It's officially out and installing on my ps3!!! GET HYPED FELLAS! SEE YOU ON THE BATTLEFIELD!
Here's some videos of the game. Hope your all as stoked as me. If you guys want to PM me your gamer tag for ps3 and xbox along with your online ranking for MvC3 I'll update the post under this with them for a while to get some casuals in.
"I'm very happy to say that the online connectivity in UMvC3 is now probably just as good as playing SSF4 or AE online's netcode." -Maximilian (from his Online Mode Breakdown video)
That's good enough for me, now I'm hype to play online. =D My PSN is Andwo0o. I think I was 5th lord when I stopped playing vanilla online.
I'm sure my gamertag is in the directory but it's my KingKosi and I'm on PS3. Gya I have you as a friend already and if I remember correctly we played a few times and it wasn't very close lol.
I can't wait to try out Captain America, he is going to be sooooo good in this version. I also can't wait to play Vergil, Strider, Dr.Strange and Frank West. Frank West looks like so much fun to play as
On November 15 2011 04:56 Risen wrote: Ahhhhhh! Get hype! Told myself I wouldn't buy this until Winter Break :<
Why? Fighting games are easy to play casually until winter break and then go balls to the wall! I'm hyped as shit though, even though Wolverine got nerfed! Only character I actually enjoy playing in mvc3, hope some new characters are fun!
Ya Kingkosi you added me as a friend a while ago I think but I'm certain we've never played a game together because I've never once played a game of MvC3 with anyone on my PSN friends list. Actually I don't even remember playing a game of MvC3 or AE with anyone I met through TL for that matter. That said, I'd like to play some games with you whenever you're up for it.
Any TLer is free to add me and msg me for games btw. Just let me know you're from TL when adding me so I know you're not some random stalker.

omg just got this today been watching mvc3 stuff for a while and this is my first step into the brand. Big time sf4-ae player tho, so i hope its not to crazy different to learn! posting this just before i turn my ps3 on! so hyped
-edit- installing game data... damn ps3 i should have known! -1 hype
Haha I was taking back a bit by the games install also.
So far I'm really liking Nova the most out of the new cast and I'm thinking of running Zero, Nova, Taskmaster... I can't wait to get out of class to play some more .
gotta wait til 17th in EU I think But as someone who had Ryu in their team out of pure stubbornness in vanilla, I'm really hyped for this, he actually looks very very solid :D
Ugh everyone online is soooo good every player I've met could do like 30 hit combos off 1 character. It seems like most of these players came from the original mvc3 and had a lot of practice since the game just came out a few days ago, most of the ranking system has yet to stratify the good players from the bad ones. I'm a terrible player...I just want to be matched up with other terrible players.
Just wait a few days for all the high skill players to level up, its a new game so you'll see a lot of top players at the bottom skill levels matching against you early on.
yea I know It's just freaking sad that I cannot enjoy online battles right now because everybody...and I mean EVERYONE is like grandmaster level, right now.

give it a day or two to sort out man youll learn a lot anyway
just like being placed a league ahead of where you should be in SC2
lol this game is so fast paced and different to anything iv played im geting man handled. I'm like 0-12 online at the moment its so hard to tell whats safe and whats not. If i even hit another person at this moment im lucky hehe, i hope i can eventually get the hang of it. I hope everyone is right about the ranking stuff and geting matched better later on i got lucky with one guy tho that was 0-26 it was a close match but i lost and gave him his first win
I highly recommend doing the missions to learn charactors and what they do if your new to the MvC game. I've been playing since MvC2 but I remember what it's like to learn it.
Also play the arcade mode.
This game is all about combos. Even after you do a combo and hit them back to the ground you can do what's called and "OTG" (Off the ground) a lot of charactors can do it themselves, but some need to be paired with an assist to re-juggle.
Why is Combofiend so godlike! Can't wait for WNF tonight, he will be there as well as some other pro players so if you want to see some new tech and high level play of UMvsC3 you should definitely check out the stream tonight.
So hyped for WNF tonight as well. I'm waiting a bit to purchase this myself (gotta get dat Skyrim, figured I'd rather beat that and then try to get good at Marvel again instead of being mediocre at both), but am excited to see THE RETURN OF STRIDERDOOM.
And yeah, those other progamers too. But way more importantly, Clockw0rk.
yea so excited. honestly i not even prolly never ever gonna play/touch mvc3 again, but always fun to watch high level play + remixed mvc2 teams. was slightly excited about vergil until i found out he was a dante/wolverine-ish hybrid, and not the spiral i was expecting (duc 2.0 vergil/rocket racoon/sent lawl).
some of the new changes do seem pretty cool, like haggar's c.C can otg now along with da cap's shield slash
It's fun to play wants you get passed the X-factor BS (Why they make that apart of simple mode I just don't know) and a few other crazy shenanigans it's really fun, especially with friends.
I've found some keep away/pressure stuff using Rocket R. pendulum and Dr. Strange's daggers of denak assist. Going to be rolling with Rocket Racoon, Dr. Strange and Hawkeye as my secondary team.
WOW doom's lazyboy causes hard knockdown? oh shit was that in vanilla?
edit: wtf at zero's changes. dive attack can be cancelable with buster PLUS charge shot can be canceled into on the ground? wtf makes the loss of the hard knockdown forgettable
Bought this for -5 dollars (friend works at a game store and is about to resign so he jipped the system for I and my friend) and I'm having so much fun with it. I wanna get good with Phoenix Wright just because.
Add me to the list: Xbox - youngminiii (<- 3 i's) or DurableBody245 (I use this sometimes when I don't want to pay for my own account's live, like right now)
Definitely can't combofiend out, his spencer pulled 2 miracle comebacks there. Once he gets better with hawkeye (hes already the best hawk probably) that team is gona be hard to beat.

