If you could unlock different things or level stuff up in the MP and would make any sort of progress, I'd play it as well.
I don't know how it works in this game but this is quite common nowadays. It's much harder to sell a single player only game so many just add a half-assed MP just to shut up their investors. Kind of a shame really.

half baked MP has been in games since forever, you just dont remember those games :D
some games, like deus ex, have such a strange multiplayer, that it turns around and gets awesome again.

The retailers in US release games on Tuesdays and in Europe on Fridays. This has something to do with organisational stuff (stock check, tradition, whatever). Since both continents like to do stuff differently since ages ago (metric system, Celsius vs Fahrenheit, 110V vs 230V etc.), this will probably not change the next couple of centuries.

This isn't completely true anymore though. For example, all Blizzard games and expansions after WoW vanilla launched on the same day in EU and NA (with the EU even having a few hours headstart due to timezones). There are other AAA titles that have had worldwide launches.
And now with a huge part of sales going through digital channels such as Steam, Origin and Battle.net, it seems rather silly that, in case of XCOM, the whole game is happily preloaded and sitting in my Steam directory, but I am unable to play simply because I happen to be in a different region.

Games are released on Tuesdays in the US because the major company that tracks sales does so on a Tuesday-Monday basis. Monday is the end of the previous week so a Tuesday release guarantees a full week for the first week of sales. It helps companies track sales on a week to week basis. The reason the week ends in Monday is probably so that companies have a workday to get the weekend's numbers and prepare the report.
DVDs and music also gets released on a Tuesday in the US. Books don't follow the tradition but many are released on a Tuesday as well. This release day avoids conflicting with movies in theaters, which are released on Fridays.

I don't think there's really much more to it than what was shown in the show match. I heard there are ranked matches though, but the only gameplay mode is what you saw. One versus one and you have a set amount of points you can spend on your squad and then battle it out. In my opinion they could've left out the multiplayer completely.. I hope they don't have achievements for the MP, since I'm a completionist when it comes to these things and I don't plan to play MP at all So because you don't like MP the game should not have MP? What kind of logic is that? Actually MP in this game looks better and more interesting then SP. Campaign is a simplefied version of real x-com made for consoles and then ported to PC, but MP looks to have potential to give us real X-com with high death rate where your mistakes are punished instantly. Why would that be, the MP has the exact same engine and mechanics as the singleplayer. Are you whining about the game, or the AI? The game mostly. I been following its development in last 2 months closely, watched every piece of video I could find and watched people play the demo a lot. The game is a more simple version of X-com, that is a fact. It is fun? I hope so as I plan to play it. Does it require less strategy, less planning before missions and less luck then original x-com? Definitely. Is it less horror and creepy? Most certainly. Just the lack of projectiles slowly coming out of darkness towards your squad while you watch it and hope it misses makes it worse. In new game before you shoot you can tell if you hit when you score a critical as each critical has an animation. In old game watching your guys autofire and the tension of waiting to see if you kill that alien with any of the slow moving projectiles was awesome.
Also I hate things like 2 grenades per mission, 1 medikit use and 1 rocket. It is artificial and stupid. But not for MP, for MP is just one of the gameplay rules that you use or abuse to win.
What really sets this game apart from X-com is the MP. That is its one true advantage. And it looks very much fun and competitive. And no matter how unfair aliens were in original x-com they could be abused and their challenge will never match what other players can bring to the table in MP.

If I remember correctly people used something similar to pretend they are from Australia and get Skyrim unlocked earlier

yes, you can do that, but you shpuld know that theoretically, this is grounds for the termination of your steam account inculding all games.

this game is quite fun. i'm enjoying it. apparently i suck and i die a lot though.
i like how when the skyranger lands, there's a cinematic of everyone getting out of it.
no more send the tank down and get shot at by 5 different aliens, then get your blaster launcher carrier psi-controlled and nuke everyone before they even leave the ship situations.

