Take more life over more damage.
Can't hit if you can't live.

Though I'm sure you could do a character which just gets general spell dmg or melee weapon dmg without focusing on something, but that wouldn't be that good I suppose.

Is there a viable Frost-based character?

Though I'm sure you could do a character which just gets general spell dmg or melee weapon dmg without focusing on something, but that wouldn't be that good I suppose. What's a good spell to aim for? Is there a viable Frost-based character? I think all frost spells are sort of viable, my favourite one would be Freezing Pulse but all can work, you just need to know how. A beginner tip would also be that you can level all the gems without drawbacks, meaning if you have more gems than you need, the gems you use won't level slower. They level all at the same (full) speed. You should also get gems in your 2nd weapon set, those level as well. At the start Ice Nova is really, really strong, so I'd advice using it if you go for a Frost based build. It becomes somewhat weaker over time but can still be used at end game if you got good gear. While leveling a caster +1 Cold/Fire/Lightning gem weapon is also damn strong, so if you don't find one, then create one through vendor recipes. For a +1 Cold gem weapon that would be selling a magic Wand/Sceptre + Sapphire ring and an Orb of Alteration (so you should be able to do one at around lvl 10-12 when you find/buy a Sapphire ring). The full list of those is found here.

But the other lines you got are quite good. To be honest, PoE is way too deep to just give one line of acvice to beginners. Just don't let the depth discourage you and keep having fun learning the game.

You shouldn't use good orbs (alchemy chaos fuse divine exalted) but transmutes and alterations should be used liberally (but be sure you are making good use of them). You will need some to roll maps when you get there, but being out of these orbs isn't a bad thing. Knowing how to craft efficiently will speed up your leveling which will lead to more profits later on in the game. I wouldn't bother with the recipe until you can find your ideal 3L at a vendor (typically you'll find it by level 30 if you're diligent), although I normally level flameblast so it is imba enough that you don't need +1 early on.

1. Don't craft, can't be emphasized enough 2. Learn vendor recipes, some of the equip recipes are useful (http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Vendor_recipe_system) 3. Use poe.trade. (Buy a goldrim, it's great helmet for leveling). 4. Also masters aren't worth doing until lvl 50 or so, so merciless 5. Keep your stash organized. I like to do a page for currency, a page for gems, then pages of equips I might use or are valuable. 6. Look in the guild stash. It's mostly junk that I would like to take out and vendor for alts but it's too much of a hassle, but honestly some of it might be decent for beginners

On a different note, how much ehp and dps do you roughly need to do Obas Cused Trove safely? Let's say perfect roll. http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Oba's_Cursed_Trove

Don't be ashamed to outright skip dicey mobs / packs. Saw a lvl 74 MFer rip a 5-link Shavs to living blood on a lvl 67 map. "I can handle it." Famous last words. Abaxoth is another bad one and sprinkler totems are also terrible. Also, big skellies/vaal hammer dudes with powerful crits etc. Other than that if you need any item upgrades its always fine to start picking up good blue bases or even transmuting whites. A blue chest with decent health and one resist is way better than a yellow one with a bunch of low rolls and useless stats.

Over prepare. And if you're prepared, stick to the plan damn it. That one is for me... Been attempting HC "seriously" lately, had a plan for cruel dominus (I usually die a bunch of time to him and don't give a damn since it's SC). Played summoner, had daresso's shield for lvl 54 and necromantic aegis. Went in at lvl 52 because I got impatient. Zombies died too fast, had to run frantically all around to get corpses, got into a pack a blue, and ripped. Doesn't mean the plan would have worked, but all I had to do was stick to it damn it.... At least I didn't rip the shield ^^ Btw while we're at it, and as I'm trying the same stuff soon, would it make a difference ? Counting on the spellblock on low life, but low life may be too late for my zombies ? What do you guys think ?

There's just too much nuance to know in the beginning. The right combination of gears and skills is everything and you won't even know how to appropriately build them cause you couldnt even imagine such a possibility when you don't know certain things and concepts exists. It's pretty much faceroll till merc piety/dominus so the most important thing when you're starting off is to get experience. You can build a proper char after that if you wanna push further than merc piety/dom
