Fighting in the 80s was a useful tool for protecting skilled players from being targeted. You want to run Gretzky? Cool, but that means Semenko is going to be collecting your teeth. It was a deterrent to some of the tangential crap that has no business in the game other than to spoil it. The same cannot be said for today's version of fighting. Because of the way the rules work, fighting no longer works as a deterrent because you can't take an instigator penalty. So fighting servers no useful purpose - it's just a distraction. The only guys doing it on a regular basis are useless hockey players who have no other contributing skill other than the ability to wrestle with an equally useless hockey player for a few minutes before falling to the ice. It accomplishes nothing. If fighting had a purpose, a guy like Matt Cooke would be getting beat up a lot more. It's funny that we're talking about this on a StarCraft website given that people are always talking about "growing ESPORTS" or "ruining ESPORTS." I'm a guy who is interested in growing the game of hockey and I worry about how all of this unprofessional conduct makes the sport look to its potential audience. If I didn't grow up with it, it'd look like a joke to me. You don't see this shit in anything else that dares call itself professional. At the very least, they should do what the WWE did and brand it as an 'entertainment' sport as to stop the confusion =P. How many people here find that the most entertaining hockey played each year is the IIHF U20 tournament after Christmas? When you watch it, how much time do you spend missing fighting? Yeah, I agree with you on the fact the fighting has changed, it is based around a lot of lousy players, but you still get fights like back then from time to time. When Todd Bertuzi dropped the gloves with Shae Weber that was an old time fight in defending one of your star players and sending a message for the entire series(after that the series has been pretty much calm in regards to dirtyness). The TSN World Juniors are not that popular anywhere else other than Canada because of TSN hyping the shit out of it and going wow Canada rocks after we clobber lesser teams by a large margin and then lose in the playoff round because the other teams that made it are just as good. The WJC for Canadians is a we must win it or else our team was a huge dissapointment(good way to showcase the sport to the world) Branding the NHL as entertainment instead of a sport is a slap in the face of the players who are skilled at the game and I guess every injury and cheap shot is fake, just like in the WWE(I hope you don't think it is real that would be sad). Like I said earlier if you don't like it watch another league, there are plenty out there. The NHL is way bigger then it was back in the 70's, 80's and early 90's. Something with it's current system is helping it grow, like it or not you cannot deny it is getting more viewers every year & these playoffs as dirty as they are, are attracting more viewers.

I think I hated him even more when he played for my team simply because he made me feel embarrassed to be a fan. Vicious head-hunting every time he's on the ice. Didn't he call it a "hockey play" or something? Awesome.

EDIT: Yeah, 7 points higher than any previous total he's had with them. 44 PIMS versus a previous low of 101. It's too bad Kunitz started taking retard city penalties when he stopped, though.

I think this time the hammer might fall though, it is a classic case of, a star getting hurt and with Bettman in the crowd, they might toss the key away on Torres which wouldn't be a bad thing. In regards to Cooke, fuck him too. This picture makes so many people mad haha.

One year without murdering someone doesn't wipe away a career of being a shitheel fyi, if you guys didn't see what shithead Raffi Torres did, he basically lept up into Hossa's face and knocked him out cold http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU4F6QQHVNs Yeah, I've thought Cooke was scum since he came into the league in like 2002 with the Nucks. He just a chickenshit that runs around throwing cheapshots. The league was kind of blind to his shenanigans for the most part till he went to the eastern conference though. Sure he has played clean this year, but I've seen him ruin too many careers/seasons over the last ten. I remember watching George Laraque (back when he was more of a nutbar) chasing him around Northlands before he was finally able to get to the bench after cheapshotting a young Jarret Stoll before the lockout. And yeah, Torres is scum too. Can't really play the game, only runs around throwing late hits because he is too slow to actually catch someone normally. He's admitted to it before too: "If I don't make that hit I'm not in this league." I know son, you only here because you willing to run around throwing cheapshots. Its kind of a shame too, he had so much potential at one point in time... Maybe if he spent more of his time being a professional and trying to get better and less time doing drugs in the edmonton bar scene he'd have been a guy that people tried to target and not the other way around.

the NHL owns the Phoenix Coyotes and wants to get "expansion fees" from prospective new cities rather than moving existing teams. any decision taken against a reckless Coyotes player will be tainted by a conflict of interest. It's a winning formula. their success level is not in line with the population and amount of resources Canadians dedicate to hockey. because of all the anarchy and mayhem in the CHL , AHL and NHL... Canada produces the best referees and linesmen by a wide margin. really the best model is no model. the best model is to just go out onto the river in the winter and play with no adults around.

Wonder if the Hawks will rally like they did last season when Torres flattened Seabrook. Came within one big Luongo save of ousting Vancouver in the first round last season after that hit.