Not sure I started watching the stream at 6 and it started at 5. I would assume there are about 30 people left.
On November 21 2011 12:48 Zidane wrote: Does anyone ever play vergil or phoenix wright?
My buddy plays Vergil and I played Phoenix Wright for a bit. From what I can tell, Vergil is going to be high tier. Phoenix Wright is garbage unless you get him into turnabout mode (which becomes the focal point of the match usually), where he's the best assist in the game.
Vergil is actually really, really good. If you've thought about using him, use him.
I really like Firebrand as well but he doesn't do a lot with Frank. Might have a cheesy Frank, Ammy, Firebrand or a Firebrand, Ammy, Frank team for good assists. I also really like Iron Fist. Shame that Firebrand, Frank, Iron Fist don't help out eachother at all lol.

Going with Frank, Ammy and Strange at the moment.

Obviously every Character is helped by assists, but which character is the most independent
Seeing a bunch of Taskmaster / Hawkeye keepaway chip teams, and they look really solid. Tempted to pick one up as an alt team, not sure who else to put on the team as a 3rd. Leaning towards doom. At this point I'm pretty sure Hawkeye just beats Phoenix Wright for free, sadly. Constant harassment with arrows seems to shut down the entire evidence gathering process.
Theory fighter aside, my team of CapA/Ghost Rider/Viper got second at a tournament last weekend. Got a long way to go, but my goal is to get top 32 at Final Round this year. Posting here to keep myself accountable so I keep practicing.
if you want to play me. I'm in the midwest so people around that area should especially add me! Right now, I'm just struggling to get some B&B combos down to muscle memory. The combo system seems pretty lenient, but I'm still having trouble doing some of the longer combos. I guess it's just down to practicing over and over until I can do it without thinking.
I think I might actually pick this up. I didn't really like vanilla, but they added MASHABLE HYPERS!!!!! I LOVE DEM MASHABLE HYPERS!!!!!! To me that's a good enough reason to get this game. Melty Blood = mash to reduce damage MvC = mash to increase damage
Nova's trijumps are fucking disgusting. He has the lowest trijump in the game AND you can cross people up with it if you delay the timing ever so slightly. A good potential replacement for magneto.

Yah doom would be a great addition to that team. I was messing with Nem/hawkeye/doom, and it was pretty solid. I switched out hawkeye for firebrand though, just because I'm having so much fun with him.

I'm running Hawkeye/Strange/Taskmaster right now and I been playing a ton of player matches an haven't run into many Hawkeye/Taskmaster teams
Been facing alot of Dante/Vergil teams the past few hours but I think that has a little to do with Yipes.
Hey, newbie question here. How do you cancel Wesker's OTG gun into super? And also what do people mean when they say "maximum wesker" or replace "wesker" with any other character?
You have to do team super after the OTG gun iirc ( i hate wesker and dont play him obv), if you have one bar it will just look like you did a normal super, but its always team.
On November 23 2011 12:59 junny wrote: Hey, newbie question here. How do you cancel Wesker's OTG gun into super? And also what do people mean when they say "maximum wesker" or replace "wesker" with any other character?
lol. Basically, the wesker super phantom dance or w/e it's called looks 100% identical to what Maximum Spider was in marvel 2.
I was playing with some Frank West but I just don't think he's my style of character. I really want to run Viper in MVC and AE, but I think she takes the most work to play well. Back to the lab I guess.
I'm runing Iron Fist, Nova, Strange which i have tons of fun with. However I am disgusted at how many Hawkeye, Vegil, and Dante players there are online, especially Hawkeye, he has to be the easiest character in the game IMO.
Honestly, team building isn't that important just yet, since it's not quite yet figured out what characters are optimal for each role. (nor have we found anything crazy like the old dhc glitch)
I picked three characters, went into training mode, and found the right order for dhc's and who needs what assist and it ended up working out pretty well so far. More importantly though, you won't understand why you'd want to change your team comp until you start playing matches and have your team's weaknesses exposed.
@carrot, viper's not as complicated as people make her out to be tbh. The difficulty comes in being able to get in effectively and finding ways to convert combos off of odd hits. The combos themselves just take a little practice and some tight timing.
Just a brief shout. Final Round Japan will have their usual monthly fighting game tourney this Saturday. This will be the first time we will be having UMVC3 up so come join our stream, or if your round Tokyo come join us!, if youd like to see how the Japanese scene is building their teams.
Right now, I'm running with Wesker/Hawkeye/Vergil and it's been gong alright so far, I think I'm like 22-23 or something online.
Though, I'm not really sure what I'm doing in this game. I have at least one B&B for each character in my team, but I don't really have ways to land it other than punishing with cr.L into combo, or just walking up and hoping they don't block low. I also don't really have a gameplan with my assists other than the basics, like throwing them out when I'm trying to approach or throwing them out when I kill a character and another one is about to come in.
I'm also thinking about switching Hawkeye/Vergil slots because whenever I only have Vergil, I can't really do anything if the other guy just holds down back. Whereas with Hawkeye, at least I can shoot arrows and just go nuts and chip the other guy to death. But then again, I suck at this game so maybe I'm not using Vergil well enough to mix the other guy up lol.
If I were you Junny I would put hawkeye on anchor over Vergil. I know what ya mean about not knowing what to do... you have a strong foundation though, the rest just comes from lots of play and taking ideas from different places. Getting the proper mixups going and applying those combos you know will help a ton.
+1 on hawkeye anchor, he's great at it, especially if you have some meter saved up. For now, at least.
If someone is foolish enough to call an assist + press a button as your hawkeye anchor comes in, you can gimlet xfc gimlet and kill the assist and possibly their point at the same time lol