I've already lost two games due to bugs.
One was when I rage mashed escape just as the last bullets were headed towards my guy. Both the "Mission End" and the Cancel Mission confirmation came up and completely locked me out of doing anything. Was pretty funny.
The second I sent two interceptors to a UFO, shot it down with the first and immediately sent the Skyranger to the site. After I utterly failed the mission, I got back to the map and it starts following the second Interceptor. It flies to the North Pole, disappears, and the game leaves me on the Geoscape map with nothing on it completely frozen. Lol.
Other than that having a blast playing Classic Ironman.

Getting owned on Classic Ironman squad checking in.
Just out of curiosity, what are your squads looking like? I've pretty much dropped snipers completely. They're only good on certain maps (ie not a lot of interiors) and mine miss their shots so much that they're way underleveled compared to the rest of my troops.
Been going with extra heavies instead of snipers and having a lot more luck. Not real far into the game though, had to restart a few times due to sucking.

Snipers are pretty good if you get snap shot or the gunslinger perk so they can still move and shoot without having to wait a turn. They also get an amazing perk later on that let's them treat half cover as full cover.
Assault is probably my favorite class so far, run & gun + lighting reflex is amazing.

Depends on the build of your sniper.
The Deadeye type sniper with Squad Sight, Damn Good Ground perks is very tricky and hard to use in the beginning of the game. But when you get armors with grapple hook, they become a lot better because can jump up on a lot of trucks too. And with a late game Archangel armor, they become indispensable because you always have a high ground advantage. So this build is pretty much for a later part of the game.
I view snap shot type character more of a scouting character more than actual Sniper. It is weaker in the later game but still is good if you build it right.

I've got to admit, I've been skeptical, but watching some VODs of the released game have convinced me that this will be at least an above-average remake. The abilities are still gimmicky, but the tactical gameplay does have that XCOM feel. I hope future mods will let us take 8-10 soldiers. The lack of a TU system is still a needless simplification, but the run-shoot/dash and overwatch system is...adequate.
The enemy AI is still weak, but much better than the original XCOM. Seeing units try to flank the XCOM squad made my day.
All the elements for a great XCOM are there, but I'll wait just to make sure this isn't a Civ-5-esqe fiasco.

Got this for my PS3 today and am enjoying it so far. I've only got an hour or so in and restarted a couple times lol due to silly deaths checking everything out etc. The feel of the original X-Com is there but its definately missing some things and all the fans know that but I am enjoying it.
Started classic mode on ironman setting and without the tutorial, first map, I move by guy to the first half cover spot and get shot in the head. FML welcome back to Xcom lol. Besides that instant rage/gratification point the only annoying thing I've seen so far is occassionally from overwatch my guys shoots right through the cover and the camera is all jacked up rather then stepping out to shoot. Doesn't happen all the time but it is happening.
Not having to manage ammo is missed and at the same time a joy. You lose a turn with the character that is reloading but thats cool I guess. I really miss managing all that stuff tho. The base thing is just weak imo. I really, really liked the multiple base setups from the original game and often had research bases and manufacturing bases etc.
I really enjoy watching the aliens run for cover and flanks tho, and am enjoying the animations of the little battles. Its just fresh compared to the simplicity of the original (not that there was anything wrong with it, but I like the upgrade).
Overall I'm glad I bought the game today as I rarely buy games on day one but this is giving me my fill of xcom that I wanted. Fans who truly want a better and closer remake to the original should check out Xenonauts tho. For $20 I don't think you can go wrong with it.
+ Show Spoiler +Edited cause had Xenogears on my mind for some reason when I meant to put Xenonauts
|
Xenogears? thats a PS1 RPG along the lines of final fantasy with giant robots.
How is that similar to xcom?
|
he meant xenonauts, which is a closer reimagining of xcom: EU then the firaxis game.
PS Xenogears is fucking awesome too but OT

Wait, they don't kill you anymore the second you leave the skyranger? The first step out of the skyranger was the most exciting moment of every mission (unless there were chryssalids involved).
