I guess that is what I'm doing). I've read and been told by several people that this is a horrible idea, because duelists are currently terrible at HC, and I'm basically asking for frustration. I played for like 20 min and got killed by the Hellrake thing (I was busy chatting, oh well), and I'm wondering if I should give it a real go or try something else. I'm pretty experienced with Diablo-esque games.
Duelist is pretty much the class that appeals to me the most. I'm kind of interested in the shadow, but that is what my brother is playing, so I want to do something different. The ranger seems meh. I'm not interested at all in the other classes. Has anyone here successfully done a duelist on HC and could give me some advice? I have no problem going slow and using a sword/board and switching to ranged when necessary; I just want to play this class. So any build/playstyle advice would be great, even if I have to build a little tankier than I would on non-HC.
Am I retarded for even trying? Should I just play a different class? Honestly, I might just go back to D3 if I can't do a duelist, as that is the only class that really interests me at this point.
i won't repeat the arguments against going duelist in hardcore. there are more then enough threads about this topic. i just wanna ask: why do you care so much about a "class" in a game where every "class" has access to the same skill tree and skill gems? and which passives are so good for you in the duelist tree that you would do a sword and board duelist, instead of starting on a better position in the passive tree with a different class.
I tend to really like the dex melee classes in rpg type games I play. I could do a marauder, but I don't generally like the pure strength characters.
As far as what skills I want in particular, I don't know. I'm starting to think this game isn't so much for me as it seems most of the enjoyment is derived from theorycrafting and planning builds, not as much playing the game. The action, from what I've played and seen, is less satisfying to me than D3 (not trying to turn this into a d3 vs poe post), so I'm trying to pick a class that fits closest with the playstyle I like (at least as advertised). The duelist just seems to be the worst class right now, and maybe I should just wait until they polish the game more and make the classes (starting) more balanced.
There is no specific build that I'm dying to do, because I haven't even gotten that far.
Edit: I should mention I'm not a huge min/maxer. While I enjoy doing solid builds, especially if I can customize them to my preference, I'm not going to spend hours (or even minutes) pouring over spreadsheets and fine tuning builds so I can farm 10% more efficiently. That is just not how I enjoy these types of games. Again, this seems to be geared more to that type of play, so maybe it isn't for me.
Dualist is not worse then other melee classes. What is worse is going swords and dual/double strike and Cleave. But GGG promised melee buffs in next patch.
BTW, you dying to Hellrake happens with any class. Actually ranged people die more because his main weapon Ice Spear does more damage at larger distances.
Also, all this "disbalance" won't be felt at least until Act 3 Cruel (unless you are summoner where you will feel it a lot in Act 3 normal).
Ok noob endgame question, you can only go in and out of the map as much as you want?? What if I have full inventory of gear and want to stash some before getting more

On February 12 2013 20:35 Mattes wrote: Well the question is how much useful stats do you lose? How easy do you farm Docks? How easy is an equal map for you with your normal gear?
I farm Docks with relative ease in 3-4 MF-pieces. Just yesterday i did a yellow lvl66 map with burning patches, equilibrium-debuff, double bosses and some aditional fire-resist.
Used 2 pieces (head, andvarius-ring) and it was no problem at all. I lost about 400 ES (due to ES-witch i dont care that much about life) and about 30-40 res overall.
What level are you?
And thanks for the answer Tennet! Is there a list of the best properties of a map? Like whats so good about the map being a maze? I'm about to do my first one today solo just to try it out, and not sure if I should reroll those stats on my map

Found a chest with 6 sockets, not all linked and would get 7 jeweller orbs for selling to vendor. Is 6 sockets really rare or something?
And another question. Found a Chain Gem and how does that differ from Fork when using Split Arrow? It will give a few more "forks", but costs alot more mana and things die fast enough anyway. Does Chain have some other benefits?
Thanks.
I sell 6 socket items for 7 jewelers to vendors. 7 jewelers is almost 2 fusions which is worth 2 alchemy. So unless you can get through trade 2 alchemy or more don't bother. And I am not sure who would pay more for 6 sockets but no links item. Maybe if it as 6 socket and 4L or if it end game base item you could get more.
When 5L were trading for 10+GCP it was cheaper to fuse one off a six socket than it was to buy one. Now a 6 socket is worth good moneys only if it is very high item level. You might be able to get more than 7 jewelers for a low level map one, but I'm not sure that is worth the effort.
SC2 and D3 spoiled the shit out of me. Every single name I've ever used is taken -- even the obscure ones that never usually are. I hope the new age naming conventions that Blizzard is spearheading catch on to the rest of the gaming industry.

I had to use a diff language to get a name I could use. My standard, Xinder same as TL name, was already taken. Went to just converting words into latin. I made a Templar and used the latin Ordinis for his name. Means Order in Latin so it seemed appropriate for a Templar.

Yeah, I'm not upset about dying to hellrake, I was in the middle of pming someone. I figured he was sort of hard anyhow.
If what you guys are saying is true, and they are just currently a little gimped (by about 3 levels) then I'll give it another chance. Just some of the things I've read made it seem like the class was unplayable in HC (this might be from the extreme min/maxers, though).

It's from extreme minmaxers, basically. Long story short is that in HC survival and hit-accuracy (for physical weapons) are important. Marauders have immediate access to massive amounts of HP, then resistances, then the trade keystone of 100% accuracy for 0% crit chance, while Rangers have immediate access to evasion and accuracy. Duelists though basically have a bunch of garbage attack speed nodes at the start, so they're forced to either take those, or take the stat nodes on the side to "join the rest of the world," so to speak. Once you get past that, and then live through the first Act or so, you'll end up at a level (20s) where you'll find very little difference with other classes... except for those damn starting nodes. Hence the ~3 level disparity. As a result, people "don't see a point" in running Duelist because you're essentially throwing away 3 levels for "no good reason," as no one actually crosses the starting Duelist nodes, ever. Builds that cross between the strength side and the dexterity side notably follow the bottom-most line...
Also RIP my 60 Witch, died to the pirates in A1 :[ Damn Flickerstrike...
Actually Byrr, who used to be one of the top 2 or top 1 player in HC before dying about a week ago has a build (ek shadow) that ends up crossing over to the duelist health and defensive nodes.
I've seen a YT video about Chris Wilson making a presentation, he was talking about Items in PoE and compare to other games, for example he compared WoW in a way that there are 19 Item slots in that Game, they didnt like that because if you get 1 item upgrade u dont really notice it, they want you to notice it, thats why they dont have a lot of item slots.
Does any1 have the Link or know what im talking about? I cant seem to find it, I'm pretty sure that it was linked in this Thread too :x damn I cant find it :<