I don't know, just comparing her to other characters (namely AE) she just seems so much more complicated than at least of a majority of others. I'm not very great at either game, just play casually. In your opinion, who do you think the most complicated characters are in both games?
Any of you guys think it's worth picking up the strategy guide? I've heard good things about it, but still not sure. I'm still working on my muscle memory on the fighting stick, reminds me of when I had to work on APM on sc1 T.T.
I think people pick up the strategy guide because of the frame data? Which will be recorded in the shoryuken wiki eventually, I think. For me at least, shoryuken is the best resource for most information. Match videos will probably help a lot to get the gist of what people do in whatever situations.

I picked one up and i find myself using it quite a bit. Its got pretty much all you would ever want to know about a character right there in front of you versus having to look it up online, which is very convenient.
Wait, does the guide actually have practical information? Other than frame data, for some reason, I thought it would be just as useless as the Starcraft guides that come with the battle chest.
If I can find a store that has it, I'm picking up the guide. Mainly because SRK is so slow and annoying to navigate, and frame data + move properties is always useful. Having some sample BnB combos and general playstyle tips isn't bad either.
The guide is really informative. In addition to frame data, you also get useful stuff like execution tips, sample combos, general theory on how you should approach playing a character, etc.

Kuuronn goes by the name G.X. usually.
He will be at our tournament tomorrow. Im waiting for his reply on what team hes running. He might be just running his old team of spencer, hulk, doom.
I finally got it and with no previous MvC experience i find the game quite hard to follow, got raped by some guy who did the same moves all the time, frustrating as it was, it motivates me to pick the game up and learn to play at least decently
my team of choice is : ironfist/amaterasu/dr.strange , i picked them because i think they are cool, i hope they can be playable enough , i completed their missions but i find it really hard to get my combos going in a real game T_T

Know the moves that can be punished if they are blocked, look for your opponent to do them and punish them if they do, and try to stray away from using these moves randomly.

One of the key skills that people new to fighting games don't seem to grasp is blocking. This may sound weird but just practice on the CPU set to the hardest mode and just try to block everything. Know what moves are overheads and what moves have super armor/invincibility so you don't get owned by online Hulks.
Also, use your assists, they are their for a reason. Know what assists can help you get in on your opponent, and what assists can be used as a "get off of me" move. Some assists can extend combos, and others can even help you create unblockable situations where you're guarenteed a hit.
trying to pick up c.viper for ultimate was such a mistake, can only get her box dashing loops like 15% of the time but she's so powerful i really want to learn her. Any fellow viper players know of tips to help with learning this?
Hey guys I'm just starting to play, but what would be better? My heart is set on Captain America/Frank West/ and then I don't know which one would be better, Wesker or Ryu/Akuma?

Wesker.
If you're ever wondering to yourself, "which character is better, Wesker or <any other character>?" the answer is always Wesker.
I don't think there are any even close to being as fast as wesker's lol
So I'm messing around with vergil in training mode...
Capcom straight palette-swapped dante to make this guy. If you do fwd+h with vergil, he stabs with his sword, but his sword somehow stays sheathed at the same time, and when he recovers he puts the sword he stabbed with into an imaginary sheath on his back. On the fwd+h's startup, it's still dante's sword. Not until it hits does it change to vergil's. lol "new" characters =(
so....... yea..... wesker..... glad i didnt throw my 40 bucks for the this game
was great to watch/talk to clockwork in person. and the noel/clockwork match offstream lol. noel must have broken 2 te's getting hype after beating him
edit: i still dont understand y they do marvel then ae. whenever they do ae afterwards it just becomes so much less noisy/hype
Nitisuma said there will be a patch by the end of the year and I'm sure Wesker will get hit with the nerf hammer. I would like to see lvl 3 Wesker towned down just a bit but really X-factor should be done away with all together but I'm sure that won't happen.
I have fun playing this game but apart of me wishes I would have waited for KOF 13 because I played it the other day and it is really good... oh well back to the lab I guess.
so finally decided to start playing this a lil at friends house. vergil feels like wolverine with dante's range. pretty nice
phoenix wright is lol's. THS w/ ammy into find evidence is lol
also got hit twice with the retarded ass dhc srk motion bug when i was using extraordinary guy. can only imagine how cheated chris g felt during GF when he did shinsho
T_T My xbl account got hacked and transfered to another e-mail, but I've reported it to microsoft. They for some reason decided to put an account on my old email, but it doesn't have xbl access! I've been wanting to play this online so much, but I'm stuck in training mode with 2 broken buttons on my stick and it's so hard to get one here. I'm going crazy!

