Getting western version of Valkyria Chronicles vibes a little which is a good thing for me. Is there any story in this game or is the entire game more skirmish like? The original x-com games didn't have much story, which is understandable. I mean, how are you supposed to have a story if all your main soldiers keep dying? On a more serious note, the focus on the plot will probably be minimal. There's not much to say beyond "Aliens are invading. X-COM fights back."

Thats cool, I find that the skirmish kind of campaigns have much more replayability than story focused campaigns. Mix of those should be okay. In Valkyria Chronicles which if of course very unrelated to this your few story soldiers couldn't die but all the other soldiers could die permanently, and they were all unique personalities. Laughed at the fit Sid Meier on the IGN video, was kind a 50/50 on pre-ordering this as I've put a lot of money on games recently but I just might have to go for it, don't even have Civ V. And I don't want to see genres like this dying. Not sure whether I want to go Iron Man or not though on my first playthrough.

Every thing was dumbed down You got new weapons when you leveled up, and there were no way to chose any items or have an inventory. There were other rpg elements either like stats or character customization. The movement phase was also dumbed down. Every action took the same time and you could only do three things per turn: shoot, move and shoot or move twice. I really hope it was just the demo that sucked and that this will be fixed or else I'm gonna play the UFO Extraterrestrials remake from 2007 again. That was actually really good. demo sucked. You get new weapons by manufacturing like normal and although there's not an inventory like in old XCOM, there still is an inventory. I don't think it was available in the demo

It's available on Steam still The new one does change some non-core features of the original, which sure does make it different though not necessarily worse. That part is up to each person's opinion, and how big of an attachment you have on playing the same game is up to you.

Yea, I just said I was gonna play the UFO: Extraterrestrials remake Also, I already own the original ones, and I have the original install still on my hard drive. UFO/X-Com was a tactical RPG (with base building elements). From what I've seen, they've gotten rid of the RPG element completely and that is pretty "core". Why would I care about losing a character if I can make an identical one? I also really enjoyed the inventory management, but maybe that's just me. The tactical side seems fine though, even though they lost a lot of complexity when got rid of time units. The base building part I have no opinion of, but if they got rid of multiple bases and base defence I'm not sure there's much left there either.

The original had hardly any rpg elements but in this new version they add those elements, which make the soldiers stand out and not be identical like in the original. Basically the opposite of what you claim is true. I am also skeptical about the removement of inventory management but it may work out however I am glad if there wont be base defense missions since I always hated those no matter what XCOM game I was playing. Having a single core base and then optional strategic bases with fighters is a great choice imo.

It still a tactical game, and units still have stats, and they also have "perks" you choose for your soldiers as they level up. I mean seriously, reading that bold part make want to nerdrage at you. I will choose not to tho :p I was also a huge fun of the original XCOM, and still fail to see what is more "complex", choosing to spend a single bar of TU, or having to choose when and how i spend my 2 actions. Also, the original game didn't have a cover/flank system, neither had skills to synergize, etc etc... as a veteran UFO player, i can't understand those arguments (i am right now playing it for like my 4131231 time because i fucking love the game) about "dumbed down". Same for the quantity of soldiers. I don't know about you, but i did most missions on superhuman with just 5-6 soldiers, and the rest were just cannon fodder and i didn't give a crap about dying soldiers. If anything with less soldiers, you are more tense about loosing them and allows for more depth gameplay withouth devaluating the pace of combate. Since your soldiers have stats which get increased by levelling up, and also can get perks or skills too, you will hate losing soldiers. Totally fucking hate it because you are only playing with 6, you can't have that cannon fodder anymore to protect your 5-6 elite soldier and rape content. I agree on no bases attacks tho (actually lost a game today due to this :D), but i also understand Firaxis's point, i hope they really implement it as an option in the future. By the way second wave difficulty options (can be edited through .ini for first gameplay tho) + Show Spoiler + Damage Roulette Weapons have a much wider range of damage. Total Loss Lose all gear from soldiers who die in combat. Red Fog Any wounds taken in combat will degrade a soldier's stats for that mission. Hidden Potential Rookies will have random starting stats. Results Driven As a soldier is promoted, their stats will increase randomly. New Economy A country will offer less funding as its panic increases. War Weariness Overall funding levels drop inexorably with every month that passes. High Stakes The rewards granted for stopping alien abductions are randomized. Diminishing Returns The cost of satellites increases with every one that is built. E-115 Elerium stores will degrade over time. The Blitz The aliens will target a larger number of cities every time they launch an abduction attack. Absolutely Critical A flanking shot will guarantee a critical hit. More Than Human The psionic gift is extremely rare. The Greater Good The secret of psionics can only be learned by interrogating a psionic alien. Marathon The game takes considerably longer to complete. Alternate Sources The power requirements of all facilities are increased.

Is there anything in the remake that defines a character aside from what upgrades you give them? If not, they definitely missed out on an added layer of depth. I would've liked to see traits such as cowardly (+x% increased chance of panicking) or strong leader (increased effectiveness of nearby allies). It would've given players more reason to grow attached to their soldiers. Losing a soldier who has a set of good traits gives that feeling of "damn, he was a good man. He'll be hard to replace." I think I'm getting into Jagged Alliance territory with that suggestion but it'd fit in well with X-Com remake.
