To the Moon is an indie rpg/adventure game from Freebird Games. It was released early this month, and is currently in application status to be featured on steam.

I just played, and finished, this game this morning, and I enjoyed it so much that I felt motivated to spread the word. The story is very deep and has some big plot twists. Some of the action is a bit cheesy, but the game is almost more of an interactive movie than a game. The action plays a backseat role to the story and the music.
A quick glance at the plot shows two doctors: Eva Rosalene, and Neil Watts. They specialize in granting wishes via memory transplantation to dying patients. It is a difficult job because the process shortens the terminally ill patient's lifespan, thus giving Eva and Neil a limited amount of time to work with.
Johnny, their patient, is an old man who lives in an isolated house with his caretaker and her two children. His wife died two years prior to the present. His dream was to go to the moon, although, he can't explain why.
This particular story follows Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts' attempt to fulfill the dream of the dying elderly man, Johnny. In their mission to do so, they traverse backwards through the man’s memories, unfolding his curious life story before their eyes.
With each step back in time, a new fragment of Johnny's past is revealed. And as the two doctors piece together the puzzled events that spanned a life time, they seek to find out just why the frail old man chose his dying wish to be what it is.

The game is relatively cheap - at $12 USD - with half of the profits being given away to charity. Additionally, you can play one hour free, though that'd probably wind up with you buying the full game anyway

Bought it, played it, loved it - all within 4 and a half hour.
The game-play might be a little short for some people, but it's definitely worth the $12 for the amazing story. Just think of it as buying a book or watching a movie (it pretty much is one anyway).
If you're a fan of good story-telling, I highly recommend giving this game a try - you won't regret it.

Thanks, I'll add this to my "to get" list that is physically sitting in front of me. It sounds really cool and sweet

Is this game similar to Bastion then?

Not quite. There is almost no real game-play in this besides clicking a lot and solving some puzzles here and there.
You can think of it like an interactive storybook: you can control the character and move around, but there's not much else to do besides talking to people and reading a bunch of dialogue. Anyone that has played any visual novels will be instantly familiar with this kind of game.
With that said, the nonexistent game-play doesn't take away from its brilliant story at all - just don't go into it expecting any rpg battles and what not.

12 bucks seems a bit steep for a short indie game with no gameplay and no replay value. But after reading about it on rock paper shotgun I was intrigued. Will buy it when it goes on sale.

Just bought the game+Soundtrack after trying the demo.
Damn, this game is awesome, the story is very good so far(2h playtime) concidering other games, let's say you get an awesome movie/book which lasts 5hours(well, I think it can be replayed with another view of the game or something). And damn, just love how they mix tragic and comic.
PS : http://i.imgur.com/UAmb4.png PS2: Buy this game, now, at least try the demo.

I also wrote on my blog about it, didn't know there's already a post about the game earlier made. http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=291285
I have to agree it's a great game, it's really worth a try. If you afford, even buy it as a support for this indie developer.

i torrented it, but i'm probably gonna drop the $12 for the version on the website anyway because it was that good of an experience.
really, i haven't played a game that told a story this well in ages.

Fuck me that was a great game. The story was so touching, and the music was awesome. Can anyone recommend me a game with a story even remotely as good as that of 'To the Moon'?
Easily worth the $12.

Absolutely amazing game, please you must check this out! The story is breathtakingly beautiful, and an experience I shall surely remember. I can't recommend it enough, if you love games with stories, (or just stories themselves!) make sure you check this out, I'm so happy I found it.