No EU lobbies, and finding a ranked or player match takes forever.
Well apparently from what I've been reading on SRK the game didn't sell that well outside of the United States :/
I know Vgartz isn't highly credible but from what they've posted the game only sold about 30,000 copies, which in my opinion is some where around that number..
Edit: Capcom might wait until after Christmas to post sales numbers for the game... by the way this is KingKosi accidentally posting from a friends account
Yeah it certainly didn't sell well here, but I wonder why... did Capcom forget marketing outside NA? SSF4AE has lots of players here, so there's at least a decent market for fighting games.
I went into GAME on the day after release, and it wasn't under new releases or on the chart sections, had to root through the A-Z section, found it under U on the bottom shelf at the very back. There was just 1 copy there and it was hidden away amongst some random-ass games beginning with U, a total shame really
8 man East coast money matches starting in 20 minutes, single elimination, 1000 dollar prize to winner should be fun. Ima go out on a LIMB here and say a wesker team wins ;o
I think the game is honestly in a pretty good state... except for wesker. He has the best otg assist in the game, some of the best mixups, and his level 3 (4) x-factor is comparable to dark phoenix. They need to put weskers hp down to Akuma levels and either nerf his assist or his final xfactor. If wesker is nerfed in the end of year patch, I think marvel is in a great place.

Already tuned in, I'm hype for the Mike Ross vs FCJago "Battle of the Frauds."
I'd be down with removing the ridiculous buff wesker gets when he loses his glasses, maybe toning down some of his xfactor madness, but I don't really like nerfing characters once a game has been released unless its absolutely wrecking the game. If every tournament is anchor wesker for all of top 8, I guess I could accept it.
The biggest "problem" is that they made his normals so amazing, so much better than everyone else's, letting him do tons of damage without meter and outpoke the entire cast without ever being punishable. Xfactor just meshes with that so well because suddenly everything is super fast and massively frame advantage on block.
Honestly, given enough time, I think Zero will be a huge problem for pretty much the same reasons. There are very few characters that can actually challenge Zero in the air.

FOR EH? SPORTS!! I wish they had a side-betting thing like Liquibet for fighting games lol.
lolwut
Go to an event, side bet everything is what the FGC does.
UltraDavid + Sanchez + rest of random fighting game players that went to NASL grand finals were apparently doing as much obnoxious, ignorant FGC side betting as they could. Bets on first to 100 minerals etc lololololol
Unless you just want some liquipoints for believing in Mike Ross, in which case ignore me entirely looool

Looks like they're talking shop on a money match. Handicap for Combofiend? lol, so much side action. Fuck me I gotta get down to SoCal soon. Haven't put money on a fight since EVO :<
Lmao, they set up the event with fake salt to hype it up but now the whole place is filled with pure genuine mortons. Holy shit.
Like literally everyone is going home salty. Dios X is going home salty cuz Noel bodied him. Noel is salty because Knives exposed him right after (and the dude later lost to the other EC player at the event). Floe is salty because he got blown up. Mike Ross is salty because he got blown up even worse. Jago's salty because he had to duck Combo right there after calling out Combo on his own show. Knives' salty because he couldn't save that West Coast honor. And everyone else is salty because they're from the West Coast.
^ Lol so true. Although I'd say Justin Wong left pretty satisfied. He set out to prove Iron Fist is viable and he did. Plus the west coast pride doesn't really apply to him. But other than that there was so much salt in that building. Fortunately it was still an entertaining and hype event. Can't wait for SCR.
After a decent ammount of offline practice and research I have finally started winning more in this game. Last week i was like 15-90 and now I'm up to 26-104 and I'm extremely excited that I'm now winning more :D I think it's mainly because I've now settled on a core team.

There is so much hype for every match right now for SCR, it's so awesome. I don't even play MvC3 but I enjoy watching the live events more than any other game.

He's playing 2 glass cannons and a slow ass character against a team full of fast characters with death touches and a godlike assist. He basically had to play perfect there; it's much harder on him than on Noel.
And there's the fact that Noel isn't like, bad. There's a reason why the dude kept placing in top 4 in East Coast tourney.
For those of you who use shoryuken and watch the TNT (Thursday Night Throwdown) at GameCenter in San Mateo, CA.
I attended the event 1.5 weeks ago (they host it every 2 weeks) and they did random 2v2 UMVC3 teams. My partner GC|Yoshi and I took 5th place. I played a few times on stream under the handle "Arlock" and hope some of you guys saw me.
I will be going again this thursday and hope you guys tune in to support me .
I've been training hard and have some new tech to show off. I was at my buddies house yesterday and we played 201 games straight up without breaks to practice.
I run Taskmaster/Akuma/Wesker but I may be subbing out Akuma for my new project which I won't reveal unless I use *him/her*

I have problems getting the motivation to learn my third character...
My main team is Wolverine/???/Sentinel.
I've been thinking of picking up Wesker, but he doesn't interest me and I feel like my team would be full of "baby combo" characters, as my friends would call it. (Not that I have any problems with that, I just think I'd rather have a more technical character)
As for characters that I like, I've been wanting to pick up either Zero or Deadpool. But whenever I pick either of those, I always end up going in training mode with Wolverine and try to make better combos with Wolverine.
With Zero, I feel I lack the possibility to do extended combos with Wolverine, but Deadpool I manage to do 1.1mil with OTG assist and 2DHCs (I use deadpool third, Sentinel second if I want to set up for that). I heard that overall, Zero's a better character than Deadpool, but trying to primarily main Wolverine, who do you guys think would be a better fit for me? (Don't touch Sentinel, I use him to get in with those drones!)

