 25 1/2 to 27 till i reached abyss 4. so i killed enough to lvl from like 23 to 27 by now.)

I never really liked abyss even pre-change, but here's some advice about new abyss: the rune only spawns in abyss 3-5, and rune spawn rate is higher as you go deeper. The monsters are a little harder but mostly infinitely more annoying than old abyss. New abyss is really really easy if you are an ash worshipper of course since you can avoid monsters with ease.
I generally don't go for the abyssal rune, even if i'm going for more than 3 runes. If you're already on abyss 4, you should be able to find exits basically at will.

DDHe, PDA, can cast Haste and LRD, 9/8 elec battleaxe at min delay, defenses are 35/22/0, 39/22/0 when buffed.
I've cleared everything but abyss, tomb, hell branches and pan.

You should be able to do fine in Pan. Hell is a lot harder, and Tomb can be hard or easy depending on if you know what to expect. Ideally you'd have a holy executioner's axe but it's not necessary. I would go to Pan and take it slow, fight things one at a time. Item spawn is decent in there so it's not like you have to worry about burning all your food.

Axes now "cleave" all enemies around you except the tile directly behind you. Vaults is now only 5 floors deep (final floor basically the same) and has several distinct types of Vault Guard, each with scary powers. Abyss now has "floors" you can move between using stairs. The rune is only on floors 3-5. Each floor is still infinite, and finding stairs is rare. The deeper you go, the stronger the monsters, and also the more likely you find an exit or rune. Rune starts appearing on Abyss:3. Abyss:1 is still scary for weak players. Abyss has new, scary monsters. Conjurers now have a book that has pure conjurations from level 1 through 5, without elemental-schooled conjurations. Beough and Yred now let you recall dudes across levels. Vehumet has had a big change. no longer gifts books, but instead "offers" you spells that you can memorize based on your level, aptitudes, and skills trained. Only conjurations, no summoning. No more Secret Doors. Summons don't attack outside of your LoS any more. Stalker and Priest are removed. If you are an orc, whenever you see an Orc Priest you can convert to beogh on the spot. Berserker can pick starting weapon. Levitation, controlled flight, and flight are all rolled into one spell now: flight Sludge Elves are gone 3 new races >Djinni-- non-living, rf+++, rc-, mp and hp are the same thing, "essence". no hunger, instead get contam from hunger. weird and op. >Lava orc-- orc of fire. Gets swiftness and burns nearby enemies when in danger. op >Gargoyle - like a tengu, but Earth and AC. low hp. No more Traps and Doors skill, game just treats your skill as XL / 3 Contam chunks instead just give 1/2 nutrition, no chance of nausea (yeah!) Insects can't be pacified any more Scroll of Unholy Creation replaced with Scroll of Summoning, which casts Shadow Creatures.

Oh, I forgot one thing. 50% of the time now instead of Crypt you get something called Forest which has spriggans and scary stuff in it, but not undead themed. Tomb spawns in there still I'm pretty sure.
lair branches are like this: >Slime >one of Swamp or Shoals >one of Spider or Snake
Shoals is like swamp but beach themed instead of icky themed

Okay so I went and added the trunk repository to my apt and downloaded trunk. When you start it up it throws a bunch of errors about missing files, also inventory colouring is broken.
does trunk just do this these days or is it confused with old files in ~/.crawl or what do? I guess I can just play stable buuuut...
edit: ...then some guy on irc fixed it so it's okay. Don't bother posting.

new abyss was biggest pile of shit ive encountered in dcss atleast in my trunk version. monster spawn right next to you evry 5-10 turns and 15k turns (half of them on abyss:5) with no rune.
rest is quite awesome.

Honestly I think the Abyss is the dumbest design decision in DC:SS, by far. I can't think of anything else less fun, less interesting, and more annoying.

Agreed. I would gladly take a "sacrifice 10 max hp" or something just to be able to leave it and not run around for 10 minutes waiting for exit to spawn.

I don't think I particularly liked old abyss, which was "tons of fluids, extreme boredom, occasional neqoxec, occasional greater demon"
Although the new abyss monsters seem specifically designed to be as annoying as possible, at least the abyss itself looks nice.

edit: ...then some guy on irc fixed it so it's okay. Don't bother posting. To anyone else with this problem, what happened is this: you are using an old rcfile. Between 0.10 and 0.12 sometime the rcfile got two big changes.
1) The default rcfile became completely blank. No more includes is the big one.
2) Options that used to use "=" to append to a list no longer do. Instead you use "+=" to append or "^=" to prepend. This broke your item colouring since you had an option that used "=" to append and the game instead interprets that as eliminating all item colouring except that one line.