I am considering these teams.
Zero/Dante/Trishv-> I'm a dante/trish fan and zero is one of my best charactors. Definite potential on this team, not sure if I agree with Trish as the anchor though.
Zero/Vergil/Hawkeye This could be an awesome team, Hawkeye is pure sex and so is virgil. This is the best team you submitted in this post and I don't have anything to say against it.
Zero/Strider/Taskmaster This is one of those teams that also dies really quickly, I believe they have a lot of synergy and work well together, but once again if you get blown up you're left with task level 3 xfactor which is awesome, but no assists :/ I have task on point for my team and believe thats where he belongs
Zero/Akuma/Morrigan -> simply no u have no health at all. All 3 of these guys die to one combo if your playing people with some slight knowledge.
Please offer suggestions and reasons since most of you probably know the game better than me.

If you want a more technical character you could try Dante or C. Viper, but it mostly depends on what assist you'd like (either an OTG or some kind of lockdown assist). I would say choose either Wolverine or Zero for your point character- having them both on the same team is rather redundant since they're both heavy rushdown, and neither have particularly good assists. I think Deadpool would make a good second character, as he has both a projectile assist and an OTG assist.
Sentinel by himself has a rather difficult time opening up good players though, so it might be a better idea to have Deadpool as anchor if you're comfortable with that.
Hey everybody, I'm rolling Capt America/Nemesis/Nova. I would like to know who else goes with with the Capt America? I can't drop him because he is just too much fun to play.

Right now im running capt/mags/doom. Doom works really well with cap cause of his hidden missiles is perfectly timed with his charging star. So after a bnb knockdown combo, call doom, otg, hyper charging star then they get picked up by missiles then another hyper charging star. Plus dooms just great anyway. any projectile char assist is great with cap too. You can do a, b,c + assist, flip to other side abc and the mixup is really dirty.
CapA + Hawkeye is really good as well. You can use the arrows like any other projectile assist with calling hawkeye + flip, or you can get super buff combos with the otg arrow. I play cap a lot, and with hawkeye poison arrow you can do 1million damage bnb's.
C.Viper is actually a good character to mesh with cap. If people don't pushblock quick enough, blockstring into crossup with the viper overhead assist has never been blocked for me yet lol. Also, hyper charging star into viper's ulta 1 super (I have no idea what its called, it's the qcb one) combos for every bnb and for almost every hyper charging star since they almost always get pushed to the corner. The viper super, in addition to OTG'ing, does relatively unscaled damage, tagging on almost 200k even in a fully scaled combo. Burn kick is also good for combo extending at the end of a BnB (after a 2nd knockdown in or near the corner, call viper, otg shield slash, viper hits, L charging star, H charging star xx Hyper charging star gets extra damage and meter). DHCing from Viper back to cap works as well for a ton of damage, and you can do stupid gimmicks like H charging star, cancel it late to Hyper Stars and Stripes to beat an attempted punish, and even dhc to viper's qcf super if they attempt to punish that. It's stupid, but it absolutely will work at least once lol.
Crazy. Love seeing morrigan get taken seriously. I've been trying her out myself (with cap/morrigan/doom) for a little while myself, I think she's starting to work her way up the tier list.

Well the first step is figuring out your comp/assist. Next you will want to gauge the situational advantages of your character where your other two's lack, or even supplement their offensive potential. A good place to start is practicing your B&Bs in practice mode. After you stop dropping combos, then it is a good idea to simply use the character you are trying to learn, even if it is your third, on point.
And if you are having a lack of motivation, just play Spencer o.O

Zero fits well with almost anybody's assist. He gives a lot of flexibility as a point character. I'd probably just mess around with the cast and pick at least 1 more character you simply enjoy playing. Sentinel drone assist goes with almost anything and he's an easy character to use if you want to focus on learning Zero. It will give you a good place to start when comparing assists to one another.

ps: this shits getting hype!
Yeah, it really reminds me of MvC2 Sent with CC assist. We need more assists like that one, so we won't have everyone playing cheap shit like Wesker and Zero. MvC2 was godlike because it was all about space control and punishing when your opponent calls their assist at the wrong time, and I'm starting to see more of that in this game as people get better with Trish and Strange.
On March 05 2012 05:57 Cel.erity wrote: Is it me or is log the best assist in the game?
It's good, but calling it the best is a tad bit far-fetched. I mean look at shopping cart, people called that shit the best assist day 1, it's just a case of getting used to it. Unfamiliar characters will do that to people.

Half of top players didn't win Evo. Viscant isn't even a top player.
It's really the same as in SC2 whenever someone wins a big tournament using a hole in the metagame, except in this case it was EVO - the tournament, and it was won by someone who honestly has not played well before or since, and didn't even play all that impressively during. Viscant's Phoenix is just not on the same level as others like fchamp.
I played competitive MvC2 and have met Viscant in person; he's a weird guy, but I respect him. He's never been at the level where he deserves to call himself an Evo champion though.
But it was a 5 month old game, I mean look back at BW and SC2. Lets be honest Fruitdealer is never really at a level that he could call himself a champion, but the game was new so he was able to win, just like Viscant for Marvel 3. In that sense it can never be taken away from him. Same with like, Grr.... in Brood War or whatever.
That's true, but the GSL is a monthly/bimonthly thing, so the champions will rotate more frequently. And at the time when Fruitdealer won, I think he actually was the best player, if not top 3. Viscant was most certainly not a better player than Noel/Justin/Combofiend at the time of his victory, which (to me) is obvious if you watch the games.
Either way though, I root against the Yankees emphatically and probably will for the rest of my life, I don't have some great justification for it. There's nothing wrong with rooting against players, makes watching more fun.
I mean, thats like saying July wasn't a top 2 player when he got 2nd place in the GSL to, what was it, MC or something? But Zerg was good at that time.
Viscant wasn't a top 3 PLAYER, but he had a top team with his low mechanics yet mindset to match that team, and then he won.

Viscant performed well at several tournaments before EVO, such as Wednesday Night Fights and Revelations (where he placed first). He basically pioneered the way that all other Wesker players played with thorough knowledge of his mixups and resets, which he even REVEALED to everyone in a two hour long Youtube video. If people still couldn't deal with him after that, I don't know how you can say he didn't deserve to win EVO.
Viscant might have a horrible Phoenix, but he clearly knew exactly what he was doing when he made his team- a strong battery, invincible assist, and the best anchor- and if people were unable to deal with that "hole in the metagame", I'd say he deserved to win EVO.
I am a big fan of Viscant since I saw him first appear on an early WNF. His Phoenix certainly wasn't as flashy as others, and polished you could say, but he was pioneering with Wesker and played smart almost always. He was on fire at EVO and deserved to win that. I still have faith he would be a top force in ultimate if he actually dedicated himself.
It feels odd to have people discount tournament victories from gimmick teams when the game's basically a contest of who can gimmick harder and not drop combos. It's not like that's a bad thing, but if someone won with wolverine/akuma/wesker or whatever the random mixup team of the time was is that really less fraudulent? Half the skill in this game is knowing how to do/prevent gimmick setups.
Just watched this video of Tatsu vs Richard Nguyen. Holy shit was this video educational for me and the commentary was just hilarious to add icing on the cake. Sounds like Chris Rock commentated this
Here's a question, would learning to play this game on the vita make you just as good at the game on xbox/ps3? Is the port on the vita a good representation of the console version?
The vita version is exactly the same, plus a few extras in training mode as far as I'm aware. Only difficulty might be transferring from playing on a vita to playing on a ps3/xbox pad. No clue how different those are.
But you're not playing the starcraft 64 equivalent of marvel 3 if that's what you're worried about
Yeah, I just played it on the vita yesterday and it's really the same, but you'll have a harder time doing some things if you have bigger fingers like I do. I eventually just said "fuck it" and laid the vita on a table and pretended the controls were like a mini arcade stick's, it made it much easier for me to do the zero bnb's that I can do on the 360.
Hey guys, what do you think of tier lists in this game?
In Marvel 2, the game was so broken that in order to compete. You had to have a Sentinel in almost every situation and the X-men characters. So the tier lists were very legit.
But in Marvel 3, it seems more balanced so my real question in the end is do tier lists in this game act as a good guide or are they just full of crap and done by people with too much time on their hands making the tier lists fashionable nonsense?

I'd say the tier list in this game is as legit as any other fighting game. That is to say, it's also as full of crap as any fighting game. Including MVC2. Keep in mind that the Sentinel setup you're probably thinking about wasn't at all top tier for a while into MVC2's life. Tier lists generally represent what is understood about a particular fighting game at the time they are generated. But you should never look at any tier list and consider it a hard truth. All tier lists change over time as a game ages. And you should never look at top tier representing "broken as shit good" and everyone else as "can't compete" because that simply isn't the case for nearly every fighting game that comes out these days.
Sentinel was only the best (without argument) 4 years after the game (doom ruled 2001, 2002~2003 was a debate between Storm-sent, only after the unblockable did Sent Become undisputed). Still, a good low-tier dynamic team is still pretty decent in marvel 2. Hell, you had tron-proj assist that makes any team viable :D
Give marvel 3 more than a year before we start coming out with solid tiers for now just enjoy the game and is wildly fluctuating character placings
Does anybody play this on PSN? I've tried to many times (I guess my region is west Europe?) and so far the "best" connection I've gotten was three bars and laggy as fuck (read unplayable). My friend plays on XBL and seem to find matches with good connection regularly. Is this simply because nobody plays this on PS3? It's sad because I'm really motivated to play this online.

Best part of that whole bit was that about 5 minutes before that room went all #worldstar Bee got on the stream mic and said "I don't care whose match goes first but I'm gonna go troll fanatiq check this out"
Top tier jackass, but I couldn't stop laughing throughout the night regardless.
Hey, so I've been trying to pick this game up and have been mostly practicing comboes to begin with. My team is Zero/Dante/Vergil with Ryuenjin, Jam Session and Rapid Slash.
I live right next to the best player in Finland and some other high-level players and I'll be able to play against them every Sunday so I'd like to be able to beat them. Of course that'll take forever because they've been playing since Vanilla but I don't think they seem that incredible.
I'm kind of at a loss about what my general purpose should be in the neutral game(can you call it footsies), especially with Zero because he's my point and most important character. Like... What should my goals be? Pokes? How do I go about scoring hits, opening my opponents up? When do I go into the air? And so and so on... This game's so different from Street Fighter, I really have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing.
I guess that in general I'd try to poke c.M from max range and also spam my projectiles if I can beat them in a projectile war... I guess I could also use lightning canceled into Buster or something? Ehh I'm just really confused and don't at all know what sort of a mindset I'm supposed to have while playing. I guess I should just use safe moves from max range or something like that >_< I also have no idea when to use assists outside of comboes... Sighity sigh.
Oh and http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE1AC8AA7D81542B9 here's some videos of the players I'll be playing against, Jufo's generally considered the best player in Finland so that'd be the most important one I guess. His team is Hulk / Deadpool / Sentinel so if I'm thinking correctly my gameplay should be to spam projectiles and also to overwhelm him with mixups ... If I had any clue how I'm supposed to go about mixups <_< Hulk ToDs all my characters meter-positively so I really can't do stupid stuff.
Kind of a terrible post this is because it's not even clear what I'm asking -.- I guess it's mostly about, I know how to do comboes pretty well and I know what to do after landing hits so I wonder what my general gameplan should be regarding actually landing the hits. Is it fine to just go super aggressive or am I supposed to play footsies? After landing hits my gameplan's basically: With Zero, corner carry into lightning loops, kills everything. With Dante(and assuming Zero's dead) it's more complicated but it's generally about landing a hit, doing a combo, DHC into Vergil, Sword loop until death. With Vergil solo it's either a XFactor lvl 3 6-7 second kill(Still working on the fastest possible way to kill with XFactor, don't have much time to spare so that it doesn't run out) or if I don't have Xfactor, sword loops into kill... So very simple ideas after I actually land some hits...
I'd really appreciate it if anyone knew some very basic ways of landing hits with those 3 characters, maybe about when to use the assists as well. I guess I can't expect to do super well playing against humans for the first people with my first opponents being some of the best in the country but at least I'd like to have some clear idea of what I'm supposed to do instead of just having no clue about what keeps on going wrong.
As far as Im aware, zero has a bit of trouble vs hulk, but you should go watch videos of Flux from big 2 for a straightforward demonstration of how to play zmc (especially vs fooblat, the ny hulk player).
You're not really gonna be going for ground footsies with zero. More like zipping around like a fool with busters / lightning and using your heavy buttons to destroy everyone else's buttons up close.
Not the cleanest match ever but:
It's worth warning you that team takes a fair amount of execution practice. Something like vergil wesker strider would probably be easier starting out, but I'm kinda assuming you already knew that
I heard people using X-23 with a Trish Assist. I could go on Shoryuken, but I want to avoid a possible shitstorm, and I have been trying to pull off the combination with minimal progress... Does anyone know how this out fit in?
Ya that's the problem. You'd probably have to of had spencer in at some point and then have gotten strange snapped in. It's not out of the realm of possibility though. Especially when people want to kill that lvl 3 strange.
I wonder if it still works if you have strange, spencer, nova and just the team hyper will take 3 bars. I would think that it would, unless bionic arm hits them out of the nova beam - but you would think the strange hyper would do that already.
Watching stream monsters cry tears of salt after Chris G wrecks face never gets old.
I wish he's just pick his real team though (or at least the Ammy/Morrigan/Phoenix one if he wants to troll). Not feeling the whole "I can beat you with my B-team" thing. He's letting the haters get to him.

Yea. Sometimes I feel he picks some of his teams to shut irrelevant stream monsters up. One point where Chris lost to Justin at WB, he started for about 3 weeks straight running his Morrigan team but not using Astral Vision super at all.
I feel though after his recent major wins, its like a weight has been taken off his shoulder. I respect him adding Vergil to his team.
EG curse does not apply to PR Balrog apparently, and he seems like one of the only players who can go toe to toe vs Chris G. I know Vergil is a silly character, but Rog probably has the best Vergil out there.

And honestly, PR Rog seems to be also in the top tier. His Wolverine rushdown is just too clean, maybe some day people will be able to defend it but not today.
It's kinda sad the talents in the East Coast is so concentrated in so few people that Andre and Unknown are making multiples top 8 lol. Step ur shit up pls EC.
That was hype. I can understand why some people see it boring, but the intricacies of Chris' Morrigan, he just doesn't blindly derp illusion soul spam. And those hit confirms, clutch and art.
Firebrand wins a major before Zero, lololololololol. tbh I like seeing chris G. Morrigan is hard to play well consistently in a game where nearly everything can kill you off one touch and kill your doom at the same time.

I'm not counting Vanilla Unless he won something in ultimate that im not aware of.
Decided to start dicking around in this game again after WB7. Picking up Spencer, never played him much in the past but he's really fun and (most importantly) holding my interest. Need to figure out a team to either put behind him or put him behind. I really like Nova, and Strange... Might just try Team Nemo for fun lol, why not.
On February 27 2013 03:55 Trumpet wrote: That team is def legit but man those strange combos are harder than they look. I've seen some people use it just for the assist anyway though
That's kind of my mentality anyway lol, because I agree. It's a solid assist and the book super is always legit for any situation, so learning the loops would be a bonus. Nova and Spencer already fun enough as is (Nova is a character I've always had the itch to get into in the downtime when I wasn't playing).
Plus I just really want to put a beam assist behind him but I refuse to play Doom lolololol. Used to, got boring, and he's soooooo... Doom.

Mihe won Texas Showdown last year, which despite being a mess was a Road to Evo event

I honestly don't consider that a major. It was a kinda big tournament I guess, but it didn't have any of the competition you see at bigger events. I think that tournament giving evo seeding was a pretty big mistake and probably was the #1 reason they changed the format of it for this year.
So I'm interested in getting back into Marvel after watching a lot lately (and being bored as fuck) and I'd figure I'd breathe a little life into this thread. I'm interested in coming up with a solid team or two which I think will really help me enjoy it more, rather than picking some uncoordinated stuff and having poor synergy. I'm trying to come up with some team combinations I can make involving at least two of the following chars, which are my favorite / those I am most interested in at the moment (in order of those I have the most experience with): Hulk Spencer Dormammu Strange Ammy
I've considered trying out Team Nemo (Nova/Spencer/Strange) because I really like the way it plays, but Nova has always felt a bit awkward in my hands. I love his style and such, but I've never had good luck playing/practicing with him. Might just need to get the hang of it. I've been playing a lot of Spencer lately whenever I decide to dick around for a bit, and I think I want to include him no matter what. Going for fun over pure practicality. Besides that, I've just been trying to think of anything that has some sort of synergy, even if it's not insanely strong or top-tier.
As ideas I've been pushing around: Hulk/Spencer/Hawkeye (OTG for Hulk, Hulk Spencer for fun/damage, Hawkeye decent anchor? I haven't played much Hawkeye but he's definitely a char I like stylistically, could learn to love him) Dorm/Ammy/Spencer (Cold Star seems like it would mesh/support Dorm well, but might not have the same strength a beam does since it's shorter range..?)
Idk just provoking discussion. I have a love/hate relationship with this game and I barely play it. For now I just want to pick up something to have fun with while I have time, and maybe see if I can't play with a few of my friends online (had connection issues in past).

Interesting note about Strange+Hulk. Didn't think of that for some reason. Good lockdown beam. Wonder how Hulk/Strange/Spencer would play. Would save me from learning Hawkeye from scratch, but lacks an OTG assist. I like Strange a lot but got discouraged when I struggled with his loops. I could look beyond this, since he's solid anyway even if you don't rely on those. Or could just grind it out...
I should dick around with Phoenix Wright lmao. Because why not.

I barely play this game, but cold star assist is pretty good at covering Spencer's attack angles and OTGing, so I would probably start with Spencer/Ammy and just add a point monster like Vergil or Wolverine who could benefit from the OTG. Dormammu is pretty solid though, you'd do fine with that.

Cold Star doesn't OTG, or am I misunderstanding what you're trying to say? Though yes, I like the assist a lot with Spencer on point.
Regardless - some of the Spencer teams I've messed around with are: (Doom/Spencer)/(Hawkeye/Magneto/Taskmaster) [started out with Doom/Spencer/Hawkeye, and didn't think it was too difficult to play. First two interchangeable depending on...stuff...though I mainly use Doom/Spencer order if I ever play this team because of corner mixups with Doom+Slant shot assist) Spencer/Vergil/Magneto Spencer/Dante/Ammy [currently using this] Magneto/Spencer/(Doom or Dorm) Zero/Spencer/(Taskmaster/Magneto) Viper/Spencer/(Taskmaster/Magneto)
I would think you could do some stuff with Spencer/Ammy/Strange with the lockdown from Cold Star and Bolts assist, and the benefits of having Ammy's assist [outside of a lockdown setting] also allows you to preserve a wallbounce for an extra vertical grapple. I suppose you could also use Dorm instead of Strange, but it depends on how comfortable you are without a fullscreen assist.
like 20th edit in: also, I think Spencer is not that great an anchor compared to a lot of other characters. Just fyi. The Dorm/Ammy/Spencer team would probably function better as Spencer/(Dorm/Ammy), whichever one you feel more comfortable on anchor. You'll find you can put a lot of pressure on people when Spencer's backed by an assist, especially with one like Cold Star.

Thanks for the input. Yeah when I was listing some of those options I was way less concerned with the order and more concerned with how the characters interact with each other. I'm really unfamiliar with Ammy but I like her as a character and I feel Cold Star would be a really good assist to build into a lot of teams I'd like to play.
If you like the Spencer Ammy duo I would recommend throwing Taskmaster in the middle. I ran sets with a girl who mains this team and I was blown away by its synergy. It has better synergy than Combofiend's vanilla team imo. No matter who you start, you'll always have a neutral game assist and an assist to extend combos. They all DHC into each other from anywhere on the screen and the THC punish is just brutal.
Here is a video showing some things the team is capable of. It's made by the player I mentioned above, dunno her real name but on SRK she's known as Adelheid Stark.
haz.Angelic 3-0'd Chris G in pools or so Yipes said. Fanatiq vs Chris G now in losers top 64.
oh, and apparently Fanatiq pulled some shit in stream yesterday, so now Spooky is not allowing anymore PDP promotions till the company speaks directly to him.
Must be bad since Spooky said in chat that AGE is lucky he's letting fanatiq wears the cap lol.

He grandfathered that all the way since season's beatings so it doesn't count Kappa
Chris G's win percentage this weekend was fucking off the charts. He only had that one 0-3 slip up in the singles tournament and he absolutely wrecked that Curleh Mustache 5v5 tournament, especially California's teams.
I feel that this team does make his chance of winning higher by default, but you cannot deny the talent. His ability to convert off stray hits and control the flow of the match was flawless.

You can see how far he's come from grinding it out.
If anyone will be going to EVO 2017 world finals, I will have the mod there for people to play test. best way to reach me is @Game650 for hotel room info where the mod will be hosted. More updates:
Evolution 2023 announced that they will be starting Throwback Tournaments, where every year they will showcase an old classic game as part of their main lineup, with a full prize pool.
Between Street Fighter 6 looking to be absolutely huge (and Capcom announcing the biggest ever prize pool for a fighting game), and now Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 on the main stage, this Evo season is poised to smash the player entrant numbers of previous years hard.
I don't even get how they managed to do this considering the weird and fucked-up legal limbo of the MvC games; all kinds of IP fuckery has made it so that Capcom aren't allowed to work on or patch the game any more. I don't even know. It's been hell staging tournaments for it, but here we are.
